The Perfect One: From criminals to chainsaws.
July 2012: Miami, Florida
After his ordeal with Blade, Will worked with SHIELD to track down all vampire fronts, familiars, allies, and actual vampires and after about a month he was confident they managed to track down about 90% of them. The problem was that they blended in with regular humans and knew how to hide. The fronts, allies, and clubs were easy enough to take down with Frost and the elders dead which severely crippled how they could operate. However, when that was done, they slunk back into the shadows to hide and given they looked exactly like humans it was very had to distinguish them from surveillance footage alone. Still, Will, Blade, and the SHIELD teams were able to take down a few thousand in the city with ease the first week or so but they started to get smart after that. And between trying to find them and keeping the fighting from spilling out into the streets for the world to see it wasn't easy. New York was still reeling from the Battle of New York and adding Vampires to that mix would only make things worse. Paranoia and fear would turn into hatred and rage as people would start turning on their neighbors or innocent people if they thought they were vampires.
Hill eventually told him that Fury reactivated the old SHIELD paranormal division that dealt with the vampires years ago, so they weren't alone in this war. And it freed him up for other missions he was needed on and he was kept busy both home and abroad. He tracked down stolen Chitauri weapons and tech that criminals, terrorists, rogue governments or the black market tried to get their hands on. Along with that, he was called to back up a spy mission in North Korea, took down a drug cartel in Nicaragua with ties to terrorist cells, kidnapped a banker working for said terrorist cell and turned him over to SHIELD for questioning, prevented a terrorist attack in Spain, and took down more criminal enterprises. It's what he was good at. Plus, he kept his contacts and ears open for all chatter about groups he was tracking down like the Syndicate. He also was getting whispers from some of Hoyt Volker's old contacts, probably about retaliation for what he did on the island, but he was ready for that. And he began to get some interesting news in Montana about some kind of doomsday cult. All he had at the moment was the name of the leader…Joseph Seed. It was nothing major now but something in his gut told him it would escalate soon.
Suffice to say that Will was kept busy but now was enjoying some relaxation at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami, Florida. Miami in the summertime was the dream of anyone who wanted to relax and enjoy the summer. Sun, beaches, and an amazing nightlife…Miami was the prime destination for those who wanted fun. Granted it wasn't cheap, the plane ticket or lodging but various aspects called to all walks of life. From the expensive restaurants and nightclubs that catered to the celebrity, model and wealthy of the city while the Cuban culture called to those eager to experience a unique culture and amazing food. He got the hookup from Tony for a few days of R&R. And it wasn't just him, Crystal came down from Attilan for this little vacation to spend with her boyfriend. With the communication band she gave him and with Lockjaw, they could spend time whenever they wanted when he wasn't busy with a mission. Crystal got a handle of being on earth quickly. For example, she was enjoying the time in the actual sun with a morning run.
Will was sitting outside on the patio/balcony of the suite putting the morning breakfast room service on the table. It was expensive and a tad bit much, but he was rich now and was with Crystal so why not splurge. He was wearing athletic shorts and a tank top, showing off his defined arms and chest. Moving one last pitcher of orange juice finished setting up breakfast when he heard the electronic click of the front door and in walked Crystal. She was wearing pink running shorts and a black sport's bra with a baseball cap on and earplugs attached to a phone.
"Hey, how was your run?" He asked as she took off her sneakers and walked over to him. She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek but before she could walk away, he pulled her back and hugged her from behind. "Judging by the little sweat you have I'd have to say very good."
"It was but I'm sweaty." She told him only for Will to kiss her and hold her close.
"I'm more than ok with it." He assured her. She smiled fondly at him before giving him one more kiss. "How was your run?"
"Something I never get tired of. I could never do this in Attilan with the guards always following me but here, I'm free. The feeling of the sun and the wind is something that never gets old." Crystal was beyond happy at this point in her life. "I also know something else I never get tired of."
"Me too." Will initiated another kiss and she reciprocated. "So, I have breakfast ready for us or would you prefer to do something else you never get tired of?"
"I'm thinking…" Crystal gave him another kiss before pulling away. "…breakfast first."
"Fair enough." Will joked as the two sat down outside and enjoyed their breakfast. Another thing Crystal loved about being on earth was the food. Not that Will didn't send her back with various bags of earth food to help tide her over and to give to her family and other Inhumans but being on earth made the difference.
The two sat together in a chair as they listened to crashing ocean waves, seagulls cawing and the sweat smell of the ocean. It was the perfect start to the day. "So, what do you want to do today?" Will wondered. "We could head to the beach again although I'm not sure how I feel about the looks you get from pervs who can't keep it in their pants?"
"Why, you worried they'll steal me away from you?" Crystal questioned only for Will to steal a quick kiss. "Well if it makes you feel any better, I don't like the looks you get either."
"All right. Why don't we head into the city and just explore?" He suggested.
"That doesn't sound too bad. Any time I get to spend on earth the better?" Crystal replied. "Every time I go back, I tell Gorgon, Triton, Karnack, Black Bolt and my sister about everything I do, and I can tell they're a little jealous."
"That's understandable, I imagine. The Inhumans of Attilan have been on the moon forever so now you get the chance to come down but not them." Will sighed in sadness. He really wished there was more he could do for the Inhumans on the moon. He always sent her back with a lot of earth food for them, but it wasn't a substitute for being on earth. "Maybe I can work something out so they could visit?"
"What are you thinking?" She questioned.
"I don't know but maybe they can come visit my place for a weekend? They'd be able to experience earth culture a little bit. It could be the steppingstone to something better, maybe?" Will theorized but that was stopped when his phone went off. He checked and saw it was Grant. "Grant, what's up?"
"Hey, Will I need your help." Grant said over the phone and by his tone it was important.
"What's wrong? Is it Daisy or Riley?" Will asked.
"No, not them. It's a friend of mine. He's in trouble."
"What happened?" Will got up from the seat as Crystal was a little concerned about what was going on.
"A friend of mine is being framed for killing five people at PNC park. Ok, I know they're saying he did it and have all this evidence but he's not the killer. I think he's being framed." Grant told him.
Will walked into the room to get his tablet and began looking up the shooting at PNC park. News reports say that a sniper killed five people from a parking garage across the Allegheny river. The police already had the suspect in custody, a retired US army sniper James Barr who the police matched with a fingerprint from a coin dropped into a meter and raid at Barr's house led them to finding the rifle in question. It seemed like a slam dunk case of who done it. "James Barr. Is he a friend of yours?"
"Yeah, we served together. He's a friend and saved my ass more than once. Look, I know what the news is saying about him, but he didn't do it. He's a great guy with a sister who he loves and was about to start a career in the private sector. There is no motive for this. I tried telling the DA, but they won't listen." Grant's tone seemed to indicate he really believed his friend couldn't have done this. "That's why I'm calling you. I know this isn't your usual thing but is there anything you can do to help? The DA here is all but guaranteeing the death penalty unless James confesses but he didn't do this."
"I can't promise anything, but I'll be there soon and look into it." Will told him.
"Thank you."
"Grant…I said I'll do everything I can but I'm not a miracle worker. But I trust you and if he's innocent I'll prove it." He promised before hanging up the phone. He walked back outside to the patio to talk to Crystal. "How do you feel about heading to Pittsburgh?"
"I've never been there so I'm not sure." Crystal responded.
"My friend is in trouble and he needs my help. Come with me. You can meet him, and we'll be able to spend a little more time together before you head back." Will suggested.
"Ok. Let's go." Crystal got up to change and pack. Next stop, Pennsylvania.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Will and Crystal arrived in the city of steel a few hours later and after getting settled into a hotel room they met up with Grant who was at the law office of the person representing Jacob Barr. Will was dressed in his regular clothes and Crystal was wearing earth clothes which consisted of boots, jean shorts, a yellow tank top and a blue and white flannel shirt over that. (1)
They arrived at the law office and were directed to the office of Helen Rodin, Barr's defense attorney. There waiting for them were Will's childhood friends Grant and Daisy, having recovered from their experience on the island along with Barr's sister Diana Barr and the lawyer Helen Rodin.
"Will." Grant rushed over and hugged him, and Will hugged back. The two friends were happy to see one another, they just wished it wasn't like this. Daisy then hugged him as well. "It's good to see you buddy."
"You too. Sorry it had to be like this." Will told them. "This is my girlfriend, Crystal. Crystal, these are my childhood friends Grant Brody and Daisy Lee. Sorry you three had to meet this way."
"It's nice to meet you." Crystal shook their hands. Then Grant introduced him to Helen and Diana.
"Helen, Diana, this is Will Detmer. My friend I told you about." Grant said as Will shook both their hands.
"Grant says that you can help my brother?" Diana asked, showing signs of emotional wreckage with everything that's been happening.
"I'm hoping to." Will replied. "I have experience working these types of cases and have been known to do the impossible. If Grant believes your brother is innocent, then it's enough for me to help."
"Do you have a lot of experience with the law or the police?" Helen asked.
"Sort of. I'm a consultant of sorts. I've worked some very odd cases. Is it possible for me to meet Mr. Barr?" He questioned and Helen was able to set that up but not at the prison or at lockup. Instead it was at the hospital.
Helen led Will, Grant, Daisy, Diana and Crystal to the hospital wing where Barr was being looked after. Two uniformed officers were stationed outside his door, but Helen was able to get them in. Once inside it was a hard sight as James Barr was laying down on a medical bed with a breathing tube shoved down his throat. His face was scarred and bruised indicating he was nearly beaten to death and the only sign he was still alive was the steady beep from the EKG machine.
"Oh my god. What happened to him?" Crystal asked.
"He was attacked in route to the prison." Helen told him.
"Some jag hole uniform officer threw him in with the wolves." Grant said in anger as he and Daisy comforted Diana who was distraught at seeing her brother in this state.
Will walked over to James to get a better look and he was in some bad shape. He did a quick telepathic scan of his mind and he was in a coma, probably from the head trauma of the attack but his brain didn't sustain any damage. He delved a little deeper into his memories and that's when things got weird. If he really did kill those people, then he'd be able to find a memory of it but found nothing of the sort. He saw various memories of him in the army and working with Grant in his unit, his discharge from service, dinners with his sister, drinking at a bar with some friends, getting hit on by a girl, practicing shooting at a gun range with an M-14 sniper rifle. The memories the day before James Barr was arrested was when things got weird. The first part of the memories for that day played out normally but then around the time that James went to the bar for a drink with someone, they began to get fuzzy…like someone drugged him. last clear memory was of him barely making it home to bed and then the police arresting him the next morning.
"Will…" His name brought him out of his memory intrusion. He turned and saw it was Grant. "You ok?"
"I'm fine. Hope you plan on suing that corrections officer for allowing this to happen instead of putting him into protective custody. You'll get a hell of a payday." Will commented.
"I don't care about that. I just want my brother to be ok." Diana said as Will walked over and pat her on the shoulder.
"And he will be once he wakes up. Besides…" He walked over to the door to exit into the hallway. "…he's innocent."
The others looked at him weird as they followed him out into the hallway when Will was stopped by an old white guy in a suit and a black man in a suit. The DA and detective on the case. "Whoa, what the hell were you doing in there? Who are you?"
"He's with me." Helen walked forward. "What are you doing here?"
"What, did you think you can stop by the hospital and I wouldn't know?" the old white guy in the suit told her.
"Who are you?" Will asked.
"This is Detective Calvin Emerson and District Attorney Alex Rodin." Helen introduced the two.
"Alex Rodin?" Will gave her a look.
"Father and Daughter." Detective Emmerson filled him in. "It's a good story."
"I bet a funny story." Will joked.
"Anyway, who are you and what are you doing here?" DA Rodin asked.
"Will Detmer, Helen Rodin's lead investigator." He introduced himself which shocked Helen, Grant, Daisy, Diana, Crystal, the DA and detective. "She's asked me to help her with this case and I agreed."
"You agreed to help protect a mass murderer?" DA Rodin asked.
"No, I agreed to help prove that he's being framed by the mass murderer. Now, unless the detective plans to arrest me for doing my job then we're done here." Will said as Crystal took his hand. "Don't worry, Diana. I'll do everything I can to help your brother. I'll prove who's really behind this."
