Harvest Moon: Jack & Claire
Chapter 1
The season of Spring is synonymous with new beginnings—a time when the snow melts, the grass reawakens, and life stirs from Winter's slumber. The air is crisp, birds return from their southern journey, and animals emerge, heralding the start of a new year filled with new dreams.
Across the vast expanse of the ocean, a boat sails toward the quaint community of Mineral Town, carrying a very special passenger. A beautiful young woman rushes to the bow, gripping the railing with anticipation as the vessel approaches the dock. Her long blonde hair dances in the sea breeze, and her aqua blue eyes sparkle with excitement for the new life awaiting her. After a long journey, she is eager to begin her career as a rancher.
In the pocket of her overalls rests a newspaper clipping—an advertisement for a farm for sale in Mineral Town. The affordability of the land was a surprise to her, and she wasted no time in purchasing it. She dreams of a bustling farm filled with a variety of animals, and perhaps a horse to race across the globe. With her dream on the cusp of reality, she can hardly wait to get started.
As the boat reaches the dock, she disembarks, breathing in the salty air, relishing the refreshing breeze under a cloudless sky. It feels like the perfect day to begin her new adventure. With a nod of determination, she rushes off the dock, her sneakers pounding against the wooden planks, her rucksack bouncing on her back. A nametag dangles from the rucksack, bearing the name "Claire."
Entering Rose Square for the first time, Claire takes in the sights of her new community. The village she left behind was rustic, with old-fashioned homes and dirt roads. In contrast, Mineral Town is more modern, with cobblestone roads, streetlights, and closely-knit houses. While she is accustomed to the simplicity of rural life, she feels she can quickly adapt to this vibrant town.
In the square, she notices a trio of middle-aged women gossiping, while children play nearby, their laughter filling the air. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, and she looks forward to meeting the locals once she's settled into her farm. Opting for a leisurely route, she decides to explore more of the town before heading to her new home. As she heads north, she comes across the town's church, where she spots two men conversing outside—the pastor, Carter, and a vagabond named Cliff. She waves at them, and they wave back. As Claire continues up the road, Cliff watches her, murmuring, "So pretty." In those few fleeting moments, he feels the stirrings of infatuation.
The journey ahead promises challenges and discoveries, but Claire is ready to embrace it all. With the spirit of Spring in her heart, she takes her first steps into a future brimming with possibilities.
As Claire continues down the road, she passes by the town clinic and notices more people gathered outside. Doctor Trent is in the middle of a consultation with a young man named Rick, discussing concerns about Rick's mother. They pause in their conversation, momentarily stunned, as Claire waves at them. Her long golden hair catches the sunlight, drawing their attention. They both wave back, slightly blushing.
"Who is that?" Rick asks, eyes still following Claire.
"I don't know, but she sure is cute," Doctor Trent responds, a note of admiration in his voice.
Claire turns left at the corner, venturing down a quieter road. She passes the library on her left, with the blacksmith shop and chicken ranch further down. As she approaches the blacksmith's, a young man named Gray steps out for a breath of fresh air. He wipes his brow and adjusts his hat, letting the cool breeze soothe his skin. His eyes quickly land on Claire as she walks by. She waves, and he shyly returns the gesture, tilting his hat to partially cover his face. Her lovely blue eyes make his heart race a bit faster.
"She's so cute. Who could she be?" Gray murmurs to himself, still watching her as she continues on her way.
Up ahead, Claire finally sees the farm that will soon be her new home. Her excitement builds as she walks up the steps and crosses the gate into the farm property. She gasps as she surveys the scene before her. The field is barren, but in her mind's eye, she can already see it teeming with grass and livestock. Another gasp escapes her as she spots the stable, barn, and coop scattered around the farm. Though old and in need of some care, the buildings have a charming potential that fills her with anticipation. She can't wait to breathe new life into them.
Her eyes then fall on the farmhouse—a spacious structure, big enough to accommodate a whole family comfortably. As she approaches, she notices a young man standing in front of the house. He appears slightly older than she is and is dressed in a blue country outfit. She squints, trying to place him.
"Could that be Mayor Thomas?" she whispers to herself. She recalls hearing that the mayor was a short man, but this individual is quite tall. "Oh, I get it. He must work nearby. It wouldn't hurt to introduce myself."
With proud determination, Claire walks up to the man, ready to make her first acquaintance in Mineral Town. The possibilities ahead seem endless, and she is eager to start this new chapter of her life.
Claire walks up to the young man and greets him with a friendly, "Hello there!"
