Chapter 16 – Brown Eyes

"Sister, have you heard me?"

"Hmm?"

"You've been daydreaming recently. More often than usual." Hanabi chided, as she crossed her hands in front of her, evoking the very picture of annoyance.

"Oh, is that so? Must be your imagination." Hinata countered, orienting herself once more.

Naruto had left days ago and it was still very much like stepping through haze for her, all too involved in her memories rather than what was actually happening.

Which involved the final stage of preparations for her cousin's wedding, numerous conversations with vendors, arranging her gift for the happy couple, and to top it all off…

Lord Junta Madoka, due to arrive this week for formal introductions. Her father had already forewarned that the suitor's presence was inevitable and for her to be as presentable as possible.

She would have resigned herself to accepting his visit without much fanfare, but Lord Madoka was a well-known, stubbornly cruel man who cared for little other than wealth and status.

Hinata could already picture the most unpleasant time she would have with this man while he was here. And she would have a much more unpleasant time dealing with his courtship if it came to that.

Hanabi raised her eyebrows. "My imagination is quite limited thanks to our father. Should I know something that's happened?"

Ah, her sister could be quite perceptive when she wanted.

Hinata sighed, already exhausted by her younger sister's continued pestering, "Hanabi, I'm simply thinking of my impeding suitor. For all we know it could be your future brother-in-law."

Hanabi laughed at her sister's blatant sarcasm. "Oh, silly me. Of course you're thinking of him. Certainly not of the handsome blonde gentleman you were dancing with the other night?"

Instantly Hinata's cheeks flushed and she shushed her sister before looking around the foyer, "Hanabi you must be silent about that."

"Everybody saw the two of you dance sister. It wasn't a secret."

"You will lead others to believe there's something more. And that would be a travesty to both of our reputations." Hinata said, her expression stern.

Hanabi rolled her eyes, but Hinata saw the faint embarrassment dawn over her as she hushed.

"Lady Hinata?"

Both sisters jumped at seeing Natsu enter the foyer.

"I have Lady Ino here to see you."

"Lady Ino?" Hinata parroted, standing up. "To see me?"

"Yes milady, she mentioned it was important."

"Please escort her in."

"Right away, milady."

"What does Lady Ino want with you, sister?"

"I haven't the faintest. In any case, you had best run along."

Hanabi rolled her eyes again but this time she went upstairs, leaving Hinata to herself in the foyer.

Ino walked in, the very picture of perfection and embraced Hinata warmly.

"Hinata, it's a joy to see you again. I quite enjoyed myself at your family's ball."

"Thank you, Lady Ino." Hinata responded promptly and Ino simply waived her off.

"Ino will do just fine. We've known each other for years after all."

"O-Of course." Hinata responded, her eyebrows scrunching in confusion.

There was no familiarity between them. Ino and Sakura had always been friends, if albeit on different teams, but she and Ino had hardly conversed. The first years at the academy had been a blur for Hinata, and she had blocked out much of the uncomfortable and painful memories she retained from her youth.

She wondered what had overcome the lady heir to visit her.

Ino sat down on a chair in front of her as Natsu brought them in tea and snacks to enjoy.

"We're quite alike you know. I never noticed it in our youth, but our status as of late has us share many things in common, wouldn't you agree?" Ino posed.

"I suppose so. We are poised to become the next heirs of our clans, at least…until we marry." Hinata answered slowly, sipping her tea as she mulled over Ino's thoughts.

Ino took a sip of tea and hummed in agreement. "Indeed. I'm not sure if you're aware, but our fathers regularly interact as part of the shinobi assignments."

"Yes, of course."

"They tend to converse quite frequently about non-shinobi matters as well." She continued coyly, sipping her tea delicately.

Non-shinobi matters? Hinata was silent as she stared at Ino in confusion.

Ino put the tea down on the table and mustered a bemused smile. "My father mentioned that you were starting to entertain potential suitors."

Ah, now it all made sense. It was not a surprise that the nobility of the town were gossiping about her. Lady Ino had been entertaining such gentlemen for quite some time now…

And rejecting them for just as long.

"You've come to offer advice then?" Hinata probed.

"Yes, but not in the way you think of."

The Yamanaka had fame of tending to speak in riddles, their peculiar mind abilities seemingly making them think others could read them easily. "Whatever do you mean-"

"I happen to know a few crafty ways to dissuade a particular suitor so that he will run out of the Hyuuga estate sans proposal." Ino laid out, a content wide smile crossing her face.