She smiled at him as Will and Crystal walked down the hall when he stopped. "By the way, Ms. Rodin. As your lead investigator, I'd recommend that you ask for a copy of James Barr's physical evaluation and bloodwork personally from the doctor. I have a gut feeling that you might find something interesting…if someone hasn't coerced the doctor into keeping it off the official record. Come find me when you're done."
Will walked down the hall with Crystal by his side while the others just looked at him weird. Grant and Daisy stayed with Diana while Helen went to do what he suggested. Crystal looked and saw the smirk on Will's face. "You had fun there. You know something."
"That I do. This is going to be interesting." Will told her as they decided to head to a nearby diner for a quick snack.
They got some coffee and waited for their food. Crystal had been so-so with coffee when she was first introduced to it but now, she loved it. "So, Will what's really going on? How are you so sure that James Barr is innocent?"
"I read his mind. He's in a coma but his brain is still in good health and I went through his memories. Granted, it's something I'm not comfortable doing without permission but these are extenuating circumstances. There's no memory of the shooting. No planning, set up, or even the action. If he suddenly developed retrograde amnesia after the shooting or from the assault, I would have found it. What I did find are fuzzy and incomplete memories the night before the shooting until he was arrested. The only reason that would happen is if suddenly James Barr is a telepath which he isn't…or someone drugged him to use as a patsy. Someone who knew him well enough." Will explained.
"So, someone is framing him for the shooting but why?" Crystal was no expert in things like this, but it felt like there was a piece missing.
"I don't know. I'm missing some pieces of the story but once I find it it'll all make sense. In all my work I've learned a few things. There are only a few reasons to kill: love, money, terrorism, politics, or to cover up a crime. With something like this, my guess is that whoever did this was looking for a patsy to take the fall for killing those five people. That's where I need to start." Will told her as their food arrived. A turkey club for him and a tuna sandwich for her.
"I have to admit, this is interesting. It's like those crime shows we watch." Crystal said.
"True and I'm gonna make sure this one has the same happy ending." He assured her when he noticed Grant, Daisy, and Diana make their way over. "Hey, guys."
"Will, what the hell was that?" Grant asked.
"What was what?" Will questioned.
"You know what I mean? When I called you, you were hesitant to do this, now you're signing up to be the lead investigator on the case? What happened?" Grant asked only for Will to sip his soda.
"I wasn't hesitant to take the case, I told you that I would do what I could to prove if he was innocent. And after seeing what I saw, I'm more confident that he's innocent." Will told him as he ate a French Fry. He had to play unsure at the moment because he couldn't tell his friends that he read James Barr's mind to figure out the truth. "You guys should order something."
"Will, what's going on? How do you know James is innocent? You don't even know him." Daisy said.
"True but actions speak louder than words and his condition in the hospital is a pretty big action. The fact that he's like that gives me a reason to think he's innocent and being framed."
"You think because my brother was attacked that he's innocent?" Diana Barr asked.
"I think because he was attacked and put into a coma that I can say for certain that he's innocent. That along with meeting you and Grant vouching for him. I trust Grant with my life and if he says that your brother didn't do this then I believe him. And I promise that I'll get to the bottom of whoever framed your brother." Will swore.
"Why would someone frame James for that shooting?" Daisy asked.
"That's what I'm going to figure out." He told her as he wiped his mouth with a napkin. "In my line of work, I've learned a few things and I can say for certain that all crimes have a reason for happening. No matter how twisted or perverse, there is a logic. Now, from what Grant and you have told me about James, he's not mentally compromised or distressed which means this wasn't an act of outrage or call for help. This was murder for a reason. All I have to do is find out that reason and we'll find out who framed James."
"You really think someone framed my brother for the killing of five innocent people for what?" Diana asked.
"Well, that's what we're going to find out. What can you tell me about James?" Will asked, sipping his soda. "I need to know everything about him. Recently, at least. The past couple of years."
"Um, I'm not sure what to say. Our parents died about 8 years ago, so it's just been the two of us. James was older so he always looked out for me, even when we were little. He worked part-time during high school when my parents were struggling to help put food on the table and so that I could focus on school and go to college. Even when he was deployed, he put everything he had into a savings account for me." Diana told him causing Will to smile.
"Sounds like the best brother in the world and not someone capable of doing what happened." He assured her. "Grant, what was he like in the army?"
"James and I went through basic training together. He was the life of the party when he wanted but could be serious when needed." Grant told him.
"An all-around good guy." Will said and Grant nodded.
"Exactly. We had some fun times. James joined the army partially because he wanted to serve, and he didn't have a lot of prospective outcomes. We went through basic training together and eventually he joined the sniper school while I stayed in the infantry. When we were deployed overseas to Iraq and Afghanistan, we made it into the same platoon. He provided overwatch and sniper cover while we did our missions." Grant explained.
"How good of a sniper was he?"
"Well, he wasn't Hawkeye, but he was pretty good. Saved our squad's ass on one occasion when we were taking heavy fire. Our platoon was hit by an IED and were ambushed on the streets one day. We were surrounded and pinned down, taking fire from all sides with guys in the buildings all around us. James and his spotter helped us survive. He was no Chris Kyle, but he was someone dependable to watch your back." Grant told him. "All the chaos and craziness we went through over there changed a lot of guys I know but not James. He stayed rock solid the entire time and even talked guys off the ledge. Eventually our service was up, and we made our way back to the states."
"Good to know." Will said when he saw Helen Rodin walk into the diner. "Ms. Rodin, did you get his file?"
"I did but nothing I don't already know." She handed it to him so he could look it over. "Aside from the physical trauma, his body showed trace amounts of a whole bunch of drugs in his system. Pain killers, amphetamines, mood stabilizers. A lot of bad things."
"My brother would never take drugs." Diana told her.
"More like someone gave James something the night before the shooting to make this crazed shooter story more plausible." Will pointed out.
"That someone being the person you say is framing James Barr." Helen Rodin said. "You seem pretty sure that James is being framed for this and you only just met him."
Will looked over the rest of the file to find anything out of the ordinary. "Is there a question in there, Ms. Rodin?"
"I'm just curious as to how a 20-something young man from New Jersey is so confident in his belief while everyone else thinks the same." She commented. "I did some quick digging into you when I went to get the file. There's not a lot about you."
"Well, I keep my nose clean. When you have a cop for a dad you make it a habit." Will put the file down and sipped his soda.
"So, what's next?" She wondered.
"Well, tomorrow I'm going to the crime scene with a pair of fresh eyes. As for you, Ms. Rodin, I need to know everything about the victims, and I mean everything. Be objective as you possibly can." Will told her.
"You can't be serious." She thought he was joking but he was dead serious.
"If you want my help and you want to prove that James Barr is innocent then I need everything I can about what happened and that includes the victims." He said. "I never said it was going to be easy but if my hunch is right then we'll find the real killer."
"And if your hunch is wrong?" She asked.
"Well, then you go back to where you were before."
Line Break xxxxx
After Helen agreed to Will's idea, she spent the next day interviewing the families of the victims of the shooting. At least the families that would talk to her and that wasn't easy for them or for her. Will spent his time going over the shooting by reviewing evidence and visiting PNC park where it happened. Grant and Daisy stayed with Diana and helped however they could but there wasn't much they could do. Crystal would have helped but Medusa called her back to Attilan. There was a Terrigenesis ceremony she needed to attended which stopped their vacation but that was fine.
Will looked over all the evidence from the shooting including eyewitness accounts, coroner details, and police reports on everything. A total of five victims from six shots fired across the river from the third floor of a parking garage. Based on the caliber and shell casings, it was an M-14 sniper rifle. Which happened to be the same kind that James Barr used in the army and had registered. Judging by the placement of the victims' bodies, the time of day, and what eyewitness accounts said happened…it wasn't a novice shooter. Definitely not some lone nut, this was someone with sniper training at the very least. With the victims spaced out over a wide area, this took skill. He took pictures with his phone before moving to the parking garage and found the sniper's perch. The powder burns and marking from where the rifle was placed. While in theory this attack could be possible, knowing what he knows about James some things weren't adding up. First things first was the quarter put in the parking meter. If James really did commit this then he wouldn't have done that as it gave the prosecution one of their greatest pieces of evidence but if you were framing him then that's another story. Not too hard to pull someone's prints off them when they're drugged to make a latex replicates. That's when he noticed the sun glare he was getting from the sun's reflection on the adjacent building next to the park where one of the victim's was found. That glare alone made the sniping ten times harder so a true marksman would have found a different vantage point. Somethings about this definitely smelled funny and he was going to get to the bottom of this.
After checking out the scene of the crime, he went to the police station where Detective Emerson let him look over the evidence from the crime scene including the rifle, coin, bullet casings, and the bullet they recovered from the scene. Of course, he was being watched the entire time by Detective Emerson but there wasn't anything new he could find there. The reports said that the casings match Barr's rifle and the gun had been fired but if he was set up and drugged, someone could have taken his gun and used it before placing it back so the police could take it when they raided his home.
After his day of investigation, he ended it at a pub to get some food and a drink. Daisy and Grant met him there and the place was popular which is why they figured Will chose the place but in actuality it was the place James Barr went to the night before the shooting. He was hoping to dig up some clues but got nothing. The bartender wasn't very helpful but did say that James was with a friend that night but couldn't give a very good description. Just a tall, white man with a buzzcut, not very helpful. A bunch of people show up every night so he couldn't remember one face and Barr's memories were still fuzzy for Will to get a clear image with a mind read. He, Daisy, and Grant ate dinner and he paid for it when it was over. Daisy went to the bathroom and Grant was making his way to the bar to get another drink, leaving Will at the booth with his thoughts. He looked at Grant at the bar getting his drink and noticed some guy arguing with a girl and she was both upset and angry at him. A possible lover's spat.
Will sat in his seat, going over all the evidence from his day of investigation and there were some discrepancies. Hopefully with the information that Helen Rodin could get then things would finally make sense. He sipped his beer when someone sat down across from him and it was the girl who was having that lover's spat with the guy. She was dressed up in boots, jean shorts, a flannel shirt tied up over his stomach and a black leather jacket. Obviously dressed up to party and have a good time.
"Mind if I share your table?" She asked and he shrugged. "I'm Sandy."
"So was I." Will replied causing her to look at him funny. "Two days ago, on a beach in Miami."
"So, then what brought you all the way up to Pittsburgh?" She wondered.
"Just helping a friend."
"What's your name?" Sandy asked as Will thought for a moment before deciding on his answer.
"Oliver Queen." He told her which caught her off guard. It wasn't a noticeable reaction to a normal person, and she played it off, but he could tell that's not what she was expecting to hear.
"Really? You don't look like an Oliver." She told him.
"What do I look like?"
"I don't know but not an Oliver." She said. "It's kind of loud in here. Do you maybe wanna go someplace quieter? I have a car."
Will finished his beer as he did a quick mind read and realized why she approached him. Time to spring the trap. "I'm sorry, Sandy but I'm a bit strapped for cash and I have a girlfriend. And no offense but my parents raised me better."
"Excuse me?"
"I can't afford you." Will said and Sandy look offended.
"I'm not a hooker."
"Oh, then I really can't afford you." He joked.
"Seriously, I work at the auto parts store." Sandy told him.
"What I mean is, the cheapest woman tends to be the one you pay for." Will replied, making the joke. Normally he would never do this, but this time was for a reason and to get the reaction he wanted out of her which was her standing up in a huff.
"I'm not a hooker!"
"That's true. A hooker would get the joke." Will muttered as a guy walked over to her.
"What's this?"
"He called me a whore." Sandy told him and Will saw it was the guy she was arguing with before. Daisy had come out of the bathroom and was walking over when she saw what was going on and moved to the bar to get Grant.
"Is that true?" The leader, Jeb asked as four of his friends walked over. Daisy had made her way over to Grant and pointed over at the table. He would have rushed over, but Will shook his head to not get involved.
"Well, nobody actually said whore. She inferred hooker, but I meant loose." He joked.
"Hey, that's our sister." One of the dudes said.
"Yeah like anyone believes that." Will muttered.
