Here is Chapter 11 of the Perfect One. His experience with the Hellfire Club and introduction to Mutants have definitely opened up Will's world to how weird it really is. As more and more curtains get pulled back, he learns more and more. Fury introduces him to another organization outside of SHIELD and meets someone his mother knew. Then, he gets called in for an 0-8-4 and meets an old friend and his team. Enjoy!
Again, thanks to War Sage, Masamune X23, JhotoLoraxius and all the other people who PM me with ideas for my stories. Thank you, guys. They help a lot.
The Perfect One: Reunited and it feels so…meh.
April 2013: Triskelion SHIELD Headquarters, Washington DC
After stopping the mutant team of mercenaries at the Vault, making sure Nitro stayed in his cell, putting the Juggernaut back under stasis, and arresting Phillips and his conspirators from the Hellfire Club, SHIELD was given another big win. They uncovered a lot of skeletons in Phillips closet about a lot of the group's plans that provided useful intel for SHIELD, the CIA, the FBI, Homeland Security, Interpol, and many government agencies whose countries wanted to distance themselves from the political hotbed of being associated with Phillips and his organization. When they uncovered the AIM connection, suffice to say they were doing damage control.
While it seemed clean cut on the outside, there were four people who weren't convinced. Those four? Director Fury, Deputy Director Hill, Professor Xavier, and the agent who started everything, Will. His feeling about being a pawn in someone else's machinations never went away and given how he didn't see any reports about the arrest of Sebastian Shaw, Selene Gallio, or Emma Frost then he figured out who was the chess master, pardon the pun. The Vault was being repaired and retrofitted to be better equipped in case of another attack and the mutants who were arrested were taken to various detainment facilities with many of them already catalogued in the Mutant Index. The question is their tie to the Essex Corporation. That was one name that kept coming up when he interrogated the Hellfire Club members.
The Essex Corporation was a bio-engineering genetics company that was, by their moniker building a better you for a better tomorrow, specialized in medicine and bio-medical treatments. There were past incidents with the FDA regarding some of their genetic therapy experiments straight out of GATTACA but other than that they were clean. Clearly that wasn't the case and it didn't help the fact that many of the mutants who were part of the team that attacked the vault had ties to the Essex Corporation as former employees or working closely with the research teams as contractors. Something was going on with the Essex Corporation and it could possibly involve mutants for hire. Their connection to the Hellfire Club and the mutants who attacked put them on SHIELD and Will's radar, and he would be working on a file on them only he was called in to Fury's office at the Triskelion when Fury returned to the states.
He had been sitting outside of Fury's office for an hour, dressed in his casual wear which again drew odd looks from the other SHIELD agents who were dressed in suits or business wear. That was one SHIELD regulation that Will tended to ignore, and he didn't think anyone really gave a crap if he wore a suit or stuck to his jeans and hoodie. His phone got a ping and it was a text from his cousin Kim telling him that she got the internship with the STARK Relief foundation. He was glad for her and she was excited to help. Her experience in Paris had done a lot to change her outlook in life but she recovered, and it made her stronger, now wanting to use her second chance to help people. She even switched her college major to Human Rights with a minor in economics. She was hopeful for her future.
He then got some alerts on the group text with his friends and they were doing fine. He wasn't able to hang out with them as much as he would like to because of work but he kept in touch. Grant took up Will's offer and got a job working private security for a STARK Industries subsidiary in Manhattan. It wasn't Avengers tower, just another STARK Industries warehouse/lab in the city which paid better than his last job and Daisy was able to keep her job at NYU. Riley was still working for Boeing and was close to getting his pilot's license. Keith Ramsay was working on Wall Street after getting his PHD in economics, Alex Summers got his real estate license and was busy being a realtor, Bobby Drake was working at his dad's accounting firm, and James Proudstar was overseas doing his second tour in the Marines. He was alive and everyone wished him well and sent him letters and gifts to keep him going. Angel Salvadore was a nurse at a hospital, Clarice Fong was getting her master's in economics, and Tabitha Jones was working as a dancer and trying to make it on Broadway or TV.
The door then opened and Deputy Director Hill motioned him inside so he got up and followed. Fury was sitting at his desk as per usual but it was just him so he must have been taking to Hill the entire time or video conferenced other people in. Hill left the room after Will walked in so it was just him and Fury.
"Agent Detmer, well done on the situation at the Vault. Things could have gotten out of hand very quickly." Fury said to him in his usual baritone, stoic voice and while it didn't indicate any emotion Will had a feeling he meant it.
"Thank you, sir." Will replied. "But with the Hellfire Club taken out of the equation there still leaves variables out in play. Sebastian Shaw, Selene Gallio and Emma Frost are unaccounted for and are probably using the opportunity to gather what followers and influence they have. With their competition out of the way, they're gonna be an issue."
"I'm aware of that which is why we need to be prepared. Given your abilities, you're our best offensive measure against groups like the Hellfire club or whatever Shaw is going to rename it as. You'll be working closely with Professor Xavier as a liaison between the X-men and SHIELD. When more mutant threats come up, we'll need to be ready." Fury told him, getting up from his desk and walking to the window to look outside at Washington DC.
"You think things are gonna escalate?" Will wondered.
"I know they will. And SHIELD will need to be ready." Fury told him.
"All of this is sort of beyond my boundaries as a Level-7 agent unless I'm assuming you've made an exception." Will pointed out.
"No exception. Welcome to Level-8, Mr. Detmer. Your world is about to get a lot weirder." Fury told him. "No other agent your age has ever advanced this quickly through the ranks of SHIELD, Mr. Detmer. Ever. It'll be more important than ever to make sure that your abilities and activities as Aegis remain as distant from your work at this level as possible unless you want the world Security Council breathing down your neck."
"You really can count the number of people you trust on one hand, can't you sir?" He asked.
"And I'm not afraid to cut off some fingers." Fury walked over so the two were standing across from one another. "You managed to survive an encounter with a team of mutant mercenaries who were able to break into a highly advanced and secured SHIELD facility and took down some of our best agents. Not only that, but you managed to defeat the Juggernaut when it took the combined forces of Xavier's senior X-men to take him down last time. And you did it in a minute."
"Technically 52 seconds but your point, sir?" Will asked.
"Times are changing, Agent Detmer. The most SHIELD had to worry about a few years ago was a billionaire in a flying metal suit and the occasional green Hulk sightings. The Battle of New York was the end of the old world. Welcome to the new one and you've already gotten a taste of it. Our enemies have access to secrets, tech, and formulas they're not ready for and the world gets caught in the middle. When the odds are stacked against us, I need to know that you're ready to do what needs to be done." Fury said to him.
Will took a moment to absorb all that before standing up straight at attention. "I'm ready to do whatever it takes to keep the planet safe, sir. You can count on that."
Fury looked at Will and nodded. "Good. Your work with SHIELD is going to pick up. There are a lot of threats out there that you will need to be ready to stop but being a Level-8 agent also comes with the ability to be privy to information that was classified. One thing in particular, I think you'll appreciate."
Will heard the door open and in walked Deputy Director Hill and a guest and honestly when he saw who it was, he felt time sort of freeze. In walked Phil Coulson, Level-8 SHIELD agent who helped train Will and recruit him over 3 years ago. He was a well-known SHIELD agent who had been with the agency for decades and earned a well-founded reputation as a trustworthy and loyal agent who believed in what the organization stood for. He lost his life on the Helicarrier when Loki was broken from containment before the Battle of New York or at least that's what Fury told everyone. But there Coulson was and he walked and moved just like he remembered.
"Hello, Will. It's good to see you again." Coulson said. Will looked him over and he sounded exactly like he remembered. So, what does Will do in this kind of situation? He pulled out his HK pistol and aimed it right at Coulson's forehead, ready to pull the trigger. "I figured you'd react like this."
"Someone better tell me what's going on before I pull the trigger." Will warned them.
"You can lower the gun, Agent Detmer, it's really Coulson." Fury assured him. "We faked his death on the helicarrier to motivate the rest of the team to band together against Loki."
"The death of an ally is an effective team builder." Hill added.
"Plus, it wasn't that much of a stretch. I stopped breathing for about 40 seconds." Coulson told Will.
"8 seconds. It gets longer every time you tell the story." Hill pointed out.
