The Princess
"Scott! Scott! Scott!" Stiles shouted, running up to his friend's locker with a huge grin on his face. He skidded to a stop and wrestled a small box out of his pocket, holding it out proudly for Scott's inspection.
Scott quirked an eyebrow and opened the velvet box, revealing a stunning diamond ring. "Thanks man," he smirked, slamming his locker shut, "but I don't swing that way."
"Ha-ha," Stiles laughed dryly. "It's not for you, dumb ass. I found it in my dad's desk drawer this morning."
"Why were you looking through your dad's desk?"
"Unimportant," Stiles brushed the question off as they meandered down the hall. "What is important is that my dad is going to ask your mom to marry him!" He took the ring out of the box, waving it in front of Scott's nose to prove his point, and nearly dropping it in the process. "Shit!"
"Not if you lose the ring you stole, he won't."
"I didn't steal it," Stiles said, stuffing the ring and the box back into his jeans pocket. "I temporarily borrowed it."
Scott rolled his eyes. "Right."
"Ok, how can you be so calm right now?" Stiles accused. "Dude, we're gonna be brothers!"
"Stiles," Scott laughed, straddling his dirt bike and fastening the helmet, "as far as I'm concerned, we've always been brothers. Not much is gonna change."
Ten months and two weeks later, Stiles smirked as he watched Scott pace the hospital waiting room. "Dude, what are you worried about? Nothing's gonna change, remember?"
"Stiles," Scott growled a warning, "Shut. Up."
Stiles choked back a laugh as his best friend turned brother sank into a chair beside him. "How was I supposed to know they'd get pregnant, much less right away? Aren't they kinda old to be starting this whole process over again? And why the hell are they bringing a kid into this mess? They know what's been going on the past few years, yet they still think having a baby is a good idea?"
"Scott, we've been over this, ok?" Stiles groaned, explaining once again what he had explained at least once a month for the past eight months. "Yeah, Mom and Dad are a bit past their prime, and I doubt this was something they planned, but it's happening. Right now, as a matter of fact. And c'mon, with us as older brothers, this kid's gonna be the safest kid in all of Beacon Hills. Probably in the whole world. Who better to watch over it than a true alpha and yours truly?"
"Fine," Scott sighed. "You're right."
"Of course I am. Now quit freaking out, you're making me nervous," he said, snapping open his magazine again and pretending to be interested in something other than the fact that Lydia and Kira were coming their way.
"Stiles," Lydia sighed, "I know you saw us coming when we were still at the other end of the hallway, and if you don't take this coffee that I so generously brought back for you in the next few seconds, then you will be wearing it."
"Geez, take a girl on a few dates and she thinks she owns you," Stiles muttered as he took the coffee she offered.
Lydia grinned as she sat down in the seat beside him, opposite the one Scott occupied. "I do own you. I have since we were twelve."
"Nine."
Lydia's pretty features pulled down into a frown. "What?"
Stiles looked up from where he'd been absentmindedly staring at the lid of his coffee cup. "It's nine, actually. You've basically had complete control of me since we were nine."
A rosy blush bloomed in her cheeks. "Oh," she said softly.
"Yep," Stiles nodded. His heart did a back flip when Lydia reached out to take his free hand in hers, intertwining her fingers with his.
Suddenly, Isaac came barreling down the hallway. "Am I too late? Did I miss it? Is it a boy or a girl?" he gushed, screeching to a stop in front of Scott and Stiles.
"Dude, relax," Scott sighed. "You haven't missed anything yet."
"Yeah," Stiles agreed. "Apparently the miracle of life takes awhile."
"Oh, okay then," Isaac sighed, sinking into a vacant chair.
They were quiet, at least until Kira asked softly, "So… have we heard anything about how it's going?"
Stiles shrugged and Scott squeezed his girlfriend's hand. "Nothing yet. But no news is good news, right?"
"Right."
"Although chances of complications during childbirth significantly increase in women over forty," Lydia said, studying a crack in her nail polish.
Everyone stared. Scott visibly paled.
"What?"
"Honey," Stiles said gently, "I really love that big brilliant brain of yours, but if you could close your beautifully kissable mouth and keep those little tidbits of information to yourself right now, both of us big brothers would really appreciate it."
Lydia bit her bottom lip. "Sorry."
"So," Kira piped up, "I heard Malia's back in town."
Now it was Kira's turn to bite her lip. "I mean, I haven't seen her or anything. It's not like we've hung out or she's called me. I just… heard… Not that I wouldn't talk to her I guess, I mean, she's nice…"
"Babe," Scott said, taking her hand, "we get it."
She smiled sheepishly at Stiles and Lydia, who looked incredibly uncomfortable. They looked toward the entrance to the maternity ward when they heard the double doors open, the leather jacket clad figures striding in hand-in-hand.
"Sourwolf, I've never been so happy to see you," Stiles grinned, jumping up to hug Derek. Braeden took a step back so as not to get roped into the hug too.
Derek rolled his eyes. "Stiles. Get off me before I kill you."