"Hey, asshole. Outside." Jeb told him.
"You're gonna want to pay your tab, first." Will told him.
"I'll pay later."
"You're not gonna be able to." He warned him.
"You think?"
"All the time. You should try it. That's why we have brains." Will said.
"Funny joke but I'm gonna beat your ass. Do you wanna do that here or outside?" Jeb asked as Will gave it some thought.
"Eh, let's do it outside. No need to ruin the place. Besides, I could do with some exercise." He said, standing up and grabbing his jacket. He walked out of the bar with the five guys and Sandy while Grant and Daisy quickly followed him. Will subtly removed his HK pistol and SHIELD badge before placing them inside his jacket which he gave to Daisy to hold.
"Will, what the hell is going on?" Grant asked.
"Don't worry. All a part of the plan." He assured him as he stood in the street close to the cars and the sidewalk.
"You still think you're funny now, asshole!" Sandy shouted.
"Shut your mouth, Sandy! No one is talking to you!" Jed told her.
"Hey, there's no reason to get upset at her." Will told him.
"Really, you insult her and now you'll come to her rescue?"
"Well, she's not the problem. After all, you told her to talk to me." Will said, getting the intended reaction of out him that he wanted which was shock. "I saw you two talking at the bar and knew that you and your goon squad would come over soon enough. I just pushed her in the right direction because I want to talk to you. Who do you work for?"
"What makes you think I'm working for anyone?" Jeb asked.
"I'm gonna give you one chance to tell me before this ends badly for you." Will warned him causing Jeb and his friends to laugh.
"Are you kidding? It's five against one."
"Last warning before this gets ugly and I have to force you to tell me. Who do you work for?" He asked but all Jeb did was get into a fighting stance. "Ugh…fine. But just remember…I asked nicely."
Jeb smirked before throwing out a right hook that missed as Will ducked and deliver an elbow to his face. He would have fallen to the ground, but Will grabbed him by the back of his jacket and hoisted him up. Sandy and Jeb's friends weren't expecting that at all, and it all happened so quickly but Daisy and Grant knew Will was going to be fine.
"Like I said, I asked nicely." Will remarked before delivering a knee to Jeb's crouch that caused him to shout in pain before falling to the ground. He likely wouldn't be having female companionship for a long time. One of Jeb's friends charged and threw out a right cross that he blocked with ease before throwing him headfirst into one of his buddies who tried to attack him from behind. The third charged but Will punched him in the ribcage, tossed him over his hip and slugged him across the face. The fourth guy threw out a kick that Will caught before delivering a gut punch to the stomach and threw to the ground. The two guys who were still conscious nodded to one another before getting ready to fight so he decided to send a message by stomping on the fourth guy's leg and breaking his kneecap causing him to shout in pain before Will kicked him across the face and knocked him unconscious.
Two police cars soon arrived out of nowhere causing Jeb's two friends to run away. Will gave one more look at Sandy before she ran too.
"Get on the ground!" One of the cops shouted.
"Pretty impressive response time, fellas. Wonder if you're that good with all crime." Will remarked.
"Do it!"
Will was happy to oblige as he laid down on the ground and put his hands behind him. One of the cops came over and cuffed him before searching his pockets. He looked over at Grant who was about to get Will's badge but shook his head no. Daisy slid his badge into her pocket while Grant quickly and subtly hid Will's gun in his jacket. Will then looked over a Jeb who was holding his privates in pain. "Like I said, I gave you the chance. You just unleashed a world of hurt."
He was put in the back of the cop car and taken to the police station where he was put into central holding while Jeb and his friends were taken to the hospital. Daisy and Grant called Helen and she met them at the station where Detective Emerson led them to the holding area. They saw Will sitting against the wall with his eyes closed, looking like he was taking a nap.
"Evening, Helen. Detective Emerson." Will said with his eyes still closed. "So, anybody dead?"
"And if they were?" Emerson wondered.
"Well, then it's going to be complicated as they attacked me but they're not dead. I was being gentle." Will remarked before opening his eyes with a smile. "You want to charge me?"
"Very much so." Emerson commented.
"But no one's pressing charges. Wasn't too hard to figure out why especially considering how those cops just happened to show up out of nowhere." He joked only for Emerson to keep his glare before turning to leave. "Oh, and by the way, Emerson…inform the officers who arrested me that I'm not vindictive so they have nothing to worry about. Unless they're involved and if that's the case then they won't be cops for much longer."
"Are you threating police officers, Mr. Detmer?" Emerson asked.
"No, only those involved. As the son of a police captain, I've got zero tolerance for traitors who don't deserve the badge." He warned as Emerson just left. "He's just a cheery individual, isn't he?"
"Do you know how bad this is for us? You're my investigator, you work for me which means everything you do reflects me and my firm." Helen scolded him.
"I was set up." Will told her.
"You're talking to a lawyer." She reminded him.
"And I'm a cop's son, I know a set up when I see one. The girl who approached me at the bar, she and her thugs started the fight." Will told her.
"Yeah, which never happens at a bar." Grant said sarcastically.
"And she was thrown when I told her my name was Oliver Queen."
"Who's Oliver Queen?" Helen asked.
"An alias I've used on undercover work. My preferred alias. Billionaire playboy who dabbles in the not-so legal part of the world to fund his globetrotting adventures. Daisy, show her my badge." Daisy pulled it out of her pocket and showed it to Helen and to say she was shocked was an understatement. It made Will chuckle. "You'll understand now why you've haven't found a lot on me."
"Why didn't you tell me you were a SHIELD agent?" Helen asked.
"Because it's not something I'm really supposed to advertise unless it's necessary. And I don't feel that flashing my badge on a pro bono case for my friend was necessary. Besides, I don't need the headache of headquarters asking what I'm doing here." Will told her.
"Then why not tell Emmerson and avoid being locked up?" Daisy added.
"I needed a nap." Will remarked causing Daisy and Grant to look at him funny. "And I don't need to tip the hand of whoever's involved in this."
"Involved in what? You make this sound like a grand conspiracy. It's a simple shooting case." Helen told him.
"I don't think so. The girl who hit on me at the bar, she was talking to the idiot who started that fight. And she wasn't expecting me to tell her a fake name, she was expecting to hear Will Detmer which means she knew who I was. Then those idiots arrived claiming to be her brothers and then those two cop cars showed up just as the fight started. No, that was a set up. Someone wants me to back off." Will told her, drawing a look from Helen that pretty much said you're crazy. "And add this to that as well. Someone in a Cadillac was following me all day when I was checking out the crime scene."
Will was released and signed some papers at the front desk before the desk sergeant returned his phone, wallet, and house keys. "If someone followed you at the river today it was probably a cop." Helen suggested.
"There are three things my dad told me about cops: They don't vote democrat; they don't drive Cadillac's and they never use personal vehicles." Will said looking at the desk sergeant who nodded in agreement. He grabbed his stuff as they walked out of the police station. "It wasn't a cop."
"Maybe it was a PI then or someone from the DA's office." Helen said.
"You really think your father would have someone following me and try to set me up?" Will asked.
"Why would anyone set you up?" Helen wondered.
"Because I'm getting close to something. How'd did your day go?"
"About as much as you probably expected." She told him as they left the police station and went to the hotel room that Will was using for his stay. When they got there, Helen told him everything she managed to find on the victims of the shooting.
"Chrissie Farrior was 22. A nanny caring for the six-year-old daughter of family friends. She'd finally saved enough money for a trip to China, in fact, she should have left the week before. But the girl she cared for wanted Chrissie to stay for her 7th birthday. They'd gone downtown that day to shop for a party dress. Rita Coronado worked as a cleaning lady at the River Cross Plaza. She was usually late for work, but she had a good reason. Since her son Marco was nine years old, she had to personally drop him at school to make sure he actually went. But her dedication had paid off. Marco was now an honor student. As a reward for all his hard work, Rita was taking him to his first baseball game. And she was on her way to pick up the tickets that afternoon. Nancy Holt's last words to her husband were a lie. She told him she was taking her car to be serviced, but in fact she was headed downtown. She told the clerk she didn't want the purchase showing up on her credit card. She wanted to surprise her husband for their 10th anniversary just a few days away. Oline Archer never liked her husband's construction business, even after helping him become one of the largest contractors in the county. So, it came as a relief when his failing health and a costly lawsuit were forcing them to sell to the competition. Her husband had given his life for the company but now that it was hers, she couldn't bring herself to let it go. She was on her way to secure a loan that day so she could keep the business she always hated. Darren Sawyer was an investment broker in the same building Rita worked. His wife said he'd grown increasingly distant of late. She can't remember their last words to one another, but they weren't kind. Darren's body was found beside a fresh bouquet of roses he'd bought that morning, and his wife takes comfort in the fact that, in his last moments, he was most likely thinking of her." Helen explained as Will walked over to the fridge in his room and handed them all a beer. "They were five innocent people murdered at random, so I don't know what you were hoping to find out but there's nothing there."
"You seem pretty sure about that." Will commented.
"What else is there? The victims didn't know each other or James so there's nothing." Helen told him. She seemed defeated and Grant and Daisy were a little worried, but Will wasn't.
"Do any of you know how many people die in this country every year?" He asked and they just looked at him. "Two and a half million. Which means on average, roughly 7,000 Americans wake up for the last time every single day. And five people just happened to be together at the park when the shooting happened."
"Exactly, random." Helen said again.
"Not all. Darren and Nancy, those two were having an affair." Will said, getting odd looks from the others. "You don't buy flowers for your wife on the way to work, you buy them on the way home. And you don't worry about charges showing up on your credit card when your anniversary is that weekend. It's why she kept walking when he was shot. To see for herself."
"You can't exactly prove that." Daisy commented.
"Wouldn't be too hard. E-mails, phone records. It'd be easy to prove but no reason too. Let their families think what they want. And Rita wasn't random as well. She worked at the plaza next to the stadium and was a convenient target. Chrissie as well which leaves us with our actual target, Oline Archer." Will stated. "It wasn't a mass shooting, it's a conspiracy to kill four random people and one target."
"And you're basing this theory on what exactly?" Helen wondered.
"Likely probability and the discrepancies in the case." Will told her. "If we're to believe everything the police say about James, that he killed these people because he's insane and has no real motive then how do you prove that? You prove that by the evidence you gather, and that evidence was the shooting. From that garage, the sniper has a massive sun glare in his face and his targets are moving quickly left to right. Those conditions alone make the job a hundred times harder. If James is actually the killer, he wouldn't have done it that way."
"How could you possibly know this?" Helen asked.
"Grant, what does army training do to the average person?" Will asked him.
"Discipline. Skills become muscle memory and you do without thinking." Grant answered.
"And it also makes them better than the average person because it beats tactical awareness into him. Even more so for snipers. Snipers are taught to pick their perches carefully in a way that best benefits them and not only that, but their training makes them highly disciplined. If James or any actual army sniper actually did this, they wouldn't have done it at the parking garage unless they wanted to get caught. The better vantage point would have been on the highway bridge above the water. Perfect vantage point, the sun behind you and you'd never have to get out of your car. No trace evidence and no way you'd be caught. That's how it should have happened if we're to believe that James actually did this, but he didn't."
"That just seems like you are grasping for straws." Helen commented.
"Maybe but then add it with everything else we know. All that evidence conveniently laid out for the police to find. One piece or two, I'd buy but all of it? The stray brass, bullet casing, fingerprints, and why the hell would you actually put a coin in a parking meter unless you wanted to get caught if you were just going to be there for less than five minutes? And why would you even think to look in the parking meter for the coin in the first place? Not only that but there's the prosecutions greatest piece of evidence. One single bullet conveniently trapped in liquid backstop which ties James's gun directly to the kill…setting him up for the crime."
"How would they do that?" Helen asked yet again.
"You read his medical reports. All those drugs in his system. Someone wanted him out of commission long enough to do whatever they needed to do to set up James as their patsy for this. Have a drink with him at a bar, slip him something to put him under and keep him that way. He wouldn't be able to tell them what happened and even if he could, all the drugs in his system only help the prosecution even more. Which means our real shooter is someone who knew him and seen his skills well enough that it would make it seem possible that he could have done this. Our shooter was someone who knew him."
