Chapter Forty-Two: Tingling

The sound of battle scraped against the metal surfaces; the pleasant sound of deletion filling in the air even more than the surrounding mist. Rei stuck to the shadows just out of sight soaking the sight in. He keenly kept an eye on the ultimate Digimon having challenged Myotismon on top of the Recording Station, only Phantomon and DemiDevimon keeping him company.

There, Hikari and Tailmon were, trapped, Myotismon ready to eliminate them for good this time. Just as he was about to attack Patamon digivolved to Angemon, and, with a powerful Heaven's Knuckle attack dropped Myotismon to his knees and obliterated Phantomon on a glancing blow.

It was no surprise at all what with how powerful Angemon was being a holy digimon and Myotismon being a viral type. Surely the Digidestined would have the advantage… or so he thought.

With an evil grin, Myotismon, who had still held onto his attack unleashed a nearly point blank powerful Grizzly Wing at Hikari and Tailmon and they narrowly avoided death. At that last moment, before they would be consumed Wizardmon threw himself in the attack falling, just as Rei anticipated it would with his assurance of Wizardmon's dedication.

In a tearful cry Hikari unleashed a torrent of emotion, a brilliant burning light activating, her Digivice falling into her hand from the clutches of DemiDevimon, Myotismon freaking out as Tailmon Digivolved to Angewomon…

...And there they were. Rei grinned wickedly having every desire in the world to take out the now reunited angels. Their prophecy, the Digidestined of Hope and Light stood just beneath them, Rei still enamored by the mystery, but also wanting to murder them himself just to get back at the Digital Creator. At that level, Ultimate, and two pathetic children they were no threat to Rei.

Even as they condemned Myotismon of his 'crimes', Myotismon completely unrepentant and ready to battle, Rei knew they were sentencing him. In fact, it felt entirely like Deja Vu when they also tried to judge him but failed. He watched, a bit curiously as her Heaven's Charm attack strengthened the other non viral Digimon and paralyzed Myotismon. She gathered all of her power into the attack, then summoned a glaringly bright arrow to her bow, piercing Myotismon with it, Myotismon vanishing in a holy light, his bats fleeing at the last moment.

With the threat gone, Rei would have thought the fog would have vanished. The Digidestined seemed slightly confused to. "You're not really gone are you?" Rei said to himself, knowing by the showing of the bats he had barely escaped. Sure enough he would come back. He would come-

-At that moment t he felt a strange buzzing sound. He grabbed a phone from his pocket wondering how that even got there. It must have been from the man he devoured or Hisashi. He didn't remember it at all. He answered the phone, a panicky voice speaking to him.

"Confound it! The kids beat him didn't they?"

"Certainly so," Rei said calmly. "Try to remain calm."

"Remain calm? What part of this is going to help me be calm?! The kids were supposed to have been beaten! Then Homeostasis would have had yours truly go and finish the job. And then I would have turned her down flat! My revenge!"

"Don't worry," Rei said looking ahead at them. "Myotismon isn't just done yet."

"Really? I-oh," Gennai's voice said, Rei recognizing a strange shift in his voice.

"Is something wrong?"

"Tsch," he winced. "I got to go tell the kids of a powerful prophecy Homeostasis just told me about."

"Prophecy?" Rei said curiously. "I know all about those," he said.

"Not this one," he replied gruffly. "Frankly, you won't believe it even if I told you."

Rei felt his grin spread even more. "Now I am curious," he said gripping his phone tighter. "You'll tell me won't you?"

Gennai's voice groaned, then sighed out. "I can't tell you."

"And why not?" he said gripping the phone tighter.

"It's something you're just going to have to see. If I told you, it would not only spoil the surprise, but you would also start underestimating their power."

"I've taken on the previous generations of chosen children," Rei answered confidently. "And I defeated them. What makes THEM so different?"

"You know already," he replied. "It's the two of them. The One's the Angels Protect."

"Barely out of diapers," Rei scoffed. "And you're telling me they are the greatest threat?"

"You know it." he said. "You must know it."

