Chapter 9
Hospitals are always busy, some situations more serious than others yet they still make you nervous even if you're not there for yourself. Walking past rooms stepping into the hospital room Brody looks around before stopping at Mina. Looking down at his hand where her necklace is still in his grasp like it was when he saved her. Scanning his eyes around the room he placed it on a table nearby, glancing at her before deciding to turn around and leave, unaware of the invisible fight of Mina and her dreams.
Everything was pitch black. She opens her mouth and tries to call out for help. There's no sound, she can't even feel or see her own hands. It's just all too numb. Too empty. Just simply standing there in a void with eyes she can't tell that are opened or not. She even considers that she's dead. Time passes for a while before a sound is heard, it echoes throughout the dark repeating itself, calling her further. She can feel a breeze blowing through her hair, the uncertain feeling relaxing as the sound of wind and water take over the noiseless void.
Away from Mina's dreams and in the physical world Nan and Ever are chattering as they enter the room. Dragging two chairs closer to the slumbering girl before sitting down, Nan brings out a bag settling it onto Minas resting bed. Pulling out a few small bottles of nail polish before picking her color. Ever following suit with her own chosen color before twisting the top off and reaching for Minas hand.
Back in Minas dream a hand clasps onto hers. The sudden touch feeling like flint to steel as her nerves sparked themselves back to life all too suddenly aware of an unfamiliar and warm hand. "Mina," they said. Their voice sounded muffled and unfamiliar. The wind blew stronger against her back sending a shiver down her spine. "Mina '', the voice spoke louder, softer. She could pinpoint it was a male, and the hand holding hers felt hot. Her heartbeat picked up nervously, her cheeks warming up in a state of flustered. Trying to force her eyes open to see who he was, but they stubbornly stayed shut. Almost like they were glued. "Come on Mina '', with another forced blink her eyes opened with blurry vision. His face was still unfamiliar but the curve of his cruel smile was not unnoticed. With a hard shove she felt herself falling backwards seeing the cliff and his face staring down at her. Screaming she thrashed around unaware of her surroundings in the real world away from her dream.
The two girls stopped as they watched Mina grip onto the sheets as her head moved wildly trying to escape whatever was holding or keeping her in the dream. Nan and Ever stood up quickly as they drop everything to calm Mina down, her screaming coming to a halt as her thrashing threw her to the ground, the blanket twisted with her legs making it unable for her to get up. Mina's chest heaved up and down while the cold floor cooled her sweat making it stick to her clothes causing it to be clammy and uncomfortable. The two girls rushed to her side making sure she was alright.
"Am I that ugly that I scared you? Wow…I'm so hurt right now" Nan pouted fakely putting on a sad face.
Ever chuckled before reaching out to help Mina, "I'm sorry I just…I thought it was someone else and…and" Mina spoke quickly feeling guilty for reacting that way trying to make it up to the other girl.
Nan burst into laughter stopping her from apologizing any more. "It's fine, though.." She dragged out the word glancing around playfully before locking eyes with Ever and both of them looking at Mina in return.
"You can make it up to me on one condition." She grinned at the confused girl.
"And what…would that be?" Mina spoke in a higher pitch slightly nervous about what the Cheshire grinned girl could want.
"You let me dress you up!" Nan smiled. Proudly holding up the jewelry she brought, a pair of earrings being put up to Minas earlobes before being replaced with another pair.
"Good luck with that I'll stay over here away from those grabby hands." Ever said as she plopped back into the chair putting her legs on top of the hospital bed crossing them at the ankle.
"Nuh uh, you're helping me too" Nan said before tossing nail polish remover and cotton balls towards her. "Plus her nails got ruined, we need to restart!"
Looking around she noticed Mina's necklace from earlier. Grabbing it she reached around Minas neck clasping it closed. "There! One done and plenty more to go!" a loud groan could be heard throughout the room as the girl continued.
"What's your name anyway?" Nan's blond ponytail tilted to the side giving her pretty face an adorable touch.
Her name? If her dream was correct then her name should be Mina. And that's what she told them.
"You think?"
"Yeah, I don't really remember." Mina chuckled, and consciously rubbed the back of her head.
"Well, I'm Nan and this," she points to the girl with a pixie cut, "is Ever. Be careful though she does bite."
Knock knock. A nurse with a sour attitude walked inside. "Both of you girls need to step out for a bit." When both of them didn't make a move to leave at all she added, "Now. Before I ask security to remove you."
Nan turned to Mina and told her to call for her when she was done and that she'd be outside the door as she was dragged out the door by Ever.
Five minutes passed when they heard a sudden scream following a loud boom! and crash!
Shocked, they didn't expect what greeted them. They burst through the door and saw a terrified Mina. A hysterical nurse with a needle in her hand. And around them was a shattered glass cup.
"IT EXPLODED!"
…
Following that incident in the hospital Mina hadn't seen Ever since then. Nan told her about how she ended up there. And about how a boy named Brody Carmichael had saved her. That she was the "highlight" of the day.
Explaining what a TV was and how it worked. Nan even gifted Mina her 2nd favorite pair of sandals and a red scarf. Saying she'd totally 'rock' them and laughed when she asked why she would throw rocks at them.