Helen honestly wasn't following any of this but decided to follow along to entertain the idea. "Ok, but you have no way to even prove any of that if it's even a possibility."
"Then I'll get the proof." Will told her as he sipped his beer.

The next morning, Grant was driving Will around in a rental car. He wanted to talk to the Sandy girl who came up to him at the bar. She could give him some information on Jeb and who hired him. Once he got that, he'd be a step closer to getting the names of the people behind this. He wanted Helen to look into Oline Archer but as a defense attorney that wasn't her job and she honestly didn't believe his crazy theory. He was looking forward to proving her wrong.
"Why am I driving you to an auto parts store? What do you possibly hope to get out of her?" Grant wondered, making a right turn at an intersection.
"Not so much her, but the guy who put her up to it. He came at me because someone told him to. I find out who then I'm a step closer to finding the person behind all this and freeing your friend." Will told him.
"Thanks again for doing this, man. I imagine you SHIELD guys must have your hands full these days with aliens and whatnot." Grant commented.
"Well, I earned a few days off from my last mission, so I wasn't busy. And don't ever worry about that. If you or the others ever need me just let me know and I'll be there." Will said and Grant nodded. "How's Riley?"
"He's all right. He got hired full time with Boeing and he's thinking of getting his pilot license." Grant told him.
"Seriously? Good for Riley. How about you and Daisy? Things ok?" Will wondered.
"Yeah, still ok. Daisy's still coaching swimming at NYU. They still have all her medals up there." Grant said. "And private security isn't bad but the guys they have us protect are total tool bags. Think those elitist snobs from NYU only ten times worse with triple the ego."
"Geez, that sucks. Hey, if you're ever looking for a change of work, I know Stark Industries could use some former military guys for their security department. I mean, handling security for a billion-dollar tech empire has to be better than babysitting a primadonna reeking of cologne." Will reached into his wallet and took out Happy's business card. "Here, give this guy a call and tell him I vouch for you."
"Happy Hogan. Iron Man's bodyguard?" Grant asked.
"Not anymore. Last I checked, he's chief of security for all of Stark Industries so he knows security and could use someone with actual training. Just tell him I vouch for you and you'll get the job. Happy's great and I imagine the pay would be better." He told him.
"You know Iron Man's bodyguard and work for a secret government agency. Man, a lot has changed since we were kids." Grant commented and Will agreed with his statement.
"You have no idea. Remember when we were younger and had our first camping trip? How my dad told us stories about the Vorhees guy at Camp Crystal Lake and Keith peed his pants?" Will asked causing Grant to chuckle.
"And how he made us swear to never bring that up again. Right after that he tried to be as tough as he could be but whenever we needed to bust his balls, we'd just mention that camp's name and he'd get scared." Grant added causing them both to laugh. "Oh, man. Good times."
"Simpler times that's for sure." Will remarked. "A time when the mere idea of aliens was still science fiction and now look at the world. Aliens, superheroes, and I'm working for a secret government agency and taking down bad guys all around the world who probably want me dead very much."
"Hey, man. You ever need anything, any backup at all you just say the word." Grant told him.
"Likewise, man. Family always." Will said as he and Grant fist bumped just as they arrived at the store. "Thanks again for the ride. Wait out here, I'll be back."
"Right. Be careful." Grant said as Will got out of the car and walked through the empty parking lot. The morning wasn't peak busines hours for an auto part store but that worked in his favor. He noticed only two cars in the parking lot: a silver Chevy Silverado and a black 1975 Chevrolet Camaro.
He walked into the store and it was empty, so he made his way over to the customer service desk and rang the bell. A few seconds later, a red shirted employee walked over. Will looked and his shirt tag said his name was Gary.
"Can I help you?"
"Does Sandy work here?" Will asked as Gary glanced at the back room a bit.
"Um, what's this about?"
"Thanks for the clarification. I need to speak with her. It's a personal matter."
"Uh, she's on the clock." Gary told him.
"A legal personal matter." Will added.
"What are you a cop?" Gary asked in a smug tone.
"Something like that. Please, I need to speak with her. Should only take a few minutes and you can spare the time."
"I'm gonna need to see some ID." He told him causing Will to sigh.
"Fine." He took out his badge and flashed it, immediately causing Gary to swallow the smug personality he just had a few seconds ago. "Is that enough?"
"Right. Sorry sir. I'll take you to her." Gary led him into the back of the store and opened up an office door where Sandy was sitting at a desk doing paperwork.
"Hi, remember me." Will said and when Sandy saw him, she immediately adopted a face of worry and fear. "You can leave us alone now, Gary."
"Right." Gary immediately left as Sandy was now even more worried.
"Listen, I wasn't…I didn't know. I didn't know that was gonna happen." She said as Will closed the door so the two had some privacy. "It was Jeb. The big guy. Jeb Oliver. He told me you were a predator. You were supposed to start groping me. Just don't hurt me."
"Sandy, calm down and sit." Will told her as she sat back down in her chair. He took out his badge and showed her. "I'm not going to hurt you and you're not in trouble. Where is Jeb?"
"I don't know. He didn't come to work, today." She told him.
"So, he works here."
"Yeah, but it's bullshit. He cooks crystal."
"Drug dealer, of course. Write his address down please." Will said and she did as fast as she could.
"I'm really sorry, Agent. He told me you were a pervert and it was an easy hundred bucks." She told him.
"That's all?" Will questioned. "You should have asked for more money."
"When Jeb asks, you do what he says." She told him, scared of the guy.
"Well, I wouldn't worry too much about Jeb. Once I get my hands on him, he's history if he isn't already dead. Besides, his muscle that attacked me do you know of anyone else he'd work for?" Will wondered but she shook her head no. "No one he does business with?"
"I didn't know a lot. Am I in trouble?" She wondered.
"No. Keep your nose clean." Will turned around and opened the door.
"I get off work at 6." She told him causing Will to stop. "Maybe we could…"
"Sorry, Sandy but I have a girlfriend. Listen, you seem like a sweet girl, you're sharp if you're doing Gary's books for him. Don't let these guys use you." He told her.
"It's just what girls like me do." Sandy replied as Will walked to the door. "It's a shame all the good guys like you are taken."
"I'm not all that good and I'd think of taking a vacation for a few days out of the city. It's gonna get messy." Will cautioned her as he left the store. He got into Grant's rental car and handed him the address Sandy gave him. Grant drove him there with a silver Audi following them. "You catch it?"
"Yeah, silver Audi's been following us since the store. Who is it?" Grant wondered.
"If I had to wager a guess, it's someone working for whoever hired Jeb and is behind those killings. They're following me. Don't worry, keep driving." Will told him as Grant drove through the city until they came to Windstrom street, a long road of houses going up a hill by a bridge under construction. The Audi stopped at the bottom of the hill while Grant stopped near the top at a modest two-story house with some nice old-fashioned muscle cars parked outside. "Thanks for the ride, Grant. I got it from here."
"No problem. You sure you don't need me to stick around?"
"Nah, I got this. You and Daisy just look after James's sister, and keep this close." Will removed his back-holster HK pistol and handed it to Grant. "Just in case."
"Right. What about the car following you?" Grant wondered.
"If he's after me he'll stick around. Don't worry, I got a plan for that." Will told him as he got out of the car and closed the door. Grant bid him goodbye and left as Will walked up the porch steps and saw an old woman sitting on a rocking chair. Gray hair, blanket around her lap, and she looked out of it. Either heavily medicated or drugged out of her mind. "Excuse ma'am, is Jeb here?"
That's when he noticed the crack pipe on the small table next to her chair. "Ah. Well…" Will flashed her his badge. "Just so you know."
He walked into the house and began searching as the woman out front pulled out a phone and dialed a number. The TV was one, the place was a walking exigent circumstance bust with drugs all over, but it was emptied. Drawers, closets, beds, hell even the shower curtain was gone. Not exactly the actions of someone who wanted to pack up and leave town but the actions of someone who wanted you to think they left town.
"Not very subtle." He said to himself as he continued looking around. He walked down the hall before quickly turning and catching a metal bat in his hand from a thug who tried to bash his skull in. "Hi there."
Will punched him in the throat and threw him into the bathroom before ducking to avoid a crowbar that embedded itself in the wall. He kneed the second thug in the stomach, slammed his head into a picture frame and then into a wall before kneeing him in the face. He leg-tripped him onto his back, grabbed the crowbar and smacked him in the gut and then across the face, knocking him out before dropping it on the ground. He walked into the bathroom as the thug swung the bat but missed and ended up smashing the tile wall and a shelf. Will grabbed his arm and threw him face first into the mirror, causing him to scream like a little girl before throwing him face first into the sink. The impact broke part of the sink off and definitely broke the thug's nose if not broke part of his face.
"Idiots." Will muttered to himself as he walked out of the destroyed and bloody bathroom only to hear a gun click. One of the idiots from the bar fight last night was pointing a gun in his face.
"Don't move."
Will grabbed the gun, twisted his wrist and sent him onto his knees in pain. "I moved." Will twisted the gun causing the idiot to shout in pain. "Where's Jeb?"
"He's not here."
"Where can I find him?" Will asked.
"Jesus, my hand man! Let me go!"
"Well that will teach you to not play with guns." Will warned him, twisted even more and causing a finger to break. "When was the last time you saw him?"
"Last night when we were leaving jail."
"What guy? Who?"
"I don't know, I swear. Next I know, his mom woke up from a bender and his shits all gone."
"Probably dead." Will commented, searching the thug and found a pair of car keys. He then broke the guy's wrist and took the pistol before ejecting the magazine, clearing the bullet from the chamber and pulled the slide off so it was taken apart. He grabbed the thug's head so he could see his friends on the floor, bloody and unconscious. "Look at your friends and let that serve as a warning. Do you ever want to see me again?"
"No way, man."
"Good because if you do, I will kill you." He warned him before holding up the keys. "Mind if I borrow your car?"
"It's all yours man."
"Thank you." Will replied before patting him on the head. He walked out the door and looked at the woman who didn't even pay him any attention. She was still playing drugged out. Will walked up to her and placed a bullet on the table next to her. "Just so you know, you're lucky I have a lot to do today because I've killed people for less. I recommend you go to a meeting and get clean to take care of yourself. Your son isn't alive to do it."
Will left and walked over to his new car, a red and black striped 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. "At least for drug dealers they have good taste." He said out loud as he got in the car and drove away, the silver Audi from before continuing to follow him. He made his way through the city, taking the Audi on a leisure drive before stopping at the same diner he and Crystal ate at when he first arrived. He walked in for a cup of coffee with the Audi parked outside by the curb, the driver keeping a watch over him.
The driver had been sitting his car for an hour as he kept watch over the diner for his target. He let out a loud yawn and rubbed his eyes when he noticed his target was gone.
[Knock-Knock] The driver turned to see Will standing outside his car door. "Hi there."
Before the driver could even reach for his gun, Will punched through the glass and punched him across the face before grabbing him by the throat and yanking him out of the car, ripping the seatbelt in the process. He dropped him face first onto the ground and stepped on his head with his boot, causing the broken glass and pebbles on the ground to dig into his face. Will reached into the car and took out the Beretta he was reaching for.
"You won't mind if I borrow this, will you?" Will asked rhetorically before applying pressure to his skull and causing him to scream in pain. "Now you and I are going to have a talk about who you work for."
Helen was busying all day, doing her job of trying to make a case to prevent the death penalty for James Barr. Grant and Daisy were looking after Diana when Grant got a call from Will to meet him somewhere and for him to bring Diana and Helen. From the urgency in his voice, he needed to do it now. They all got into Grant's rental car and drove through the city until they reached the place Will wanted to meet them. An alley in the middle of the city in between two commercial office buildings. Grant texted him they were here, and Will walked out of the alley door and motioned them to come in.
Grant parked the car and once they were in, Will locked the door before leading them down some stairs until they reached a long stretch of a hallway. "Will, where are you taking us?" Daisy asked.
