Chapter Twenty

Kara's POV

I've seen that look before. She's gone completely numb. I would too if I was the remaining member of my blood family. Entering the morgue, I took Lena's hand as we approached the two sheet covered tables. "You don't have to do this," I whispered. "I can make the identification."

Squeezing my hand, Lena tried to reassure me that she was fine. "I appreciate it but I need to see it for myself." All I did was nod.

"Are you ready?" Alex asked, holding the sheet.

"Yes." Lena tensed as Alex folded the sheet down to Lex's chest. "You crazy bastard," she mumbled. Using her x-ray vision, Lena examined the cooling corpse. "At least the universe is safe from your madness now." Alex and I jumped when Lena used her heat vision to fry his heart. We looked at her slightly confused. "To make absolutely sure he's dead. He's like a cockroach. Use overkill or he'll come back."

Pulling the sheet upwards, Alex debated her question. "Are you okay with the official story being that Lex is never found?"

"Yes, that's fine. He doesn't own anything so there's no need for a death certificate. His accounts are connected to Lillian's so those have been dealt with already."

"Okay," she nodded. "A story will come out soon." Eyes fell on me. "You have to play dumb for a bit. I know Cat will be all over this."

"Of course. She'll probably write something herself." I glanced at Lena. "I'll give you as much warning as I can with Miss Grant." All Lena did was nod. "Do you need us for anything else?"

"No. That's all. If you're heading back, tell Mom and Sam I'll be a bit."

"Okay." Taking Lena's hand, I squeezed. "Above the clouds? Or my place?"

"Clouds."

Hovering in the cooling night air, Lena leaned back into my embrace. Wrapping my arms around the brunette, I nuzzled her hair. Since it's overcast, we don't have to worry about being seen by anyone. "Do you want to talk or just hover in peace?"

Placing her hands over mine, Lena sighed. "Peace for now. When we go home there will be tension and questions. I just want a few minutes to process before walking into that."

"Whatever you need," I murmured into her hair.

We stayed in the sky for about half an hour before flying back to Lena's condo. All conversation stopped as we entered. "He's gone and I'll be okay."

Sam was the first to hug Lena. "I know how you felt about him but I'm still sorry."

"Thank you. I know my chosen family will always be here for me." My heart warmed hearing Lena's words. It's taken so long for her to let people in and actually believe that we'll stick around because we care about her. That we don't want anything in return. Sam stepped back and Mom stepped forward, cautiously. "Thank goodness I like my future Mother-in-Law." Lena grinned, arms open.

"What?" Sam and Ruby exclaimed.

Stepping back from Mom, she chuckled. "I asked for Eliza's blessing earlier today."

"Congratulations!" Sam hugged Lena for a whole different reason. Ruby was next.

"Before any of you ask," the CEO eyed the three women before her, "we don't have any plans yet." I snorted a laugh when Sam huffed.

"I want details ASAP," Sam narrowed her gaze.

"Mmhmm," Lena smirked. "I know who I'm pelting my bouquet at." Sam's eyes grew as the front door opened.

Looking around the living room, Alex asked, "What did I just walk in on?"

Walking into CatCo and hearing Miss Grant yell my, correct to only her, name filled my chest with warmth. Entering her office, I closed the door behind me. "Good morning, Miss Grant. Before you ask, I don't know anything dealing with Lex Luthor's whereabouts."

Smirking, the older woman grumbled. "Do you really not know or are you protecting your girlfriend?" Studying me for a moment, the CEO eventually gave in. "Fine. One of you knows something." Her eyes narrowed. "Remember, any story you have belongs to me. I understand why you did the blog but that was risky."

"I know. Snapper lectured me for weeks. If I get any scoops on Lex or Lena I will let you know." Your head would explode if you found out we're married on another planet and soon to be engaged on this one. At least the latter you can know about. "Currently, he's nowhere to be found. He's rich and knows how to hide. There's no telling if he'll ever be found."

"That's what I'm afraid of," Miss Grant sighed. "How is she doing?" My brow rose. "With everything going on and being under public scrutiny all the time, it's difficult."

"She's handling everything. It's almost like she's bulletproof." Heh. That's funny.

"I'm sure having you standing beside her helps."

"One can only hope," I smiled.

"Well, off with you." Miss Grant shooed me away as she turned her attention back to her computer screen.