Hinata was shocked at the blasé nature of her words and cautiously looked around the room to ensure there was no one listening in. "While I'm grateful, I would like to know why the kindness?"

Ino munched on one of the snacks. "I recognize the face of a woman who is not interested in any gentleman suitor," she paused, "and as a woman in the same situation I felt it best for us to stick together."

Ino did not add that they appeared to share the same proclivity for enjoying the company of untitled and poor men, as was evident in the mannerisms Hinata had had with Naruto at the ball. Ino did not read their thoughts outright, but the emotions she could feel off of them were proof enough.

And if there was one thing Ino loved, was a rebel. And who better to share suitor advice than she?

Hinata's eyes twinkled then, surprised once more by the camaraderie the woman in front had just shown her.

If her family could see very much, then certainly the Yamanaka could sense everything, down the overwhelming gratefulness that Hinata certainly felt.

"I would very much like to hear those methods you speak of."

Naruto was glad the weather was agreeable today, the sun rays shining brightly amongst the chilly October morning.

They had arrived the previous evening amidst light rain, due to pick up another carpentry shipment from the Land of Waves, this time to be delivered to Shimogakure, the Hidden Frost Village.

That trip alone would take weeks and it would be cold and bitter, but the Land of Whirlpools would be close from there.

He was lost in his plans, thinking of the best route, that Tazuna walking up to him and sitting down momentarily snapped him out of his train of thought.

"How is the bridge coming along?"

"See for yourself," Tazuna answered, wiping his brow as he looked on at his workers. "About two thirds of the way done. I daresay by this time next year we may be close to finishing."

Naruto smiled. "Excellent. That's good to hear. I'm glad you were able to put the supplies I gave you all to use."

"More than enough…" Tazuna adjusted his hat looking out at his workers, "There were an awful lot of supplies this time around. Business was better than usual I gather?"

"Indeed, it was Old Man," Naruto replied keeping his face impassive "And it brings me great joy that you are almost done with the bridge. I trust no further complications have occurred have come up?"

"None recently," Tazuna replied gruffly, "We do get a couple of bandits from time to time who wash ashore, but we're able to handle them quickly enough."

Naruto hummed in understanding. "The weapons I provided are useful then."

"Quite. We would've been unable to fend them off without those tools, which reminds me," he trailed off eyeing Naruto's cheerful demeanor, "Who exactly do you buy those from?"

"Other merchants."

"And from where, pray tell, do these merchants hail from?"

Naruto's eyes narrowed. "What are you getting at, Old Man?"

Tazuna sighed. "I'm not underappreciating our work. Those of us who can build the goods you handle have excellent craftmanship, I know that, but just how are you able to turn things around so quickly for us?"

Naruto shrugged, turning sharply away from the elder man. "You underestimate my trades. If I were a lesser man I'd be offended right now. Your builds are valuable to those in other lands who have no such carpenters and blacksmiths."

There was a long pause between them as Tazuna rolled up the bridge plans, slowly, his eyes trained on the workers yelling between themselves on the bridge.

Years. It had taken years to get to this point. In the beginning Naruto had helped so much. His mere crew members were an immediate dissuasion to any bandits or rogue nin who dared to appear. Without his work, they'd never had been able to get started on this life-saving bridge.

But still, it was suspicious at best, and potentially criminal at worst.

"Listen lad, I've known you for years. I would hate for you to get mixed up in bad business and wreck your life, you know that? Especially for our sake."

Naruto chuckled and stood up, patting the man on the back.

"You needn't worry. I can take care of myself."

It was not an admission or denial of guilt and Tazuna did not miss that.

Naruto climbed up the bridge, encountering the boisterous workers who hollered and jested with him as he helped where he could, the sun bearing down on them strongly as they worked, Inari giving orders looking like every bit the leader he had grown up to be.

Naruto was willing to go to great lengths for his friends, his comrades…his family. Especially for their sake, for anyone's sake that needed a hand to make a living.

This was not a meager endeavor. Not to him.

October 17, 1677

Hinata,

I hope you've been well.

The land of waves bridge is coming along nicely. The Old Man says in a little over a year they expect to be done. With the incoming colder season, work will be halted until the weather permits.

It's lovely here now, the cold heavy in the mornings when we begin to work and evenings when we drink. But the sun shines brightly during the day, helping us get through.

