The four boys slipped quietly through the large double doors into the giant room within.
They stepped in front of this huge veil in the middle of the room, rested on a small platform.
It was an unnerving veil, it flowed slightly as if along with the wind though there was none and voices seemed to call from the other end, drawing the boys closer.
They paused to catch their breath and one boy opened his mouth to whisper to the others.
"So, the legend is real then," he said in some fascination as he studied the huge veil towering over them in some awe.
One boy stepped forward grimly.
"Well then, I'd say it's about time to see if the whole legend is true. Who volunteers to go through first?"
He asked, his tone lightening considerably at the second question, letting the ghost of a smile cloud his face for a moment.
Three of the four boys glanced towards the smallest one, who cowered away looking terrified.
"Please no" he whispered. "I'll… I'll go through last; I'll bring up the rear. I'll make sure no one follows us."
He said shakily at first and then slowly firmer as he finalized the idea in his head.
"Oh, c'mon Peter! It'll be fun!" Another boy grinned at him. "You'll do great!"
"James, if you think this'll be so fun, why don't you go first?''
A taller boy in the back, who had been silent up until now, stepped forward as he spoke.
"Fine." Answered back James, and then with a gleam in his eye added "but Sirius is coming with me."
He grinned at the last boy, who returned the gesture, and James nodded, satisfied.
"Alright Remus? You and Peter will jump in right behind us."
And then, as a seeming afterthought, he added "But maybe wait a minute or two to make sure you don't hear our screams at the other end."
He grinned at Remus and the taller boy snorted in reply.
"Alright," he said "but I thin-'' Remus' next words were cut off as pounding feet were heard in the hallway they had slipped out of minutes before.
"Uh oh…" Sirius said looking nervously at the door. "Seems as our little distraction has worn off."
Suddenly the rushing feet were heard coming straight towards them.
"Abandon all plans!" James whispered loudly, as he grabbed onto Sirius and made a run towards the veil.
"Everyone! Jump! Now!"
The four boys jumped through the veil, and not a moment too soon, for at that exact second, ten men burst into the room, looking around wildly in desperation.
But no one was there. The room was eerily empty.
Too empty, one man realized with a start, and then pointed a shaky finger to where the veil was, a moment before.
"The veil," He gasped. "It's gone!"
