The arena buzzed with anticipation as the genin who had passed the second stage of the Chūnin Exams gathered for the preliminary rounds. The tension was palpable, with each participant eager to prove their worth and advance to the final stage. The proctors stood at the center, ready to explain the necessity of these preliminary matches.

Hayate Gekkō, the primary proctor, stepped forward, his voice clear and authoritative. "Congratulations on making it this far. The preliminary rounds are necessary due to the large number of participants who have passed the second stage. These matches will determine who advances to the final stage of the Chūnin Exams. Remember, these fights are to the knockout or surrender. We will intervene if necessary to prevent any fatalities."

The genin exchanged tense glances, each of them mentally preparing for the battles ahead. The screen above the arena flickered to life, displaying the first set of matchups.

The first match was announced: Neji Hyūga vs. Hinata Hyūga. The cousins faced each other, their expressions a mix of determination and unease. The tension between them was thick, a reflection of their complicated family history.

"Begin!" Hayate commanded.

Neji wasted no time, activating his Byakugan and adopting the Gentle Fist stance. Hinata mirrored his actions, her resolve evident in her eyes. The two moved with incredible speed, their hands striking with precision and grace. Neji's attacks were relentless, his strikes aiming to shut down Hinata's chakra points.

"Give up, Hinata. You can't win," Neji taunted, his voice cold.

Hinata, despite the pain, stood her ground. "I won't give up, Neji-nii-san. I will prove myself."

The fight intensified, with Neji's strikes landing with brutal accuracy. Hinata's movements slowed as her chakra points were sealed one by one. Hana watched from the sidelines, her heart pounding with fear for her friend. The intensity of Neji's attacks frightened her, showing a side of him she had never seen before.

Hinata collapsed to the ground, struggling to breathe. Neji prepared to deliver the final blow, but the proctors intervened, stopping the match. "Neji wins," Hayate declared, as medical-nin rushed to Hinata's side.

Hana turned to her teammates, her voice shaky. "Neji was so intense. I've never seen him fight like that."

Tenten nodded, her expression grim.

Next up was Tenten vs. Temari. The weapons expert from Team Guy faced off against the wind-wielding kunoichi from the Sand Village. Tenten, with her array of weapons, launched a barrage of projectiles at Temari, each one aimed with deadly precision.

Temari smirked, unfurling her giant fan. "Is that all you've got?" she taunted, summoning a powerful gust of wind that deflected Tenten's attacks effortlessly.

Tenten didn't relent, summoning more weapons from her scrolls. She launched them with increasing speed and complexity, but Temari's wind techniques were too strong. With a powerful swing of her fan, Temari created a tornado that swept Tenten off her feet and slammed her into the arena wall.

"Tenten!" Hana shouted, watching her teammate struggle.

Tenten tried to stand but collapsed, too injured to continue. "Temari wins," Hayate announced, as medical-nin tended to Tenten's injuries.

The arena fell silent as Rock Lee faced off against Gaara. Lee, the taijutsu specialist, knew this would be the toughest fight of his life. Gaara, with his sand abilities, was a formidable opponent.

"Begin!" Hayate commanded.

Lee wasted no time, launching himself at Gaara with incredible speed. His kicks and punches were blurs, each one aimed at Gaara's defenses. But Gaara's sand shield blocked every attack, moving with a life of its own.

"You're fast," Gaara remarked, his voice calm and emotionless. "But you can't break my defense."

Lee gritted his teeth, removing his ankle weights and dropping them to the ground. The impact created craters, shocking the audience. With newfound speed, Lee attacked again, his movements almost too fast to follow. This time, he managed to breach Gaara's defenses, landing a few blows.

But Gaara's sand armor absorbed the impact, and he retaliated with a powerful sand attack that enveloped Lee. "Sand Coffin," Gaara whispered, as the sand tightened around Lee's body.

Lee struggled, his strength fading. Just as it seemed he would be crushed, Might Guy intervened, breaking the sand's hold. "That's enough! Gaara wins," Hayate declared, as medical-nin rushed to Lee's side.

The final match of the preliminary rounds was announced: Hana Takahashi vs. Daisuke of the Rock Village. Hana stepped forward, her heart pounding. She glanced at Neji, who gave her a nod of encouragement.

"Begin!" Hayate commanded.

Daisuke immediately charged at Hana, his fists glowing with earth chakra. Hana dodged his initial strikes, her movements fluid and precise. She had been practicing a new technique in secret, and now was the time to reveal it.

Daisuke lunged at her again, but Hana sidestepped and struck his arm with two fingers, sending a pulse of chakra into his nerves. Daisuke stumbled, his arm going numb.

"What did you do to me?" he demanded, trying to regain his balance.

Hana didn't respond, her focus unwavering. She continued to dodge and counter, each strike aimed at paralyzing Daisuke's limbs.

"Neji is that…" Tenten looked toward him and he nodded but his focus was on the match occurring below.

