-Why did you do that, Batman? - she asked when they both got to the top of a bridge to watch the crossing. People were moving slow, cold wind was pushing sharp snowflakes to their faces. More and more people were coming to the riverbank from the city.
-I want them to know that I am on their side and I am here to protect everyone in the city of Gotham. I was busy on the main land recently but I saw what was happening in the Zones. I was just a boy when they separated people of Gotham, locked immigrants in there and made them suffer. I can't change the law but I have been helping all people of Gotham equally.
-So, you were born in the city of Gotham? If so you have seen it all… When we were in the orphanage with Evan he blamed the rich for destroying the city especially the Wayne family. He really hated them and the others despite the fact that his own family was amongst the rich and the powerful.
-His parents had a tragic history you know. I think he sort of blames himself for not being able to help them and the city itself for being cruel to him.
-But it's the city, Batman! Yes, I know, I was in the orphanage and from the zone and my mother was immigrant and life is cruel but destroying the humanity itself it's beyond my understanding. Unless…
-Unless? - he asked and looked back where White Shadow was standing a second ago but there was nobody.
-Track the white suit. - commanded Batman to his computer but before he had a chance to look at the monitor on his arm he noticed unusual activity on the bridge.
Something was going on there, people started to run toward the Zone side, they screamed and there was something amongst them.
-Mutants. - whispered Batman and stormed down.
His bullets hit one mutant after another but there were a lot of them. He eliminated three of them who got on the bridge but there were more coming from the city.
Three police cars blocked the bridge entrance when the last people got on it and run towards the Zone.
-Gordon, take this gun. It has special bullets they don't kill them instead put them into deep sleep. I believe we can cure the mutation after all.
-We will need more guns like this! How many of them do you think coming from the city?
-Probably everyone whom we didn't have time to wake up.
-Oh… it's a lot.
-Don't worry I'll do my best to help. First of all secure the bridge. I see there are some men coming from the Zone.
It was true. Large group of men was walking towards the end of the bridge from the Zone side. They were telling people to keep walking and helped those who were in need but all of them had guns and they were ready to shoot.
Batman's phone rang and he answered, inside his mask he heard Alfred's voice.
-Good morning, Sir.
-Good morning, Alfred. - answered Batman shooting at a mutant man running towards the bridge.
-I hope you doing just great, Sir. I'm calling to tell you that your aircraft is coming back to you and we loaded it with sleeping bullets. Those can be used with all types of guns so I would recommend you to supply every policeman with those bullets.
-It's a great news, Alfred! Just in time. - Batman now was in the middle of a battlefield surrounded by friends as well as enemies.
-Also, Sir. I am almost positive we found a cure, we still testing it but it looks like it's going to work without side effects.
-We will need that cure soon enough. People are waking up and they are not in the right state of mind. - Batman stood back to back with Captain Gordon aiming for those who had to be put asleep again.
-And one more thing, Sir… We found Evan, we located him but also we located White Shadow… both of them right now in one place. Her suit is telling us that she is fighting with somebody probably trying to reach for Evan.
-I want coordinates of that place, Alfred and keep me posted about what is happening there. I can't leave now not until my aircraft gets here and we can slow down mutants.
-I will, Sir. And one more thing, master Bruce. Please, try to stay alive.
-I will, Alfred.
Mutated people were coming in small groups of five and seven every ten minutes. It was exhausting for people who were building a barricade. Gordon and Batman were the only ones who could fire shots without harming mutants. Batman had enough bullets to get them through the next twenty minutes until more ammo would arrive.
People from the Zones accepted every last citizen from the main land. They set up three big cams two of them in schools and one in a building next to the library which was old auditorium. It was hard to get any food or medical supplies but people of zones brought as much as they could from their homes and made it possible for people to have some rest after a terrible night and even more horrific morning.
People from the main land were exhausted but grateful for acceptance and helped in camps as much as they could.
Gangs members divided their forces while one team stayed and protected camps another went to the bridge to build barricades and fight mutants.
The fight was getting longer and longer even when Batman's aircraft came in and police was able to get slipping bullets and yet the mutants kept coming.
-What we going to do with the sleeping bodies? - asked Gordon.
-We have to find a large building and keep them there. The cure is almost done Gordon, my lab works on it. I'll get it to you as soon as I can.
-How long do they sleep?
-The sleep stage is about nine hours.
-So, we will have about seven to get the cure here. You think you can do it Batman?
-I am sure. - was the dark knight's answer. - You have to find a building to put bodies in when it's all over.
-I think I got an idea. - Gordon called his officer and got him instructions screaming loudly over the shooting sounds of guns and roaring of mutants. The officer left immediately as soon as got his order.
-I will find the building Batman and I hope it will be over soon enough. - Captain Gordon came back to his shootout spot.