Getting settled at my desk, Nia tapped her phone twice. Picking mine up, I read the message.

Hey, is everything okay? Brainy told me about what happened. I hope L is okay. I'm sure Cat is eager for any type of update. -N

L is okay. It's a lot to process. I wish I could give Miss Grant a story that would keep her satisfied for a while. -K

I might be able to help with that. Did Brainy tell you I agreed to train and work with everyone as a SH? -N

He didn't! That's great! When do you start training? How could you help? -K

Once I'm trained up and out there, I feel okay giving an interview to Cat. I want to give women, especially trans women, someone else to look up to. -N

That sounds fantastic! But only if you're 100 percent sure. Neither of us would want you to compromise yourself for us. -K

Oh, I know. It's for me. The community needs a SH who's one of them. Men have someone, women have someone, now it's time for the trans community to have one. -N

If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. I'm totally down to help you train or anything you need. -K

I'll keep you in mind and updated. For now, just take care of your Argo wife. I still can't believe you did that! Imagine Cat's expression if she ever found out Supergirl got married! -N

Supergirl getting married to an L? I can see the headlines now. Haha! -K

The night before Mom left, we had a family dinner and invited everyone—Brainy, Nia, Alex, Sam, Ruby, J'onn included. To say Lena's condo was packed would be an understatement. The bar and kitchen were full of food and drinks while we brought in extra chairs and a few tables so everyone could sit together. Different conversations filled the room as we ate. Some more lighthearted than others.

Picking up her glass, Lena tapped it with her knife to gain everyone's attention. "I wanted to thank everyone for coming tonight. As you may know, it's always been difficult for me to let people in," the brunette glared at me and Alex as we tried to hide a laugh. "It's only fitting that all of my chosen family is here tonight when I ask a very important question." Pulling out a small red velvet box, Lena turned her attention to me. "Kara Danvers," A squeal began low in my throat as I nearly began to vibrate. "Can I ask the question first?" She laughed with a smirk. All I did was nod. "Kara Danvers, will you-,"

"Yes!" I covered my mouth. "Sorry."

Shaking her head, Lena smiled. "It's okay." Taking the ring, she slid it onto my finger. "Here," Lena held the ring we picked for her. Taking it, my heart thundered as I slid the ring onto Lena's finger. Everyone cheered as I wrapped my arms around the woman's neck and kissed her.

"Congratulations," Mom beamed. "I'm happy for you both."

"It's about time," Alex held her glass towards us. "Even from the start, I should have seen this coming. No matter what happened, the two of you were always drawn to each other," she paused. "Even when we didn't trust you."

"At least you know better now," Lena quipped.

A few hours passed and everyone started to leave until it was just Lena and I left. Wrapping her arms around my waist, she kissed my cheek. "I thought it was only proper that I got to propose this time."

Snaking my arms around the brunette's neck, I agreed. "I'm glad everyone was here to share this memory. Thank you for that."

"You're welcome. I know how important family is to you." Choosing her words, Lena continued. "It's important to me too."

"Good. Because you're stuck with us," I smiled. "I love you. So much."

"I love you too." Reaching up, Lena tucked hair behind my ear. "Will you make tea while I clean up?"

"Sure." Before I could turn and take a step towards the kitchen, everything was cleaned up and cleared from the counters and bar.

"What?" Lena smirked with a brow raised. "What better way to use super speed for?"

Shaking my head, I entered the kitchen and started the tea. "Of course."

Once the tables and chairs were dealt with, Lena slid onto a barstool. "Has Cat given up on a Lex lead yet?" Pausing, I debated answering. "I'm okay to talk about it. I brought it up."

"For now, she is. Earlier this week, not so much. She grilled me. Miss Grant has a sixth sense about these types of things."

"I'm not surprised. It's what makes her, and you, great reporters."

"Nia offered to give her a Dreamer story to keep her busy for a while."

"That's nice of her." Lena smiled, looking down at her new ring. "I'm sure news of our engagement would satiate her for a while." Green eyes met mine. "And no, that's not the reason I proposed tonight."

Setting a steaming mug on the bar, I sipped my own. "I never thought you did." Seeing my phone light up, my brow creased. "Hey, Kal. Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, everything is fine. Lois and I were talking about the two of you and I wanted to check in. I've been trying to find Lex in my free time. I'm sure not knowing his whereabouts is driving Lena insane."