They had a few more items for us to trade for them. It looks like I will be back to my usual merchant trips after Neji's wedding. Lots of places to visit afterwards. I intend to visit the Land of Whirlpools and search for more clues as time permits.

Your scarf keeps me warm. Tsunami asked if she could buy some of your family's silks for their land. I told her I would ask, but I warned her the silks are not only excellent, but quite expensive and your family is discriminant in who they sell to. However, I'm ready to handle the entire amount so let me know if this would be possible. A fair trade this time, I promise.

Naruto

Hinata snorted at the minor jab at her family in the letter, imagining how Naruto had probably chuckled to himself at writing it. Her family had fame as being snobs and with good reason considering how very selective they were when selling their fine silks.

She ran her fingers over the parchment and closed her eyes, picturing the scene.

Naruto wearing her scarf in the cold mornings. Eating heartily in Tsunami's home while enjoying the food provided while the sun rose outside.

Simple. Fresh. Admirable.

Hinata wished she could see it for herself.

"Milady?" Hirumi called out to her, causing her to jump and she immediately hid the letter and locked her drawer, her heartbeat still beating quickly.

"Yes Hirumi?"

"Lord Junta Madoka is here to meet your acquaintance."

"Very well. I'll be right down."

Hinata stood up and finished chewing the piece of food she still had in her hand and made great show to rub the crumbs over her fingers.

All good so far, she thought and she quickly walked downstairs.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Lord Madoka." She bowed her head, not missing the way Lord Madoka's small, beady eyes twinkled at her covered chest.

Ino had said he was a bit of a deviant as well.

"A pleasure to meet you as well Lady Hinata. Your father has been most welcoming."

Hinata nodded nonchalantly as her father eyed his daughter as she sat down, Hirumi standing near the entryway.

"Are you visiting Konoha on business?"

"Indeed, I've heard of this town's fine Hyuuga silks and come to see them for myself."

"Are there no such fine silks in your land, my lord?

Hiashi raised his eyebrow, but mercifully said nothing.

Inside Hinata was wondering just how impertinent she could get before this lord complained to her father about it. She wanted to push him just enough to prevent that.

He chuckled, his beady eyes staring right at her. "We do have quite beautiful fabrics, but all in the Land of Fire know that Hyuuga eyes produce the finest work."

Hinata hummed. "Would you like to see some of our silks?"

"If that's permissible?" Lord Madoka asked looking towards Hiashi.

"Of course. Do let me know once you've returned." Her father answered.

The lord wasted no time in offering his arm, which Hinata gleefully took, not missing the nose scrunch as he inhaled the overwhelming smell of garlic over her hands.

She made sure to talk as much as possible, noticing that gradually he let go of her arm until he was merely standing beside her, his face turned in the opposite direction as she went on and on about the process of how they crafted the fabrics, how they shipped orders, and how many workers there were.

Hirumi had not been blind to Lady Hinata's unusual food request and it was now in her presence that she saw just how irritating and annoying the lady could be when she wanted to.

It was insufferable, Hirumi wanted to laugh out loud at that silly man's expression, but held her tongue as she continued to chaperone.

"Is something the matter, my lord?" Hinata asked, stepping closer to Lord Madoka who by this point was leaning against one of the work buildings, his face still turned away from her.

"Must you always talk this much?" Lord Madoka quipped and Hinata immediately turned red, batting her eyelashes wide, tears instantly coming to the surface, much to the lord's chagrin.

"Oh, my lord I am so sorry! You must forgive my excitement. I suppose I got overwhelmed by your presence! Please accept my apologies." She hurriedly spoke, talking almost right into his face.

He turned away from her and scowled. "Does your breath always smell like this?"

"Like…what?"

"Like garlic."

Hinata blinked as if confused. "I'm not sure what you mean my lord. No one has ever mentioned that to me."

He rolled his eyes sighing as he took her arm reluctantly. "I see. Let's walk back. I have much to do in this town. I'm very busy as you understand, milady."

Hinata nodded, still maintaining her chatty demeanor until Lord Madoka and her stepped into her home, wasting no time to call on Lord Hyuuga to get away from her.

Hirumi immediately pulled Lady Hinata into the kitchen, wrinkling her nose as she struggled to contain herself.

"Milady that was," Hirumi burst into a fit of giggles unable to continue as Hinata laughed along with her, trying to keep quiet as their host was still in their home.

"I suppose he won't be asking for my hand, quite a pity." Hinata lamented, laughing into her palm so she wouldn't be too loud.

