Summary: To many, Kagome was an enigma. One minute, she could be so kind and gentle, but the next? Not so much… A darkened history stains her past- from fighting demons to getting drug into the Port Mafia by her older brother all before she was 15. Even now, years after leaving, it was impossible to fully erase it all. It's only a matter of time before the illusion fades.

Pairing: Kagome/Chuuya

Chapter One

She was still in a prickly mood when they arrived at the Agency. The others were keen to tune into her ire and annoyance with the older man tagging along with her with an amused smile on his handsome face. She made it to her usual spot and sat down with her arms crossed. Dazai chuckled and took the spot beside her just like he usually did.

"Don't be in such a bad mood, Kago-chan~" Dazai hummed. His words were swiftly ignored by the raven-haired woman as she let the contents of her desk occupy her full attention. He arched a brow and leaned towards her to peer over her shoulder and observe what she did. It wasn't anything out of what he'd usually do, and she had no reaction just like always.

He found it easy- always being in her personal space. It often didn't matter- whether he stood too close to her, rested against her, or kept a grip on her somehow…- He was often always close to her side. Even when he annoyed her, she never shooed him away. She couldn't.

Kagome wasn't sure what the rest of the Agency believed them to be considering the usual routine and behavior for them. Their relationship was kept secret to the vast majority with Fukuzawa being the only one to know. He had reason to know, but the rest…? Not so much.

After a minute, Kagome sighed and glanced at the brown-eyed man peering at her. "You're so annoying sometimes," she stated in a flat tone. He cracked a smile at her statement.

"Sometimes isn't all the time, at least," he responded with a grin. Kagome rolled her eyes and turned away from him.

"Keep it up and you'll get there," she retorted in a dry grumble. He didn't take her half-hearted threat seriously, instead laughing her words off.

"I happen to like my chances," he stated in response. "After all, all these years and it hasn't happened yet."

Kagome stifled a laugh and rolled her eyes.

She left at three that day to go pick Hikari up from her daycare. Much earlier in the day, her brother had left with Kunikide to handle a case they'd been given, and when they'd get back was uncertain to her. Just as he always did, Fukuzawa had given her permission to bring her daughter back to the Agency with her after the daycare closed for the day. As much as Hikari's presence was appreciated within the Agency walls, Kagome always rationalized that it was important for her to interact with other children. The daycare wasn't far from the Agency, either, so it was far from an inconvenience.

"Mama!" A small pair of hands grabbed onto her leg the moment she was within reach, and Kagome was quick to look down at the small girl now clinging firmly to her. She'd waved goodbye to her friends that day already. When she reached her hands up to her, Kagome didn't hesitate to scoop her up into her arms and cradle her tight to her. She rubbed their cheeks together, and the toddler giggled.

Kagome waved goodbye to the daycare attendant before she turned to leave. She let silence befall her while Hikari chatted animatedly about the way her day had gone in the absence of her mother. As she walked, Kagome glanced at the girl she toted easily in her arms.

While her appearance was so similar to her own, the striking orange of her hair never failed to remind her of the girl's father.

The father she'd never met, a man she hadn't seen since she was sixteen.

When she left the Port Mafia, she had been unaware of her pregnancy. By the time she discovered it, it was too late to go back. It hurt to think about it, but maybe it was all for the better that it'd played out the way it had. She didn't regret leaving.

A place such as that was no place for a child, after all.

The stone steps she sat on felt uncomfortable under her rear end, but she couldn't force herself back onto her feet. In the distance, just a bit further down, she could still hear the sound of a prisoner kept there being tortured.

The screams he emitted while chained to that spot didn't bother her like they used to. She could recall very vividly the first time she had heard such noises. She had to bite into her lip to keep her tears down, only letting them free once she was in the sole company of her brother. He patted her head with a gentleness he seemed to have reserved only for her in this place

But now, she merely sat there, waiting for the time when she was given permission to head off. She was there for only one reason- if, for some cruel reason, they wanted her to heal him up so they could restart the session all over again in search of what they wanted. She could see the silhouettes of the figures still down there, and she could see the outline of the man writhing in pain against his chains.

It was no surprise, but it was uncomfortably cold down there. A comfortable temperature down there wasn't something anyone there worried about- seeing as, in the end, it wasn't them who had to stay down there for days on end. She was shivering. She kept telling herself that it was due to the chill in the air, and that she wasn't trembling due to her unease of even being there. Her blouse and skirt were thin material for her own comfort. Her jacket had been left in her room that day due to the sunny afternoon.

She drew her arms around her a bit tighter, sighing as she pulled her knees up to her chest, as well. It was silent around her for a moment or two before the faint sound of approaching footsteps stole her attention. Unable to fight it, she tensed up out of reflex to the sound. The figure grew closer, and she soon realized who it was by unique aura alone. At once, she calmed down.

"It's only you," she breathed softly. She couldn't let her guard down around many, but he was one of the only ones she felt safe showing her weaker disposition to anymore. Before she could say much else, she opened her eyes and nearly jumped at feeling something flutter around her shoulders. She took a look, spotting his jacket that was now draped over her thin shoulders. She blinked a few times in confusion before looking up at the man that was close to her in height. "Chuuya-kun?" Kagome craned her head to the side, almost as if she was asking him if he meant to drop his jacket on her.

With a soft huff, he sat down next to her, setting his arms on his knees as they managed to occupy the same step with ease.

Despite his lack of a vocal answer, she was able to understand the gesture well enough, and she couldn't stop the smile that lifted her lips.

She always found it so funny how he loathed her brother so much, yet he seemed to actually enjoy her presence. She was happy that he didn't harbor that same hate towards her, after all. With a soft sigh, she leaned against his shoulder as she sought out the warmth he had. Among the metallic odor that hovered in the stale air, she was able to pick out the cologne that stuck to him and his clothing. He always smelled nice, and she leaned more into him to focus on his scent as opposed to the awful aroma of the basement level.

"Thank you."

"Don't worry about it."

The memory burned as it resurfaced, unwanted. She frowned, coming to a halt at a flashing crosswalk. She felt Hikari's attention fixated on her, and, not long after, a gentle hand patted her cheek.

"Mama?" a quiet voice broke the silence, and Kagome looked at the orange-haired girl. "What's the matter?"

Kagome was quiet for a second or two before she shook her head. A small smile spread across her face, the young girl not yet able to spot how it was forced. "It's nothing," Kagome hummed softly. "I was just thinking about someone who probably doesn't like me all that much anymore."

At least, he shouldn't. Not when she'd left without so much as an explanation. All she'd left were his gifts and single-worded note. A sign she'd chosen to go with the one person he abhorred more than anything.

Auroua-chan: New update for this! There was a little glimpse of Kagome and Chuuya in this chapter, but more will come in the following chapters.

Kagome doesn't regret leaving the PM, but there are some things that hurt her about it.

I don't think it's been said yet, but Kagome doesn't have an ability like others, but she has vast training in her spiritual abilities. Some of them were useful while she was in the PM, but not in ways that made her happy.
A little insight- Dazai does love Kagome, but that never once stopped him from utilizing her abilities for his own gain. He never was the perfect brother back then, after all.

Anyway, that's it for now! Hopefully you all enjoyed! Thank you all for reading, and I hope I caught all the errors before posting.

Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