My stomach dropped. Meeting Lena's gaze, she nodded her approval. "He's been found and will no longer be a threat." There was a long pause.

"What does that mean exactly?"

"He attacked Lena in her office and was captured by the D.E.O. and when he tried to escape, he was shot."

"Oh. Are you sure…"

"I also used my heat vision on his heart," Lena added.

Kal coughed and Lois laughed. "Ah, well then. My condolences."

"Thank you," Lena chuckled.

"Well, there is some good news. Lena proposed."

"I thought you got married on Argo."

"We did. But we also wanted to do something here."

"Congratulations!" Both Kal and Lois exclaimed.

"I win," Lois hummed triumphantly.

"Fine. I'll do the chores, without powers, for a week."

"Women know these things."

"I hope you have fun with that," I chuckled. "We have an early morning, so I need to go."

"Alright. Night you two."

"Night," we answered.

Ending the call, I smiled. "I'm glad the two of you are good."

"I am too," Lena sipped her tea.

"Snuggles?" I batted my biggest puppy dog eyes.

All Lena did was smirk. "And an episode or two of our show?"

"Sounds perfect," I beamed.

Taking her tea, Lena went to make herself comfortable on the couch. After grabbing a few snacks, I joined her. "Comfortable?"

Snuggling into the brunette, I hummed. "Very."

The next morning, I walked into work with a new pep in my step. Seeing the prints under my arm, Nia knew exactly what I was about to do and laughed. Giving a quick thumbs up, she mouthed 'good luck.'

Entering Miss Grant's office, I set her coffee on the desk and slowly took the prints out from under my right arm. I made sure the older woman's eyes landed on my left hand. "I need to call you back." Miss Grant's eyes moved from my ring to my face as she set the phone down. "Kiera Danvers, is that what a I think it is?"

"Maybe?" I grinned.

Keeping her emotions barely hidden, Miss Grant placed her hands on the desk. "I actually want to hug you but I can't because of the windows. No one can know I have a functioning heart. Congratulations are definitely in order."

"You really did learn a lot on your trip," I chuckled. "Lena and I want you to break the story."

"I can do that." Needing to do something with her hands, Miss Grant looked absently through the prints. "I want all the details."

She can barely keep her excitement contained. She's always cared. She just hates admitting it. "And you'll get nothing less. Come over tonight. You can ask all the questions you'd like. I'll give you Lena's address."

"What time?"

"Eight? Lena should be done with work by then."

"Sounds good. Now," eyes fell back onto my hand. "Hide that ring when you're out. No one else can know until I drop the story tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" How would she drop it tomorrow?

"I plan to write the story tonight. The quicker I can get the news out there, the less chance someone else steals it."

"I'll make sure to have coffee ready then." Turning the conversation back to work, I continued. "Do you need anything else?"

"No, that's it." Before I could exit the office, Miss Grant spoke. "Congratulations, Kara. You deserve to be happy."

That night, I used Lena's coffee bar to make all of us espresso drinks before Miss Grant arrived. "She's almost here," Lena kissed my cheek.

Taking the woman's wrist, I bit my lip. "Are you sure you want to tell her everything? If it comes up."

"She can be trusted. I'm certain she's figured out who Supergirl actually is. She may play it off like she doesn't but she's smart."

"Okay," I nodded. Hearing a light knock, I went to greet my boss. "Come in. I just finished making your latte."

Stepping over the threshold, the businesswoman looked around in admiration. "Nice place."

"Thank you," Lena shook the woman's hand. "Shall we sit at the table for this? I know you want to take notes."

"Sure."

Carefully, I carried the three drinks to the table and took a seat next to Lena. "Where do you want to start?"

Eyeing us, Miss Grant pulled out her recorder. "Do you mind?" She motioned towards the device. "Obviously, I'll keep certain things off the record if you truly need me to. Kara learned her reporting morals from someone."

"That's fine." Taking a deep breath, Lena let it out slowly. "What would you like to know?"

Flipping open a small notepad, Miss Grant clicked her pen. "How your relationship blossomed, who asked who, are there any wedding plans, etcetera."