"Yeah, well you get shanked by the Asgardian Mussolini and you can tell it your way. I was looking at the big white light and it felt like a lot longer than 8 seconds." Coulson told her. Will's telepathy picked up that they were telling the truth but that didn't mean he was ok with any of this. "You could probably ready our minds and you probably already have you know we're telling the truth but this is a lot to take so take as long as you need. Motivating you and the Avengers were what we needed to stop Loki and the Chitauri. I got stitched up and some R&R in a grass shack in Tahiti. Travis McGee novels, Mai Tais, and physical therapists whose knowledge of the English Language was limited. But it was a magical place."
"Hill, Coulson, give me a minute alone with Agent Detmer to explain everything." Fury told them and both left. The second they were gone, Fury pressed a few buttons on his desk to lock his office down and prevent anyone or anything from listening in. "I know you have a lot of questions."
"That's an understatement, Director. What the hell is going on?" Will asked him, visibly and emotionally upset and unsure what the hell was going on.
"A lot, Mr. Detmer." Fury walked over to a wall and removed a picture frame where a safe was hidden. After inputting a code, scanning his thumbprint and his retinal scan the safe was unlocked and Fury retrieved what looked like a portable DVD player and a disk. "What I'm about to show you is a level-10 classified file. You will not repeat what you see or hear to anyone ever again and the only reason I'm showing you this is because I have no other choice."
Fury inserted the disk and turned the player around. It read, Classified Level 10 communication. T.A.H.I.T.I. Project Supervisor to Director Fury Final Report. Fury hit the play button and Coulson's face appeared on a video briefing. "Good morning, Director Fury. I regret to inform you that I'm handing in my resignation. I know you brought me on to Project T.A.H.I.T.I because you trusted my judgment, and it's that judgment that's telling me I can no longer in good conscience let the testing continue. I understand you started the program to potentially save a mortally wounded Avenger, but the side effects are too extreme. We had initial success with the regenerative properties of the Guest-Host tissue, but after the initial physical recovery, the subjects began to deteriorate mentally, displaying hypergraphia, aphasia, catatonia, or just complete psychosis. We don't know if it was the biology at play or simply the awareness of what was gone, but the only course of action that showed any promise of stemming these side effects was memory replacement—erasing completely the awareness of what they'd been through. And even those results were very inconsistent. To be clear, I'm recommending the termination of Project T.A.H.I.T.I. Under no circumstances should these procedures or drugs be administered to anyone ever. The cost is far too great. Thank you, sir."
The video ended after that with the disc and video player short-circuiting and smoke coming from the crevices, indicating that both the disc and player were destroyed. Most likely as a failsafe. Hearing all of that, Will wasn't sure what to make of it but he quickly figured out what Fury did and why he showed it to him. "What did you do, Director?" Will asked him.
"What I felt was necessary and I'm damn glad I did it too." Fury replied. "You know Coulson as good as anyone else, Will and you know he's a true believer in what SHIELD stands for. And like you, he's the heart of SHIELD. So, I did everything I could to bring him back."
"You used this Project T.A.H.I.T.I. to bring Coulson back even though he told you about the risks." Will stated. "And he doesn't know anything. You wiped his mind. How could you do that?!"
Fury sat in his chair and while his face was stoic as per usual, his demeanor did shift to show that the knowledge of what he did impacted him. "The trauma that Coulson endured during the procedure was…immense. Memory replacement was the only course to help bring Coulson back to the man he once was so that's what I had done. A memory of a beautiful island and a vacation while we erased everything about Project T.A.H.I.T.I. Coulson doesn't know anything about it."
"This is so messed up." Will held onto the desk to steady himself and took a deep breath. "Why tell me any of this?"
"Because I knew that the second you were alone with Coulson, you'd go into his mind to figure out what happened and you'd figure out what I had done. So, I decided to go about this another way." Fury told him only for Will to look at him.
"And what's to stop me from going to Coulson right now and telling him the truth? Better yet, showing him."
"You know the human brain better than anyone, Agent Detmer. You can repair it and you can break it. What would telling Coulson the truth risk?" Fury asked him. Will looked at Fury and took a deep breath before answering.
"A possible complete mental breakdown."
"And the side effects of Project T.A.H.I.T.I. I know you don't approve of what I did Agent Detmer but I stand by my decision." Fury assured him. "That being said, there's a reason I told you the truth. You know Coulson better than most people here at SHIELD. I want you to watch over him for any signs of deterioration and be there for him. Help him only like you can and make sure that Coulson is Coulson. I trust in what Project T.A.H.I.T.I was able to do and I know Coulson is strong but I'm not naïve to think he won't find out the truth. When that happens, help him."
"Sir, you're asking me to not only lie but spy one someone I consider practically family." Will said, his voice breaking to show how devastated that he was being asked to do this. "Sir, I can handle an assassination mission, going undercover, or throwing me behind enemy lines to take down a dictatorship gone rogue. Hell, the next time an alien species tries to invade Earth I will be on the front lines to throw them back but please don't ask me to do this."
"I'm sorry, Agent Detmer but we both know that you are the best person suited to making sure Coulson stays safe. You know him better than most people, you trained with him, he trusts you and your telepathy will be able to help you should the worst come to fruition. I'm ordering you to watch over him and unless Coulson shows signs or figures out the truth himself, you are not to repeat a word of this conversation to anyone." Fury ordered.
Will drop his head in defeat as he couldn't have been asked a tougher assignment. He could handle an assassination mission, going undercover or an infiltration mission. Those were straight forward like a bullet. From point A to point B and if there are obstacles, he adjusts but he's never had an issue with anything that's come up on an assignment. Sure, he's done some pretty bad things but it comes with the job and he's made his peace with that. But he always knew where he stood, morally at least. Taking out bad guys to keep people safe.
But this? Being told to spy on and lie to someone he looked at like family. It was the hardest thing he's been asked to do since he joined SHIELD and despite everything he could think of it was the least bad option. Watching over Coulson to make sure he was ok was a smart idea but the idea of lying to him and putting on a fake smile when he knew the truth? That made his stomach turn and his heart beat weird. Call him a softie but he preferred not lying to those he called friends. He could handle a lot at SHIELD and he was a pretty good spy but that was lying to the bad guys. This was lying to his friends.
Still…if he could make sure Coulson was safe…then fine. And when Coulson finds out the truth, he's throwing Fury under the bus hard. After thinking it over in his head, he gave Fury a small nod in response. "Yes, sir but constantly watching him is going to draw attention."
"Coulson has requisitioned a mobile command unit and will be putting together a team. Having another Level-8 agent assigned to him will draw up some red flags, yes so, I've already planned to have someone else watching him 24/7 when you can't. You will not know who this agent is but they know Coulson as well as you do and want what's best for him. You have my assurance on that. If your recalled for another mission or something comes up, they'll be able to monitor him while you're busy but other than that, you are to watch over him. Am I clear?" Fury asked and Will nodded in response. "I know I'm asking a lot of you, Agent Detmer but I wouldn't ask you to do this unless I was sure you could handle it and if I didn't believe in what you were doing. He's still the same Coulson you know from before…just act like nothing's changed."
"Hopefully, my training's made me a convincing liar." He muttered as he walked over to the door to leave but stopped. "Director Fury, one question and permission to speak freely sir?"
"What is it?" Fury asked him.
"Sir…I know I've only been here for three years. There are hundreds of agents who have seniority over me and you've dedicated a good part of your life to SHIELD and I'm not doubting or contradicting your service or what you've done at all." Will assured him. "But wiping Coulson's memory and asking the people who care about him to lie to his face? At what point is there no longer a line to cross?"
Fury took a moment to process the question before standing up to look at the SHIELD logo behind his desk so Will couldn't see his face. "You draw the line wherever you need it, Agent Detmer. We get our hands dirty and the rest of the world stays clean, that's our mission. At the end of the day…someone has to make the enemy scared of the dark."
"Roger that, sir." He replied, stepping out of Fury's office into the waiting area. Seeing it was just him, he took a moment to really let himself feel what just happened. He punched three holes in the wall and picked up a nearby chair which he promptly smashed against the ground and broke into pieces. "FUCK!"
Will stood there after his little anger venting and felt a little better but that's it. He fixed his shirt and hair before walking out of the waiting area and into the hallway. Taking a deep breath to recompose himself, he walked down the hallway until he turned the corner where he saw Hill and Coulson talking while drinking coffee.
"You and Fury were talking for quite a while. Everything ok?" Coulson wondered. Hill raised her eyebrows and gave Will a subtle look. With Hill being Fury's number two, it made sense that she knew the truth as well. Her look…it essentially said, keep up appearances.