"Someplace safe." He told her, leading her to the door at the end of the hallway. He let them in and closed it behind them before turning on the lights. They were now in what looked like an old utility room, but it had been retrofitted to look more like a small apartment. There was a bed in the far corner, a couch, TV, a kitchen and a bathroom.
"Where are we?" Helen asked.
"Someplace safe. Diana, you can make yourself comfortable. There's food in the fridge and the bathroom's right there. Daisy, you stay with her." Will said as they got comfortable on the couch. He motioned Helen and Grant to follow him to the closet where he removed the false back to reveal a heavy reinforced titanium door with a special keypad and scanner. Will scanned his badge and input some numbers and letters before it unlocked and they walked through to reveal a secret room filled with high-tech computers, monitors, radio, and an armory.
"Whoa." Grant said to himself.
"It's a SHIELD safehouse in the city. It's not the only one by any means but any agent that needs rest or equipment knows its here and you'll never mention it again." Will told them, leading them through another door that led to a secret garage filled with tarped covered cars. He led them over to where a silver Audi was parked.
"That's the car that was following you all day." Grant told him.
"Yup and here…" Will opened the trunk to reveal the driver. Battered, bruised, and tied up with a gag but alive. "Is the driver. Meet Hank Molotov, resident Russian scumbag for hire. Don't worry, Helen. This isn't a kidnapping."
"Then what is it? Why did you bring us here?" She wanted to know what the hell was going on.
"Just that I was right. You got yourself a conspiracy." Will told her and filled her in on everything he got from his talking with Hank.
A few minutes later, they moved to first room of the safehouse where Helen sat on the couch next to Diana, still reeling from everything he told her. Grant handed her some water and she drank it with gusto.
"I need a minute." Helen commented.
"Take your time but you were the one who took the case. And I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so." Will commented, bringing over some files he printed from the computer.
"What's going on?" Diana asked, confused as to everything happening and where she was.
"What's going on is that Grant was right to call me, Diana. Your brother was set up by some very bad and very dangerous people." He told her. "This wasn't a random killing of five innocent people. It's a conspiracy to kill four random people and one main target: Oline Archer."
"So, you were right?" Daisy asked and Will nodded.
"Hank helped fill in the gaps and we now know who we're dealing with." He answered.
"He just told you?" Diana asked.
"I asked nicely." Will said, putting a file about Lebendauer Enterprises in the table. "They wanted Oline Archer's construction business and were already in the process of taking it over the legal way when she decided to fight back. Getting a loan to keep her husband's company in business and draw out their plans so Lebendauer decided to act."
"Killing her to make it go away." Helen finished.
"And it's not the first time. These guys are parasites. Everything is tied back to a shell company back in Georgia, the one next to Russia not Florida. They work one city at a time, acquiring a local construction company just ahead of a major civic redevelopment. They build bridges that no one needs, highways that no one uses, and they profit off it all. They've moved 12 times in the last 15 years. Atlanta, Albuquerque, Austin, Oklahoma City, Sacramento amidst allegations of corruption, blackmail, bribery, and millions of dollars in public funding going missing. And they do this by being both ruthless and smart. They bribe, extort, or force key officials to keep them moving along with local police and any idiot gangs and hoodlums who need work. Anyone they can't buy off, they kill like Oline." Will explained as Helen looked over the files. "They manipulate the system so effectively that the city gets duped out of millions and by the time they even think to look at Lebendauer they're already at their next city."
"That's a crazy theory. Can you even prove any of it?" Helen asked again for clarification.
"Our buddy Hank will along who he works for." He placed another file down on someone named Charlie Reynolds. "Charlie Reynolds. He's the shooter."
"You're kidding." Grant walked over so he could look at the file over Helen's shoulder.
"Former Marine Corp sniper before he was dishonorably discharged for aggressive behavior and allegations of corruption and thievery. After he was discharged, he became a merc for the hire and Lebendauer's head muscle and number two." Will told them. "He met James at a Gun Range outside the city. Once he got to know James enough, he used him as a patsy. Drugging him at a night out at a bar, then using his clothes, and sniper rifles for the killing along with placing some evidence before putting it back and letting James take the fall."
"Who's their number 1? The person behind all this?" Helen asked.
"Someone named Zec. It's Russian for prisoner. He didn't know his real name but they're the ones behind everything." Will explained.
"Ok, so we go to the police and tell them everything we know and get these guys." Diana said only for Will to shake his head.
"No, that's not an option. They have an in with the police and several members of the city leadership. We go to the police now and tip our hands then you're all dead. It's why I brought you here." He told her. "Their informant in the police gave them everything on me since I arrived in the city, but they don't know I'm a SHIELD agent because that information isn't public record. I still have the advantage so I'm going to take the fight to them. Their set up at a rock quarry outside the city. That's where Charlie and the Zec will be and that's where I'll bring them in."
"You can't just do that, you're not police." Helen told him.
"I'm a SHIELD agent and acting within my authority until article 7.6.9-J, to apprehend any an all suspects or criminals involved in my investigation. I'm your investigator which makes it my investigation as well. Stay here until I come back." Will told them as he made his way to the armory.
"And what happens if you don't come back?" Helen asked.
"I'll be back." He assured her as he walked into the armory and grabbed a bag, filling it with some gear he needed. He grabbed a thigh holster/belt to carry his HK pistol and some extra ammo before grabbing an M4 Assault Rifle when Grant walked in.
"Think you could use some backup?" Grant wondered as Will attached a red dot/hybrid sight onto the rifle along with a laser sight.
"I'll be fine, Grant. Stay here and look after them until I get back." Will replied, putting the rifle on the table before grabbing a Remington 879 Masterkey compact shotgun and making sure it was empty before grabbing a brush to clean some dust out. "There's a chance it might get messy."
"Going in by yourself for sure but if you had some trusted backup then it'd be easier." Grant told him. "Come on, man. I sat out the last time you helped us."
"It'd be dangerous, Grant. I can't ask you to take a risk like that." Will said.
"Well it's a good think you're not asking, I'm telling you that I'm helping and if that doesn't work then I can always sit on your head like I did when we were kids." Grant warned him, getting a chuckle as a response.
"Yeah, I'm not sure that would be a good idea on your part." Will commented. "What about Daisy?"
"She'll be fine here. This is a safehouse and if you're right that they don't know you're SHIELD and that they have the police then this is the safest place for her. Come on, man." Grant begged as Will relented before handing him the M4. "My preferred gun. Thanks."
"All right, well with the two of us we can catch them off guard and I get a chance to use this." Will grabbed an SR-25 Sniper rifle off the shelf. "But we've still got one more thing we need to get."
"What's that?" Grant wondered.
"Bait."

Elsewhere in the city, Detective Emmerson was doing some paperwork at the station when he got a text on a burner phone he carried for private use. He opened it and it read, come to the empty park near Howard Street, have some insurance on the investigator working the Barr case.
Emmerson saved up his work and turned off his computer before grabbing his jacket and leaving the station in his squad car. He eventually arrived at the spot and saw a silver Audi in the park with someone in the driver's seat next to a red Chevrolet, so he walked over and tapped the window which was then rolled down.
"Sorry, I'm late. What's the insurance?" Emmerson asked.
"You, detective." Emmerson looked and saw the driver remove his hood to reveal Will's face sitting in the driver seat. "You're my insurance but I prefer to think of you as bait."
Emmerson reached for his gun only to hear a click behind him and see Grant walk up to him with an M4 Assault rifle pointed at him. Will got out of the car and took Emmerson's gun, phones, and radio before removing the jacket he was wearing to reveal his black tactical clothing and gear. "Do you have any idea the shit you just kicked up? You really think you can point a gun at a police officer?" Emmerson asked, rhetorically.
"A police officer, no but a crooked cop working for the bad guys? Yeah, I think I can." Will reached into his pocket and flashed Emmerson his SHIELD badge, getting satisfaction of watching Emmerson's smug smirk be replaced with a frown. "Like I told you before, I have a thing with cops who don't deserve the badge."
"You can't prove anything." Emmerson told him only for Will to grab him by the shoulder and drag him over to the back of the car. He popped the trunk to reveal Hank all tied up and he screamed into his gag when he saw Emmerson.
"No, but he and his buddies can. We had a very nice talk and I know everything, including the Zec." Will told him and Emmerson really got nervous. "It's a good thing we're going to see him right now and I hope your good friends because you're going to need them in jail."
Will kicked out his leg and put him in a sleeper hold. Emmerson struggled as much as he could, but he was no match and soon passed out. Will used Emmerson cuffs to put his hands behind his back and his tie to gag him before throwing him into the back seat of the Chevelle. He did the same thing with Hank and moved him from the Audi trunk to the Chevelle trunk.
"Now what?" Grant asked.
"Now, we show these assholes they chose the wrong profession." Will told him.
At a rock quarry just outside the city limits, the contracted workers and construction crew of Lebendauer enterprises had already clocked out with only a few stragglers running behind but they were all leaving. Once they were gone, the only people left in the quarry were the muscle/goons/criminal enforcers of Lebendauer working for Charlie and the Zec. At the moment, one of the thugs was busy on the phone trying to reach Hank. He was tailing that investigator for the defense attorney but should have checked in and now he wasn't answering his phone.
"Anything?" Charlie asked only for the thug to shake his head no. Hank wasn't picking up. That's when his phone rang and saw it was from Emmerson. "What?"
"How do you do, Charlie?"
Charlie didn't recognize the voice as Emmerson and signaled the thug to hang up. "Who is this?"
"Oh, just a concerned citizen but you'll probably know me as Helen Rodin's investigator." Charlie heard so he signaled someone to get Zec and signaled another to get to work on the computer. "I'll admit something, you guys are much more clever than typical criminals. More ruthless and diabolical for sure. It's done you good in the past, but your luck has run out."
"Is that so?" Charlie scoffed, thinking this guy was just all talk but was ready to defend himself and had one of his guys try to work up a trace on the call. "And how do you figure that?"
"Because I know everything."
"Oh, you know everything?" Charlie chuckled as his friend was still working through the trace. "So, like where Big Foot's located and where Unicorns come from?"
"Oh, keep talking like that and they're going to love you in prison. And I'm talking about conspiracy to kill four innocent people in order to cover up the assassination of Oline Archer so you can take over her construction business and how you framed James Barr. All so you and the Zec can profit and leech money from this city like a parasite." Charlie instantly froze and adopted a more serious tone. "Yeah, I know about the Zec and that you were the one who did the shooting. I know where to get the evidence, who you paid off and who's working for you."
"Is that so? Well, if you really know who you're dealing with then you should know we're not people you should fucking take likely. We will find your friends, that lawyer, every single person who you've ever known or talked to and by the time we're done with them, they'll be begging to die, and we'll kill them right in front of you." Charlie warned as his friend was nearly done with the trace.
"Oh, like I've never heard that one before. I was honestly hoping for some originality. And don't worry about tracing this call, I'm coming to you." He hung up leaving Charlie in a sour mood as his friend just finished the trace before the call ended.
"Where is he?" Charlie asked as his friend turned his laptop to show a map with a dot that was only a mile away. "Get everyone locked and loaded and into their positions. Move!"
Charlie grabbed an M-14 sniper rifle and took up a sniper position at the top of the quarry hills by the floodlights, giving him a solid vantage point with cover and bright lights to obscure his position. There were 12 other muscle enforcers arming up with assault rifles and began taking positions all over with another 10 coming down from the main office. He got into position and checked his scope, looking around the area as his men got into positions of cover by large trucks, trailers, or large groupings of rocks. They trained their guns on the single stretch of road that led into the quarry as it was the place he would come from.
About a minute passed with everyone in position and their weapons ready and set on the road when they saw a pair of headlights closing in. Soon enough the sound of a car engine could be heard, and they saw a Silver Audi speeding towards them. Charlie looked through his sniper scope but noticed the car was speeding in reverse towards so he couldn't see the driver. A clever tactic.
Charlie took the first shot and shattered the read glass window. His second and third shots took out the side mirrors and his fourth skimmed the roof near the driver's seat. After his fourth shot, the other thugs began firing at the car as it got closer, riddling the car with bullets until it backed up over a large rock that got stuck underneath the car and kept the wheel from hitting the ground. It was now stuck on the road as two goons walked closer, still pouring bullets into the car, reloading and doing it again. One of the two walked over to the car only to see no one inside with a brick on the accelerator pedal and a pipe keeping the steering wheel in place.
