ACT XIII: Comet, the Underestimated Chapter 16: Taffy's Revenge

Magic Sanctuary, Mewni.

Comet couldn't sleep.

Not just because he was laying down on Mewni's most uncomfortable slab of marble, but also because of the thoughts running through his head. At first, all he wondered about was what Marcia was doing and how she felt about his confession, but now he began to think about Taffy and how much pain and misery she had caused his father. Then there was also the fact that his father had lied to him about his grandfather being killed, and kept the secret of his connection to the Dark Dimension.

Taking a deep breath, Comet sat up on the slab and took his compact mirror out of his pocket. He lazily scrolled past the pictures of himself and Marcia until he came upon the picture of Comet the Chef's tapestry. The prince could hardly believe that his grandfather once tried to make peace with the monster society. But then again, after working with Buff Frog to save Marcia, he noted that cooperation between mewmans and monsters wasn't impossible. Heck, he had even given the frog monster a house to raise her adopted tadpoles in after their partnership had concluded, splitting up on good terms. If he and Buff Frog could get along, why couldn't other monsters and mewmans?

Clearly, Comet the First thought it was possible. And he had actively tried to make that a reality. The prince wondered what Marcia would think if she'd been told his grandfather tried to make peace. But he shook those thoughts out of his head as he focused back on the matter at hand. Taffy was possessing Luna, wielding half of the magic in his scepter, and was now more than likely plotting her attack on Castle Dragonfly. Mars wanted to lay low and hide, but Comet couldn't stop thinking about all the innocent lives that could be caught in Taffy's path. Lives that his family were responsible for.

"I wish you were here, grandpa." Comet sighed. "You'd probably know what to do."

"It's not healthy to think one person has all the answers." A warm voice called out, accompanied by the smell of a freshly baked pie. The mewman prince turned around and his eyes nearly popped out. Standing behind him, carrying a piping-hot pie of red solanaceae and wearing an apron over his suit, was none other than the prince's namesake.

"Grandpa?!" Comet the Second spluttered. "What're you doing here?! Dad told me you were dead!"

"I am dead." Comet the First nodded as he set down the pie.

"Then, how are you here?"

"Well, if I had to make a guess, I'd say this is probably just a dream you're having as a reaction to learning that I was killed by Taffy and that you inherited a connection to Dark Magic, so your subconscious mind created a hypothetical conversation for you with someone you've admired your whole life as a way of processing the information."

"Huh…" Comet the Second scratched his head as he processed the claim. "It doesn't feel like a dream."

"Then how do you explain the anime waifus having a tea party around your slumbering father?"

Comet the Second turned around, instinctively. Sure enough, Nico Robin from One Piece, Chi-Chi from Dragon Ball, and Mina Ashido from My Hero Academia were seated in a circle, drinking tea and chatting about their respective franchises while Mars slept, soundly. The young prince tilted his head to the side as he studied the scene for a few more seconds before turning back to his grandfather. "Okay, yeah, this is a dream."

Comet the First chuckled and took out a pie-spade to offer up a slice. Comet the Second accepted the slice of pie and sat down next to Comet the First. The prince took a bite and immediately felt a small smile spreading over his lips. He had tasted pie of red solanaceae before, but Mars insisted that the royal chefs could never come close to replicating the taste of Comet the First's cooking.

"So… a penny for your thoughts?" Comet the First asked.

Comet the Second set his plate aside and rested his chin on his fists. "Well, in the first place, I just found out that my dad made a deal with Eclipsine. And because of that, I have these crazy dark magic powers when - the whole time - I thought I'd finally learned how to dip down. And then, there's the fact that the Scepter is broken so I might never be able to use light magic on my own. And also, uh… there's this girl I really like."

"Ah, young love. Truly, there is nothing as equally frightening as it is exciting. I, myself, have had a rather rocky experience in that particular field."Comet the First sighed. "But that's a story for another pie."

"It's fine. That's not my most pressing concern right now." Comet the Second groaned and looked back at his father. "I just feel like we're wasting time! I don't want to have to wait for the Magical High Commission to recover before we go take on Taffy! I think if Dad and I work together, we can take her! But if I'm wrong… I might lose him like he lost you. What do you think, grandpa?"

"Well, look at it this way…" Comet the First set his own plate and fork aside and took his grandson's hands into his own as they locked eyes. "Mars already had to lose his father. It'd be a shame if he had to watch his son die, too, don't you think?"

Comet the Second rubbed his chin as he thought hard about what his grandfather had said. "Hmm… so what you're saying is… I should leave dad here and deal with this myself so he can't blame himself for anything that goes wrong!" The prince stood up with a smile, ignoring his grandfather's horrified expression as he moved to pinch his arm. "Thanks for the advice, grandpa!"