"Yeah, everything's fine. Just uh…" Will stuttered a bit, trying to find the right words and a part of him was tempted to just blurt out the truth. "…kind of kicking myself that I didn't give you enough credit, Coulson. I knew one spear stab wouldn't take you out."
"To be fair, it was an alien spear so you're forgiven." Coulson assured him, giving Will his signature smirk.
"Just for my own piece of mind to make sure it's really you, here's one question I know only Coulson would know the answer to." Will said to him. "What was the nickname Audrey gave you when we had dinner in Portland? The nickname you swore me never to put into a SHIELD report or repeat to anyone?"
"I'd be comfortable if I didn't respond." Coulson pointed out.
"Oh, I don't know, Coulson. I'm rather curious." Hill interjected.
"You either answer or I pull my gun out again." Will told him.
Coulson sighed in defeat, knowing there was no way to escape this one. "She called me Philly-bear."
"Heh-heh…" Hill chuckled as she sipped her coffee and Will chuckled.
"Yeah, that's you." Will said.
"Glad we could clear that up." Coulson pointed out when Will hugged him. He was caught off guard before he smiled and hugged back. "It's good to see you again, Will."
"God, I just can't believe it." He said to him. "Do the others know?"
"Clint does since he's level 7 but the others aren't cleared to know." Hill told him.
"Well, I'm just glad to have you back Coulson. We need to catch up. Personally, I could use something to eat so how about we catch up over lunch. I'm got some serious stories to tell you." Will put his arm around Coulson's shoulder and walked with him out of the base. He spared a glance back at Hill who gave him a nod. While he hated having to keep this a secret from Coulson…he was glad to have him back.
Line Break xxxxx
April 2013
Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters, Westchester, New York
Getting to hang out with Coulson again was a breath of fresh air. Fury was right that Coulson was still Coulson but Will was fooling himself if he didn't admit that having to lie to him felt wrong. It was something he was going to be wrestling with from here on out and he was just hoping and praying for the day when Coulson starts to suspect something. When that happens, he plans on telling him everything he knows. Still, it was nice hanging out with Coulson again.
The preparations for Coulson's team and mobile command center were still being organized but would likely be ready in a few weeks. Coulson was using that time to begin the recruitment process for his team. He was already eyeing a young engineering/bio-chem duo who had a lot of potential and then was going to look for a specialist. Like he and Fury agreed, a newly minted Level-8 agent being assigned to Coulson's team would look odd. He'd be the same level as Coulson so realistically he'd be going on tougher missions or organizing missions himself and taking on a more of a leadership role like Agent Hand. Essentially, being an agent watching over everything from the safety of the Triskelion.
Yeah, but that wasn't his style.
He would need to figure out a way to tag along with Coulson and make it seem natural and less obvious. Being a Special Operations, Tactics, and Defense Specialist who specialized in odd or dangerous cases, popping in every now and then on Coulson and his team for intel or having them help him wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities. At the moment, Coulson was at the Triskelion so he wasn't needed to watch over him. That allowed him to handle some things on his own that needed to do. Will's Chevrolet Chevelle drove up the driveway to Xavier's institute, not even having to stop at the gate which was buzzed open when he arrived. The Professor probably told someone that he was coming up the driveway. He drove up to the Institute and found a place to park before getting out. Some students passed by on their way to join their friends down by the pool. Will walked into the manor where he saw some students passing by on their way to do whatever it is they were doing. Going to the kitchen or meeting up with their friends.
"I'm in my study in the west wing." Will heard in his head so he walked through the manor until he found himself at the study. Professor Xavier was sitting at his desk and going through some paperwork or student assignments. "Hello, Agent Detmer."
"Please, Will. I've never been one for titles." He assured him. "I hope I didn't catch you at a bad time."
"No, just finishing up some paperwork. The summer is almost here so many of my students will be going back to their families for summer break." Professor Xavier told him as Will looked out the window and saw some students hanging out in the garden. "What brings you by?"
"You don't know? I figured you'd have read my mind the second you detected I was close?" He wondered only for Xavier to smirk.
"A part of me was tempted but like yourself, I do respect an individual's privacy and only use my powers when necessary." Xavier pointed out. "And I'm sure you know that your mind is particularly well guarded against telepathy."
"I'm just unique that way. And something I've done after meeting Frost and her sisters." He joked. "Fury probably already told you but he promoted me to be the direct SHIELD Liaison with the institute and the X-men. He's worried that things are gonna start to escalate."
"And you?" Xavier wondered.
"Escalation is kind of inevitable at this point. Considering that Shaw and his associates weren't even mentioned when SHIELD took down the Hellfire club, they've taken over what remains. Considering what SHIELD thought they were up to before; I'm worried what the new leadership has planned. Not to mention that the Hellfire club planned this out to exploit mutants for whoever's left of AIM. Mutants won't be able to live in the shadows forever and I just found out about them a week ago. I'm playing catch up here." Will stated.
"I imagine this must be a lot." Xavier stated, moving his wheelchair from around his desk as the two walked down the hall together. "Mutants have always been looked at with confusion and fear. Just a year ago, mankind learned that we were not alone in the universe."
"That really threw a lot of religious groups for a loop. Some rather violently. A lot happens when someone's fundamental belief is challenged like that." Will pointed out and Charles agreed. "Even though people look at the Avengers as heroes, there's a very vocal minority that aren't as happy we're around. I hate to imagine what would happen if they found out about Mutants. But I promise you that as long as I'm around, the X-men and everyone here is under my protection. And by that extension, the Avengers as well."
"Thank you, Will. I appreciate that. Friends are hard to find now these days and should you need anything, our doors are always open." Xavier told him as the kept walking. "I hope this doesn't mean you plan on recruiting some of my students to be Avengers."
"We're not looking for new members at this time. The X-men are good as they are. Professor, I was going over the mutant files I have access to and I was wondering if I could ask you about something. Or more accurately, someone. Eric Lehnsherr." Will said and Charles took a deep breath. "In the file, he's one of mutants that SHIELD has under a heavy threat level and surveillance but it also mentioned you two knew each other before. What happened?"
"When I was a boy, I discovered I had the power to control people's minds, make them think or do whatever I wanted. At first, I thought was going crazy hearing all the voices in my head but then I soon discovered that the voices belonged to the people I happen to be nearby. Over time, I learned to control my power and, in my youth, it helped me tremendously. I imagine your telepathy has come in handy on your missions and assignments." Xavier pointed out.
"They have and I'll admit that I've used them to hurt the bad guys but never on an innocent person." Will admitted.
"Then you have more restraint than most mutants when they first develop their powers. As I told you before, there are many powerful mutants out there and many of them do not share my respect for mankind. When I was 17, I met a young man named Eric Lehnsherr. He too had an unusual power. He could create magnetic fields and control metal. He was passionate, strong, and a good friend. We started this school together and helped many mutants who began to emerge including some of the original members of the X-men like Hank and Piotr but Eric lived a troubled life. He lost his family during the Holocaust." Xavier told him.
"Jesus…" Will muttered.
"Over time, he became bitter and his view on mankind began to change. Believing that humanity would never accept us, he grew angry and vengeful. He became Magneto. In 2000, before Eric left the institute, we worked with Fury to stop a large slavery operation that led us to its epicenter on the island of Genosha. It's a small island off the east coast of Africa and located to the northeast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. It was quickly becoming a thriving and rich country but the government made its profit off using mutants as a slave labor." Xavier explained and Will could pick up the hints of sadness, pain, and all the negative emotions that came from discovering something like that. It must have been really bad. "That was the final straw for Eric and he quickly toppled the Genoshian regime, killed those in power and freed the captured mutants. SHIELD and I helped those mutants who wanted it but many stayed with Eric who declared himself the new leader of Genosha. Under his rule, no mutant would ever be mistreated or subjugated by humans."
"That had to be a political nightmare and a headache for Fury." Will stated.
"It was. Eric was ready to defend the mutants against anyone, any organization or any country that tried to take it back. Fury and the director at the time relented and granted Eric control over Genosha on the grounds of peace. He could care for the mutants there and any who came to the island and SHIELD would keep the rest of the world away." Xavier explained as they got onto the elevator and took it down to the lower floors. "For the past decade, Eric and the island of Genosha has cared for mutants and many who have been victimized by society. I imagine many would like nothing more than to live in peace but many don't share our opinion on mankind and would like nothing more than violence or war."
"That's the last thing we need. I love that Fury throws me in the deep end." Will commented as they exited the elevator and walked through the halls of the lower levels of the mansion. Charles was leading them to Hank's laboratory. "Do you think Magneto would start a war?"