"It's empty!" The dude shouted only for a bullet to shoot right through his brain, killing him instantly so he dropped to the floor like a sack of potatoes. His friend was soon riddled with bullets curtesy of Grant who had stealthily made his way into the quarry while they were distracted by the car. He was decked out in tactical gear with an M4 assault rifle and advanced forward, firing more bullets through the quarry causing everyone to take cover before he moved behind some rocks for cover and to reload.
While Grant was hiding behind cover and reloading, the rest of the criminals in the quarry opened fire from their positions. Their heavy fire kept him pinned down, but he wasn't that worried as one of the shooters by a front loader walked forward, firing on the intruder only to get taken out by a bullet to the brain. Charlie reloaded his rifle when he noticed one of his guys get taken out by a headshot except their target was hiding behind cover. Then he saw another of his guys hiding by some rocks get shot in the arm causing him to the fall to the ground before another bullet blew his brains out. They had a sniper on them.
Said sniper was Will who had taken up a position like Charlie, by some rocks and floodlights but the one thing that was different was that Will's SR-25 sniper rifle was suppressed so no one noticed him yet. He looked through the scope at two goons firing at Grant from a concrete mixer, so he fired the first shot, taking out the first guy with another headshot. The second guy saw his friend get taken out, so he turned to fire only for Will to kill him with another headshot. By now, some of the other shooters knew there was a sniper up on the hill, so they fired in his general direction. Will stayed in his cover, not moving an inch to give them a better target as bullets hissed and cracked near him.
"I've got their attention. Move up." Will said into his earpiece as he killed another shooter with a headshot.
"Roger that." Grant replied into his earpiece as he raced out from behind his cover across the quarry and made it behind some rocks before Charlie could land a hit. "Whew, just like old times, huh Will?"
"I imagine there's a difference between paint ball and this." Will scored another headshot at a guy hiding by some rocks before he saw someone shooting from behind a large dump truck. He didn't have a clear shot, so he adjusted his aim and fired. The bullet ricocheted off at an angle and skimmed his knee, causing him to drop to the ground where Will now had an unobstructed view and shot him in the heart.
Charlie seethed as he saw his guys getting taken out, so he focused on taking out the sniper. He quickly left his perch to try and flush him out while his men kept up the pressure on the two heroes. Grant peaked out of cover and fired back, forcing one of the shooters to hide behind the trailer office only for Will to fire a shot through a window in the office and hit him in the back. Grant ran out from cover and over to another rock where he caught another shooter off guard and riddled him with bullets before he had to reload.
"How many we got left?" Grant asked as Will sniped another shooter by the hydraulic excavator and then another by a road roller.
"Five." Will told him, seeing two shooters advancing on Grant with heavy fire. "You got two shooters on your six o'clock. I'll take one. Standby."
He fired a bullet through the side of one of them which went through and nicked the other guy so Grant could step out and shoot him in the chest. "I'm moving up." Grant moved over by a truck for cover and reloaded.
Will noticed one of the flood lights dim and its position was adjusted in his general direction which made him visible. Charlie had done this to find the sniper and when he had a visual, he fired two shots, but both hit the rocks around Will who fired only one bullet which scored a direct hit on Charlie's rifle. The impact caught him by surprise as he quickly hid behind the machine just as a bullet skimmed past him. He checked his gun and saw a hole straight through the middle of the gun, rendering it useless so he dropped it and raced back to the main office. Will would have kept up the fire but saw Grant take out another shooter only to see two sneak around a dump truck in an attempt to catch him from behind so Will pulled the trigger only to hear a click. He quickly reloaded his magazine just as the shooters cleared the truck and fired two shots which scored two kills just as Grant turned around.
"Whew, thanks for the save, man. You're one heck of a sniper." Grant told him.
"Well, I've been trained by the best. That takes care of the quarry but there are some over at the main office. Regroup on me." Will picked up his rifle and got moving while Grant got into one of the dump trucks and drove over to pick him up. Grant drove the dump truck up the hill and followed the road until they came to the main quarry office where the last five guards were waiting but when he got close Grant veered to the side and drove to the exit. This caught the guards by surprise only for Will to pop out from behind one of the parked trucks and shoot them all in the chest with his pistol and they hit the ground quickly. He ejected the empty magazine and loaded a new one in as he walked by one of the guards who was still alive only to kill him with a double tap to the heart.
"Ha-ha, suckers." Grant said to himself as he parked the dump truck and rejoined Will.
Charlie picked up an assault rifle and looked around when he noticed that the last of his men were already dead on the ground. He moved quietly through the courtyard only to feel a metal bump on the back of his head.
"Toss it." Will said causing Charlie to groan and he did. Grant walked over and kicked the gun away as Will holstered his pistol before he Spartan-kicked Charlie in the chest. The impact sent him flying into a truck with a loud thud and he passed out so Will put some zip cuffs on his hands and searched him, removing two hidden knives and a phone. "Come on."
They moved to the main office and got on both sides of the door. Grant had his M4 ready while Will pulled out his pistol. He gave them a silent countdown from three then Grant kicked the door in allowing Will through first followed by Grant. They were ready for anything only to see the office was occupied by one person sitting at the far desk, his face obscured by darkness. Will walked forward while Grant kept his weapon ready for any surprises, but it looked like they took down everyone else leaving just this guy. Will turned on a desk lamp and they got their first good look at the Zec who was just an old man with one greyed out eye.
"So, this is him." Grant seethed in anger as he saw the man behind everything including framing his friend. "Not all that to look at."
"So, you're the Zec. What's your real name?" Will asked only for the man to say nothing so he pointed his gun right at his face. "It's twenty seconds to 10pm. When that's over I'm pulling the trigger."
The seconds went by quickly as the man didn't seem to react until it got closer. "Five seconds…" Will cocked the hammer back on his pistol. "One…"
"Chelovek. Zec Chelovek."
"Chelovek? Human. Prisoner human being, that's your name?" Will asked.
"That is all I remember." Zec told him.
"Well, with a name like yours you're going to feel right at home soon enough." Grant commented.
"Prison? In America? A retirement home if I go to prison at all." Zec told them.
"You really think you're gonna walk." Will muttered.
"You two are wayward vigilantes with no authority or legal right to be here and you just killed several men. Meanwhile, I am an old man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thanks to your actions, who is left to say otherwise? We'll see which one goes to prison." Zec said, thinking he had the edge here, but he had no idea how wrong he was.
"Unfortunately, there are a few things wrong with your assumption. First, not all of your men are dead. Charlie's still alive and he'll be put on trial for the killings. So, is his buddy Hank and your police mole Detective Emmerson. And I know everything. Who you paid off. Who's working for you and who you killed, and I know how to prove it. Secondly, I have legal authority over you because of this." Will took out badge and showed him and instantly Zec's smirk went away. "You didn't really think you were that smart, did you? And lastly, I can personally guarantee that any prison you get sent to will not be a retirement home, despite your age. But something tells me it won't last that long as I'm sure the DA will work overtime to charge you and Charlie with the death penalty."
"Yeah, I hear he's never lost a case he couldn't win and with everything we know it's going to be a slam dunk." Grant added.
"You lost, Zec. I know everything, I know who you have working for you in the city and local government and they'll be going to prison soon as well. Those families are going to get justice and you lost." Will said before pulling out his gun and aiming it at Zec's face, tempted to pull the trigger. That's when he noticed Zec's hands. His left one just had finger nubs and a thumb while his right-hand had nubs as well but a full index finger and thumb. So, he adjusted his aim and blew off the index finger causing the man to scream in pain before Will pistol whipped him across the face, knocking him out. "Now they match."
"Damn. Remember me never to piss you off." Grant commented as Will took out a cellphone and dialed a number.
"FBI Pittsburgh field office, how can I help you?"
"This is Agent William Detmer of SHIELD, serial number NE616IN requesting phone transfer to local director of criminal, cyber, response, and service branch." Will said.
"Authorization code?"
"Zero-Lima-Tango-Alpha-Six-Bravo-Five." Will answered.
"One moment." The line was transferred, and he had to wait a couple seconds until it stopped. "This is director Wilcox. How can I help you, Agent Detmer."
"I've got a slam dunk and solid case for the FBI to handle in Pittsburgh, sir. A grand conspiracy and some killers." Will told him as he filled him in on what was going on about everything.
Come the next afternoon, FBI teams had organized various arrests throughout the city on city officials, cops, and others who had helped Lebendauer enterprises in their plans. Emmerson, Charlie and his goon along with Zec were arrested and put in isolated cells as all the information and facts on the shooting were submitted to the DA. The news crews got wind of the story and soon enough the truth came out. James Barr wasn't a derange or psychotic killer and was instead framed for the murder by Lebendauer enterprises who killed four innocent people to hide the killings of Oline Archer. Naturally people were upset and FBI teams around in other states that Lebendauer did business were working on taking down the remaining sites.
The news of the truth was great for the FBI who took credit for the arrest and work with the help of a confidential information (Will) and he was fine with that. Something like this is a little below what SHIELD deals with and he didn't care about the publicity. The mayor ran with it as best he could to put himself in a good light, but the families were a little unsure how to take the news. Normally, finding the true people behind the crime would be great but learning their loved ones were killed just for a construction contract didn't help as much as you'd think. But Zec and Charlie were behind bars and DA Emmerson was for sure going to pursue the case with the attorney general for the death penalty. And they dismissed the charges on Barr which was great for him and Diana. Helen thanked him as well for getting to the truth and Daisy and Grant were glad things worked out.
Just another day for Will. Even on his vacation he ends up working but that's his life now…and he's not stopping anytime soon.

August 2012: El Paso, Texas
At the border city between the US and Mexico in a rather large but unassuming warehouse owned by a shell corporation, laid the shipping point for one of the largest cocaine and illegal goods trafficking cartels in Mexico. All the way from Sinaloa, the drugs or whatever else needed smuggling made its way through the border and resided here where it was shipped all over the country. The two-story warehouse that took up an entire city block was a longtime target for the DEA, but they never had enough to make a case until they heard a SHIELD agent had intel. Not just solid intel but information that Hernando Garcia, the head of this cartel was going to be there. That was too big an opportunity to miss so the two worked together with the DEA set up around the perimeter on overwatch and to prevent anyone from escaping.
The head DEA agent was with his team set up in a room a block away from the warehouse with a clear line of sight on the warehouse. A DEA sniper was perched by the window while a tech team was checking surveillance cameras along with any incoming radio chatter from the other teams along with anything they could intercept from the warehouse.
"This is agent Makrow. All units report in." Head agent Makrow spoke into a radio as he glanced out the window at the warehouse.
"Sniper team 1 in position. Direct line of sight on the entrance. Four guards with visible weapons on the ground floor, two lookouts on the roof."
"Sniper team 2 in position. Visible confirmation on the lookouts on the roof. Target locked."
"Sniper team 3 in position. Visual confirmation on three guards in the cargo loading area. Target locked."
"Tactical team 1 in position. Ready to move on your go."
"Tactical team 2 in position. Ready to move on your go."
"Tactical team 3 in position. Ready to cover east exit."
"Tactical team 4 in position. Ready to cover west exit."
"Tactical team 5 in position. Ready to cover north exit."
"Tactical team 6 in position. Ready to cover south exit."
"Roger that." Agent Makrow changed his radio channel. "Agent Detmer, this is Agent Makrow. All teams in position."
"Roger that. Don't engage until you get the signal." His response was as the radio call ended.
"You sure about this plan, sir? Going in solo seems crazy and why wait for his signal. We should move in when things pop off." One of his men said.
"And risk getting ambushed by the cartel's reinforcements? No, the agent's intel was solid. We wait until the reinforcements arrive and then the signal." Agent Makrow told him.
"That agent better have a solid plan then to go in alone." The sniper muttered when they heard gun fire over their radios.
"Was that one of us?" Agent Makrow asked his tech guys.