"What?! No, you stupid kid! I was trying to talk you out of-!"

Comet woke up with a start. Glancing around the area, he could see that the Commission was still drained of magic and his father was still asleep. He quietly tip-toed over to the slumbering king and cupped his hands around his mouth.

"Uh, dad?" He whispered. "If you're okay with my decision to sneak out of here, head towards the castle, and assassinate Taffy on my own so that I don't have to lose you like you lost grandpa, say nothing at all."

Mars rolled onto his side, but didn't wake up. Comet took that as his cue. "Great. I'll see you in the morning." He smiled.

With that, the prince hastily made his way out of the sanctuary and used the dark magic in his system to fly off towards Castle Dragonfly. He didn't care if it would taint his soul. He didn't care if he would die. All that mattered to him was killing Taffy and keeping his loved ones safe. The dark red veins spread further up his body until his eyes glowed with the same energy to enhance his vision. What he saw shook him to the bones; Luna was leading a small army of lizard-people in an assault on Castle Dragonfly now that the magic barrier was destroyed.

Clenching his fists, Comet lived up to his name and increased his airborne velocity, ignoring the red veins spreading over the rest of his body. He crashed into three of the lizards so fast, blood splattered everywhere. Unfortunately, their regenerative physiologies meant that they weren't down for long. The deadly trio coiled their tails around the prince's limbs to hold him down before trying to bite into his torso, only for Comet to release a pair of heat beams from his eyes, cutting off their tails and freeing himself. He cracked his knuckles and jumped back onto his feet for the fight.

The Forest of Certain Death, Mewni.

Marcia and her friends stepped through the portal, finding themselves inside a living room filled with croaking baby tadpoles. She recognized this place as the home Comet had built for Yelena the frog monster after she had helped him rescue her. By the time she closed the portal, Yelena entered the living room with a tray of milk bottles.

"What is this?" She fluttered. "What are you doing in my house?!"

"Uh, hi." Marcia waved, sheepishly. "Remember me?"

"Punching girl, yes." Yelena set the tray down and crossed her arms, nodding at something behind the human girl. "Why did you bring Solarians to my house and endanger my babies?"

Marcia turned around to see all five Solarian trainees with their weapons at the ready. Rolling her eyes, she motioned for them to put them down. "Guys, guys, relax. She's a friend."

"Correction; I am Prince Comet's friend." Yelena grunted. "Just because I am no longer serving Luna does not mean I am friendly with Solarians who recklessly wave swords and axes around my babies."

"Look, I'm sorry for barging in like this, Yelena." Marcia spoke softly, but urgently. "But Taffy's possessed Luna and we think Comet's in trouble."

Yelena's brow furrowed in confusion as she leaned closer, as if she hadn't heard Marcia correctly. "Taffy possessed Luna? How is that possible?"

"I-I don't know." Marcia shrugged. "I guess the spell put her in the crystal, and now the crystal's inside Luna's hand- it doesn't matter, okay? She's attacking Mewni, and everyone is in danger! We need to get to Castle Dragonfly and quickly!"

"Get in minivan." Yelena ordered, grabbing her keys.

Ten minutes later, Marcia found herself a passenger of Yelena's van while Jackson and the five Solarian trainees rode in the back with the croaking tadpoles. Yelena slammed on the brakes once they arrived in front of another frog monster's hut and she dropped off her tadpoles before finally heading towards Castle Dragonfly. Suddenly, she jerked the wheel and swerved to avoid a giant lizard-beast that was stampeding out of the forest. A herd of razor-toothed lizard-beasts chased after the minivan with rage in their eyes. The sapient lizard-monsters riding atop the beasts laughed as they threw spears at the van's tires.

Upon seeing the beasts, Harold grinned and unbuckled his seatbelt. As he opened the van door, he drew his mace with a twinkle in his eyes.

"Get to the prince and save him, comrades. These ones are mine!" He declared before jumping out of the van and smashing the beast in the face. "FOR MEWNI!"

"Oh, no, you don't, you daft fool!" Vincent huffed, unbuckling his own seatbelt before jumping after him. "Not without me! FOR MEWNI!"

Franklin sighed. "I need to find better friends." Nevertheless, he also unbuckled his seatbelt and drew his rapier. "FOR MEWNI!"

With the Trio holding off the lizards, Lady Dama shut the van door while Yelena pressed down on the accelerator. Unfortunately, just as the group finally cleared the forest, a stray arrow struck one of the rear tires and forced Yelena to swerve into a ditch.

"Stump dammit!" Kyle cursed as he checked the damage. "How are we going to get to the castle now?!"

