Oa was reduced to a desert of bones and a sea of blood.

The guardians of the universe killed, they who were mighty in life and worked to create a universe where dangers could be contained, were just lifeless bodies on the ground.

Their corps, which walked in the known and unknown universe, was destroyed. The paradoomsdays multitude came and then nothing was, only oblivion and carnage.

All the green lanterns killed, the mighty fearless warriors that kept the peace in the cosmo were rotting in their own blood. Some died quicker than others, others fought even when the god of evil's might was right here at breaking their bones and crushing their souls, even though all was lost they didn't lose their will to fight and died with it, battling an invincible force of destruction.

Their battery was destroyed, what was once a beacon of power for all it's soldiers, what was the insurance for all the species of the creation that they were protected by conquerors, monsters and demons, what was once glowing of the green light of will and resolve was nothing more than burned rock shards.

The human green lantern known as John Stewart died with it.

It wasn't a death by the sword, nor a death whose glory could have been sung in the echoes of eternity where all the warriors that died protecting their homes were remembered and their praises honored. It was a quick and gratuitous death, a fast flash of fire came from the sky and he and the battery were no more.

His last words:

"GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!"

Were suffocated by the emptiness that came the moment later.

When he was just a skeleton, that felt apart on his own.

The battery was destroyed, the testament of the universe being protected was turned into nothing.

Even if it wasn't destroyed, no ring of power could be given to any willful hero ready to sacrifice himself, the tool of Darkseid and it's paradoomsdays horror in the cosmo, made sure that nothing could have changed the fate, nothing could save anything, and any living creature wouldn't have enough will to raise up and stand against this horrific destiny. And so

The last ring hitting the floor in a depressing sound of nothingness

And the dark lord of Apokolips was gone in a portal of fire, he went away with no remorse or talk. He murdered the whole peacekeeping force of the galaxy with no less care than walking in a straight line.

And not far from there a white alien dressed in blue is looking at the abominable spectacle.

Looking at how no one left in the universe has enough hope to try to fight against Darkseid's forces.

How the hope for any new green lantern is gone with the battery destroyed.

No hope for any bright or bittersweet future where the heroes won even with a sacrifice.

No hope for anything.

And slowly but sadly his blue dress fades away, and his ring hits the ground, and in a silent scream of agony it says:

"Hopelessness"
