Ianto was blindsided three days later when Owen slammed into his house yelling his name excitedly, then sat him down and explained in small, slow words like you would someone mentally deficient, that Jack was pregnant. ack had told him. Jack had started telling people. Without warning Ianto or giving him a chance to be there as well. Ianto was not sure how to feel about that, it felt a little like he had missed something.
By the time Jack got home with Emma Ianto was quietly seething over some of the comments he had received about 'Jack's baby' and Jack entering the house to declare him and 'his cargo' home did not help. Of course he was oblivious to the stilted movements and angry glare across the room as Jack gushed about some of the things people were saying about 'his baby' and how excited he was.
Finally the silence grew longer and he glanced over while releasing Emma from the front pack he had been transporting her about in on his chest, "What?"
"I did not know we were telling people" Ianto finally said.
"Well… I decided it was time. Anyway, I wanted to hear the heartbeat and needed Owen's stuff." Jack said in a throwaway comment that totally struck Ianto in the gut.
"You… the first scan? You did the first scan? Without me?" Ianto squeaked out, his eyes now wide with shock.
"You make It sound like I circumcised him or something, don't be like that. I just wanted a look at him. He's big. Lovely and big, bigger than I thought, I am further along than I thought" Jack was gushing again and missed Ianto reaching back for a chair to sit in as he now felt the need to sit down.
"A boy."
"Yeah, like I said the other day, what if it's a boy?" Jack laughed "No, wait. You said that. Did you? Anyway, he's a boy."
"And you told everyone"
"Yeah, it's so exciting isn't it Emma? You are gonna be a big sister to little Milo… or.. maybe he's a Dirk. Who knows, I have time to find a good name for my boy" Jack was talking to the little one who stood in her little sturdy footwear she hated staring back at him with that silent stare that could curdle milk "Awww… come on. I know. You are still the first baby, the bestest one and my favourite little girl, right?"
Finally Jack noticed Ianto's inaction in the chair "What's wrong?"
"You… you had the first scan, saw the baby and are now choosing the name. you told everyone, basked in the glory of it all and… and… I missed it all" Ianto said sadly, shaking himself back to life as he rose from the chair "Right. OK. Your baby. Ok. Well, pot roast for tea. I need to go check on it, ah… is her bum dry?"
Jack lifted Emma and carried her to her new bedroom, a little confused as to why Ianto ws acting like this. The room was a delight, he knew she loved it and he had some ideas for the next room for his son. Now he knew for sure. What a thing.
Ianto stood in the kitchen gripping the counter as his heart raced and he told himself not to make a thing of this. Jack didn't know. Jack had no idea that he had hurt him and would be sorry, would then get angry about it and they would fight, then Jack would be sad and sorrowful. What is the point? In the end they will simply accept that it happened, like they do with everything Jack does that hurts him.
Silly to make a big deal out of it.
"Smells great" Jack entered the kitchen and saw the white knuckles as Ianto stared out the window. "What's wrong?"
"Just sorry I missed it. I will be at the next one though, right?" Ianto said as he let go of the counter, "If you please let me know, I would like to be a part of it too."
"Oh god. Ianto… I … I didn't think" Jack gasped, instantly seeing the misstep.
"No. it's done and over with. No use crying over spilt milk and all that right? Just… try to remember me in this. I want to be part of that baby's life too. Please don't make this baby all yours and not mine. I know you don't mean it that way and I know how excited you are. I am too. I don't want to fight over something as silly as this, I know you didn't think about my reaction. Just… next time… try?"
"Ianto I am so sorry. I was just so excited and… I should have told you where I was going. I did, I said I was going to Owen's but I never thought. So used to being in charge, making decisions for myself and striding forth… sorry." Jack reached for him "I did get photos."
Both men sat and stared at weird blobs of stuff in little black and shite photos, trying to distinguish a nose or a hand? Or was that just big fishing tackle? Jack liked that one and giggled a fair bit, then watched Ianto choose one from the pile to place in the journal by his chair.
Jack had fucked up. He knew it. And Ianto's reaction hurt too, no shouting and throwing things then letting it go. No wild excitement as the knowledge it was a boy.
Show's he was more hurt than usual.