"I'd like to believe that he wouldn't but it's been a long time since I've seen him. And with how things are going in the world, SHIELD advancing and being officially presented to the world, the government's response to an alien invasion and the Avengers…he might see war coming as inevitable." Xavier told him.
"Then we do whatever we can to prevent that from happening and make sure everyone, mutant or not stays safe." Will said and Xavier nodded just as they entered Hank's lab. Dr. McCoy was hanging upside from the ceiling using his feet. He had a lab coat on and his glasses perched up on his nose. How that was possible while he was upside down is a good question. "You comfortable up there, Doctor McCoy?"
"Quite." Hank dropped down and landed with a soft thud. "It's rather second nature at this point and excellent for when I need to think. It's good to see you again, agent."
"Just Will, please. You too, Dr. McCoy." Will shook his hand. "I stopped by the institute to talk to the Professor. I've been made the X-men's official SHIELD Liaison so we'll be seeing each other more often. Hopefully, under good circumstances."
"Agreed. I'm actually glad you are here. If it would be possible, I would like to run some additional brain scans for my research. Your brain is fascinating and your powers are incredible. I imagine you'd give Charles a run for his money if you needed to and seeing as how you were able to stop the Juggernaut, you are the most powerful telekinetic we've ever experienced yet you're not a mutant?" Hank wondered.
"I'm complicated and so long as we promise that whatever we discuss won't leave this room then I'd be happy to explain." Will said both Hank and Charles agreed. He took another look at the lab and it honestly reminded him of Bruce's lab back at the tower. "We should really get you to see Avengers Tower, Dr. McCoy. I imagine you and Dr. Banner would become fast friends. Maybe we could set it up as a field trip for the institute? The Avengers meet the X-men. Heh, sounds like a comic book."
"A meeting I'm sure many of my students would enjoy but can I ask why?" Charles wondered.
"Call it my paranoia but I think our two groups will be able to do a lot together when something bad happens. Besides, superhero groups should stick together." Will explained and Charles agreed. Hopefully, things didn't turn into a civil war because the Avengers against the X-men would be a battle that no one would win.
He spent some more time at the institute talking with Charles and Hank and getting to know them and mutants better. Most of the team were back at college when we went to visit but he was able to speak with Piotr, Warren, and Logan and get a better feel for the X-men. With summer coming up soon, maybe that'd be a better chance to see the younger team in action in the Danger Room and see how they do against him? Or he would take them to the Tower. Expanding his circle of friends and allies made sense. A storm was coming and all it would take is one incident and things would escalate.
May 2013
Florida
After helping a SHIELD mission in Canada, Will was in Florida. Being a Level-8 agent, he managed to claim a SHIELD quinjet as his personal transport so he wouldn't have to go to an airfield and request a flight to wherever he needed to go. This way, he could fly himself without worry and he was qualified to fly. Plus, he managed to gut the interior of the quinjet and remove the seats so he could fit his Chevrolet Chevelle and his motorcycle so he always had his vehicles. And he put up a small little cubby area for Goose so they could travel together and he would be comfortable.
At the moment, he was driving down a highway on his motorcycle in his casual clothing with his jacket tied up around his waist so he was just in his button-up. He was in Florida in May and for some reason the day he showed it was ungodly humid. Having his head stuck in his helmet did little to help his sweating and it was black so that didn't help either. At least riding his motorcycle there was a nice breeze that kept him and Goose cool. Goose, of course was riding shotgun in the motorcycle's front basket with his little goggles and scarf wrapped around his neck. Goose liked riding on the bike and the goggles and scarf made him look cute and funny.
He was in Florida because Fury wanted him to visit a special facility that was built out in an isolated part of the state with nothing but a long stretch of highway and wetlands for miles. He drove down the highway and eventually exited onto a long stretch of road that led to a huge facility and compound. There was a massive hangar with various jets, planes, and shuttles around but scattered around were various space shuttle platforms for manned launches into space. Next to the hangar were various secured buildings that acted as the control center, operations building, and probably living quarters for those who resided on the base. This was headquarters for SWORD or the Sentient World Observation and Response Division. They were an American extra-governmental agency that focused on manned missions and extraterrestrial operations and exploration. Essentially, a more advanced and armed version of NASA. Granted, they didn't have any info on the Chitauri, Asgardians and couldn't even find the Inhuman City of Attilan on the moon so it was dubious if they were actually good at their job. But they did advance space travel and the planet's satellite warning system better than NASA was able to do.
He arrived in the parking lot of the main operations building and parked it in an empty space where he removed his helmet and wiped his forehead of sweat. He looked at the SWORD building and noticed it shared some resemblance to the Triskelion in DC and the Hub. Guess when you've seen one government building then you've seen them all. SWORD was founded in the late 90s and could be looked at as a sort of interstellar version of SHIELD but probably not as capable. Granted, that was just his opinion. SHIELD enforced global security and safety while SWORD focused on space traversal and exploration. And the information they were able to get from their missions helped SHIELD do their job. The reason Fury wanted him to visit was to meet the Director of SWORD. Since he got a Level-8 promotion, meeting with and getting familiar on other organizations, especially one that SHIELD kept close contact with was smart in case something happened. And when Fury was made director over a decade ago, he helped SWORD's expansion and set up so there was a personal stake in him for this.
[Meow] Goose moved his paws to his face and managed to move his goggles off.
"I know, buddy." Will removed Goose's goggles and the scarf around his neck. "I know it's hot. Let's get inside and see if they have some water."
He put his helmet on his bike and made sure his pistol was secure before he and Goose walked into the building where they were immediately met with odd looks and stares. Seeing a normal dressed unfamiliar man and a cat walk into a secured government building would do that but Will noticed that like SHIELD they were all business wearing agents and analysts. Guess government agents like to stick with the business casual look. Will and Goose walked over to the main security desk where they were looked at funny by the guards and agents on duty.
"Can I help you?" The guard asked.
"Agent Will Detmer of SHIELD here for a meeting with Director Rambeau." Will took out his SHIELD badge which he took. The guard checked his computer and after making sure everything was in order, he handed Will his badge back.
"If you'll take a seat, someone will be with you in a moment." The guard told him and Will nodded. He walked over to nearby couch and sat down with Goose jumping up and laying down next to him. Seeing a small water dispenser set up on the table, he quickly filled up two cups and gulped down one before giving the second to Goose. The Flerken lapped up the water with gusto as Will refilled his cup and downed in one gulp, feeling much better with the cool water. He filled up his cup again and held it to his forehead, letting the cold water cool him down from the Florida humidity.
Seeing Goose finish the water cup, he pour the water from his cup into it so Goose could keep drinking. He scratched him on the head as Goose kept drinking, feeling much better with some cold water. Will refilled his cup and gulped it down in one.
"Not use to the Florida humidity. Don't worry. Today is unusually bad." He heard as two African American women walked over and joined them. They were wearing business outfits but had noticeable bumps on their sides so they were carrying guns but they also had SWORD ID badges around their necks. The elder of the two was likely in her late fifties if not her sixties and her long hair tied up in a ponytail. Next to her was someone likely Will's age if not a little older.
"I'll take your word for it." Will stood up so they could see him head to toe. "Agent Will Detmer of SHIELD."
"Director Maria Rambeau of SWORD. This is my daughter, Captain Monica Rambeau." Director Rambeau made the introductions as Will shook both their hands.
"Nice to meet you." Monica said to him.
"Director Fury speaks highly of you. Says you're one of his best agents and I'm to give you the grand tour." Maria said.
"He thinks it's a good idea with my recent promotion." Will stated.
"And he also said that you take after your mother in more ways than one." She commented, looking at him with a sense of fondness even though this was the first time they met. "You have her eyes, you know. Carol's."
"I'll take your word for it." Will replied in a monotone manner. Maria noticed this and decided not to push it when she saw Goose sitting on the couch.
"This little guy I know." Maria knelt down and pet Goose on the head as the Flerken purred and rubbed his head into her hands. "How are you, Goose? I hope you've been behaving."
"Looks like he hasn't changed since I saw him in '95." Monica commented.
"I imagine Flerkens don't age like regular cats." Will pointed out. "Director Rambeau, should we get started?"
"Oh, please call me Maria. Your family, Will." She told him.
"If it's all the same, I'd prefer to stick with Director." He replied.