Rei composed himself taking a breath and leaning his back against the wall. "Well, is it like a fireworks show or something?" he asked.

"Well, I guess you could say something like that," he chuckled. His voice dropped. "Blast it. She's blowing up my line telling me to get the prophecy to the kids. Hope you enjoy the view," he chuckled coughing and hanging up.

Rei put down the phone clenching it ever so tightly in his hand threatening to break it. "All right Digital Creator," he glared, "Just what tricks do you have up your sleeve this time?"

Rei watched them ever so closely at a safe distance. Their eyes were concerned, all of them keeping an eye on the strange mist that had not yet dissipated, especially the two youngest. For whatever reason, the two of them, the youngest, but foolish children had an innate sense the others did not.

He followed them as they went this way and that. Some went by themselves. Others went to the Hospital. But, at last, they all seemed to be heading to one spot- a place where a flurry of Myotismon's now chubby bats from devouring other Digimon nested. They manifested themselves six seconds passed six, an enormous beast revealing itself from their form with a massive torso, bat-like wings, and gigantic legs. He still appeared the same except with a greater intimidating gaze, his claws out ready to claw anything apart.

Rei stared on a bit wondrous. "Death Ex evolution huh?" he said to himself. "And a mega Digimon no less. I'm sure the children won't be able to handle you this time," he said just waiting for them. He hoped he wouldn't have to destroy them, but also hoped he could take his time torturing them. Waiting over the years for a strong enough Digidestined had grown tiring, but the thought of restoring his power kept him going. He could say that those kids were like vegetables in a garden just waiting to be ripe enough to eat…

"...But still," he said observing them all, and the ensuing battle between human and digimon, "This move was not on my part. My own creation decided to take things to the next level. Truthfully they should not be in any confrontation at the mega level until the dark masters," he sighed closing his eyes. "Am I really about to let all of my hard work go for nothing?" he questioned, watching them struggle against Venommyotismon.

A rainbow nightmare of lasers shot out from VenomMyotismon's eyes decimating the area and deleting buildings. Even Angemon took a beating swatted like a fly into a wall. Somewhere he had last track of Demidevimon and could not sense it's digital signature, except the last fading digital bits in the pit of VenomMyotismon's stomach.

Rei questioned what he could do without revealing himself, but he already gave Myotismon his word to give him a chance to defeat them. He tapped the inside of his pocket with his fingers truly wondering what to do. The battle seemed to be going downhill even further, Myotismon taking out Metal Greymon and WerGarurumon, the battle nearly lost.

"It doesn't look good," he said to himself starting to get a little anxious. "But, Gennai," he said staring at them, "Where are these 'fireworks' you spoke of? Clearly the children look worried. They look-"

-Strangely the two youngest looked even more concerned, Taichi and Yamato standing aways from them, the angels behind them readying their weapons.

"What is this?" he questioned, as immediately the spear of Angemon and the Arrow of Angewomon hit Yamato and Taichi respectfully, each of them gleaming in a brilliant light, the crests of Hope and Light shining powerfully. In an explosion of shimmering Digital Power the injured Agumon and Gabumon completed a transformation directly from the Rookie level to new amazing forms, a powerful warrior with armor and claws, and a metallic wolf with an icy stare to go with it.

He watched on in awe at the new Digimon, his eyes lowering to the two youngest Digidestined encouraging them as they took to battle against Venom Myotismon. "What...is this feeling?" he questioned marveling at them. "This...overwhelming sense of dread? This…" he said looking at his right hand, starting to shiver completely repelled because of those two.

He glanced down at it at a loss, his calm emotions lashing out as he snapped at his right arm and completely tore it off, Rei wincing as he did so.

He sighed out heavily, his data practically boiling watching the battle. Venommyotismon put up a good fight, and, it seemed he had the upper hand even after Wargreymon had pierced him through with his Metal Claw/Brave Tornado Attack. The Beast within Venommyotismon stirred itself, Rei snickering at the exposed core of Venommyotismon showing itself and blasting a dark blast at them all sending them all back.

In fact, so strong was the darkness from his mouth it darkened the skies around them.

