I am sooooooooooooooooo sorry that I had not been posting for almost...three years? YIKES I AM SO SORRY! I had some block on this since the gadgets for Alex stumped me for so long, plus life, work, school, all that fun stuff.
So here is the next chapter of Britain meet Beverly Hills
To recap: he had survived a week of his American high school experience as a normal student before he was sucked into a trash can and taken to a secret organization set to protect humankind and has been offered a job. He was currently seated across the chrome desk with Jerry on the other side offering him some tea before they begin their discussion. The smile and joking nature that Jerry had seen in their surveillance of the boy in the school was no longer there as Alex had dropped the facade and shown one of his cards. Jerry watched Alex wait patiently and silently as Jerry sipped his mid-morning tea. Despite the indifference the pair were sharing, Jerry could see how cold MI6 had turned Alex into with distrust of all and self reliance as instinctual behavior. He would hope that working for W.O.O.H.P. will be better for Alex, if he agrees to it that is.
"People are going to be wondering where I went if I'm not back at class soon." Alex voiced after Jerry had finished his tea, implying he would like to get back.
"Of course, but we do have much to discuss."
"I get that you want me to work for you. My question would be; what makes you any different than working for those I've worked for in the past."
"For one, there are no suicide classed missions." Alex raised an eyebrow at the comment, as if that was enough to convince him. "We take care of our agents, besides being paid there are many other benefits available to you. I am aware that MI6 and CIA had just finally paid you for your work with them, and you should be set for the next twenty years, if you use it wisely.
"With us you are offered missions, if you do not want to take it, another agent can. Most missions only take a few days, not months like some in your records. And our mission history has only minor injuries reported, basically a few bumps or bruises."
"Really?"
"Nothing on the scales that you have had to endure, I assure you. Though in that logic you may find the missions boring in comparison." Jerry said in a joking manner but Alex had a cold look on his face that clearly expressed that he was not amused.
"Any other jokes?"
"No, there aren't. We are willing to offer a assortment of benefits if you choose to work with us."
"As I'm sure you are aware, the reason MI6 brought me in was because they needed me for a mission that was on a critical time limit. I just want you to tell me why you dragged me down here, is there a urgent mission you want me for?"
"No, I just wanted you to know what I had to offer before you got too settled where you were."
"What do you mean?"
"I understand that you are currently living with the Pleasure family, and Miss Sabina was once kidnapped for being affiliated with you, correct? Would you want to live on your own rather than keep them in danger by you living there with them?"
"You'd give me my own house?"
"As well as protection for the Pleasures regardless of your cooperation with us."
"Why?"
"You deserve it for all you have done in your work history,"
"Now it just sounds like you're trying to butter up to me before giving me bad news,"
"Well, I was going to offer you a trial period if you consider that as 'bad news',"
"And what does that entail?"
"A no risk assignment to see how you like working for us."
"And what would it be?"
"You would covertly spy on some of our operatives and if it is done successfully we can speak about making your partnership with us official."
"And when would you like me to do this?"
"When you return to school," knowing Alex's confusion, Jerry touched a button on his desk to turn on the projector to show a security picture of Alex sitting at a table with three girls. "You've already met three of our operatives, the ones you will be asked to investigate." Alex was a tad surprised to learn that his acquaintances are spies, though it did explain a few things about their behavior, he could tell they had secrets like him, and their skills were almost on par with his which he was impressed by. "You don't seem all that surprised"
"I may have figured it out eventually if I wanted to."
"Well, at some point we may discuss you partnering up with them if a certain mission requires your skill set," Alex was about to protest the idea of having a partner, or even several partners, but Jerry put a hand up before Alex could speak his mind, "Jones has already informed me on your hesitance on the topic and like I said, it is just a possibility for the future. For the meantime we will most likely send you on mission that one operative can handle, no hidden agendas missions. We can have a debate on partnerships in the future when you are not crunched for time to depart back to school." Alex let out a sigh showing he was willing to let the topic sit on a back burner for the time being. "The reason I am giving this as your first assignment is because I want you to observe the girls so you can understand the caliber we keep our agents at, meaning you can trust them as backup and assistance in the field."
"How long have they worked for you?" Alex asked, not enjoying the thought that they had seen the same horror as him.
"Not exactly as long as you, and I think you would like to know that they chose this profession upon their own will, unlike your case. They had skill sets that we scouted for, and they could have easily turned our offer down, but they are now our top operatives."
"So you spied on them their whole lives? I wouldn't be all that surprised if you watched me, though I would be a little creeped out. I'm sure MI6 did the same thing." The way they had his life on file there couldn't have been a day they hadn't watched him grow up. They probably kept an eye on him on those months when Ian had left him on his own while on missions and Alex had to fend for himself in almost every way.
"Respectively, we act with discretion and treat people like actual people."
"That's something I don't hear often, or ever from agencies whose main objective is suppose to be protecting people."
"We may see threats, but we still remember that they are still humans that can be dealt with like humans."
