Summary: As Sailor Sun, Kagome is unwilling to accept her role. From fighting demons to taking on this new mantle, it seemed that a normal life had been entirely etched out of her cards. Luminescent and bright, she shines just like the sun. Through her sorrow, she failed to realize just how much the solar system relied on the sun.

Pairing: Haruka/Kagome

Disclaimer: I do not own either series. Each belongs to their rightful owners.

Chapter One

"The moon needs the sun, but the sun doesn't need the moon."

There was something about that phrase that always rubbed her the wrong way. Kagome settled down on the steps of the shrine, blue eyes gazing up at the crescent moon in the sky.

It sounded too cruel, after all.

People were unable to admire the sun's lumination, if not for the way it showed off the surface of the moon. That meant the sun needed the moon just as much as the moon needed the sun, did it not?

Her gaze remained fixed on the sky as she mulled it over in her head.

The moon couldn't shine on its own, but neither could the sun. They were two sides of a coin. The earth would be incomplete without them both, so that comment never once made any sense to her.

Both held importance in their own right.

Didn't they?

"Higurashi-san, please don't move so much."

The reprimand, while strict was anything but mean. Kagome sighed and stopped fidgeting in her seat as the make-up brush was swiped across her cheekbones for a reapplication of whatever shade of blush they'd chosen. In the same vein, the woman behind her pulled another lock of hair up into the curling iron she held.

The searing metal hit the back of her neck, causing Kagome to jolt in the chair. The woman behind her let out a gasp, immediately pulling the curling iron away with a scrambled apology.

"Oh no! I'm so sorry," she exclaimed as she moved her hair out of the way. "Oh, dear, I've burned you…"

Kagome lifted a hand and pressed it against the forming burn, gently waving her concerns off with her other hand as she offered a patient smile. "It's okay," she said, her tone calm and gentle. "Mistakes happen, I'm not mad."

"We should at least get some cream so it doesn't hurt you," she murmured, but Kagome stopped her before she could walk off.

"It doesn't hurt," she said. "It just startled me, is all. You reacted quick enough to where it didn't even leave a mark- see?" Kagome pulled her hand away, revealing the unmarred skin. At once, all the tension seemed to leave the older woman's body.

"You sure you're okay?" she asked, hesitating to pick up the curling iron again. Kagome nodded and turned back to face forward.

"Of course I am," she responded in a soft hum.

With her insistence, the process resumed. Kagome sat silently in the chair as both her hair and make-up were done. She glanced down at her hand, the pink glow along her palm fading. No one needed to know that she'd taken care of the burn all on her own. She was just lucky that the woman overlooked the initial mark she saw in her haze of panic and relief.

She just wanted this entire thing to be done and over with already.

It was a responsibility unwanted. Then again, that seemed to be fate's entire motive when it came to her. From fighting for her life against demons to this, it was as if she never had a choice, because the choice had never once been her own.

She wanted to reject it. She wanted to snub fate's intervention with her life, but she knew she wasn't able to.

"You are none other than Sailor Sun, the one who will illuminate the world and be the Luminary."

Her grip grew tighter on the Shikon no Tama, the words she wanted to say getting caught in her throat. They were suffocating and detrimental, but she couldn't say them out loud.

She didn't want this responsibility. Not when she was already stuck with the weight and burden of the jewel.

"Evil will be drawn to you. It's not safe for you to remain here, Lady Kagome."

"This is my home. What do you mean, it's not safe?" For the first time during that whole conversation, she let herself find the words to speak. It felt odd enough, to speak to the cat sitting in front of her as if it were a human. Then again, it was capable of speaking back. "I just got home from fighting monsters five hundred years in the past not even two weeks ago! What do you mean, Artemis?!"

The white cat shrunk back at her enraged tone. This was the first time the Priestess had shifted emotions so suddenly. He knew her emotions were justified and not personal, yet, her blue eyes burned hot much like the sun's flares. Behind the anger, he didn't miss the lingering presence of tears. It wasn't just rage in her voice, but desperation as well.

He hated having to be the one to tell her, but there was no one else to do it.

"I'm sorry, Kagome," he stated, "but if you remain here, you'll only cause the rest of your family to be in danger. I know you don't want that."

Her expression cracked, tears falling down her cheeks as she fully wrapped her head around his words.

It wasn't fair.

She knew to think of it that way came across as something a brat would do, but she didn't care. All she wanted was the luxury of a normal life. Why did the burden always have to fall on her shoulders? When could fate find a new token figure for this?

Hadn't she given enough of herself over to fate? Didn't she deserve the option to be selfish for once in her life? It didn't seem like such a thing was in her cards.

She sat down on a bench in the park and breathed a low sigh. She closed her eyes and leaned back, propping her arms up on the back of the bench as she turned her face to the sky, feeling the warm caress of the sun on her skin.

She lost track of time as she sat there, but she was instantly aware when a presence got too close to her. She felt a shadow block out the sunlight, and she opened her eyes. Her eyes met a pair of darker blue, but their appearance wasn't what caught her attention.

No…- It was their aura.

There were no words exchanged initially as they both just merely looked at each other. It wasn't long before they broke it, however.

"I was wondering what a pretty girl like you was doing all on her own over here," they remarked with a smile on their face. "You seem bummed about something."

Kagome didn't let her expression falter as she sat up. Even with her back to them, she could still see them clearly. "Can't I just enjoy a free day?" she responded. "We don't know each other, what does it matter to you?" Her words and tone were harsher than intended, and she realized that the moment after she'd spoken. "Sorry," she sighed, shaking her head. "Just… thinking about things and it's dragging me down."

"Mhm, I understand," they responded, coming around to the front of the bench. Kagome could feel them watching her expression, but she didn't look their way. "What's your name?"

For a moment, Kagome hesitated. She could tell by their aura alone that they were one of them. Despite the connection, Kagome didn't want to embrace this. Still, maybe she was the only one aware of that. Maybe…-

"I'm Haruka if that helps any," they said.

"Kagome," she stated as she stood up. "It's getting late- I should go," she remarked in a soft tone. "It was nice meeting you, Haruka."

With luck, they wouldn't cross paths again.

It was nothing personal, but…

A life of fighting seemed so… miserable. She knew better than anyone the burden of it all.

She didn't want this responsibility, too.

The silver-haired figure knew she'd gotten back before the door ever opened. Gold eyes lingered on her as she walked into the office where he was. She'd smeared off the makeup from the photoshoot long ago, and she was back to looking like her usual self.

There were no words exchanged as she approached him. Nor were there any words said as she settled against his lap, her face pressing into his shoulder.

Her facade all but melted away from her behind closed doors.

There were so few people that Sesshomaru would allow this close, but she was the last one to remain. The miko had become akin to a sister to him, and he'd treat her as such.

Auroua-chan: Gonna end this here.

Kagome being Sailor Sun is very fitting, given her natural brightness and resistance to corruption and the dark. She's not happy about the responsibility, but that's to be expected. She can't catch a break- first the jewel, and now this? It's all just unfair. Not to mention she had to leave her family behind at the shrine to keep them safe.

Artemis was meant to be her guardian, but did Kagome reject him? Why is he no longer with her?

SessKag, but in a platonic, familial way. Pairing is final.

That's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