"Your breath is quite ripe however. We shall need to fix that immediately."

They both looked at each other and laughed again.

Shikamaru frowned, looking over the detailed map, pinning the locations where the Fox had attacked.

The man was a mystery, and tales of his encounters conflicted widely, even from those who had survived.

A series of attacks on merchant ships, from the Land of Fire, five years ago…

He was an enigma, a clear masculine voice with no discernible accent. He wore a Fox shaped mask while the rest of his crew wore animal masks that varied from a dog to a bird. They all wore black, head to toe, and tied black bandanas around their heads, no doubt to hide their hair as even that could provide a clue to their identity.

Numerous reports of piracy on small cargo ships, from Land of Earth, four years ago…

Some men who had survived their encounter with them swore it had been over a hundred men in their crew, devilishly killing those who stood up to them. Others had said it was a smaller crew who had quickly robbed them of their valuables and then left them alone, content with not spilling blood.

An attack on another merchant strip, from the Land of Rivers, three years ago…

The Fox didn't work alone, that much was obvious. He had allies. In how many lands? Maybe everywhere, maybe just a few. It was unclear. They helped him know which ships to target, which ports to use, and where the government shinobi were hiding. Valuable information that was not easy or cheap to pay off.

Numerous attacks in between, in the Lands of Water, Lightning, and Wind…

He had a loyal team indeed if it had been years and no one had turned him in yet.

He was indiscriminate and cunning, attacking every country and territory without regard, except for one with a much higher incidence…

There were many pieces if information missing, details he played out in his head that made little sense, and he wished he had more information from those who had survived his thievery.

In any case Shikamaru knew where he had to start. The land teaming with rogues and more pirates than anywhere else. The land the Fox had attacked much more frequently than others, either by convenience or other matters.

The Land of Water.

"Is there a reason you're asking for this money?" Her father grumbled.

"You heard Mr. Uzumaki. If we are unable to thank him, the hospital and orphanage could make do of the money." she answered easily, not missing the way her father's eyes sterned, while her uncle chose to remain quiet.

Her father remained in silence and for a moment she nearly lost her nerve, but steeled herself, looking directly at him. "Do you have an issue with what I am doing, father?"

A beat, then a simple "No."

"Then if it's alright with you, I would like to go there now. Which of our kinsmen will accompany me?"

"Hakaru," her father called out loudly, his eyes still trained on his daughter betraying none of the shock he felt. "Accompany Lady Hinata around town. Instruct Iroha and Hoheshi to deliver the money as planned."

"Yes sir." Hakaru replied, promptly going to inform her respective family members.

Hinata gripped her umbrella tightly, her knuckles almost going white. "Thank you, father."

At that his gaze softened, realizing this was a true endeavor for her, something she wished to fulfill. It was noble indeed after all, he assumed that her empathetic and kind nature realized they were in a position to help.

It still didn't make it any less jarring. She had always been a quiet child, uncomfortable with displaying brute honesty so seeing her this determined was definitely a new sight.

And to think he'd almost lost her. He sighed then, his hands suddenly shaking.

He would never stop being grateful that she was still with him.

"Hinata?"

"Yes, father?"

"Give them my regards and let them know a second shipment will be coming soon."

At that Hinata beamed. "I will."

She left with Hakaru soon after and she went to the orphanage, where she was thanked by Mr. Yakushi with such fervor Hinata almost thought he'd begin sobbing.

He was a quiet man from what little she knew of him. He hadn't married despite having an illustrious career as a shinobi, medic, and now orphanage director along with his brother. He was a bit odd, but Hinata found his presence comforting and by the looks the children gave him, Mr. Yakushi was not only well-respected but absolutely adored.

After pulling herself away, she and Hakaru headed towards the hospital where she had the same sort of encounter with Miss Shizune who was overjoyed at the news and thanked her tremendously. Miss Nohara was currently away and Shizune promised to let her know as soon as she returned to Konoha.

As Hakaru was still waiting outside, Hinata took the liberty of walking to Sakura's office only to almost bump into her as Sakura was hurrying out.

"Oh Hinata! What brings you here?"

"I can return at another time. I would hate to interrupt-"

"Nonsense! Come with me. We're getting some supplies ready for a training later."

Sakura pulled Hinata with her into an packed storage room where she looked around, puling at drawers to search for what she needed.

