Excerpts from Diary of Lily Evans

Once Harry had sorted through the loose parchments, he found several diaries that belonged to Lily Evans while she was a student at Hogwarts. He dove into them enthusiastically at first but then with growing reluctance as he discovered what Hogwarts had been like in the 1970s.

Lily Evans was changed by events in her school in 1976. And Harry would never see some persons the same again after reading what was said and done.

1 September 1976 Diary of Lily Evans

My sixth year at Hogwarts begins today. I am writing this first entry on the Hogwarts Express only an hour after leaving Kings Cross Station. I promised Petunia and my parents to return home for the winter break, so I have to have all my homework and projects complete before it is time to board for the ride back to London.

I am sixteen years old now and will be grown in a few more years, so I have decided to change the label on my diaries to simply be Diary of Lily Evans. I have privacy charms embedded into the book and everyone who needs to know knows that I am a witch!

And I have boyfriend now – James Potter. He grew up after that incident with Snape last spring. We went out this summer and my parents liked him well enough. Petunia even gave him pictures of what his clothing needed to look like if we went 'Muggle' as he calls it.

And he loved every minute of it!

31 October 1976 Diary of Lily Evans

Minerva McGonagall as heartless witch. She is a Judas Goat! I hate her and curse the day she first took a breath. I hope that someday she regrets what she has done to me! And to other muggleborn witches!

This year, James Potter has been pleasant, kind, and very respectful of my ideas and opinions. We saw each other fourteen times during the summer break ,and he loved the cinema and fast food. We were casually dating, and I felt my heart beginning to melt for him. I haven't kissed him yet but plan to do that next step soon.

Then this afternoon, McGonagall summoned me to her office. I figured it was something about the prefect duties that she needed to discuss with me. But it wasn't – Minerva McGonagall had me sit across from her as she discussed my future in the magical world – specifically in Magical Britain.

McGonagall knew I plan to become a Mistress of Charms – Professor Flitwick has already discussed an apprenticeship with me but said nothing could be formalized until after I passed my NEWTS.

Now I know why Flitwick delayed making that commitment.

As of now! I am the personal property of James Fleamont Potter – and he can do what he pleases with me!

I knew that Magical Britain is back in the 18th century regarding marriage laws. I knew there were contracts involved with any marriage in Magical Britain but didn't plan to look at one for several years yet! I am only 16 years old! I don't want to be married or betrothed!

Something I didn't know was that I had a magical guardian – Judas Goat McGonagall – and she signed a betrothal agreement that legally and magically gives me heart and soul to James Potter! Why is this information not shared with muggleborn when we first…Come on Lily, that's a stupid question – would any witch come to Hogwarts – would any girl's parents let their daughter come to Hogwarts if they knew Judas Goat McGonagall could give their daughter away without a fare-thee-well!

I like James and he is nice. But now, I don't have any choice in the matter. At least he must wait until we have our NEWTS before he can force me to marry him. Judas Goat McGonagall explained how many muggleborn witches go to Pureblood wizards as wives to bear magically strong children. She said it was for the best for Magic that we give the men strong children.

She didn't have any sympathy for my wishes or plans. According to Judas Goat, the magic in the betrothal will make us like each other!

14 November 1976 Diary of Lily Evans

This afternoon as the group of Gryffindor students returned from Potions Class, Sirius Black asked James if he had sampled the goods yet. Marlene screeched and slugged the idiot. James was angry and berated his stupid friend.

But Sirius persisted and suggested James arrange a threesome where he would help James deflower me before Yule. Alice and Marlene managed to drag me away from the group before I attacked Sirius. Remus looked shocked and Peter Pettigrew looked like Christmas came early with the fantasies in his head.

James and Sirius still argued at supper, and I ignored everyone – Marlene has some say if she wants to marry Sirius Black, and I hope she thinks twice before asking her father to arrange a betrothal with that idiot. Alice is betrothed to Frank and confided in me that the betrothal with Frank protects her from other men. And she says that mine must do the same or it isn't valid and legal.

16 November 1976 Diary of Lily Evans

In DADA class I put Sirius Black on his ass on the floor and left him in a world of pain. Professor Middleworth asked for volunteers for friendly duels – only non-lethal spells from fifth year. Sirius Black volunteered immediately thinking his Black family knowledge of additional spells would give him the edge over everyone.

When I stood up, James looked as though he wanted to forbid it but then he thought twice and nodded permission – WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE PERMISSION FROM A MAN TO DUEL? I hate Magical Britain!