"Fair enough. Come with me. We'll start the tour." Maria led Will, Goose, and Monica over to the door, scanning her badge which let her in. They passed some plaques and pictures on the wall of notable SWORD agents and members, one of which was of Maria when she founded SWORD. Director Maria Photon Rambeau. They walked down the stark white hallways of the base where they passed security guards, analysts, and military personnel. "SWORD was founded with the focus of interstellar exploration and extraterrestrial operations. As I'm sure you know we're not alone in the universe and now that the rest of the world is aware of that fact, our work has picked up."
"The world keeps turning and we keep busy. You work closely with NASA?" Will wondered.
"We do. We've helped with their Orion projects and travel to the International Space Station but SWORD has taken what NASA has done in the past and made it better." Maria swiped her badge at a set of highly secured double doors and they entered a massive hangar, probably bigger than the ones at the Triskelion. "Since the 2000s, we've launched dozens of manned missions into space and we're the foremost authority on interstellar travel. Our astronaut training programing has advanced our understanding of the universe better then NASA ever did and our personnel are better trained. Monica is one of our best shuttle pilots."
"Well, when you train them more as government agents rather than regular astronauts, I imagine there's going to be a definite shift." Will remarked, looking at the hangar and seeing the large space shuttles being built, repaired, or modified for future missions.
"True, we're not like NASA but our work is important. Half the planets early warning systems are up and monitored by SWORD and tied directly to SHIELD as well. Ever since the Battle of New York, Interstellar exploration and protection is more important than ever and I've been working closely with Director Fury on that since 2010." Maria told him as they walked over to a shuttle being looked after by its repair crew and engineers. Working at the shuttle was a husband and wife duo likely in their mid to late 30s and with them was tall and well-built man who looked like a football linebacker.
"Ben, you better not be messing with my shuttle." Monica told him as the large linebacker like engineer looked at her and chuckled.
"Please, if anything I'm perfecting it. When I'm done with her, she'll fly smoothly and the reason for that is because I'm the one who's gonna be flying her." He replied.
"That'll happen when Dr. Richards actually looks up from his tablet and remembers to shave." Monica joked as Dr. Richards kept his face in his tablet. "See?"
"Reed, we have company." His wife said, taking the pen from his ear and getting him to pay attention.
"Director Rambeau, sorry." He put his tablet away and fixed his hair.
"It's fine, Dr. Richards. I'm just showing someone around the hangar. Will, let me introduce you to one of SWORD's best teams. Dr. Reed Richards, the smartest physicist and engineer we have here." Maria introduced them as Will shook his hand. Dr. Richards was sort of a typical genius scientist but was fairly good-looking. Sort of like Tony and Bruce meshed together without Tony's massive ego and attitude and more like Bruce. Even though he never met him, Will was aware of Dr. Richards reputation and genius. He had read several of his papers when he was in college for various classes. He was SWORD's chief physicist, theoretician, and aero-space engineer with numerous degrees in such varied fields like biochemistry, robotics, communications, engineering, extra-dimensional energy, and a whole list of other fields. While Tony probably etched him out in being a brilliant engineer, Dr. Richards was no slouch and likely outclasses Tony in other fields he wasn't well versed in. (1)
"Pleasure to meet you, Dr. Richards. I've read several of your papers on trans-dimensional energy in college. Very inspiring." Will told him.
"Thank you and it's a pleasure to meet you." Reed said to him with a smile before introducing the woman next to him. "This is Susan, my wife."
"Dr. Susan Storm." She corrected him before shaking Will's hand. Dr. Susan Storm was one of SWORD's best biologists as her specialty was in biochemistry and energy research. She was very beautiful with long blonde hair and it kind of made you wonder how Dr. Richards managed to win her heart. (2)
"Nice to meet you." Will said to her.
"And last but not least, there's Benjamin Grimm. One of SWORD's best astronaut pilots and aeronautical engineers." Maria finished as Ben jumped down from his platform to shake Will's hand. He was large and well-built with a physique and aura around him of a former soldier and he was a former pilot for the air force before being recruited by SWORD by Dr. Richards. The two were longtime friends starting from college and with Susan the three were like a family. (3)
"Nice to meet you." Will shook his hand.
"I may not be as smart as the egg heads but no one can fly like me." Ben stated.
"Except me." Monica told him.
"Yeah, well you're not flying this one. I am." Ben told her. "You can count on that."
"All right, you two can argue about this later. We'll let you get back to work." Maria said as she, Monica and Will left to continue the tour so Reed, Susan and Ben could get back to work on the shuttle.
"Interesting bunch. What are they working on?" Will wondered.
"That's classified but they're working on projects that will be implemented and monitored on the Peak." Maria told him. The Peak was SWORD's orbital space station similar to the International Space Station only this one was a secret and meant for planetary observation and interstellar warning and defense. The only reason he was aware of it was because if was one of the new things he learned as a Level-8 agent.
"Right…" he muttered.
"Come on. There's still more to show you." Maria said as she continued the tour through the SWORD base. They showed him other hangars, the observation center where their army of analysts kept watch on the planet's various array of satellites and early detection system and their training facility. The tour ended at Director Rambeau's office. When they walked in, he noticed all the pictures and plaques set up show casing various awards, accolades, and people she's met. The Presidents of the US was among them but there were plenty of pictures of Maria and Monica growing up. It showed Monica growing up through high school, college and then eventual pilot and agent of SWORD.
"You run a tight ship here, Director Rambeau. I can see why Director Fury wanted me to come here. I hope one of your eventual plans for SWORD would be setting up a planetary defense grid. It could make a lot of potential headaches a lot easier." Will pointed out as Maria took a seat at her desk while he and Monica took the empty chairs across from her. Goose walked over and sat down next to Will.
"If I didn't have to worry about the political nightmare an undertaking like that would encompass then yes. But creating a planetary defense grid would be a massive undertaking unless you or the Avengers plan on helping us." Maria pointed out.
"I never took Fury for one to gossip." Will muttered.
"He didn't. I put it together myself." Maria told him. "Like he told me that you've taken after your mother in many ways so I assumed you were the only Avenger whose identity is still unknown. A lot of people want to figure out who you are."
"And a lot of them have failed." Will remarked.
"That they have but I have to imagine that working with SHIELD and having Fury look after you helps." Maria added. "I've seen some of the battle and what you were able to do along with directing that missile into the wormhole. I think if Carol knew what you did, she'd be really proud of you, Will. If there's anything you want to know about her then my door is always open to you."
Will grimaced a bit but buried that deep in a second before appearing poised and collected. "I'm perfectly fine, Director Rambeau and if it were possible, I'd prefer we keep this strictly professional."
"Is something wrong? Have I done something to offend you?" Maria wondered. "Forgive me for saying but you've been rather…stoic. I figured you'd be excited to be here. I mean, you're practically family.
"Will all due respect, Director Rambeau I just met you today. You and your daughter have been wonderful hosts but I don't know you or your daughter and the only reason I came here is because of the new information I received with my promotion. And Director Fury vouches for you. The fact that you know who I am is a little complicated but he trusts you to not do anything with that information." Will explained. "That's it. Whoever you were to Carol Danvers means nothing to me."
Monica seemed a little offended at that and made to stand up when Maria motioned her to relax. "You don't really mean that." Maria said to him.
"You don't know me, Director Rambeau. I don't know you and I don't know Carol. What did you expect?" He wondered.
"I don't know. Maybe a little curiosity and joy to meet someone who knew your mother?" Maria wondered.
"I buried my mother Mary Mace Detmer in Atlantic City Cemetery next to my father Harold Detmer. Carol Danvers is just the woman who gave me up the second I was born. She's nothing to me." Will told her.
"Will, you don't know the whole story." Maria told him.
"No, I do. She gave me up because she didn't want me and that's it. It's fine because I don't want anything to do with her." Will stated as Monica stood up.
"You better be careful with your tone." Monica warned him.
"Or what, Captain Trouble?" Will asked her.
"Monica, calm down." Maria told her.