"You seem to be quite busy." Hinata noted apologetically, drawing her umbrella closer to herself as Sakura kept grabbing supplies around the room.

Sakura waved her hand, dismissing her. "I'm simply preparing for a demonstration. Lady Tsunade seems to want to keep me pretty busy in training the new staff. What did you want to talk about?"

"I was wondering something, but I wasn't sure if you would be amenable to it," she admitted shyly, clutching her umbrella tighter.

"Well, what was it?"

"I was going to ask if you needed help, as a volunteer I mean."

Sakura froze and turned back to face her.

"I could use my Byakugan if it helps any with your patients," Hinata continued quickly, her nervousness breaking through. "I am not interested in being a medic, but I remember it being useful in Kiri with Neji's leg-"

Sakura's eyes widened "You would do it? Oh, that'd be amazing Hinata!"

"You think so?"

"I know so! We're continuously short-staffed and we don't have anybody with your talents here! Even if you're not interested in becoming a medic it would be incredibly helpful to have you with us!"

Sakura could barely contain her excitement slowly igniting Hinata's spirit.

"Will your father be…okay with this arrangement?" Sakura asked, realizing for the first time that Hinata, as a noble woman, needed permission to be able to engage in these activities.

"Well…I was hoping I would be able to help in secret?"

"And just what excuse were you going to give your father?"

"Let me worry about that. I think I've thought of something that will work."

There was an unusual spark in Hinata's eyes and Sakura grinned widely.

Whatever it was that had ignited it, she was thankful.

October 19, 1677

Dear Naruto,

I'm happy to hear of the progress on the bridge. I hope they take time to rest during the cold season. I saw firsthand how hard they worked so I know they are all overdue for a break. Remember to take a break yourself as well.

The Land of Whirlpools is inhabited by rogues now, but I know that's not likely to stop you from your search. I am confident you will be able to find what you are looking for there. Take heed in what you find and do not hesitate to let me know if you need any help from Konoha.

I would be glad to coordinate the sale of some of our family's silks. I will speak to my father about it and let you know the details. I hope you find it amusing that your comment about my family being painstakingly selective made me chuckle quite a bit. Be sure it is an older Hyuuga trait that has us younger Hyuugas wincing visibly.

I know you will make it a fair trade this time. You don't break your promises.

Please take care. I will see you soon.

Hinata

Naruto smiled at the letter, paying special attention over the parts where she worried about him. She'd seen him kill a man and yet she thought him worthy of worry still.

The little faith she had in him was both concerning and amusing.

He tucked the letter into his pockets, the rain beginning to pelt down their backs as they continued our journey inland.

Hinata had sent a letter to Ino's home right after her encounter with her suitor. And when Ino opened the letter and saw the words Thank you she merely laughed.

Good for Hinata, Ino thought, grinning at the younger woman's grit.

In the days that followed Hinata was keeping herself quite busy.

Miss Nohara returned soon after and she was just as enthusiastic as Sakura when it came to Hinata. She requested Hinata to go ahead and start reading the preliminary books to introductory terminology, anatomy recognition, afflictions, and how to name them to start.

Hinata spent the day before the wedding eagerly reading the new material, the venue prepared, the decorations ready, the menu decided, the last of her worries to make her cousins' day a success placated.

She read by candlelight until the moon was too high in the sky and she drifted to soundly sleep.

The following morning began in relative chaos in the Hyuuga household, her sister and she got prepared, donning the traditional Hyuuga robes as they hurried to finish any last-minute items before preparing for the ceremony ahead.

Almost every single Hyuuga house member would be in attendance, eager to watch the illustrious branch leader and his new bride formalize their status.

The morning of the wedding was a tumultuous affair in multiple noble households. The Uchiha were no exception.

Naruto had rushed home, bad weather plaguing his journey on the way back, having arrived just that morning which was already looking cloudy and overcast, imminent rain threatening to spill.

Izumi had been kind enough to get him some new clothing, much to his embarrassment, and he thanked her profusely for taking the time to do so.

He accompanied them and Sakura to the wedding, trying to not show how exhausted he was as he momentarily kept dozing off in the carriage.

Eventually they made it, the entire place decorated and organized beautifully. He could tell the Yamanaka had a wondrous time fulfilling their role, judging by the sheer greenery and flowers he could spot around the room.

He wordlessly sat in between Sasuke and Sakura, fidgeting slightly in his seat as he stared straight ahead.