So, I was angry when Sirius Black bowed and smirked at me from the other side of the duelling platform. But I remembered Petunia telling me to see if the Evans temper could up the power of my spells and shields.

Black couldn't land a single spell on me! I dodged, deflected, and threw back the first four spells. (Later Alice told me that everyone was shocked and speechless to see me thwarting the attacks by Sirius Black. My secret is the stone that holds that permanent personal shield – it protects me from spells and curses as well as Legilimens attacks and potions.)

Black grew tired and that's when I attacked – his wand flew in one direction and his boots in another. I hoisted him into the air to reveal he wasn't wearing any pants today – disgusting! And then I set him spinning around while I threw charms that turned his four limbs backwards. Middleworth called the duel as my win at that point. There was silence in the DADA classroom for a moment – no one, not even James had ever beaten Sirius in a friendly duel.

The wizards all made excuses for Black's defeat, and the witches all looked anywhere but at Sirius Black. I stood there breathing heavily and noticed Narcissa Black watching me. She was a first cousin of Sirius, but they never speak. In his usual way of disregarding everything considered proper in the society of the purebloods, Sirius revealed that Narcissa was betrothed to Lucius Malfoy by her grandfather and Malfoy's father. Anyway, Miss Black gave me the smallest possible smile and dipped her head in my direction. I bowed my head in her direction – I am muddy, and she is pure so I must be more gracious at every exchange.

My spell finally wore off and Black's limbs returned to normal, Sirius swore to prank me for not immediately removing the charm. And James threatened to fight his friend if he dared to prank me. Black is distraught that his best friend would throw him over for a bird – a muddy bird at that!

In the Great Hall, Judas Goat McGonagall took ten points and assigned me detention, but I told her where she could stuff the detention and to make it fifty points.

For the first time, James used his power over me to make me apologise to the goat and attend the detention. Any affection I held for Potter is dying quickly and he recognizes it. Maybe he feels it. I hope so.

19 November 1976 Diary of Lily Evans

At lunch in the Great Hall – where else – my rock shield detected a potion in my drink. I stopped drinking pumpkin juice and only drink water that I conjure myself. Anyway, the potion was something particularly weird and I used a switching spell to give the drink to Judas Goat at the head table. She has a water glass at lunch, so she didn't hesitate to take a swallow – a large swallow. Very quickly, the prank affected her – Judas Goat stood up as her upper robes ripped open to reveal huge breasts. Then the old goat climbed up on the table to dance and shake her tits at James and Sirius, telling them to come play with them and make her a real witch.

By this time, Liar Flitwick and Professor Sprout had Judas Goat off the table and conjured a robe large enough to cover her humongous breasts. Everyone watched Madam Pomphrey cast diagnosis charms. That's when I noticed Black attempting to slide off the benches and head for the door. I said nothing but Professor Sprout had seen him, and she stopped him! She cast a petrify spell that threw Sirius against the wall and stuck him there.

That afternoon, Sirius and Pettigrew cornered me in the Common Room and promised me that the next prank would be much worse than 'shaking my tits' at him and James.

Sirius informed me that 'he' was the best friend of James Potter, and no muddy bird was going to take his place! Later James sighed and told me that he wasn't certain what to do – the Black family magic was extensive and there were pranks that could cause me permanent harm. When I asked James what he was going to do about this, he said that he'd talk to Black and calm him down.

I told James he should do that and quickly. If the muddy bird got angry enough, Sirius Black and his idiot friends could disappear somewhere in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

There were more angry words exchanged and James slapped my face. The shock of the slap hurt worse than anything. I wanted to walk to the Great Hall for supper alone, but James refused to allow this. Alice and Marleen escorted me with James and Remus behind us. I sneered at the boys and asked if they were afraid of meeting Black head on? Alice and Marleen lectured me through the entire meal how a witch must obey her betrothed.

In a clear voice I asked Marleen if she would obey Sirius after they signed their betrothal agreement. She replied affirmatively and I told her that she should document her experiences in bed with Sirius and Remus. And she looked especially sick when I asked her how she'd like to get mounted by Peter Pettigrew after Sirius and Remus finished.

Nervously Marlene said, "He would never allow that!"

I looked her straight in the eye and replied, "You heard him ask James to share me. Do you think Sirius Black will hesitate to share you with his friends just because you are pureblood princess?"

