Christmas Shoes
Disclaimer: I don't own Glee
It was a cold December evening in Lima, Ohio. The streets were adorned with twinkling lights, and the air was filled with the scent of pine and the sound of carolers singing festive tunes. Inside the Hummel household, the atmosphere starkly contrasted with the joyous celebrations outside.
Eight-year-old Kurt Hummel sat quietly by the window, watching the snowflakes dance in the air. His heart was heavy with worry and sadness. His mother, Elizabeth, had been battling cancer for months, and her condition had worsened significantly. The doctors had told Burt, Kurt's father, that Elizabeth might not make it through the holidays.
Kurt's eyes welled up with tears as he thought about his mom. She had always been his rock, his source of comfort and love. She had a knack for turning even the most impossible situations into something better. But now, she was the one who needed comfort, and Kurt felt helpless.
Burt entered the room, his face etched with sorrow. He knelt beside Kurt and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Hey, buddy," he said softly. "How are you holding up?"
Kurt sniffled and wiped his eyes. "I don't want Mom to go, Dad," he whispered.
Burt's heart ached for his son. "I know, Kurt. I don't want her to go either. But we have to be strong for her, okay? She needs us now more than ever."
Kurt nodded, trying to be brave. He glanced at the small Christmas tree in the corner of the room. It was decorated with handmade ornaments and twinkling lights, but it felt incomplete without his mom's laughter and warmth.
As the evening wore on, Burt suggested they go out for a walk to clear their minds. Kurt reluctantly agreed, and they bundled up in their coats and scarves. They walked through the snow-covered streets, the cold air biting their cheeks. A pair of stunning red shoes, embellished with delicate ribbons and sparkles, caught his eye in the window display. Kurt's heart skipped a beat. He recalled his mom expressing her love for red shoes and long-standing desire to own a pair just like those.
"Dad, can we go inside?" Kurt asked, his voice filled with a mix of hope and urgency.
Burt looked at the shoes and then at his son. He understood immediately. "Of course, Kurt." Once inside the store, Kurt gently picked up the pair of shoes and hugged them on his chest. "I want to get these for Mom," he said. "I want her to have something special for Christmas."
Burt's eyes filled with tears as he watched his son's determination. "Let's get them, then."
They purchased the shoes and hurried back home. Kurt couldn't wait to give them to his mom. He hoped that, even in her weakened state, the pair of shoes would bring her a moment of joy.
When they returned, Elizabeth rested in her bed, breathing shallow and labored. Kurt approached her gently, holding the shoes behind his back.
"Mom," he said softly. "I got you something."
Elizabeth opened her eyes and smiled weakly at her son. "What is it, sweetheart?"
Kurt revealed the shoes, his eyes shining with love. "I got these for you. I know you always wanted a pair like this."
Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears as she reached out to touch the shoes. "Oh, Kurt, they're beautiful. Thank you, my darling."
Kurt gently slipped the shoes onto her feet, and Elizabeth's face radiated with happiness. She looked at her son and husband, with love and gratitude.
As the night went on, Elizabeth's condition worsened. Burt and Kurt stayed by her side, holding her hands and whispering words of comfort. In the early hours of Christmas morning, Elizabeth took her last breath, surrounded by the love of her family.
Kurt clung to his father, his heart shattered by the loss. But he found solace in knowing that he had given his mom a final gift of love and joy. The red shoes would forever symbolize their unbreakable bond and the love that would continue to live on in their hearts.
The End. A/N: I thought this was a great idea. I know it's not Christmas yet but I woke up thinking about turning two songs into a story. This was one of them.