"You two may have a special relationship with Carol but I don't have that luxury. She gave me up the second I was born. And you say it was to give me the life she could never give me yet there she was for you, Monica through everything. A girl she had no blood relation to and she was there for you for everything but what about her fucking son?!" His little burst of anger put Monica back in her place. "I think the only reason she gave me up is because she didn't want to be hamstrung and weighed down with a kid that she didn't even want or had planned. That's all I am to her. A mistake. And my birth father probably doesn't even know who I am or that I even exist if he even cares. All my life, I wondered who my birth parents were and why they gave me up? Did they die or did they just not want me and it was pretty clear what her answer was. She could be there for you when you needed it yet she just tossed me aside like I was nothing. Well, jokes on her because I had two wonderful parents who raised me as their own better than she ever could and I had to bury them in the ground three years ago while she's been who knows where. She may be Captain Marvel or whatever she calls herself now to you two but she is nothing to me." Will told them off, getting all the pent up aggression, anger, resentment, and hate he had bottled up since he was a teenager and began asking these questions. (4)
"Apologies for the outburst but I think that's it for the day. Stay safe, the both of you. Come on, Goose." Will walked out with Goose right behind him. Maria and Monica let it all soak in and he was right. He was the only one of the four, Goose included, to not have a real relationship with Carol. She's been talked up as a hero and a good person but to him she's just the person who gave him up the second he was born.
Will and Goose walked out of SWORD headquarters and back into the Florida humidity. He got on his bike and put Goose in his little basket before putting his goggles and scarf around him. [Meow]
Goose looked at Will who just scratched the Flerken on the head and put the goggles comfortably on his little cat head. "I'm all right, buddy. I got it all out of my system but I meant every word."
[Meow]
"Well, if she ever shows up again and actually talks to me then we'll see if that hatchet can be buried." He replied, turning the engine on, and moving the kickstand up. "Come on, let's get out of this heat and get some food in our bellies."
[Meow]
He put his helmet on and closed the eye shield. "Cuban sound good to me too." He drove them out of the parking lot and made his way back to the closet city. While not the most ideal meeting of a SHIELD agent with SWORD, the meeting of one agent won't affect how the two organizations will interact in the future.

May 2013: Atlantic City, New Jersey
Will had a rare weekend off which was weird since he figured he'd be kept busy being a Level-8 agent but other then filing some reports/data, checking some information on suspected AIM activity, digging up leads into Essex corporation and developing future operation and mission protocols, he was free. How did he decide to use that time? Enjoy the nice spring weather and have a barbeque in his backyard.
His cousin Kim finished sophomore year at Columbia University and was going to start her internship with the STARK Relief foundation soon so might as well get some family time in before he's too busy. She came with his Uncle Stuart and Aunt Lenore came along with his Uncle Jeffrey Mace. He was in town for a conference so he was free to join them. His hometown friends Keith Ramsay, Riley Brody, Grant, Daisy, Clarice and Tabitha were able the join them but the others were busy so they couldn't come. But joining them was Frank Castle, his wife Maria, and their kids. Frank got back from his tour so he wanted them to come over. Along with them was Rhodey and Dr. Banner who were free and Crystal who came down to spend some time with Will but she wasn't along. With her was Black Bolt and Medusa.
Things were going well in Attilan with everything Will was able to do to help the people up there. The hatcheries were a welcome addition and everyone enjoyed actual meat and they recently put in hydroponic gardens for fish as well. The people there had more food than before and given that Will was pretty much set for life and was a millionaire, he didn't mind spending his money to help them. But like he told them, he wanted to do more and he and Crystal felt bad that she was the only one who has gotten to experience earth so he invited Black Bolt and Medusa for the day. Inviting them was the first step before more of them got to experience earth. He went with Medusa and Black Bolt because they blended in easier. Karnack's tattoos and general demeanor would raise some questions and hiding Gorgon's hoofs would be an issue they would tackle another time. Plus, Triton's appearance would freak everyone out and Maximus was being an ass so he went with the King and Queen. After Crystal explained everything to them about how earth and humans worked, she and Will got them set up with a basic backstory and some earth clothes.
Black Bolt or as he would go by Barry, wore a pair of boots, jeans, and a black button-up rolled up at the sleeves. Medusa or Megan wore boots, jeans with a red flowy long sleeve on top. She was told to keep her hair from moving on its own and Crystal managed to tie it up in a long ponytail to help. Crystal was wearing her earth clothes which consisted of boots, jean shorts, a yellow tank top and blue flannel shirt over it. She really developed her own style. Will reminded them of a few rules and things to avoid saying and reminding them that they weren't king and queen but just regular people with Medusa being Crystal's sister who came to visit.
It was around noon and Will was at the grill cooking burgers and hotdogs like you would see in a sitcom. There was plenty of other snacks, beverages, and alcohol so people were kept happy. Lunch was just about ready and he had steaks and chicken set for dinner. He was diligent at his duty on the two large grills as he watched everyone hanging out and enjoying themselves. Lisa and Frank Jr. were playing with Goose and hanging out with Crystal and Kim while Maria and Frank chatted with Rhodey and Grant. His friends were all talking and hanging out with Daisy, Clarice, and Tabitha talking to Medusa and asking her about her hair. Seeing it so long and in such good condition got them curious and luckily Medusa was able to improvise. Black Bolt was next to her, of course as his uncle Jeffrey and Stuart talked with him while she translated. Will just told them that he was a mute and they bought it. Other than an occasional small slipup where Crystal quickly saved them from saying anything weird or odd, things were going well.
Will flipped three burgers in the air and held a plate out so they landed down in a pile before putting them on a table and grabbing his beer when he saw Dr. Banner walk over. "How do you like your burger, Dr. Banner?"
"Medium, please." Bruce replied as he looked over at Black Bolt and Medusa who were talking with Will's aunt and uncle. Medusa must have said something funny because they were laughing which she and Black Bolt quickly copied. "So that's the Inhuman King and queen?"
"Yup." He replied, diligently tending to the food on the grill.
"Hard to believe there's a hidden city on the moon and there are more of you up there." Bruce commented. "And SHIELD doesn't know?"
"Fury knows about Inhumans but only that the genetic descendants are on earth. He doesn't think any are active besides me and he doesn't know about Attilan." Will replied putting some cheese on a burger to melt. "Imagine what he and the World Security Council would do if they figured out the moon had a hidden city of powered people living on it."
"That would not go over well." Bruce said. "So, we're the only ones who know?"
"Just you, Rhodey, Tony, and Pepper and that's because I introduce you to Crystal. Cap, Natasha, Clint, and Thor are the only ones who don't know about Attilan. Kind of hard to bring up. Hey, you guys know I'm an Inhuman who underwent an enhanced Terrigenesis from a meteor that came to earth and it turns out there are others like me living on the moon." Will said sarcastically. "I'll tell them eventually when I figure out how to broach the subject. Explaining something like this isn't easy."
"Fair enough." Bruce replied. "I'm surprised you didn't tell Fury."
"I respect him, I really do but even I have things I want to keep close to the chest. Guess it's a habit I've picked up since my brain became a deadly weapon." Will joked as he removed the cooked burgers, hot dogs, and not-meat based alternatives from the grill. "All right, lunch is ready."
"Yes. I'm starving." Frank Jr. was the first up and rushed over to plate two burgers and a hotdog before piling on the ketchup.
"Easy with the ketchup, Frank." Will pat him on the head. "Save some for the rest of us."
Everyone else grabbed their plates and got their burgers and hotdogs as Will walked over to Medusa and Black Bolt. Black Bolt looked at the food with interest and signaled. "No, this isn't like the chicken, eggs, and fish you've had on Attilan but I think you'll like it. You've enjoyed the alcohol, soda, and chips I set out."
"I'll say. Medusa ate through an entire bowl of the Lays potato chips by herself and whenever I bring some back, she's always the first to eat through them." Crystal joked causing Medusa to blush a bit.
"Everyone's got a guilty pleasure. Mine happens to be sunflower seeds." Will said earning looks from the three Inhumans. "Blame my dad, he got me hooked on them when I was a kid. Anyway, don't worry about the food. There's plenty to eat and I've already got more than enough for you to take back to Attilan."
Black Bolt signaled and Medusa translated. "Thank you, Will. For continuing to help us and bringing us to earth. It is…quite remarkable."
"This is just my backyard. You've seen nothing yet but that's for another day. Let's eat." Will led them over and they got their food. Black Bolt and Medusa were a little confused on what to do so Crystal showed them. When they sat down to eat, Medusa and Black Bolt's reaction to eating their first hamburger and hotdog was rather amusing. Considering they both ate three of each, they definitely liked it. Hamburgers, hotdogs, homemade lemonade, potato chips, soda and beer were wonders to them and they were enjoying the food and the real air.
After lunch, they hung out with Black Bolt and Medusa introduced to water balloons by Lisa and Frank Jr. which led to a funny little water fight. Everyone lounged around enjoying the ever flowing alcohol and the nice weather. Eventually, most of everyone went inside to watch the NBA game and see the Hawks take on the Heats. Well, not really everyone as it was Riley, Keith, and Grant who wanted to watch the game but the others went inside to talk and hangout or just casually watch. Medusa and Black Bolt were intrigued with the sport and while they had no idea what was going on, they enjoyed it.