"Her movements are impressive. She's developed a technique that's similar to mine, but she isn't affecting the chakra. It looks as if she is just using her medical ninjutsu to paralyze her opponent."

Tenten nodded, her eyes wide with admiration. "I had no idea Hana was working on something like this. It's amazing."

Guy-sensei, beaming with pride, added, "Hana's dedication and hard work are paying off. This is exactly what I hoped to see from my students."

Daisuke, now with both arms paralyzed, tried to use his legs to attack, but Hana was too quick. She delivered a final strike to his back, sending a shockwave of chakra through his body that left him completely immobilized.

"I yield," Daisuke managed to say, his voice strained.

"Hana wins," Hayate announced, as the audience erupted in applause.

Hana took a deep breath, feeling a mix of relief and pride. She had proven herself, not just to her team but to everyone watching. As she left the arena, she glanced at Neji, who gave her a rare smile of approval.

As Hana returned to her team, Might Guy beamed with pride. "Excellent work, Hana! Your technique was remarkable. You've shown true growth as a shinobi."

Tenten, despite her own loss, smiled at Hana. "That was amazing, Hana! I didn't know you were working on a new technique."

Hana blushed at the praise. "Thank you, Tenten. I've been practicing it in secret. It's a bit choppier than Neji's Gentle Fist, but I thought it could be useful."

Neji stepped forward, his expression serious but approving. "Your technique is impressive, Hana. Targeting the nerves instead of chakra points is a unique approach. You've shown that you're more than capable of holding your own in a fight."

Hana felt a surge of pride at Neji's words. "Thank you, Neji. Your encouragement means a lot to me."

Guy-sensei placed a hand on Hana's shoulder. "Remember, Hana, we're a team. We support each other and grow together. You've done us proud today."

As they began to leave the arena, Neji stayed close to Hana. He seemed deep in thought, and after a moment, he spoke.

"How did you learn those techniques, Hana?" Neji asked, with genuine curiosity in his voice. "I've never seen anything like it."

Hana smiled slightly, feeling a bit embarrassed. "I have been watching you fight, Neji. I've been observing your Gentle Fist technique for a while and practiced on my own. It's nowhere near as smooth as yours, but I wanted to be useful with what I could do."

Neji's eyes softened, a hint of a smile playing at his lips. "You've done well, Hana. Your technique is impressive, and it shows your dedication. Keep refining it, and it will become even more formidable."

Hana's heart swelled with pride at Neji's praise. "Thank you, Neji. That means a lot coming from you."

Neji nodded before heading off to check on Lee.

"Impressive work out there, Hana," Shikamaru remarked, pushing off from a nearby pillar and walking toward her. "That technique of yours really threw Daisuke off balance."

Hana stopped walking and smiled, feeling a warm glow at his words. "Thanks, Shikamaru. It was something I've been working on for a while."

Shikamaru nodded, his expression thoughtful. "You've definitely improved a lot since we last trained together. You surprised me in that fight with skills I have never seen you use before."

Hana felt a rush of gratitude for her friend's support. "I couldn't have done it without the encouragement from you and the team. You know, watching you strategize has always been inspiring."

Shikamaru chuckled, scratching the back of his head. "Yeah, well, it's a drag sometimes, but I guess it's worth it."

They walked together towards the exit of the arena, the noise of the crowd still buzzing in the background. Shikamaru glanced at her, his eyes softening with concern. "You looked a bit nervous out there at the start. Everything okay?"

Hana nodded, her expression serious. "I was just thinking about Lee. It's hard to focus knowing he's in the hospital."

Shikamaru's face grew somber. "Yeah, it's tough. But you know, Lee's a fighter. If anyone can come back from this, it's him. And you've got Neji and Guy-sensei looking out for you, right?"

Hana smiled, appreciating his attempt to lift her spirits. "You're right. Neji's been helping me a lot with my training. He's really pushed me to improve."

Shikamaru raised an eyebrow, a sly smile forming on his lips. "Neji, huh? Seems like you two have been spending a lot of time together."

Hana blushed slightly, feeling a bit embarrassed. "It's just training. He wants to make sure I'm prepared for the final exams."

"Sure, sure," Shikamaru teased, his tone light. "Just training."

Hana playfully nudged him, rolling her eyes. "It's not like that, Shika. Neji's just very serious about all this."

Shikamaru chuckled. "I know, I'm just messing with you. But seriously, it's good to see you pushing yourself. You've got a lot of potential, Hana. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

They reached the exit, and Hana paused, looking at Shikamaru with gratitude. "Thanks, Shadow."

Shikamaru gave her a genuine smile. "Anytime, Sunshine."

Hana laughed softly.

Before the genin left, they were made aware that the next matches would occur in one month, to give them adequate time to prepare. Neji was paired up with Naruto, Shikamaru with Dosu, and Hana… with Gaara.