The door opened and interrupted Nan's raving about her Dead Prince Society cult-like obsession thing. A woman walked through first and an older man behind her, Ever close behind.
Nan immediately went into defending mode, "Who are you?" she squinted.
"We are Meenah's adopted parents. We already tell the nurses outside." She smiled, her cheeks covering her eyes. Her thick and horrible accent assaulted Mina's ears.
"Really? I'll go check then." Nan huffed.
"I brought them for her," Ever explains.
…
Upon entering the big building's doors Mina started getting nervous, her hands were clammy as her eyes darted between every student entering the school. She felt out of place, uncertain if this is where she should be.
Her adoptive parents Mei Wong and her husband let her enroll into Kennedy High with Ever and Nan.
An arm wrapped over her shoulder and Nan's face was smiling back at her softly. "Nervous? Be honored. Nan Taylor is escorting you to the main office for your schedule today." She said as her and Ever lead Mina to the office helping her obtain her schedule. Ever was chattering away about something called 'french fries' while they walked the halls. The bell rang signaling class was about to start.
Students rushed to get to class to avoid another tardy or another lecture for being late. Ever and Nan looked panicked, "My class is upstairs! I'll see you guys later!" Ever said before rushing off. Nan took the paper from Mina's hand and scanned over it quickly. "Lucky you! Your class is the hall across from mine, let's go!" Nan grabbed Minas arm speed walking to the back of the school where their classes were. Stopping in the middle, "Just go to that hall and look for the room number, you'll do great fresh meat!" She gave a pair of thumbs up to Mina before jogging to her class. Mina made her way to the opposite hall looking at every class number to find her own, looking down at the paper she looked at all her classes wondering whether or not she'd have any classes with them.
The last bell rang, a sign that she was late. Rushing through the halls with stalling students she found her class immediately being noticed by some of the boys and girls sitting in their seats. Some stopped their conversations looking at her, she tried looking for a seat but everyone seemed to have their own places.
The teacher noticed her stiff posture standing at the front, "Are you new here honey?" The teacher smiled as she looked through a seating chart.
"Uhh…yes I am" the girl spoke, averting her eyes away from everyone else.
"Name?"
"Mina…Mina Grime." Immediately she could hear the kids snickering.
With a pleased hum the teacher pointed to an empty desk in the middle, between two girls who stopped their chatting as Mina made her way between the desks and sat down stiffly. "Alright class today we'll be starting your essays so if everyone will please grab a sheet of paper-" everything else was tuned out as class went by.
Throughout the morning classes she was disappointed to not have any courses with her two friends. If they…considered her a friend. She only needed to suffer through one more class before lunch. Grumble.
Sighing she drooled a bit wondering what was for lunch wishing that she ate a bit more for breakfast. After asking a teacher where her class was she sat bored at her seat. "Who can tell me what the mitochondria is?" The man spoke looking around the classroom choosing who to pick, pointing to a random boy. "It's the powerhouse of the cell," he said confidently. "Excellent! Yes, it is indeed the powerhouse of the cell." The teacher repeated, scribbling it onto the whiteboard.
With a soft sigh Mina looked at her journal and started sketching random stuff hoping the topic could change to something more interesting not noticing the pause from the teacher before his focus switched to something else. "Let's talk about the Black Death."
She looked up from her journal, slightly interested and surprised how quick the topic changed. "Back then it was very easy to catch something because the living conditions were bad. Now, you could get the plague from a tiny flea. Only now, we have antibiotics for it…" He emphasized by putting his pointer finger and thumb together but not touching. The rest of the class passed by with Mina being interested in the topic. The lunchtime bell rang as students piled out of their classes to get some grub, Mina equally eager for some food as well.
She was close to the lunchroom when she was pulled away and dragged into an empty room. A head of platinum blonde catching her attention besides the angry blue eyes piercing into her soul. A scowl across her cherry lips.
"Grab her girls." The painted lips spoke, two girls gripped Mina's arm as they forced her to her knees. Another girl, dressed in similar fashion to her leader moved to the back of the classroom and started looking for something. Smiling devilishly when she found the perfect torture object.
Grabbing a frog that the class was supposed to cut open for Science, she put it up to Mina's face as she struggled to get out of the girl's grip. "Aw look at her Savannah…she looks like she's about to cry" the girl giggled as she moved the frog closer.
Savannah cringed at the deceased frog before getting back into action. Smirking, she glanced between the frog and Mina. "Hey Pri I think that's Prince Charming." she taunted.
"You know…I heard if you kissed Prince Charming you'll be the Princess of the frogs, sounds fun? Doesn't it?"
She shoved Pri closer with the frog's face barely touching Mina's nose as she struggled backwards. The grip of the girls was not faltering as she tried to get away.
"Come onnn…kiss him!"
With another shove the frog touched Mina's cheek as she moved her face away. "KISS IT!" Savannah yelled, angrily grabbing Pri's arm and shoving the frog closer to Mina's mouth who was desperately trying to escape.
It was a hopeless situation. Her lips were about to touch the dead frog's. And then…
A/N: See you on the 8th!