Alex looked at the freeze frame of him sitting at the lunch table with Clover, Sam, and Alex, thinking they were like him, but still with good spirits unlike him. Maybe he could figure out what made them different from him. Maybe they hadn't the same hardships as him, he will just have to figure that out in time.
"So you expect me to spy on those girls who are also spies, with or without their knowledge?"
"It is also a test of your intelligence reconnaissance skills, so they will be informed when it requires it." Jerry smirked, "Though I would not let you start out without any assistance," he pressed a button and a platform rise out of the desk presenting an array of items, "I do love giving out gadgets to the girls." Jerry rose to stand over the display and beckoned Alex to come closer.
Tentatively Alex stepped forward and saw a few items that reminded him of the tools Smithers would provide him for his missions, except these seem a little more sophisticated and chromated like the rest of the office.
"First necessity, while the girls have their own version, this is designed with you in mind by someone who knows what you like," He held up a flip phone in a chromated black shell, Alex glanced up past Jerry's head to the screen that displayed the details of said phone. He noticed a scanner on the dial pad, dual camera with multi lense among other things that looked vaguely familiar. As he read these, Jerry also listed them off.
"This would be your equivalent of the girls' compowder communication devices, though I think you can appreciate that it does not look like a compact mirror."
"Appreciated, greatly. Who makes the devices for you?" Alex asked as he had a feeling he already knew. Jerry raised an eyebrow with a smirk.
"I see that you recognise some of our tech, yes you've met the creator before, as he also works for MI6 primarily."
"Seriously," Alex was getting tired of this already, "you got Smithers too?"
"He finds what we request of him a 'pleasant challenge' as he says, plus would give him ideas to supply tech for your career."
"So will I get more of what I still have left over?"
"If you would like, we could do that." Another tray appeared with all the equipment Alex was already familiar with from his prior missions. "We do have a few more new gadgets for you to try out, as your current assignment is merely reconnaissance, these are ideal for surveillance." Another tray lowered itself from the ceiling with more chromated tech.
"What are the capsules?" Alex asked as he noticed a few pill capsules sitting on the tray from the ceiling.
"I think using the communicators embedded GPS would be too easy for you, so a friend at Langley provided a newly developed GPS tracker that could be ingested and can remain in the system at most two weeks, so you will give these to the girls and use it to track them. And you will go wherever they do."
"I'll tail them on a mission if necessary?"
"I'll bring you back here if that happens, so you're not following them blindly."
"These tracker have no side effects?"
"None, a teen genius actually made it, and I trust that group working under Langley."
"I don't need to know that there are more people like me out there."
"Why not?" Jerry chuckled, "You could start a nice support group, at least digital pen pal chat rooms."
Alex sighed at the joke and directed his attention back to the unfamiliar gadgets. "What else am I getting?"
Jerry opened a chrome box the size of a contact lense container. "These stick on patches that are designed to match their skin tone so it would be invisible to the eye or touch, they will act as your ears. Both the patch and trackers can be monitored on the wrist attachment that is coordinated with your communicator. There is also micro earphones as an accessory so you don't need headphones to listen in on the girls, plus you can listen to regular music with them, Smithers made sure to upload all of your favorites on the watch." Alex watched as all the trays disappeared and a inconspicuous black satchel dropped out of the ceiling and into his hands. He opened it and found every gadget that had been displayed organised nicely, with more room for school supplies, and a concealed pocket for his gun.
"Anything else I need?" Alex asked, considering the gear provided, he might like the set up at this place. Out of nowhere Jerry threw keys on a chain at him, which he caught.
"The keys to your new house, the address is in your phone, and in the house there is a binder with all the details of the house for some light reading. And one more thing." Jerry smirked.
"What else is there?" Alex asked.
"You're gonna be late for class." He stated and Alex almost left all his internal organs in the office when the floor gave way below him and moments later he was in a utility closet in the school.
"I think he finds too much fun in that, good think Blunt never had that." Alex pondered aloud as he gathered his bearings. "I probably would've killed him if he did." Just as he opened the door, the bell rang and Alex had to sprint down the hall to reach his class.
As he stumbled through the door, the teacher gave him a disappointed look. "Don't let it happen again, Mr. Rider."
"Yes, Sir." Alex acknowledged before slipping into the seat behind Sam. The idea to plant the hearing device on Sam during class popped in his head when he saw that the back of her shirt hung loose against her shoulders. While he did hold hesitance because the girls have been nothing but nice to him for the past week, this was to prove his skills against other spies with equally long mission resumes. And when the girls get mad about the possible betrayal, he can point the blame to Jerry.
While the teacher's back was to them he pulled out the patch for Sam, adjusted it to his finger and touched her right where the neck meets the right shoulder blade. He applied the pressure like he was trying to get her attention. Which worked as she turned around to face him.
"You okay Alex?" She asked concerned.
"My pen died on me, do you have an extra?" He asked and she did have an extra. He watched her for the rest of the class to see if she sensed the patch at all. She didn't make any show of discomfort so that was one down, two to go, then he could probably give them the capsules at lunch.
A/N: I hoped you enjoyed this, let me know, at the moment it is still the only story in the crossover category of Alex Rider and Totally Spies.