8 December 1976 Diary of Lily Evans

Black had a week of detention with Professor Sprout mixing dragon dung with old potting soil to give it new life. The smell lingered on Black's hands and in his hair for days after. Judas Goat returned to the Great Hall after a couple days and she was quick to take points from any wizard who looked too closely at her robes. I asked James to speak to Headmaster Dumbledore about chiding Sirius to calm down and back off. But James replied the headmaster thought it was good for everyone to blow off steam.

Peter Pettigrew had no guile or intelligence – how he became friends with James and the others I will never understand. The sneaky fellow tried to chat me up in History class when everyone else was asleep. He hinted that in return for a kiss on the lips he would tell me what Sirius planned.

Peter's lips were glistening with a potion – no doubt some prank from Black, so I declined and referenced him to the penalty clauses in the betrothal agreement if he attempted to force himself on me.

After history class, Sirius was angry. James noticed and finally lost his temper with his best friend. I understand that fight in the history classroom was epic with none of the furniture surviving. As soon as class was over, I left with Alice and Marleen for the library.

Marleen confided to me, "You know Sirius won't let this go."

I nodded but said nothing. Alice pressed me to tell her what I planned, and they only fell silent when I replied, "My betrothed wishes me to act like a proper witch. I certainly won't discuss any pranks with other witches. There's no telling who you might tell. Black? McGonagall? Dumbledore? James?"

This killed any mood for conversation and Dragon Eyes Pence threatened to throw us out of the library. Later Alice and Marleen left me alone and went back to the common room – I don't know if it was by design or just happenstance. I noticed a book left on the table that Marleen needed to complete a history report. But when I checked it for charms, I found a tracking charm.

I left the book on the table.

On guard and expecting trouble, I used charms to silence my footsteps and breathing. Another charm hid any scents that I left behind me – Lupin can track anyone anywhere.

8 December 1976 / Undocumented Events

"Where is she?" growled Sirius Black. "The mudblood can't hide from me forever."

Peter chimed in, "She needs to be reminded of her place and to mind her place! Mudbloods are below purebred wizards! Always!" Pettigrew never thought through what he was saying.

"She got lucky in that duel, but I'll figure out what her secret is, tell James and make him forbid her from using it again! She'll learn that wizards are always better than witches," Sirius stated emphatically. "Men are always better than women."

Uncharacteristically brave, Peter volunteered to look for the missing witch. He hurried around a corner, transformed into his rat Animagus and ran to hide. The Death Eaters were coming for Sirius tonight.

CHANGE SCENE &&***

Lily Evans moved along the deserted Hogwarts hallways, silent and keeping to the shadows. Her emotions were torn between raging at Sirius Black or rushing back to the Common Room to hide from the idiots. Lily wished to be in the presence of James Potter.

'Does the betrothal magic make me feel like this or are they my true feelings?' she wondered.

Three staircases away from the Gryffindor port hole, Lily heard voices – angry voices so she crept forward slowly, ready to retreat if necessary. Peering around a corner and remaining in the shadows, Lily was shocked to see three wizards in the robes and white masks of Death Eaters.

'Is this an attack on the castle? Where's Dumbledore?' asked Lily. 'The headmaster always states that Hogwarts is the safest place in Magical Britain.'

Listening before acting, Lily turned her full attention to the confrontation before her. Sirius appeared calm and cool as he addressed the Death Eaters, "I thought you boys left Hogwarts for the weekend. What brings you back to the castle before Sunday night? Wouldn't you rather than galivanting with the other DE's killing children and burning down houses."

There was a muffled reply before one Death Eater removed his mask to allow his voice to be heard. Now, the Death Eater clearly stated, "Sirius Black, tonight is your last chance! The Dark Lord demands that you come before him and submit. Become a Death Eater or die!"

"Ah, Bushwald Rosier, is this the first task the Dark Wanker gave you? The assassination of Heir Black!"

"You will submit to the Dark Lord tonight, or you will die!" blustered the seventeen-year-old wizard.

"And your fellows must be Anthony Selwyn, and Henry Rookwood," Black said, dismissing the first comment.

'Three Death Eaters who are seventh year Slytherins. They left for the weekend like adults can do,' Lily realised. 'And their master sent them to kill Sirius if he doesn't submit.'

The witch wasn't certain what she would have done in Black's place, but she knew she couldn't just watch these purebloods kill one of their own.

Sirius Black was nervous and thought, 'These three are sneaky enough to slip in spells that I can't deflect for long. Wonder if I'll make a beautiful corpse? What am I saying, of course I shall make a beautiful corpse.'