As Marcia helped him out of the van, Jackson spotted a squadron of flying manta rays. "I've got an idea." He smiled.

A few seconds later, the group were flying through the air on the backs of the manta rays towards the castle. As they flew, Marcia could see countless other Solarians desperately trying to hold off the invasion from getting too close to the castle walls. Kyle spotted a handful of civilians cornered outside the walls and took a nose-dive towards them. In one fluid motion, he drew his sword, sliced off the lizards' heads, and landed in front of the civilians to defend them. He was quickly joined by Lady Dama while Marcia, Jackson, and Yelena proceeded into the castle.

Suddenly, a blur of dark-red light flew past them. Although her vision was distorted, Marcia recognized the shape as the prince they were looking for. But Comet either didn't see them, or he was too preoccupied with the three lizards he was in the middle of vaporizing with his powers to acknowledge them. Either way, the prince simply flew past them; the sonic boom pushed Marcia, Jackson, and Yelena into the castle.

"Comet!" Marcia got back to her feet and rushed to the hole in the wall. "Comet, it's me! Comet, come back-!"

"WHOA, look out!" Jackson tackled his girlfriend to the floor just as a monster's ax was about to decapitate her.

While the ax was stuck in the wall, Marcia quickly spun on her hands and kicked the enemy monster in the face before helping Jackson to his feet so they could escape. The lizard recovered faster than expected, however, and leapt in front of them. Yelena hastily stole a shield from a nearby suit of armor just in time before the lizard could stab her dagger into Marcia's skull. Likewise, Jackson grabbed a flail and used it to slash the monster's face so Marcia could kick her away.

The group continued through the halls until they came upon the grand foyer. Another lizard with dreadlock-scales spotted them and rushed forward with her daggers ready. But before she could attack, someone stabbed a spear through her from behind and flung her across the room. It was Queen Lake Dragonfly.

"Marcia?" She gawked. "What're you doing here?"

Before Marcia could answer, the monster tackled the queen and pinned her against the nearest wall. Lake managed to use her spear to keep the monster's jaws from closing around her head, but both of the lizard's hands were still free to punch her in the face. Yelena used her shield to push the lizard off of the queen, at the cost of the spear. Using her tail to coil around Yelena's throat, the enemy lizard flung the frog monster aside to focus on Lake, Marcia, and the blood from her lip, Lake got down into a boxing stance.

"Uh, Queen Lake?" Marcia piped up in a concerned tone.

The lizard grinned, sheathed her daggers, and mimicked her stance. The lizard rushed at the queen, but missed her first punch as Lake expertly ducked and rose up to deliver a swift uppercut. Marcia and Jackson watched in amazement as the queen not only held her own against the monster, but actually landed several crushing blows to her opponent's face. Marcia's eyes briefly glanced over to the wall where she spotted a framed newspaper article from ten years ago.

"'Johansen Family Boxing Champion?!'" Marcia smiled as she looked back to cheer the queen on. "Give her hell, your majesty!"

Lake flashed Marcia a friendly smirk before dodging another blow from the lizard in front of her. The lizard-woman was actually foaming at the mouth from rage as she tried to kill the queen. But Lake's fists began moving so quickly that the friction set her knuckles ablaze, adding more damage to her punches. Marcia's jaw fell open as Lake delivered one final blow that launched her opponent through the wall and flying through the sky.

"Holy shit! That was awesome!" Marcia cheered as she ran towards the queen. "How'd you do that?!"

Lake blew out the flames remaining on her knuckles and allowed a cocky grin. "It's called 'Johansen-Style.'" She explained. "A technique that focuses on striking with speed."

Suddenly, a sickly green energy burned a hole through the gate and Luna levitated into the foyer. With a wave of her hand, the possessed kappa pinned Marcia, Jackson, and Yelena to the floor while she choked Lake with her free hand. The queen tried to punch her way out, but the magic Taffy was using to possess Luna proved too powerful for blunt force to overcome alone.

"Your son." Luna snarled. "Where is he hiding?"

"Go to hell." Lake choked out.

"WHERE IS THE PRINCE?!"

As if to immediately answer her question, a sonic boomed echoed in the distance, drawing everyone's attention. In an eyeblink, Comet Dragonfly swooped in and grabbed Luna away from Lake and the others. The queen fell to the ground, coughing and spluttering to catch her breath as Marcia and the solarians ran to check on her.

As she helped the queen back on her feet, Marcia looked on. "Comet?"

Comet screamed in righteous fury as he dragged the Taffy-possessed kappa through the air. Maintaining his speed, he slammed her into the ground, dragging her up stone mountains and punching her in the face.