"Negative, sir. It's coming from inside the warehouse." The tech guy cleaned up the signal and they soon heard an orchestra of gun fire along with screaming, bone breaking and glass breaking. The snipers and spotters could see the muzzle flashes of guns through the windows along with a lot of people moving about. From what they could see and hear over the radio, clearly the cartel was losing. The guards and lookouts outside the warehouse quickly rushed in to help their friends but it was hard to tell if it helped. They heard one of the cartel soldiers call in reinforcements and they were a few minutes away.
"Sir, permission to move into position and engage?" Tactical team 1 asked.
"Negative. Stand down. Cartel reinforcements are on their way. Let them get into position." Agent Makrow told him as the DEA agents were getting anxious and wanted to get into the fight. One of the snipers saw three cartel soldiers get gunned down before a fourth soldier was thrown out the window and crashed down onto the pavement with a splat.
"Jesus, it's a massacre in there." The sniper muttered to himself as he saw three pickup trucks coming down the road, loaded with cartel soldiers. "Sniper team 3 to command. I've got eyes on three enemy vehicles coming in from the east."
"Sniper team 2 to command. Three additional enemy vehicles arriving from the south."
"Roger that. Standby." Agent Makrow changed the radio channel. "Agent Detmer, cartel reinforcements have arrived. Status report."
"Hang on a second…" He heard before hearing a screeching sound of a flashbang going off that forced him to move the radio away from his head. That sound was then followed up with the sound of a small explosion and they could see a small grenade like explosion go off near the cargo area. The cartel reinforcements arrived at the main entrance and cargo area and got loaded for action. "Now!"
"All teams, go! Go! Go! Go!" Makrow ordered as the snipers began taking out the cartel soldiers outside the warehouse while the tactical teams moved out in vans. Four of the teams secured the exits in case any tried to run while two larger teams made their way to the main entrance and cargo area where they caught the Cartel reinforcements by surprise. The brave or suicidal soldier tried to fight only to get gunned down while the others quickly dropped their guns and surrendered as those agents secured them and their guns.
Agent Makrow and his team piled up at the main entrance with backup and were ready to breach when they heard the shooting stop. Then something smashed through the glass window on the second floor and crashed onto one of the cartel trucks. Agent Makrow looked and saw it was a body but when he got closer, he realized it was Hernando Garcia. His face cut up and bloody, probably from going through the glass and had a bullet hole in his leg and some more riddling his bullet proof vest. He signaled his men to quickly secure Garcia when the main entrance door opened, and they saw Will walk out. He seemed fine, a cut or two on his face and some blood flecks but he was fine.
Will was wearing SHIELD tactical gear with his HK pistol holstered on his thigh, his compact shotgun slung over his back, spare ammo on his vest and holding his TDI/KRISS Vector-.45 ACP submachine gun in his left hand and dragging Garcia's second in command by the foot with his right hand. The warehouse itself looked like a warzone with blood, bullets, and bodies all over the place. Most of the bodies were cartel soldiers and enforcers who opened fire on Will so they were dead but there were about a dozen or so tied up but unconscious.
"Everything you could possibly want is in there, but you might want to clean up first." Will commented, dropping Garcia's second in command.
The DEA agents quickly got to work on securing the warehouse with backup arriving to secure the prisoners and everything else on the scene. This was a big win for the DEA and would make the bosses very happy. After his quick debrief with Agent Makrow and tying up some loose ends, Will got cleaned up and began making his way away from the warehouse. He saw Garcia and his men getting loaded into a large prison van which made him smile as he saw all the death glares he was getting.
He walked past some agents who thanked and congratulated him until he made it to his red and black stripped 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. After the whole thing in Pittsburgh with Lebendauer, he kept the car for himself to get around. His bike was back home, so he needed a ride and the thing was able to fit into SHIELD planes when he needed to go somewhere. You'd think that a SHIELD agent would modify the car with every single gadget known to man but that wasn't Will. He did some tune ups on the engine, adding in bullet proof glass and made a false bottom in the trunk to hold his gear and weapons but other than that the car was just regular old school American muscle.
He opened the trunk and put his gear away in the false bottom compartments before getting into the driver's seat. He grabbed his backpack in the passenger seat and took out a water bottle and laptop. He finished the water bottle in a few glugs before booting up his laptop and accessing some files.
"Edi, you informed command on our success, right?" Will asked and Edi's interface on his computer activated.
"I did and they send their congratulations. Well done, tonight."
"Thank you. And with me here, we'll have a chance to tackle the growing list of missing persons in the state." Will looked over the files on the people who have gone missing in the state. More so than the yearly average since the 70s and it's only been getting higher. The FBI and state police had no idea what was going on and thought all the disappearances were unrelated, so he decided to take a chance on the case. He was here and he just finished a mission so he could use with something to do. "Did your research and algorithms come up with anything?"
"One possible avenue of exploration. There doesn't seem to be any particular discerning factors that would suggest a type. All of the missing persons are of various ages, races, genders, and are both from in and out of state but I did find one thing. Almost all the victims were traveling through a 150 square mile area of central Texas." Edi said, showing on a map that almost all of the people who went missing had been in that area before they vanished.
"What's in that area?" Will wondered.
"Nothing of note. Most of it is wide open plains, a long stretch of a highway with one town and a shutdown meat factory but it is the best lead I was able to surmise from the information." Edi informed him.
"All right, it's better than nothing. I'll start in the town and then work my way out. Looks like I'm heading to Newt, Texas." Will turned on the engine and made his way to a motel to get some sleep and he'd leave first thing in the morning. What he didn't know was that this little trip would show him a side of humanity that is the exception of SHIELD belief that humanity is worth protecting.

He woke up early in the morning, grabbed some coffee and a donut before making the drive from El Paso to Central Texas. Luckily, he did it first thing in the morning so he could avoid any morning traffic as he made it onto the interstate. During his drive, he made a call to his uncles to check on how they were doing. His uncle Jeffrey Mace was in Germany on assignment and his uncle Stewart and aunt Lenore were on vacation with Kim before she went back to Columbia. They went to Hawaii but lucky for Will was that they could take Goose with them. Will would look after Goose as best he could but being an agent and having a pet was hard. Granted, it wasn't exactly a pet but a Flerken but that's beside the point. But he managed to work something out with his aunt and uncle who agreed to watch over him when he was busy and failing that he was able to drop him off at a friends like Bobby, Alex, or Clarice. Grant and Daisy watched him for a bit before his aunt and uncle picked him up. He made sure to tell Goose to not hurt, scratch or eat any of his friends and to just act like a regular cat. Kim was fine with it and she bonded with Goose quickly and now he was going on vacation with them. He'd have to work out something else. Maybe bring him on missions and leave him at base or wherever he was stationed.
Anyway, he soon turned onto a two lane stretch of road that led into the search area Edi found deep in the center of Texas. Long gone were the signs of other cars and signs of other people as he just saw grass, dirt, and road as far as he could see. A highway sign would pop up every mile or so, but they were old and clearly weren't maintained which signified this was a place not a lot of people ventured through. Still, Edi was never wrong, and this place could give him some answers. He's been unlucky before so maybe that would continue again, and he'd end up captured by the people responsible. His luck had a way of making it, so he ran into bad situations.
After a long drive down the two-lane highway with nothing to show for it, he was starting to think he'd find nothing but farmland, cows, and asphalt. Lucky his AC was working because August in Texas was just brutal. That's when he saw something up the road which was a van and five people, college students most likely. They were all outside and looked like they needed help and one of the guys flagged him down, so he stopped just ahead of them and parked his car. He grabbed his HK pistol and holstered it behind his back with his blue t-shirt covering it and placed an extra magazine in his boot before he stepped out.
"Hey, are you guys all right?" Will asked as he walked over and saw the girls looked distraught.
"Not at all, man." The guy in the short sleeve button-up and baseball hat said. "Sorry but we need help."
That's when Will noticed the blood in the back of the van. He walked over and saw a dead girl in the back with a hole in her head, the back window blown out and a revolver by her hand. "Jesus, what happened?"
"We picked her up the road and she kept going on about something crazy and horrible people and how she didn't want to go back. Then she pulled out that gun and shot herself." The dude said as Will got closer to get a better look. "We don't know why but she just did it."
"Are you guys all right?" Will asked, subtly reading all their minds and the guy was telling the truth. They picked up the girl and she killed herself.
"Yeah, just a little shaken up. Sorry, I'm Kemper."
"I'm Will Detmer."
"That's my girlfriend Erin, and our friends Morgan, Andy, and Pepper." Kemper introduced everyone.
"All right, hang on." Will took out his phone but wasn't getting a clear signal, so he activated Edi but put the phone to his ear, so it was like he was taking a call. "Edi, contact the local Sheriff."
"One second." Will heard the dial tone go off for about a minute as everyone looked at him for an answer. The dial tone kept ringing until he got a machine.
"Seriously?" Will wondered how the hell could a phone just keep ringing at the sheriff's office. He checked his GPS and saw there was a gas station up the road about five minutes from here. "Sorry guys but the Sheriff isn't picking up. There's a gas station about five minutes from here. We can make a call there and get this sorted out."
"You want us to drive around with a dead girl in the back seat?" Pepper asked, not liking that idea at all.
"Unless you guys are ok with just staying here and waiting?" Will pointed out and some of them relented that idea. "If any of you want, you can ride in my car."
"Sounds like a good idea." Pepper said when Andy stopped her.
"Whoa, Pepper you're just going to get into his car. You don't even know this guy." He pointed out.
"I didn't know you until yesterday." Pepper replied as she walked over to him.
"Just follow me and I'll lead you there." Will told them as he walked back to his car. Erin didn't like the idea of her going with a stranger, so she went with him and Andy as well leaving Kemper and Morgan to ride in the van. Erin, Pepper, and Andy got into Will's car as he started the engine and led Kemper down the road to the gas station. "Sorry this happened to you guys."
"Thanks. What are you doing here?" Erin asked.
"Working." He told her as he made a turn and Andy looked back to make sure Kemper followed. Will reached into his pocket for his SHIELD Badge and tapped the symbol twice, making the information on the badge change so it looked more like an FBI badge before showing them. "Agent Will Detmer, FBI. I'm looking into a string of disappearances and missing people in the area."
"How many people?" Pepper asked, feeling a little better he was an FBI agent. Andy and Erin felt relieved as well.
"More than usual but they've all seem to have come through this area. I'm thinking that girl might be one of them." Will said as they arrived at an old gas station/shop. They got out of the car and saw the sign, Cecile gas and Sawyer meats.
Erin walked over to Kemper and told him that Will was an FBI agent and that made him feel better. Kemper, Andy, and Morgan walked into the store while Erin and Pepper went to find a bathroom. Inside the store was an old woman with glasses and a tall, lanky and creepy looking guy wearing dirty clothes and a smock. Not someone you wanted handling your food but then again, the entire place looked like someplace you didn't want to eat.
"Ma'am, we need to report a suicide." Kemper told her.
"Something like this comes along, makes folk realize how crazy the world is out there." She remarked.
"Would you mind calling the sheriff, ma'am?" Kemper asked and she was more than happy to on an old rotary phone behind the counter. The creepy lanky guy gave them all weird looks but went to the back to do whatever.
Will stayed by his car, drinking some water as he looked over some of the files on his computer to try and see if the girl in the back of that van was a match but would take a while. That's when he saw Kemper and the others walk out of the store, clearly not happy.
"What's going on?"
"Apparently the sheriff won't meet us here. Says we need to go to the old Crawford Mill." Morgan told him.
"What? That doesn't seem right." Will commented.
"I know but she said the Sheriff told her to meet us there." Kemper said as he and the others got into the van. Will closed his laptop and got into his car with Erin, Andy, and Pepper and drove away.
The woman peaked out the window of the store and smiled. "Nubbins, call Drayton and tell him to invite the in-laws. We've got a lot of meat on the menu tonight."
"Right away, Mama Luda Mae." Nubbins picked up the phone, giddy with how things were going to turn out tonight.
Will and the others drove away from the shop and made their way down a lonely farm road until smoothed over asphalt turned into rocky terrain and they eventually made it to the sawmill. They got out and looked around, but it was empty and abandoned with no sheriff. Kemper, Erin, Andy, Morgan and Pepper talked about what they were going to do and a lot of them were wondering if they could leave and let Will handle everything with Erin being the voice of dissent with that idea. They wandered around a bit and saw an old busted up trailer that looked like a baby house from hell.