"You look ridiculous," he grinned, "but you were just hiding your innermost power," he agreed with himself. "And even with those Mega Digimon they can't finish you off. Not even Homeostasis could defeat you even with those brats," he chuckled, noticing the Digidestined look frightened and scattered.

But then, just as he though that things would be over, a mysterious power came out of the Digivices like chains wrapping Venommyotismon up, completely immobilizing him.

"What?" Rei questioned incredulously. "How? The Digivices have never had such an ability before."

He looked on at the gleaming crests and then Wargreymon and MetalGarurumon delivering precise attacks using a large metallic ball from some building and a giant orb of power he called 'Gaia Force' with Metal Garurumon unleashing a powerful ballistic missile from his chest cavity. The attacks lodged themselves in Venom Myotismon's core, the chains holding him in place as he cried out in defeat, completely deleting.

The devastated battlefield left Rei speechless. Even Death Ex evolution could not completely destroy the children. Individually, he concluded, they were weak and could be picked apart. But, together they were quite an intimidating force for just a bunch of kids and their 'pets'.

"That should be the signal," Rei said, as if on cue looking up at a string of Digital Data in the sky. He watched annoyed as the children celebrated reuniting with each other and their parents. Despite everything, Rei had a feeling deep down they would not be defeated.

"However," he said crossing his arms, staring down coldly at them, "Had it not been for Takeru, the crest of Hope, this moment would never have been reached. Devimon would have destroyed them quite wonderfully. And, now, the same with this girl, Hikari," he noticed. "If Angewomon was not there he would have fed on their corpses just as he had desired."

The kids then came together, lifting up their Digivices to the sky, as all of them started floating to the heavens. It was no different than when Taichi had left when he saw him last time, but the implications were far more serious, especially since he did not leave his sister behind this time.

He winced as his arm grew back, Rei moving his arm and fingers this way and that, noticing that after he stopped the same sensation returned. "It seems my body doesn't understand who owns it," he said darkly. "But if you are more afraid of those two children instead of the one who owns you, then I will have to teach you to fear only me," he said again tearing it of, Rei groaning in pain as he did so...

...This process continued a few more times, the pain insufferable as little by little he was able to control himself, literally surrounded by broken digital appendages. "It doesn't matter how many arms I cast aside," he growled. "I will never fear Homeostasis, the children, or any crests..." he declared staring out into the brilliant light as the Digidestined disappeared into the Digital World while Rei clung onto the shadows.

"...I swear it!"

Rei emerged into his domain having every notion to destroy anything that moved but refrained from doing so. He sighed out heavily, holding onto his arm he recently had detached again from his body.

"Lord Kurenada!" a disheveled looking Cthulusmon shouted running over to him as he walked towards his quarters. "You're injured!" he exclaimed glancing at his severe wound. "What happened?"

"I was betrayed by my own fading emotions," he said disgusted concentrating his power and regrowing his arm.

"I knew you'd recover," Ygdrassill smiled. "Nothing can beat you Rei."

"Eventually," Rei agreed trudging over to his throne and collapsing into his chair, "you will be right. This is the last time I will ever let myself be overwhelmed by such illuminating brilliance," he said, his arm starting to shake on the arm chair. He clicked his tongue a bit disgusted

Just then, the phone he carried started ringing, Gennai's voice echoing a bit static from the end of it when Rei Kurenada picked it up.

"The kids showed up," he said. "Mimi nearly got skewered and Piximon saved them all with his sacrifice. They landed in Metal Seadramon's territory. It's going to be a tough climb up that mountain I tell ya."

"They move fast," Rei winced. "With all the ordeals they've gone through I'm sure they feel confident even after the Dark Masters toyed with them," he smiled a bit painfully. "What are your thoughts Gennai?"

"They certainly seem more capable than before," he agreed. "Though at least my home wasn't damaged when the Digital World was rearranged."

"My Lord," Cthulusmon said approaching him, holding out a special viral beverage on a silver platter in a champagne glass, "I do have some good news as well while you were away. It's why the Digital World looks like a spiraling mountain right now."

