The intelligence unit are all at a frozen lake, trying to look for evidence which a suspect had planted.
"This place gives me the creeps. I mean who hides evidence out here in the middle of nowhere?" Jay sighed, looking around.
Hailey starts shivering. "Agreed. But desperate criminals do desperate things. We've got to find that missing piece of the puzzle."
"Hey, guys! Check out my ice-skating skills!" Adam attempts to spin, but loses balance.
Hailey laughs. "Ruzek, you're going to—"
CRASH!
Ruzek accidentally collides with Hailey, sending her sprawling into the ice.
Jay rushes over. " Upton! Are you okay?"
Hailey groans silently. "Yeah, just bruised my ribs. But seriously, Ruzek, watch where you're going!"
"Sorry, Hails. I guess my skating skills need some work."
Voight's gravelly voice comes over the radio. " Enough Chit-Chat. Focus on the case. We're running out of time."
With Hailey back on her feet. Ruzek tries to regain his dignity, they continue their investigation on the frozen lake.
As Hailey walks, she loses her balance.
Catches her. "Woah, Hails! Easy there!"
Dizzy. "Jay, I-I think I'm going to—"
Hailey's eyes flutter, snd she collapses into Jay's arms.
Panicking. "Hailey! Hang on!" Jay exclaims.
Adam pulls at his hair, guilty for what he done by accident.
"What have I done?"
Over the radio. "Ruzek. Upton, Halstead. Focus! We got a case to solve!"
With Hailey unconscious in Jay's arms, Adam's urgency grows. Jay cradles Hailey gently in his arms.
Voice Tense. "Ruzek! Call an ambo now!" Jay orders.
Adam fumbles with his radio and brings it to his mouth.
"5021 Ida. Roll me an ambo to Michigan Lake. I got an officer down, head injury."
At Chicago Med.
Walking out into the ER. "What we got Maggie?" Ethan asked.
Turning round to look at Dr Choi.
"We've got an incoming trauma. Female. Mid-30s. Possible Head injury.
"I'll prep Trauma 2." April nodded.
As the ER doors swung open. Brett and Violet wheel Hailey in, her face pale and bruised. Jay and Adam follow closely, his worry etched across his features.
The team spring into action, assessing Hailey's condition, and Jay watches, torn between being a cop and being the man who cares deeply about his partner.
"Alright! I want a head CT, check for internal bleeding, and start an IV, pushing 5g of Morphine. I want blood work, COAGS and cross-match for two units of O-Negative. Let's move!"
Jay's brother. Dr Will Halstead, approaches him.
"Jay, what happened out there?"
Voice tight. "Will, it was an accident. Ruzek collided with Hailey, and she hit the ice hard. She's unconscious."
Will nodded and placed a soft hand on his brother's shoulder.
"We'll take care of her, Jay. You did the right thing bringing her in."
Jay nods, torn between fear and hope. As Hailey is wheeled into the OR. He prays that she'll be okay.
Hours later, Jay paced the sterile hospital corridor, his footsteps echoing off the walls.
The minutes dragged on, stretching into hours. Hailey was in surgery, and every second felt like an eternity.
He'd seen enough trauma rooms to know that sometimes, even the best doctor's can't save everyone.
Come on, Upton. He thought. Fight. Don't you dare give up.
The rest of the intelligence unit hovered nearby, their expressions a mix of concern. Voight leaned against the wall, arms crossed, his eyes never leaving the operating room. Ruzek fidgeted with his radio, as if calling for backup could somehow speed up time. Burgess stood quietly, her hand on her gun belt, a comforting touch, a reminder of their shared purpose.
And then there was Dr. Halstead, Jay's brother. Will had been through this before, the waiting, the uncertainty. He'd seen life and death play out in these very halls. He stepped closer to Jay, his voice low.
"Jay, she's strong. Tougher than most. And Connor's one of the best surgeons. They'll take care of her."
Jay clenched his fists, frustration boiling over.
"It's been hours, Will. Hours. What if—?"
Will's gaze locked onto Jay's. "Hey. You can't go down that road. Hailey needs you to stay strong. She's not alone in there."
Jay glanced at the closed doors. Hailey's face flashed in his mind, the way she'd smiled during their las stakeout, the fire in her eyes when they chased down leads. She'd fought alongside him, her fate uncertain.
Gruffly. "Halstead. We've been through worse. She's a fighter."