Sakura wasted no time chatting with Lee and Gai Sensei to the right of her while Naruto remained in silence for once, content to just watch everyone else enter the room.

Ordinarily the ceremony was smaller, limited to relatives and close friends, Itachi had explained to him. But Neji and Tenten had many close friends who wanted to be included.

Not to mention, at least on Neji's side, a large family who would attend.

It was a fortunate problem to have.

There was a silence that fell over the audience, soft music ending, signaling the beginning of the ceremony.

And then the couple appeared, bowing at the audience before sitting in front of each other, ready to be wed.

Naruto had resigned himself to a life alone, much like Jiraiya had. There was likely no one out there that would care for him in that way, with all of his flaws. It didn't matter. He would be fine visiting Sasuke and Sakura's children, and was more than happy to play the role of fun uncle.

But it did weigh on him, in moments like today. It was the way Neji and Tenten looked at each other that made him want to simultaneously look away and yet stare at them, all at once.

He didn't understand the complexity of their feelings of love. Maybe he never would, but seeing them together brought him joy and he was content to appreciate the scene as the ceremony was about to commence.

As the betrothed stood in front of each other, Naruto saw Hinata in the distance, many rows ahead of them and their eyes met inevitably, causing both to freeze in the moment.

He vividly remembered their kiss, and by the blush on her face so did she.

Seeing her brought back all the feelings he'd been trying to repress, and his chest tightened and he found it impossible to break away.

It had taken him years to realize she was alluring and enticing; in ways he still did not fathom.

Only an instant since their eyes had met, and yet it felt like a lifetime.

Hinata smiled at him and he shot her a wide smile back, winking at her quickly.

Despite her turning away he could see the blush on her cheeks spread to her neck and that made him smile even wider.

Naruto would never tire of teasing her.

"Excited for the nuptials?" Sakura probed quietly, confused at why her teammate was smiling almost as widely as the bride.

"But of course. Neji and Tenten are our friends after all."

Sakura merely raised her eyebrows, carefully following his line of sight and her eyes twinkled at realizing who he had been looking at.

"Of course." She agreed, smiling to herself.

A million colors called to Neji's attention.

His lovable, if albeit sometimes annoying, comrades dressed head to toe in green as they grinned widely at them.

The Yamanaka family's classic purple bush clovers carefully adorned the entire room.

The different sized gold glasses shining brightly on the table front of them.

The orange candlelight flickering in the corner of his eyes.

The white kimono she wore as she fidgeted on the mat.

But he was blind to all of them, hopelessly stuck on brown.

Brown eyes...

Warmth, life, temperance.

Brown eyes that had enraptured his very soul.

He'd never felt self-conscious about his eyes, they were a sign of his strength after all. They stood for things that were unreachable to others, status, lineage, power.

In comparison her eyes were nothing special, nothing out of the ordinary, eyes that a million others possessed.

But they smiled for him over a meal, they cried for him when he was in pain, they sassed him when he made her angry.

And they loved him with every touch he made on her body.

In his youth he had hated his fate, agonized over never becoming the head of his clan despite being the most talented. He had been burdened with anger for a long time until she and others had gradually softened his heart.

Neji had hated his fate and yet…

He swallowed hard barely hearing the words of others around him before repeating the words that would resolve himself to her.

Looking at the woman in front of him, unapologetically herself, he could clearly envision a life with those powerful eyes of his. A wondrous life it would be indeed.

This fate was not a cruel twist of destiny.

This fate was his choice, carved out of his own hands.

This fate he could manage.

Lord Hizashi was having a rough time trying to hold it together. Even after the ceremony had concluded and the reception began, he kept covering his face and looking away, the normally stoic expression their clan was known for replaced by one of unshed tears.

"Uncle?" Hinata asked gently, "Are you alright?"

He patted her shoulder as he blinked hard. "I'm fine my dear, just…" he sighed, "I wish his mother could've been here."

"You needn't worry uncle. I'm sure she's watching over us all." Hinata spoke, giving her uncle an embrace. "We Hyuuga have the same eyes, remember?"

At that Hizashi blinked rapidly, his tears breaking through and he gave her a strong embrace.

"Right as ever, Hinata."

The rain pelted loudly outside, the gray sky unable to hold it back, as her new cousin danced with his new bride, the guests in attendance mesmerized at their new appearance, having switched into different clothing for the reception.

It made her unbelievably happy to see them like this, especially when it had been uncertain for so long if they would be able to marry.