"You know some of my story from the articles Kara's done. Originally, I didn't want to be friends. I didn't want to let her in because I have been betrayed in the past. Over time," Lena glanced at me, "she chipped away at my armor." The brunette paused as Miss Grant jotted something down. "The first time I let Kara in, I was doing some work at a local cafe. She saw me working and said hi. When I found out she ordered a lot of food and her sister had to cancel, I asked her to join me."

"You were shocked at how much I could eat," I chuckled. "The look on your face was great."

"Never take the last potsticker. She will give you the biggest sad puppy dog eyes you've ever seen. Over time, I let Kara in more and more. We started having lunch at my office when she would come for an interview or drop by with a new copy of the magazine. Eventually, I would ask her to a gala or out to dinner."

Miss Grant's eyebrow rose. "And neither of you realized a fancy dinner out wasn't a date?"

"I thought she was just being nice," I shrugged.

"And I thought that's how friendships grew."

"Useless," Miss Grant scoffed. "Absolutely useless. How did you feel when Kara was dating that alien boy, Mon-El?"

"I wasn't too pleased with it," Lena took a long sip of her latte. "I may have invited Kara to a dinner or two out of spite."

"Of course you did," the older woman chuckled. "So a blossoming friendship and eventual CatCo buyout. Did you do that for the reasons you gave publicly or because it meant so much to Kara?"

"I bought it for Kara. She came to me and told me what Edge was up to. Stealing the company from him was a bonus." Another pause as Miss Grant took a few notes.

Turning her eyes on me, Miss Grant tapped her pen. "How did Supergirl take this news? It's easy to see that the Kryptonian has a crush on a certain Luthor."

"She's fine with it," my voice cracked.

Stopping the recording, Miss Grant sighed. "Kara, I know you're Supergirl. I've known you're Supergirl. I just let you think I gave up because I saw how much your job meant to you. Anything from here on will be off the record. Tell me the truth."

Glancing at Lena, she nodded. "You're right. I'm Supergirl."

"Thank you," she breathed. "Finally."

"The night before Lena was attacked, I went to tell her the truth about who I was and that I was in love with her."

"I didn't take it with grace…" Lena trailed off. "But as I laid on the ground, I knew I had to tell Kara that I loved her back. Even if it was the last thing I did."

"So, is that how you saved her?" Miss Grant twirled her pen between her fingers. "Some alien technology?"

"Yes." I continued before she could. "To keep certain people safe, I can't give you much more information. I took Lena to a different planet where they could heal her."

"After I was brought off sedation, I was told a spot was found on my brain." Miss Grant sat straighter. "It was cancer. Inoperable even for the aliens who healed me. By the time Earth technology could see the tumor, I would have been dead. Originally, my prognosis gave me nine months. If I was lucky."

"Jesus," Miss Grant covered her mouth. "Something changed, clearly." She gestured towards Lena. "You're still here."

"We used a resource that changed my DNA." Taking my hand, Lena continued. "We made me Kryptonian."

Miss Grant's pen dropped. "You…You're…" Lena nodded. "Well, that answers one of my questions. At least Kara won't outlive you as long." The older woman was quiet as she took in the new information. "Lena freaking Luthor is a Super," she chuckled. "How does Superman feel about this?"

"Oh, we're good," Lena waved a hand dismissively. "He congratulated us and everything."

Miss Grant is speechless. I've not seen this side of her in a long time. "I'm glad we can be honest with you."

"I am too. Glad to know I'm not as insane as people think," the older woman deadpanned. "Yes, everything said after the recorder was turned off is between the three of us." Miss Grant's eyes fell on Lena. "Eventually, people are going to notice you not aging."

"Image inhibitor," Lena answered. "We've already discussed this and when I have to step away from L-Corp."

"So, do you actually know where Lex is?"

"He's dead. He was shot and I made sure he stayed dead."

Miss Grant coughed. "How Luthor of you," she joked.

"The story will eventually be that he disappeared into the sunset."

"Of course," Miss Grant nodded. A heavy sigh escaped my boss as she leaned back in her chair. "The story of the millennia and I can't speak a word of it. Karma's a bitch," she huffed.

"You're obviously going to get exclusive access to the Luthor-Danvers wedding," Lena offered. "That will be one hell of a story."

"The Last Luthor Marries CatCo Reporter," she thought aloud. "I can do better than that." Lena and I chuckled. "I'm happy for the two of you."

"Thank you," we answered.