"Yep," Stiles nodded, going back to his seat.
"Anything yet?" Derek asked as they sat down, trying to appear casual, but by the look Braeden was giving him, this was far from the first time he'd brought it up.
"Nothing," Scott told him. "Thanks for coming though, man."
"A new member of the pack is something to celebrate," Derek said, actually cracking a genuine smile. He took Braeden's hand again and she smiled back at him. "We wouldn't miss it."
"Speaking of our former newest member," Scott chuckled, his sensitive hearing already picking up on Liam's voice down the hall, asking for the Stilinski room. Hurried footsteps echoed down the hall and his youngest beta entered with Mason in tow.
"I'm so sorry we're late, but someone had to go in to three different gift stores!" Liam huffed, shooting a glare at Mason.
"How am I supposed to pick an outfit when I don't know if it's a boy or a girl?" Mason fired back.
Stiles frowned. "Why didn't you just get a gender neutral thing? Like yellow, or something?"
"Oh. He did," Liam said. "We've got pink, blue, and yellow."
"Who says girls can't wear blue and boys can't wear pink anyway?" Lydia chimed in.
"Thank you," Mason sighed, and now it was his turn to shoot a glare at Liam. "Someone is stuck in the dark ages. So really, this is your fault."
"Yeah, right. It's your fault."
"It's your fault."
"It's-"
"Guys!" Stiles laughed. "It's fine, you haven't missed anything. We're still waiting. Have a seat and relax. We might be here a while."
Liam and Mason found a few empty chairs and settled in with the rest of the pack. Although the waiting room was near to full now, it was completely quiet as they awaited the arrival of the newest member of their family.
"Boys?"
Both Stiles and Scott jumped to their feet when Mike entered the waiting room hours later. Scott could hear Stiles' heartbeat racing just as fast as his own.
Mike beamed. "You wanna come and meet your sister?"
"It's a her? She? It's a girl?" Stiles sputtered. Melissa and Mike had decided not to find out the sex of the baby, but Scott and Stiles had both admitted more than once they had been hoping for a sister.
"Yep. And she's got a set of lungs on her to rival this one's," the proud father chuckled as he pointed to Lydia.
The banshee smirked. "We'll see about that."
"You two go first," Kira said, giving Scott's cheek a kiss. "We'll be back in a few minutes to meet her."
Nodding, they went to follow Mike, but Scott stopped him before they got too far down the hall. "Is my mom…"
"She's just fine, son. Exhausted, I think, but just fine."
Relief flooded through Scott. "Thanks. For being there for her, I mean. And me. Just… Thanks, Dad."
Mike wasn't sure what to say to that. He never pushed the father thing on Scott. Of course, he had always thought of Scott as a son even before he and Melissa gotten together. To be honest, Mike hated Rafael McCall, with good reason in his opinion, and was very protective of Scott because of it. He loved him like his own. Always had, ever since he was a little kid. To have him call him Dad now, was, well… "It's my honor, Scott."
Scott flashed him a grin before ducking into the hospital room. Stiles was sitting on the edge of the bed, words flying from his mouth faster than Scott could keep up with. He stopped when he noticed Scott though, smiling at his brother. But Scott was solely focused on his mom and the little bundle she held in her arms. He was in awe and, unlike Stiles, completely speechless. It was all he could do to nod when Melissa asked him if he wanted to hold her.
Ever so carefully, Scott scooped up the tiny thing from his mother's arms. The little girl yawned, and he heard her tiny heart beating as fast as a hummingbird's. She felt so new, so innocent, and the weight of it nearly sent him to his knees.
That's when he felt Stiles move to stand beside him, reaching out a hand to stroke her soft cheek and reverently touch her dark curls hidden partially by a pink hat. "What's her name?"
Both boys looked up at their parents and Melissa reached for Mike's hand. He took it and held it tight, nodding down at his wife with pride. She smiled. "Her name is Claudia Rose."
Stiles bit his lower lip and closed his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath as he gazed down at his little sister, so full of love it almost hurt. "It's perfect."
"It's beautiful," Scott agreed. "She's beautiful. You did great, Mom."
"You sure did," Mike said, bending down to kiss her.
"Scott, can I…" Stiles trailed off, looking down at their sister.
"Yeah, of course."
Although they had sworn each other to complete and utter secrecy, both boys had used one of Lydia's old dolls to practice holding and passing a baby back and forth without dropping or otherwise harming said baby. Now, Scott passed Claudia to Stiles with a natural ease, and Stiles took her into his arms with practiced expertise. She settled into his chest and he dropped a kiss on her head. "I love you, Claudia Rose."
"Both your big brothers love you more than you'll ever know," Scott chimed in, cupping his hand around her head and using his thumb to brush over her hair.
"And we're never going to let anything happen to you," Stiles vowed. "Cause there's a lot of scary stuff out there, but luckily for you, you've got two big brothers who have seen and beaten pretty much all of it."
"And we'll always be here for you. Both of us. Whenever you need us, we'll be there."
"We promise."