Undeterred, Sirius taunted his stalkers, "Rookwood, Selwyn, Rosier, you are distant nephews of the lord in your families. You are expendable cannon fodder, and your Dark Wanker knows this. He sent you inside Hogwarts to attempt to assassinate me. If you never return, he'll never notice."

"You over blown fool!" Rosier shouted as he raised his wand in concert with Selwyn and Rookwood. Unprepared for another wizard – a witch – to interfere, Lily's spells hit Rookwood and Selwyn from the side. Her powerful spells pierced their bodies from side to side. The entrance wound was a small circle, but the exit wounds blew out large chunks of liver, lungs, and intestines. The hot blood and matter that hit Rosier's face distracted him enough to let Sirius bat the Death Eater's blunging spell into the wall before throwing his own piercing spell that entered the wizard's left eye and exited his skull taking a great deal of brain matter to splatter on the wall.

Sirius stared at the two Death Eaters who had exploded so suddenly.

"Who's there?" Black demanded. "You just saved my life."

Lily stepped forward, her wand ready to deal with Black if necessary, and said, "James seems fond of you, and I hated the notion dealing with him being sad for months because of your demise."

"You!" Black said with some reluctance. "Damn, Prongs is going to brag about you for the next ten years."

"I'd rather he didn't know that I saved your sorry hide."

"Too late, I owe you a life debt and James will figure that out when I must be nice to you for here on. No pranks, no taunts, and no innuendo."

Glancing at the three corpses, "What do we do about this raw meat?"

"Perhaps an elf would help us dispose of them," suggested Black.

"No. The elves must report everything to the headmaster and I'd rather he never finds out about this," Lily stated. She was surprised when Black grimaced but agreed with her.

"The headmaster is always talking about giving people second, third and ninety-nine chances to reform," Sirius said. "He'll lecture us on how we should have disarmed these misguided youth and talked them into changing their lives and following the light."

Lily snorted and Black grinned as he asked, "What do you suggest?"

"Do you know the Evanesco charm?"

"That takes a lot of power," Sirius replied. "I can only do it once and we got three bodies."

Dismissing Black's concern, the witch pointed at Rosier's body and said, "Make him disappear."

Sirius wound up his magic and cast the charm that disposed of Rosier's body as well as the blood and matter that had blown out of the back of his head.

"Not bad," commented Lily. Without any excessive waving of her wand, Lily cast the spell twice in a row and vanished Rookwood and Selwyn along with the matter and blood from their bodies that had flown across the hallway.

"Are all the professors asleep? Or absent from the castle like Dumbledore?" Lily asked while Sirius breathed heavily. "It's Saturday… only a few prefects out this time of night."

"Who are the Slytherin prefects?" asked Lily. "Will they give us trouble?"

Sirius thought for a moment and then replied, "Lois Dolohov and Elliot MacNair. They have uncles who are Death Eaters, but I don't think they're marked."

"Then we can…"

"Beware the Ravenclaw prefect, Harrison Dolohov," Sirius interrupted Lily. "I think he's marked already."

"Damn! Can't we go to school in peace?"

"Come along, Miss Evans," Sirius said. "I'll escort you back to the port hole."

Before they left the hallway, Sirius noticed that Lily cast several charms that removed any scent of skin, perfume, or blood. Then she stepped back around the corner and once again walked the length of the hall before she joined Sirius for the trip back to Gryffindor.

"What was all that?

"Confusing anyone looking for evidence," she stated. "I laid a false trail of my steps, removed all blood and sweat…when you get in the dorm room, call an elf to launder your clothes immediately and another to clean your boots – everything needs to be as good a new in the morning. Wear the same robes tomorrow," Lily explained. "By chance do you know the charm to clear away the last spells on your wand?"

"I do," Sirius confessed, and he taught the muddy witch the spell that only purebloods knew. "Now, fill the queue up with normal spells so no one will think you cleaned out the history."

"Thank you, Black," Lily replied. Then she asked, "What do we do when Dumbledore brings in Aurors to investigate the disappearance of three Slytherin students?"

"There won't be any investigation," Sirius said. "Rosier, Selwyn, and Rookwood left Friday evening like all seventeen-year-olds are allowed. Old Slughorn won't miss them until curfew Sunday night and he'll report them absent on Monday. And since they're death Eaters, the professors will draw conclusions about their deaths in an attack or from a temper tantrum of their Dark Lord will prevent any serious investigation."

This life debt altered Sirius Black's behaviour toward me and I can tolerate him now as he is a permanent fixture in the life of James Potter. If only the life debt that Severus Snape owed James Potter had altered that wizard's behaviour.