"YOU THINK! YOU CAN COME! AND THREATEN! MY MOTHER?!" He bellowed with each blow.

Suddenly, Luna's eyes blasted dual beams of green energy, burning the flesh of the prince attacking her. Comet lost his grip on Luna and they both spiraled out of the sky, landing in a cornfield outside the Dragonfly castle. Luna groggily stood up, her glowing green eyes locked onto the spreading red veins on Comet's arms. A vile grin spread over the kappa's beak as she magically summoned her legion of lizards to her side.

"Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha…" Taffy's sinister voice chuckled as an echo along with Luna's, sending a small chill down the prince's spine. "Well, your highness? What are you waiting for? I butchered your grandfather, seized your castle, threw your citizens into madness, and even forced you to destroy the only treasure your family has ever valued. Have you not come to take your revenge?"

"I came to seek justice." Comet growled as his cheek marks shone brightly. "But I'll settle for revenge."

An explosion of Dark Magic wiped out ten lizards, instantly, as Comet charged towards Taffy. The prince's entire body was engulfed with the dark red magic as he targeted the lizards' hearts and brains, trying to completely vaporize them to ensure that none of them got back up. But his primary focus was getting to Taffy. He managed to break away from the lizards holding onto him and grabbed Luna's body before blasting back into the sky. As they flew, Taffy used her magic to course-correct their flight path back into the castle.

At that very moment, Mars had long since woken up to find his son missing and rushed after him. He found his wife stumbling off of the drawbridge - being aided by Marcia and Jackson with Yelena close behind - and ran to help her. "Lake! Are you alright?!"

"Mars Bar!" Lake hugged her husband. "Thank Stump you're alright! Where's Comet?!"

"I-I don't know!" Mars stammered. "I thought he came to save you!"

Suddenly, Comet and Luna landed directly in front of the group. The prince's legs held Luna in a chokehold while he struggled to hold onto her right arm.

"I'm not… going to… let you hurt… anyone else!" Comet grunted as he pried Luna's fingers open to get a clear view of the crystal in her palm. He leaned in close, still struggling to keep Luna pinned, and whispered the spell. "Break the bond… tear the fabric… cleave the stone… stop the magic."

"Comet!"

The prince looked up to see his family and friends. Mars and Lake, Kyle and Dama, the Solarian Trio, Yelena, Jackson, and most importantly, Marcia. The human girl could only stare with wide eyes; she didn't fully understand what he was doing, but she knew it was serious. As Comet felt the Dark Magic in his veins mixing with the corrupted Light Magic of the fractured crystal, all he could do was sadly smile at his best friend.

"Bye, Marcia. And thanks for everythi-"

The crystal embedded within the kappa's flesh exploded in a flash of sickly green light. Comet and Luna's forms were drawn inside of the crystal, and another shadowy figure took their place. Once the light died down, Taffy's entire body - including her missing finger - materialized.

"What was that?" Jackson asked.

"Where's Comet?!" Marcia demanded.

Taffy turned her palm towards the group, showing off the blackened crystal before crushing it in her grip. "He's gone." She remarked, plainly.

Lake cupped her hands over her mouth, tears welling in her eyes as the shock was quickly replaced by despair and grief. Yelena could only stare in disbelief; she had thought of Comet as the first real friend she'd ever made. And to think that he was dead filled her with remorse. Jackson was more shocked than anything else; he wasn't as close to the prince as the others, but he still regarded Comet as a friend. As for the king, his own tears rolled down the purple diamond-shaped marks on his cheeks before the Dark Magic spread further down his wrists.

He rushed towards the monster who had taken more from his family and attacked with all his might. But while age had slowed Mars down, Taffy's immortality kept her in her prime, and she easily dodged all of his attacks. Mars drew the scepter from his belt and angrily held the crystal over Taffy's heart, prepared to do what he should have done years ago.

"I call the darkness unto me, from deepest depths of earth and sea! From ancient evils unawoken, break the one who can't be broken! To blackest night, I pledge my soul, and crush my heart to burning coal! To summon forth a deathly power, to see my hated foe devoured!"

Taffy lazily looked down at the scepter pressed against her chest. No magic shone from the fractured crystal. No spell shot forth to destroy Taffy. With trembling hands, Mars looked down at the broken wand, letting his tears fall upon the cleaved crystal. Taffy's tail smacked him in the face, sending him to the ground where the blacked remains of the crystal's other half were.

"The reign of the Dragonflies is over, your majesty." Taffy remarked, turning her back on the king and his subjects. "Soon, monsters will rule the land once more."

She had succeeded. The magic was gone. The prince was dead. And the age of mewmanity was coming to a close.