She was glad her plight had brought Neji his happiness.

And apparently not just him and Tenten either. Gai Sensei and Mr. Lee were weeping more than her family had, as they embraced in each other, a blubbering mess than made Neji still wince in chagrin and caused Tenten no slight embarrassment.

Still, Hinata was delighted in their blatant show of affection. Uncle Hizashi had been truly thankful to the two of them for looking after his son and new daughter in their youth.

She saw other couples dancing around the floor, lost in the uplifting music and happy conversation, not missing the sudden appearance of Ino at Naruto's table.

Hinata looked away quickly, her lips forming a thin line.

She wished she had her confidence.

He wasn't in an irritable mood, but Naruto was feeling bothered.

Ever since their last encounter something about Hinata had entranced him, seemingly all at once. It bothered him so much he was engaging drinking as a distraction.

Sasuke was not slow to notice, eyeing his friend warily as he was served another glass by the Hyuuga servers.

"This is not one of the dubious bars you frequent." Sasuke reminded him and Naruto rolled his eyes, the alcohol burning his throat.

Maybe that would distract him from the pressure in his chest.

"Mind your own business and ask Sakura out for a dance." He retorted, the immediate sour expression in his teammate bringing a smirk to his face.

A smirk that was immediately extinguished.

"Naruto, I have been waiting patiently..."

He spun around, dreading the airy voice that had called out to him. "Hello Ino."

"Lady Ino," she reminded him, "I'm ready for our dance."

Sasuke snickered and Naruto shot him a dirty look.

There were just so many people here, refusing her would look awful for everyone included.

"I don't remember promising you a dance."

"Seeing as how you're one of the few men in the room that does not intend to marry me, you are a safe bet." Ino answered honestly while Naruto flushed at her words.

"I see."

He'd done the polite act and bowed to her, extending his hand to lead her to the floor, already dreading it.

"You look quite sharp tonight." She commented flirtatiously and he raised his eyebrows.

"Fishing for a compliment?"

"It's always nice to receive one. Why? Do I not look lovely this evening?"

"You're shameless," he grunted, his face flushed with the alcohol's warmth, "I'm not quite sure why you enjoy dancing with me."

"I don't enjoy dancing with you. I simply prefer you in comparison any of the other potential suitors who may look this way. And I do quite enjoy it."

"It's not for me."

Ino rolled her eyes. "No matter. I wasn't sure if you'd make it back in town in time for the wedding. Rare of you to visit Konoha so often, no?"

"This was a special request from Neji. I could not simply refuse." Naruto answered, trying to keep up with the music's pace.

"The wedding is lovely, many thanks to our family's decorations of course," Ino spoke, her giggling making Naruto chuckle briefly, "And perhaps Hinata's will be soon as well."

Naruto stopped dead in his tracks, causing Ino to step on his foot, looking absolutely mortified. She practically had to force him to move as they were briefly catching stray eyes wandering in their direction.

"What did you do that for?" Ino demanded, her face heated as she looked around the room in embarrassment.

"What do you mean 'Hinata's will be soon'?"

"Honestly, it seems as if your manners got worse. This is no way to treat a lady-"

"Ino," Naruto spoke, his voice louder than necessary, "What did you mean by Hinata's will be soon?"

She huffed in annoyance for an instant before really looking at his face.

He almost looked…wounded. And it was enough for her to extend a brief moment of sympathy.

"Her father wants her to marry soon. She's started seeing suitors, just this week."

Naruto's arms chilled despite the heavy blue coat he was wearing.

Hinata's words came back to him, the words she'd shared with him long ago during their short stay in the Land of Waves. How sure she was that her father would marry her off to a lord from some distant land, having to be content with living a tolerable life because she could not do anything else.

"Shit." Anger was settling deep in his throat.

"That's no language to use here." Ino whispered, pinching his hand until he winced, "There are other people around!"

She could see he was angry and the mischievous part of her angled them both around so he could see Hinata from his point of view.

"I helped her avoid the first suitor, quite effortlessly if I may add, so she is not to be wed immediately, but there will be others," she paused dramatically, "Unless she decides something different."

Naruto blinked and looked down at Ino, momentarily enraptured by seeing Hinata dancing with Kiba, laughing in his arms.

Why the hell was he always around her?

"Others?"

"She's a beautiful, rich, young woman. Smart as hell, but most men won't appreciate that. They never do, but they will continue court her regardless."