Will was laying out on a lawn chair with Crystal cuddled next to him as the two enjoyed the nice breeze and shade. He took a sip of water and leaned his back, letting out a relaxing sigh.
"Enjoying yourself?" Crystal wondered.
"It's a good day. Good weather, great food and excellent company." He replied, kissing her on the head. "I better enjoy this while I can before I get too busy with my recent promotion."
"So, what does a Level-8 SHIELD agent do?" Crystal asked him.
"The same as I did before if I have any say in the matter but I'll probably be stuck with more overseeing operations and leading other agents." He told her.
"Oh, that's doesn't sound that bad." She pointed out.
"It's not but I'm more effective in the field and everyone knows it. It'd just be a waste of my time being stuck at the Triskelion or the Hub all the time." Will said as he sipped his water.
"If you're there all the time then wouldn't it be easier for us?" Crystal wondered, leaning up to look at him so he sat upright in the chair.
"You'd think so but no. If I were stuck at the Triskelion or the Hub all the time, I'd be monitored 24/7 like a prisoner. Fury and a whole bunch of other agents or higher ups would be watching everything I do and everyone I meet." He said and she understood the danger.
"They'd begin to wonder who I am, why you're spending so much time with me and why I don't exist on any database on earth." She finished. "They're not watching us now?"
"Oh, they tried when I first joined but uh, I found their cameras and trackers. There's nothing watching us for miles so my home is probably the only place where I can actually relax." He assured her. "I know this is probably not the ideal relationship you saw us having. Me having to work so much and being gone so we can only hang out every few weeks."
"Well considering I never really saw myself in a relationship on Attilan, this is way better." Crystal gave him a kiss and leaned her head on his shoulder. "If…if we were able to stay on earth, would things get better?"
Will looked down at her before looking over at Black Bolt and Medusa. "I'm not sure." He kissed her head as the two laid down and enjoyed their time.
When it was dinner, Will grilled up some steaks and chicken along with salad and mash potatoes. By around 11pm, people began heading out to go home after thanking Will for a great barbeque. Dr. Banner got a car back to the city and Riley was sober enough drive Grant, Daisy, and Keith back. The others got taxis back home. Frank and his family were the last to leave. Lisa and Frank Jr. were asleep in the car as Maria hugged Will before heading over to the car.
Will and Frank gave each other a hardy hug before they walked into the driveway. "Thanks again for having us over, kid." Frank told him.
"Please it was my pleasure. I'm just glad everyone enjoyed themselves and that you're back safe." He replied. "When are you going back?"
"In September so I still got some time." Frank told him. "You ever need anything, kid you just let me know."
"Likewise. Doesn't matter where you're stationed and or what happens, you need me just call." Will shook his hand and gave him another hug. "Stay safe, Frank."
"You too, kid." Frank rubbed his back before heading over to his car and driving his family back home.
Will walked back inside to see Crystal, Medusa, and Black Bolt cleaning up so he helped before they all sat outside around a firepit. Will took a sip of scotch as he saw Black Bolt laying on a chair with Medusa. She was cuddling with him and with everyone gone her hair was free to move again. Crysal smiled, seeing her sister this happy with earth as she was before she leaned against Will and two settled in the chair. Black Bolt looked at Will and signaled as Medusa got up to translate.
"Hang on. Now that we're alone, I might have a better idea to communicate." Will told him before his eyes momentarily glowed blue. Medusa, Black Bolt, and Crystal felt a small twinge in their heads before it quickly went away. "How does this fair?"
"What's going on?" Medusa asked him.
"Psychic communication. We're speaking via our minds. No need to speak, just think it. Comes in handy." Will replied in his mind. "Sorry I never thought of this before but even the best of us tend to forget easy solutions. All you have to do is think and we'll be able to talk."
"I've done this before. You get used to it." Crystal told them.
Black Bolt sat up and looked at his wife and began to sign when he stopped himself. "Hello?"
"Black Bolt." Medusa smiled at him. "I thought I'd never hear your voice."
Black Bolt held her cheek and smiled before kissing her. She wiped away a tear before he looked over at Will. "Thank you."
"You're welcome. I figured this would be easier." Will replied. "I hope you two enjoyed yourselves today."
"We did. We never thought that something like this would be possible. For years…probably for as long as we've been on the moon many of us have wondered what earth is like. You will have my eternal gratitude for what you've done for us and for your help of our people." Black Bolt told him.
"And mine. You've done more than we could ever ask for a people you knew nothing about. We can never repay you." Medusa added.
"I don't need anything. I'm happy as it is." Will told them as Crystal held his hand and kissed him on the cheek. "I hope this can continue and more of our people can experience earth which is why I wanted to talk to you both about that possibility."
"You think that more of our people could come here?" Black Bolt asked him.
"Possibly. I don't agree with Maximus in Inhumans taking over the earth. Knowing what I know now, that would be a war that no one would win. But I also know that things on Attilan won't be able to go on forever. 1,400 people stuck in that dome and if the population continues to grow then it won't be long before something bad happens." Will stated.
"I agree. It's something that we've feared to come for generations. What are you suggesting?" Black Bolt asked.
"I might be able to find someplace on earth that the people of Attilan would be able to live free and without possible prying eyes from the rest of the world." He suggested.
"Is such a thing possible?" Medusa wondered.
"Not impossible…just difficult. I recently learned about a similar situation that gave me this idea. It'll take some working but I think I might be able to work out someplace large enough for the people of Attilan to call a new home." He told them. Black Bolt, Medusa, and Crystal smiled at the idea but also knew that it sounded almost too good to be true. "Again, I said a plan. I have no idea when it would be ready to be implemented but I've already started."
"Whatever help you need from us we will be happy to provide." Black Bolt told him.
"Wait until you hear what I have to say." He replied causing Black Bolt and Medusa to look at him weird. "I understand that things on Attilan work different then here on earth and it has been for a reason. I understand that and I'm not questioning any of the choices anyone has ever made. But if the Inhumans were to come to earth then things would have change."
"Change how?" Medusa asked him, curious to know what he would suggest.
"The caste system on Attilan was put in because of the dire situation on the moon. The dangers of terrigenesis and to keep the population under control, that I understand but if they were able to come to earth then some things would need to change. The strict caste system and meritocracy would need to be adjusted or…all together abolished." Will suggested.
"You're asking us to change a founding and crucial aspect of our people that has existed for generations." Medusa said, finding that idea ridiculous.
"Yes, but it was a system designed for a city and people trapped on the moon in a dome. If you come to earth then things would be able to change." Will pointed out. Black Bolt, Medusa, and Crystal seemed unnerved by this idea which made sense. This something that is a fundamental part of their life and society and it's normal to them whereas Will is an outside perspective.
"You are asking a lot of us." Black Bold told him.
"I understand that. I'm asking a lot about a city and people I've only known for two years. I'm not asking you to just throw away everything Attilan stands for but adjust it for a changing time and new opportunity." Will replied. "This isn't a solution to a problem we'll be able to fix tonight or in just one day. It's gonna be a process but I'm asking you to just keep it in mind and be open to the idea. I imagine none of you expected to be on earth today so time has a way of changing plans. It's how we change with them that makes us grow."
Medusa and Black Bolt shared a look and Crystal gave them a nod. "We'll consider what you have told us tonight and keep it in mind to be discussed on another day." Black Bolt answered.
"That's all I ask." Will told him. "Not all the world's problems can be fixed in one night but addressing them means they can be fixed."
"A wise human proverb." Medusa remarked.
"It's a me proverb." Will joked. The four Inhumans sat around the fire and enjoyed the night before Black Bolt, Medusa, and Crystal returned to Attilan with more food and supplies. What Will told them that night about Attilan changing would come into play in the future when the fate of their people was at stake.
June 2013: Tokyo, Japan
Will was walking through the busy and packed streets of Tokyo, Japan following up a lead on the growing list of enemies, people of interest and companies to watch out for on SHIELD's ever growing list. This time it was a Japanese biochemical and defense contractor known as Chronos Augmentations. While they seemed like a clean cut company on the outside there have been rumors of illegal human experimentation, dealing information and weapons to the highest bidder and bribing government officials. That and the projects the company was working on would put it on the radar of SHIELD and other government organizations but add in the fact that Chronos Augmentations was the Japanese subsidiary of the Essex Corporation. A huge red flag and potential problem.