Burgess stood up and walked over.
"Yeah, Jay. Remember when we took down that drug cartel? Hailey was right there with us."
Ruzek chimed in.
"And she's got that stubborn streak. She won't give up."
But Jay couldn't shake the fear. He'd lost partners before, seen the aftermath of violence. He'd buried those memories deep, but now they clawed their way back.
"I can't lose her, Will. Not like this."
Will placed his hands on Jay's shoulders. "You won't. We're family, Jay. We fight for each other.
And so they waited, brothers, teammates, friends, bound by loyalty and love. The hospital hummed around them, its heartbeat matching theirs.
Jay's impatience gnawed at him, but held onto hope. For Hailey. For the chance to tell her what he'd been too afraid to say.
Just then, the operating room doors swung open, and Dr Rhodes emerged.
Wiping his hands. "Halstead, she made it through. The surgery was successful."
Jay's legs wobbled, relief flooding him. He gripped the edge of a nearby chair, steadying himself.
"Can I see her?"
Connor looked at the unit. "Give her some time to wake up. She's in recovery. But she's strong, Jay. She'll pull through."
As Connor walked away. Jay's gaze remained fixed on the closed door. Hailey was alive, and that was all that mattered. He'd tell her everything, the fear, the longing, the love, when she was ready to listen.
The hospital corridor was hushed, the air thick with anticipation. Jay stood outside Hailey's room, his hand on the doorknob. The rest of the unit. Voight, Burgess, Atwater, gathered behind him. They were a team, bound by more than badges.
"Let's go in."
Jay pushed open the door, and they filed inside. Hailey lay in the hospital bed, her face still pale, but her breathing still steady. The monitor beeping softly, a rhythmic reminder of life.
"Upton." Voight whispered.
His gruff voice held a hint of relief. Hailey's eyelids fluttered, and she turned her head toward them. Jay's heart skipped a beat.
Hailey's voice was hoarse. "Hey, guys."
Her smile was weak, but it lit up the room.
Ruzek stepped forward, his usual cocky grin, replaced by genuine concern.
"You scared the hell out of us. Upton."
Kim stepped forward.
"Yeah, next time, stick to coffee breaks, okay?"
Jay sighed and looked at Hailey.
"You had us worried."
Her gaze met his, and for a moment, it was just the two of them, the ice, the fall, the confession he'd yet to make.
"We're here for you. Hails." Kevin smiled.
His words echoed the sentiment of the entire room.
They were more than colleagues; they were family.
"Thanks, guys. Means a lot."
Voight cleared his throat, ever the stoic leader.
"Rest up, Upton. We'll be here when you wake."
As they filed out. Jay lingered. Hailey's fingers tightened around his.
"Jay."
He leaned in, his lips brushing her forehead.
"I'm not going anywhere."
And in that quiet room, surrounded by the people who mattered most, Jay vowed to fight, for justice, for their city, and for the chance to tell Hailey how he really felt.
The soft glows of monitors cast shadows on the walls. Jay sat by her bedside, his fingers intertwined with hers. The room was quiet save for the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor.
"Hailey, I need to say something."
Her eyelids fluttered, and she turned her head towards him. Her eyes were tired, but they held a warmth that reached deep into his soul.
"Jay?"
He took a deep breath, gathering his courage.
"I've been dancing around this for too long. Maybe it's the adrenaline from today, or maybe it's the fear of losing you, but I can't keep it in any longer."
His thumb traced circles on her hand, and he met her gaze.
"Hailey Upton. I—".
The door creaked open, and Will stepped inside.
Jay's heart sank, but his brother's expression was knowing.
Will realised he stepped in on something. "I'll give you two some privacy."
As Will left. Jay turned back to Hailey.
"Hailey, I care about you. More than I should. And I don't want to waste any more time. I—."
Hailey interrupted. "Jay, I've been waiting for you to say that."
Jay's heart raced. She'd been waiting?
"I care about you too. Maybe more than I should."
Her lips curved into a tired smile.
"Guess we're both idiots."
Jay chuckled, relief flooding him.
"Yeah, we are."
He leaned in, brushing his lips against hers, It was gentle, tentative, but it held all the promise of something deeper.
"Stay with me, Hailey. When you're ready, we'll figure it out."
And as he sat there, their hands entwined, he knew that sometimes, life gave you second chances, even on icy lakes and in hospital rooms.