He was transfixed by Ino's words then. She had described everything he thought about Hinata and yet the only thing he could think to say was, "Ladies shouldn't use such language."

Ino stepped on his foot again, this time on purpose, before the music stopped and they bowed at each other.

She noted the direction he walked off in and she winked at Sakura who had not missed any of what had just transpired.

How she loved causing trouble.

"Lady Hinata, might I have this dance?"

Naruto's voice was raspy, as if he'd been drinking and Hinata clenched her legs together as a wave of something…she was not sure what, overcame her.

His voice sounded velvety smooth, like sin.

And he'd used her formal title this time, though she wasn't sure if it was for her benefit or for her family's, who currently were elsewhere.

"Of course, Mr. Uzumaki." She responded to his manners, briefly glancing at her father's back. He was speaking with Uncle Hizashi about something so he wasn't looking at her.

Hinata bowed at him and he reciprocated, leading her into the floor as her heart soared against her chest.

Naruto pulled her close, Ino's words still tumbling around his head. "You look beautiful this evening."

She almost stopped dancing if not for his careful leadership. Her face had flamed and she couldn't bear to look at him, the scent of alcohol wavering from his throat that made her almost dizzy.

We're friends. He is being polite, she reminded herself, unconsciously gripping his hand tighter.

"Thank you. You look quite handsome yourself." She responded bravely, glancing up to look into his eyes.

That was much easier to say when she was tipsy and she wished she'd had a drink if she knew this is where the conversation was heading.

His ocean eyes were dark and they roamed her body ever so slowly that she felt her legs shift and her flush intensify under his gaze.

Oh…this was new...

Desire wrapped its clenches around her as Hinata felt herself grab his hand tighter.

Her eyes broke away from his, feeling her heart accelerate as he refused to back down.

"Ino says you're entertaining suitors."

Hinata heaved a sigh. She'd wanted to tell him directly, but she'd had ample opportunity to. There was no one to blame but herself.

"Ino's right. She helped me dissuade a particular nasty lord this week."

"Will you do that for the others?" He asked, gripping her hand tightly.

"Why do you care?" Hinata asked and he lowered his eyes in shame.

Why did he care?

"You're my friend," he settled finally, "I wish for you to be happy. Perhaps you, like Ino would prefer to be unmarried?"

"I want to get married." Hinata whispered finally, missing the way Naruto's eyes saddened, "I want that life for myself, but I'm afraid it will not be with someone I love."

How could it be when her heart remained with this man in front of her, who seemed worlds apart?

"You seem sure of that." He spoke finally, spinning her around before catching her again.

"I am very sure. My father will let me choose amongst my suitors, but love will not be a factor."

But she wants that life, Naruto thought, unexpected sadness rising in his throat.

She wanted it and despite her words of never finding love, any man would be lucky to love her.

Knowing her, she'd find someone just as kind and warm as she was…if he stayed away.

It weighed heavily on his mind, the imprudence he had had with her. Even right now he was damaging her reputation by associating with him. And if anyone found out about how he'd kissed her she would be ruined.

He was not so selfish a friend that he would put his lust on top of her happiness.

That's all it was, he decided, lust. And that was easily cured with other women.

The song ended and they bowed to each other.

He left and walked quickly towards the outside while Hinata looked back at her father and uncle, still in deep conversation before deciding to follow him.

"Leaving without saying goodbye?" she asked, before he passed through the doorway.

The rain had subsided now, leaving the air damp and heavy.

Something had changed. She could feel it.

Naruto closed his eyes, steeling his resolve, before extending his hand towards her.

"Goodbye Hinata."

The moonlight shone on his silhouette, basking him in white. It was sad in a way she couldn't explain.

"Will I see you again?" She asked, as she took his hand and held it tightly.

It hurt. Even after numerous goodbyes it still hurt for her to hear him say it. Not when their reunion was uncertain every time.

It was torture for her. Torture she gladly would revisit every time as was necessary, if for only a couple of moments, but torture nonetheless.

He smiled wistfully, the cool air tussling his hair ever so gently. "I'm just a letter away if you need me."

He had not responded to her question.

Naruto wanted nothing more than for her to be happy. And the answer was there, in one of her future suitors.

His mere presence put her in a lesser position to choose. He would not repeat that ever again.

And he walked into the night, as she leaned into door frame, embracing herself.

He knew she was still looking at him and Naruto swallowed hard as he fought with every bone in his body to not turn back…

To not turn back…and steal her away.