Will was sticking close to his car as Edi managed to find a match on the dead girl in the van, proving his theory that she was one of the recent people to go missing. Elizabeth Duront from Austin, Texas so a local and her parents and brothers were reported missing a month ago. He would have dug deeper when Pepper and Morgan raced over.
"There's something in the sawmill." Morgan said as they brought him over to the trailer where they saw it, but Erin had gone in.
"AH! KEMPER!" They heard as Will rushed into the warehouse with everyone following him and saw Erin over near some lockers where they heard something inside. Will motioned them to keep quiet and to stay back as he unholstered his KH pistol and pulled the hammer back. He tapped the locker and heard some mewling which made him lower his guard and signaled the others to relax as he opened the door and it was just a possum.
That's when they heard thumping coming from above so Will walked forward with his gun and turned the corner only to see a kid.
"Oh my god." Erin commented.
Line Break xxxxx
The kid looked like he had been living here for a while but with Erin's help they managed to coax him out to the trailer where they could talk. His name was Thomas Hewitt and he did manage to tell them that the sheriff was home getting drunk. He lived on a farm which was a short walk through the woods. Will decided to go to have a talking to the sheriff while Erin and Kemper went with him to tell him what was going on. The woods were creepy yet beautiful to walk through with the large spread out branches and leaves giving them plenty of shade from the hot sun. As they walked through the forest, Will noticed something that made him stop which caught Erin and Kemper's attention.
"What is it?" Erin asked.
"I'm not sure." Will said as he walked over to go investigate.
"Dude! The sheriff's house is that way." Kemper pointed in the opposite direction. He sighed in exhaustion but when he saw Erin followed the agent he followed to. Will made it to what he saw, and it was a collections of suitcases, backpacks, clothing, and other miscellaneous items all thrown together along with long ropes of shoes hanging from trees. "What the hell is all this stuff?"
Erin looked through the stuff and besides the clothes and suitcases, she saw some old hair bands, combs, and glasses and judging by all the stuff it belonged to a lot of people. That's when she found a photo hidden by a boot of a family and recognize the girl in it as the dead girl in their van.
"Will!" Erin shouted his name and got him to come over so she could show him. "It's the dead girl."
"Yeah, that's her and I just found out she and her family went missing a month ago." Will told them. "Something's fishing going on around here and I think it has to do with the house we're heading to."
"So, what do we do?" Kemper asked as Will thought it over.
"Let's see what this sheriff has to say." Will suggested as they continued on to the house that the boy told them about. They eventually found it and saw the two-story farmhouse the boy must have been talking about but before Erin could start walking, Will stopped her and pointed to the dirt road leading to the warehouse where four cars were driving up. "Hang on, Erin. Something doesn't feel right."
Will took out his cellphone and removed the bottom cover to reveal a hidden surveillance bug. He took it out and threw it over at the house, ensuring it landed right by the front door. "Nice throw." Kemper commented.
"Thanks." Will activated the surveillance program so they could see and hear everything the bug picked up via his phone. The four cars pulled up as an old man in a wheelchair with legs cut off at the knees rolled out.
"Bout time you idiots showed up!" The old man shouted. "Your grandpa's been starving and Drayton's getting on my nerves."
They saw the same woman and creepy guy from the gas station come out of the fourth car with various men and women get out of the other cars, some of them carrying shotguns. "Oh, relax Monty. He'll be fine. Besides, tonight it going to be quite the feast."
"How so?" Uncle Monty asked.
"Because we got six of them waiting for us. Mama sent them to the old sawmill and uncle Charlie is there to bring them here. Oh, boy I'm gonna eat good tonight. And I saw one of their cars, I am keeping that." Nubbins told him.
"Then it's a good thing you brought extra mouths to feed." Verna Carson Sawyer said.
"Did Henrietta and her mama show up yet?" Luda Mae asked.
"There inside. Making more of that stupid tea." Monty told them. "Those kids better be tasting for all the shit I've had to deal with."
"Don't worry, Monty. I saw them all and they look yummy as can be." Luda Mae said as all the Sawyer's and Hewitt extended family walked into the home but stopped when they saw a sheriff's car drive up to the house. Will double-tapped so the bug zoomed in on the sheriff's car and could see Pepper, Morgan, and Andy.
"Oh my god." Erin muttered as the sheriff got out of the car.
"What the hell you idiots waiting around for? Get them out of my damn car and get them ready!" He shouted as Nubbins and some other guys rushed over to drag Erin's friends into the house. They struggled which resulted in them being knocked out before they were taken inside. "Three of them weren't there but their friends said they were on the way here. Never had my dinner come to me for once."
"Ha!" His family members laughed as they walked into the house.
"What the fuck was that?" Erin asked.
"Nothing good. You guys stay here. I'll go and get your friends and don't fucking move unless you see me, or your friends walk out of that house." Will warned him as he stayed raced over to the house but stayed low to avoid being seen. He used his telekinetic sense to get a clear understanding of the house and it was a fucking nightmare. These people were fucking cannibals and the house was decorated as such with bones all over the place, poor hygiene and horrible smells along with trophies of their meals all over the place. Beneath the house in the basement was a makeshift slaughter room where a mountain of a man had Andy and Morgan strapped down on two tables with various butcher implements along with a fucking chainsaw. Those two didn't have much longer until they were killed so he needed to act now. He saw a bottle of moonshine in the windowsill and got an idea.
The Hewitt's and Sawyer's were having a good old time as they readied themselves for their meal with Pepper tied up and gagged to a chair ordained with human bones. There were about 21 family members there for the feast with the lumbering oaf in the basement making it 22. They were all about to enjoy their first glass of moonshine when they heard some glass break from outside. Sheriff Hoyt or actually Charlie Hewitt walked over to the front door to see someone had busted his windshield.
"What the fuck?!" He walked out and made his way over to his car only to get grabbed from behind and have his neck snapped by Will. He dropped the body to the ground and took his revolver and pocket lighter before grabbing the shotgun from the sheriff's car and the extra shells. He tore off a piece of his sleeve and tied it to the moonshine bottle. He bashed the window of another car and lit the makeshift Molotov cocktail before throwing it inside the car, setting it ablaze.
The sound of more glass breaking and the glare of fire from outside sent 10 of the Sawyer and Hewitt men outside where they saw a car on fire. And more specifically, Nubbins car.
"My car!" Nubbins shouted only for Will to step out from around the house and blow his head off with the revolver. He then fired five more shots and killed five more of the men before using the shotgun and shooting the remaining four. Will dropped the revolver as he walked over the dead bodies of the cannibals and saw one Sawyer man still alive with a massive chunk taken out of his side so Will ended him there with another shotgun shell to the chest.
He reloaded and walked into the house where he immediately shot Drayton Sawyer in the groin before turning and shooting at two Sawyer men who rushed down the stairs. He stained the stairs and walls with blood before shooting a Sawyer woman who tried to shoot him, but she died and fell onto the crouch.
"ARGH! YOU SON OF A BITCH! YOU BLASTED MY BALLS OFF!" Drayton Sawyer shouted only for Will to blow his head off with another blast from the shotgun. He then shot Monty who was blasted off his wheelchair before he aimed the shotgun on Grandpa Sawyer. The old man was dressed in a black suit, was old, balding, and had a mallet in one hand and was in a wheelchair as well. He didn't seem at all that threatening but likely just as responsible for everything these cannibal family did and ate his fill, so he blasted the old man in the chest, ending the Sawyer patriarch. He aimed his gun at Luda Mae, Henrietta and her mom along with Verna Carson Sawyer.
"Don't move!" Will warned them as he kept his shotgun trained on them. He walked forward and used a table knife to cut Pepper free who instantly got behind him. He noticed the baby boy in Henrietta's arms and recognized him as the boy from the family photo of the hitchhiker girl Erin and her friends found. "Put the baby on the table."
Henrietta held the baby closer only for Will to cock the shotgun as a warning. "She's not yours. You stole her from her family after you fucking ate them. Put him down."
"You just walked into the wrong fucking house." Luda Mae warned as they heard a lot of loud thumping that was getting close.
"Look out!" Pepper shouted as a large mountain of a man came in with a chainsaw. He pushed Pepper back as the man brought the chainsaw down to cleave Will in two, but he used the shotgun to stop it momentarily before delivering a swift kick to his groin and then another push kick that knocked him back.
Will tossed the broken shotgun on the ground and got his first good look at the chainsaw cannibal. He was large and wearing dirty clothes with a bloody and stained smock but the most disturbing factor besides his clothes and the chainsaw was what he had on his face. It was a mask made from a human face and sewed in various places…like a Leatherface.
Leatherface gave out a roar and reared his chainsaw in the air only for Will to give him a look and use his HK pistol to blast him in each leg with a bullet before finishing it off with two more bullets to the chest that sent him sprawled onto the floor.
There was a moment of stunned silence at the anticlimactic end to what just happened before Will aimed his pistol at the woman. "I'm not gonna ask again." Will warned as Henrietta put the baby on the table where Pepper took him and held him close to protect him. "Look away. You don't want to see this."
Pepper did and heard four more gunshots along with various loud thumps that hit the ground. "Come on, let's get your friends." Will led her to the far wall where he moved a steel door to show the staircase that led to the basement. He walked down first into the flooded basement and was instantly hit with a horrid smell and sight. Various body parts, eyes, heads, and such were hung up like meat to dry or pickle in chairs. He saw Andy strapped to a table and Morgan impaled on a meat hook and suspended off the ground. "Jesus Christ."
Will shot off the binds that kept Andy strapped down before moving over to check on Morgan. Despite being impaled through with a meat hook, it wasn't through anything vital so he would live with some help. "Andy, give me some help."
Andy came over as Will got up on the table and removed the hook from the chain in the ceiling. "Just take it out." Morgan told him.
"No, I take it out here and you could bleed to death. Don't worry, it's not through anything vital." Will helped Morgan onto the ground as Andy got on his other side to help carry him. "Come on, let's get out of here."
They walked up the stairs of the basement as Andy helped Will carry Morgan up the stairs and move through the house with Pepper following them and holding the baby close. They walked past the dead cannibals and made it out of the house before stopping at one of the cars. Erin and Kemper raced out from the woods and rushed over to check on everyone and despite the fact that Morgan had a hook in his back, they would be all right. Some therapy but they'd be fine. Will grabbed ahold of the hook as Morgan bit down on a stick to muffle his scream before it was yanked out and his wound covered with Kemper's button up.
That's when they heard some loud thumping and the roar of a chainsaw engine coming from the house. They turned and saw Leatherface race outside the house and hellbent on killing them. Erin and her friends screamed in fright only for Will to take out his pistol and fire four bullets center mass that sent Leatherface onto his back yet again. They breathed a sigh of relief only to see Leatherface twitch and slowly get back to his feet and revved up his chainsaw once again.
"For fucks sake! Just die already!" Will walked forward and emptied the remaining eight bullets into Leatherface's chest and head which resulted in him dropping the chainsaw and falling to the ground once again. To make sure he stayed dead, Will grabbed the chainsaw and revved it up before taking Leatherface's head off. It was a bloody mess but that ended it then and there. He had Edi call the State Police and local FBI because they had a lot of missing person cases that were about to be solved.
End of chapter 8
1). Think Crystal's human clothes when she arrives on Earth on the Inhuman show.
I hope you guys liked the chapter. Sorry it took a while, but I'll admit this one kind of got away from me as I updated my other stories. But I'll make sure this one stays active and the updates keep coming. Hoped you guys liked the chapter, just a little filler with Will handling a case for his buddy Grant and taking out some cannibals in Texas. He's going to be doing a lot more cases like those so if you guys ideas, just let me know. The Texas Chainsaw was a mix up of the original and the remake one, for those that were curious.
Next chapter, Will's birthday gets interrupted by a mission. Then another mission. He just can't catch a break. Then Christmas comes along only to deal with the Mandarin and Tony's PTSD. Until then!