The young man turns around and greets her with a warm smile, "Good afternoon. It's nice to meet you." He extends his hand, introducing himself, "My name is Jackie Greenvalley, but people just call me Jack. What's your name?"
She shakes his hand, smiling back, "My name is Clarissa Aoi, but you can call me Claire for short. I just moved here to Mineral Town. I hope we can be friends."
Jack's eyes widen in surprise and delight. "What a coincidence! So did I. I'm waiting for Mayor Thomas to give me the deed to the land I bought."
"Same here. Where is he, anyway?" Claire asks, looking around.
"I'm right here," a voice calls out, drawing their attention. Mayor Thomas, the short and cheerful mayor of Mineral Town, walks into the farm, his face beaming with a welcoming smile. "Well, look at that! You two have already met each other. That makes this a little easier. Welcome to Mineral Town! I'm Mayor Thomas. It brings me joy to see young folk like you taking an interest in the ancient art of farming. On behalf of the town, thank you for purchasing land here to start your careers. Your hard work and effort will be greatly appreciated, and together, the town will thrive!"
Jack and Claire nod cheerfully. Mayor Thomas hands each of them a document and a set of keys, explaining, "Here are your copies of the deed to the farm, one for each of you. I hope to see great results from your endeavors. Feel free to visit my office if you have any questions."
As Mayor Thomas turns to leave, Jack and Claire look down at the paperwork in their hands, realizing that the documents are identical. A moment of confusion passes between them as they comprehend the situation—they have both purchased the same plot of land and are now expected to share it.
"Hey!" they both shout simultaneously, chasing after the mayor.
Thomas turns back, a look of mild surprise on his face. "Is there anything wrong?"
"Yeah, something is definitely wrong," Claire says, her voice tinged with frustration.
"You sold the farm to both of us! That wasn't part of the deal," Jack adds, his tone equally perplexed.
Mayor Thomas, unfazed, pulls out the contracts that Jack and Claire signed. "According to article 13 of the contract, which you both signed, each of you paid for half of the farm. The fine print clearly states that you qualify for a fifty percent discount if someone else covers the other half. So, you are both co-owners of the farm and must share it."
"Shit!, nobody reads the fine print," Claire whines, glancing over the contract again.
"This is still unacceptable. I want my money back," Jack demands, his frustration evident.
Mayor Thomas sighs and points to another part of the contract. "I'm afraid I can't do that. Article 15 of the contract clearly states that the sale of the farm is final and non-refundable. The farm belongs to both parties, unless one abandons the farm or agrees to buy the other's share." He puts the contracts away and adds, "Any other questions?"
Jack, feeling defeated, shakes his head. "I guess not."
Thomas offers a reassuring smile. "Good. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a lot of work to do. Enjoy your new farm, you two. The town is counting on you." With that, he leaves.
Jack takes a deep breath and looks at Claire. He pats her shoulder and says, "I guess we're going to be co-workers and roommates from now on. Let's take a look at the house."
Claire hesitates. "Wait, you can't be serious! We can't live together; I don't even know you!"
"If you have any better ideas or enough money to buy my half of the farm, I'm all ears. Otherwise, what choice do we have?"
Claire reluctantly admits he has a point. She has no extra money and no other options. She sighs deeply, resigning herself to sharing the house and farm with Jack. She should have known a cheap farm was too good to be true. She follows Jack into the house, hoping things won't get awkward before she figures something out.
Inside, they both gasp in amazement. The house is clean and newly renovated. The electricity works, the kitchen has running water, the bathroom furniture is new, and everything is ready for them to move in. It's more than they could have hoped for.
"I wonder where the bedrooms are," Jack muses as he explores the house.
"Over here," Claire replies, her tone tinged with nervousness. Jack walks over to the bedroom door and peeks inside. There's only one large bedroom with two beds—a full-sized bed and a queen-sized bed, each on opposite sides of the room. "They actually expect us to share a room?"
"I'm fine with it," Jack says casually. He walks to the full-sized bed and lies down, getting comfortable. "I'll take this bed. Why don't you have the bigger one? I prefer smaller beds anyway."
"Gee, thanks. What a gentleman you are," Claire retorts sarcastically. She leaves the room to take another look around the house, letting out a sigh as she processes the reality of her situation. She now has a surprise roommate, but the house and farm are nice enough. She resolves to make the best of it, at least for now. After all, they both spent all their savings on this property. They'll have to learn to live together peacefully until one of them leaves or buys out the other.
"Darn, nobody reads the fine print," Claire whines, glancing over the contract again.