"What of it?" Rei asked.

"For some reason the Digimon Sovereign were incredibly weak, and though the Dark Masters could not destroy them, they were able to seal them out of the Digital World. They can no longer intervene and remain trapped in the heavenly realm."

"It was probably because they used up all their strength fighting you Ygdrassill," Rei chuckled. "Very good. This works well to our advantage. Though they can't help the Digidestined like last time, I wouldn't count Homeostasis completely out of assisting them," he considered. "Still, this set things up well for us."

"It does?" Ygdrassil said titling her head, and going over to the throne leaning against Rei's shoulder. "How can you say that..." she said glancing over at him, "...when you have no way of viewing the events this time?"

"My Lord!" Cthulusmon said surprised. "Is this true? You can't track them?"

"It's not that I can't," Rei said. "I'm sure I very well could if I put my mind to it. But, what with the way the Digital World has been arranged you can believe Homeostasis won't let anything slip out of her sight-especially that girl," he said glancing back at his arm making sure it did not tingle. "It would be like sending a lamb in a forest of camouflaged predators," he considered. "We don't want that blood trail 'scent' to trace back to us, do we?"

"Such wonderful insight," Cthulusmon praised. "But then how can we track the progress of the Digidestined now?"

"Quite simply," Rei said intertwining his fingers together and staring away from them, "We won't."

"So, we're all just enjoying our free time?" Ygdrassill said a bit peckish. "Their are some nightmare soldiers I've wanted to try," she salivated wiping her mouth.

"You can if you'd like to," Rei said to himself savoring his beverage, "But I have to get the 'mastermind' set up so Homeostasis will not suspect I am behind this," he said. "Perhaps she will suspect it's 'indirectly' my doing, but I am not solely responsible," he said getting up and snapping his fingers, a crystalline capsule rising with dark purple overtones and a monstrosity resting inside.

"Just who is that?" Ygdrassill asked. "Is it one of my kind? A variant by chance?"

"No," Rei said placing his hand over the crystalline capsule, "I told you before about him. He is like yourself, but contains the essence of each and every one of my generals," he said. "But, when he awakens his data will feed into him and tell him he is simply the product of the garbage bin of the Digital World. He will know nothing about the Dark Ocean or that I created him. He will be a final test for those children," he said.

"Is it his strength that makes him so powerful?" Cthulusmon asked.

"Of course, there is that, but this Digimon will be what is left of the Digital World once the Digital World has been left of nothing but empty space. The Digidestined, who are powered by their bond with each other, their Digimon, and their crests will shrivel up in the face of him. It is no coincidence he vaguely resembles my first formal general."

"You must really think the Dark Masters will be defeated, right?" Ygdrassill said playfully. "I mean, for Rei Kurenada to have faith in someone other than himself is simply out of the question," she snickered.

"Indeed, my Lord wisely trusts no one more than himself. Not even his most loyal vassals," he sighed. "One day Lord I do hope to earn your favor."

"You can have my favor," Rei admitted, "But my trust is altogether different. I only trust," he said holding both his hands out, "whatever these hands can manifest," he said, Apocalymon between the sight of his two hands. "And it's not like I won't know exactly what's going on. Don't forget the deleted data goes back to my domain," he said glaring at his hand to make sure it did not start tingling. "I believe very soon we'll see if this generation of Digidestined will triumph over the other previous failures."

"You must have a lot of faith in them," Ygdrassill said. "Just don't take out the little boy. My heart might be crushed if you did."

"That all depends on them," he said closing his eyes. "Can't you hear it, Ygdrassill? Can you feel it, Cthulusmon?" he asked breathing in a sweet scent. "It's the darkness brewing, the fear starting to slowly eat away at the Digidestined…...and the one who shall eat that fear shall swallow all of their hopes, dreams, and if they're not careful, their very lives..." he said, his wicked smile creeping across his face,

"...Waiting at the end, when all the world is stripped away, exposing their raw emotions, deepest desires...and untimely..." he said licking his lips,

"...Regrets."
