Chapter 118: Shrouded in Mist
"Like a dehydrated jellyfish stranded on distant shores, I take my dry and parched turn. Draw. I summon Hyosube and Kappa Avenger, and release! If monkeys can fall out of trees, then why is it bad when kappa are swept away by the river? No, I haven't been swept away. I am merely coasting! I Advance Summon Kappa Emperor River Slider!" (Level 7 WATER Aqua/Effect ATK 2500 DEF 1500)
Kawai Tell's Ace Monster!
"I set one monster. I set one card. I end my dry, crusty turn."
"Chupa's turn! Draw, chupa! Chupa summons Thunderlambda and Aquasheep, and releases them, chupa! Mememelody! Cattle Meetimeetion! Capturing the hearts of livestock! Shaving the wool around their souls! Magical Sheep Girl Meeeg-chan! Advance Summon, chupa!" (Level 7 LIGHT Beast/Normal ATK 2500 DEF 1600)
Where is it? Where is Ewekai Dolly?
"Chupa activates the Magic Card, Dark Factory of Mass Production, adding Thunderlambda and Aquasheep back to Chupa's hand, chupa. Chupa sends them to the Graveyard again. Magic Card, Melomelo-Meeeg*Wooltra Beam, chupa! River Slider is destroyed!"
"Teh!"
"Meeeg-chan attacks your face-down monster, chupa! MAGICAL PASTURE ROLL!"
"When my set monster is attacked, I activate my Trap Card, Kappa's Gas. Meeeg-chan's ATK shrivels by 2000." (ATK 2500 ↓ ATK 500)
Kappa Rapper (Level 3 Aqua/Normal ATK 800 DEF 1300)
"Meeeg-chan…" Chupataro boo-hooed. "Turn end, chupa." (Chupataro LP 4000 ↓ 3200)
"Like a pig roasted to a crisp in the sun, it's my dry and parched turn! Crusty, crusty draw! I summon Psycho Kappa, and release two monsters to Advance Summon! Hell Kappa River Sprinter!" (Level 7 WATER Aqua/Effect ATK 2100 DEF 2600)
"Hell Kappa River Sprinter, cabra?"
"I send Kappa's Gas from my hand to the Graveyard to activate River Sprinter's effect. Its effect destroys one card on your field, then if I have three or more Aqua-Type monsters in my Graveyard, I can draw one card."
"MEEEG-CHAN!"
"I summon Hell Kappa Diwet. Diwet's effect activates. Meeeg-chan is shuffled from your Graveyard into your Deck. The Diver's Artificial Fluid #64!"
"Meeeg-chan…"
"After that, I Special Summon Kappa Emperor River Slider from my Graveyard!" (Level 7 WATER Aqua/Effect ATK 2500 DEF 1500)
"Ch-chupa?"
"Now battle. River Sprinter attacks directly. Dry Dock Dash!"
"CHUPA!" (Chupataro LP 3200 ↓ 1100)
"River Slider! Great Emperor Saucer!"
"CHUPAAAH!" Chupataro was yanked under the riptide wake of River Slider's wave runner. (Chupataro LP 1100 ↓ 0)
Tell had seen better Duels.
"That Rush Duel was sloppy."
"Hn! Not like Chupa's won all Chupa's Rush Duels, chupa!"
"The purpose of these Duels isn't winning. Fusion Summoning Yuhi the Machine Dragon Knight with the Monster Card that Kuaidul gave you is. If you do not bring out Ewekai Dolly, there is no point."
And if Chupataro did good, what would Kawai Tell reward him? Would quenching the scientist's thirst for clarity earn him a golden kappa coupon for 8% off the next time he needed his clothes dry cleaned?
Actually, he could use the 8%. He backslided in the hygiene department since Yuhi went off into outer space, and his apartment was starting to smell again.
Didn't want Yuhi flying off the handle when he returned.
"Chupa didn't draw it, chupa."
You could draw five cards into a hand of zero, but bricking was still an occurrence in Rush Duels. Frankly, it was a miracle dead hands didn't come up more frequently. The improbable way Manabu drew all three pieces of his Maximum almost every Duel, you'd think he was stacking his Deck!
Was he? Somebody needed to call for a Deck check, and Nyandestar really needed to call Manabu out on his overall bullshit on a more regular basis.
"Are you heading back?"
"Even after that dud, you have enough data, don't you, chupa?" Chupataro cut through Kappa Heavenly Cleaning.
The blue-haired girl was working the night shift.
"Twenty-four hours of data compiled over the last little while."
"Then Chupa's calling it a day, cabra."
"You should put your hood on. The forecast calls for rain."
"Seems like perfect weather for you, chupa!" Chupataro snorted.
"Because I'm parched, you see." Tell didn't disagree.
…
"This isn't like you, chupa! You were always cool. You were rebellious…compassionate…So…So…It has to be a lie, chupa! There's no way you would join the Darkmen and invade Earth, chupa!"
Yuhi stared at his feet.
"You still love Chupa, don't you, cabra?"
Still?
When did Yuhi ever stop?
"Chupataro…I wonder how things ended up like this. I'm one of the Dark Meister's soldiers now."
"The Dark Meister? You mean the Darkmen's boss, chupa?"
"Everyone in the Dark Matter Empire has to obey the Dark Meister. I haven't even seen Yudias or the others in ages."
"Yuhi…It's not too late! Let's talk about this, chupa! Chupa will tell Shewbahha to get Yudias, and we'll face the Darkmen together, cabra!"
"I can't. I'm scared. I'm terrified of what'll happen if we don't…"
"Yuhi…Don't what? DON'T WHAT, CHUPA?"
"Chupataro…" Yuhi sniffled. "Yuamu changed after everythin' with Yuga."
"Chupa? What are you on about, chupa? Why Yuamu all of a sudden? And what do you mean after everything with Yuga, chupa?"
"He wasn't supposed to create Rush Duels in this era. He shouldn't have, but he did, and now we're stuck with the consequences of his decision. I always knew ya had it in ya. The way you'd be cryin' over Meeeg-chan, but when it came to me and Damamu, ya knuckled down and held your ground."
"Yuhi?"
"Is the one she wants to go forward and save…that guy?"
"What you're saying doesn't make any sense, chupa! Stop it, cabra!"
"That's some real love right there. Ha ha. I'm rootin' for ya, Chupataro."
"Chu?"
"Please. Chupataro. Step over my corpse and save everyone…"
His wish of final effort.
His desperate, do-or-die hope.
"Yuhi!"
"My crybaby hero."
"Don't do it, Yuhi!" Chupataro blew out his voice from shouting. "YUHIIII!"
Yuhi's Deck made contact with his Duel Disk. "Ohdo Yuhi!"
…
Clearing the sweat off his forehead with a pink handkerchief, Chupataro clattered on his foreclaws up onto the balcony railing.
The rain falling through the night soon became mist that twined the feet of those who walked forward.
What's this? It was just a bad dream, so why does Chupa have a feeling something bad is going to happen, chupa?
Why was he hesitating?
What was there to fear?
Chupataro looked out over Mutsuba Town from the second floor of the Black Goat.
The road was shrouded in mist.