He'd been in Tokyo for about two weeks, digging up leads on the company, their practices, and their future projects to add to the SHIELD file along with organizing a taskforce. They had their hands in a lot of pockets and a lot of powerful people in Japan for political protection so this was going to be complicated. Luckily, he had some friends to help. He walked through the crowded Shibuya street crossing with a hoodie over his head despite the humidity and heat in the middle of the day. He already stood out being 6ft1 in a sea of Japanese people so the hood at least hid his face. After making it through the literal sea of people at the crossing, he turned left and walked down a few streets alleys until he arrived at the Itanomu Izakaya, which was essentially the Japanese equivalent to a tapas bar.
"Welcome." The owner and waiters said to him as he walked in.
"Sake please and some Karaage and Gyoza." Will ordered in fluent Japanese. He was multilingual.
"Coming right up." The owner replied, putting down at a small table and giving him some water before heading to the kitchen to put the order in.
He sipped some water to help with the heat before removing his hoodie and rubbing his ear twice and scratching his nose. A few minutes passed as a server came by with a bottle of sake and a glass. "Another glass, please." Will told him.
"Yes." The server walked over and quickly returned with one.
"Thank you."
Will poured two glasses of sake on the table and drank one for himself when someone sat down across from him. It was a woman wearing heels, long navy business skirt, a white button-up and a purple suit jacket on top. She had violet eyes and long black hair with a purple tinge to it and was a mix of British and Japanese Ethnicity. This was Elizabeth Betsy Braddock, a British expat who's been working in Japan for the past year. She was the daughter of James Braddock Sr. who was a famous former British intelligence agent and soldier who earned various medals and commendations, even a knighthood. His efforts on the field earned him the nickname Captain Britain. Betsy worked for the SHIELD's London office before transferring to the Tokyo Branch. Her mutant powers manifested themselves in College and that's how Professor Xavier found her. He was a friend of her father and helped her hone her powers and control them. She was a telepath like him and Professor Xavier but not as powerful as either of them. She could read minds and the usual telepath stuff but when she used her powers, a butterfly-shaped energy aura would appear on her face so they weren't exactly subtle. She also had another ability to harness her psychic energy into physical energy that she could project as solid objects like a knife or a blade. Codename: Psylocke. (5)
"A little early to be drinking, isn't it?" Betsy wondered, sipping her cup of sake.
"It's five o'clock somewhere." Will remarked as a waiter came by with the Karaage and Gyoza. "Thank you."
"Enjoy." The waiter bowed and went to tend to other patrons.
"Is Shiro not joining us?" Will wondered and she shook her head no. (6)
"No, he's deep undercover at Chronos and wasn't able to come but he was able to pass on some information that I sent to base. Word from the Essex board and head came down and there's been a readjustment going on companywide." She told him.
"You think they suspect something?" Will asked.
"No, I read the mind of an executive. It's not about us exactly but more about what's been going on since the Hellfire club was taken down. They're ramping up security." Betsy told him, using her chopsticks to eat a Gyoza. "They don't want another leak or risk another loose security restriction that has them end up like AIM."
"They're paranoid which means they're hiding something. Whatever Chronos is doing for the Essex Corporation, it has to involve mutants somehow. Make sure you stay in contact with the Professor, he can help you with that." He told her which earned a confused look from her. "I know it's not exactly protocol but I'm the one who created this mission and started all this for SHIELD so I can decide how we proceed. Reports from the attack at the Vault indicate that the mutants are affiliated with the Essex corporation so having Professor Xavier help us makes sense. They're up to something so we need to find out what."
Betsy nodded as she took another sip of sake. She didn't know he was Aegis so he had to be careful with what he said and how he said it so he didn't let anything slip. She could try to read his mind but that wouldn't work. "All right. I'll call him and get some more agents to help us on this."
"Maybe we should think of bringing in other mutants who want a chance in taking the fight to a company and bad guys who want to exploit their kind. I'm Level-8 so I could create a special mutant taskforce. I'm sure there are plenty who wouldn't mind the SHIELD Consultant fee and a chance to do some good." Will pointed out. "I even came up with name for it. How does the X-force sound?"
"Corny and like it belongs in a comic book." Betsy told him.
"I'll come up with something else." He assured her. "But it's not a bad idea. SHIELD can't be everywhere and the Avengers draw too much attention. Iron Man and Hulk will do that. Making up a new team to help deal with mutant problems or bad guys who want to exploit mutants isn't a terrible idea. Something big is coming, Betsy. The Professor feels it too. Just another shoe to drop and when people find out about mutants, say hello to the next arms race."
"Just when people were getting use to the idea of aliens. Looks like I'm not going back to London just yet." She commented.
"Tokyo isn't a bad conciliation prize though. I've been enjoying the two weeks I've been here. Crossed it off my bucket list, picked up some cool stuff at stores and ate at some of the best sushi and ramen places there are." Will pointed out.
"True but I miss Sunday Roasts, Fish and Chips, Maltesers, and a proper pint of Guiness." Betsy told him.
"With you there on the beer." He remarked when his phone rang and saw it was a call from SHIELD HQ so he answered. "Hello?"
"Agent Detmer, we have an 0-8-4 reported in Peru."
"Roger that. I'm on my way to confirm. ETA six hours." He replied.
"Roger that."
Will hung up and took out some money from his wallet to pay for lunch. "Sorry to eat and run on you, Betsy but I've got to go. Let me know if something comes up and keep your head on a swivel." He told her.
"Best of luck." She remarked as Will left the Izakaya and speed walked to his hotel. He walked into his hotel room to see Goose still lying on the bed in comfort so he grabbed his bag and began packing.
"Come on, Goose. We're heading to Peru." Will told him, grabbing his backpack, and putting his laptop in it. Goose stretched before jumping down from the bed and leaving the room with Will where the two got a taxi to Narita International airport where his Quinjet was stationed in a special hangar. With the Quinjet having a top speed of Mach 2.1, he'd be able to pilot him and Goose to Perun in six hours where an O-8-4 was waiting for him.

Peru, South America
After six hours of flying, Will landed his Quinjet on the runway near the Peruvian jungles in Llactapata, Peru where an archaeological team was camped out for a dig at a newly discovered Incan temple. Once his Quinjet was secure, he put Goose on his bike's front basket and grabbed a backpack with some gear before taking the ride through the jungle towards the dig site. It was a nice scenic drive that would be great for a vacation but that would have to be for another time. Ff this were an O-8-4 then it was serious.
He arrived at the campsite and parked his bike near a hut. Taking a quick glance around the camp and not picking up anything weird with his telepathy or telekinetic sense, he was clear to move in. He took off his helmet and helped Goose remove his goggles and scarf before the two walked to the temple. Other than some flies and the screeches of nearby monkeys, things seemed pretty normal so whatever the O-8-4 was, it must have been in the temple.
Goose walked over to a tree and stood up on his back legs, looking at a scarlet macaw perched up on a branch. Goose was looking at the bird in fascination or he wanted to eat it. "You can sight see later, Goose. Or if you're hungry I'll get you something to eat. Promise." Will told him as Goose rejoined him as they walked through the jungle and arrived at the temple which looked stunning. "[Whistles] Now that is impressive."
[Meow] Goose added, essentially agreeing with him.
He took out his phone to take a quick picture when the lead archaeologist and professor walked out of temple to greet him. "Good morning, Professor. Agent Detmer with SHIELD." Will showed him his badge before putting it away. "I understand that you've made an interesting discovery."
"I-I'm not sure how to explain it. This temple dates back at least 500 years. It's filled with Pre-Incan artifacts. One of them is impossible and looks like it might be dangerous." The Professor told him.
"That's why I'm here. Can you show me?" He asked and Professor led him into the temple to a passage they discovered. They entered an old Incan shrine and right their smack dab in the middle of the stone wall was the O-8-4. It was kind of hard to miss and stuck out like s sore thumb since it was made of metal.
"There it is. Exactly as we found it." The Professor told him.
"Who else knows about this?" Will asked him.
"Just the ministry. I believe they are the ones who contacted you."
"Ok. Professor, start having your team pack up. Until SHIELD determines the risk associated with this object, it's better that you evacuate to safety." Will told him. The Professor nodded and went back to inform his team while he got to work. Will took out some scanners and tablets to begin his job while Goose decided to go wait outside since he was bored. Being outside in the sun and shade of the jungle was better than being in an old temple. He scanned the device with a handheld scanner as EDI began analyzing every inch of it. "What am I looking at EDI?"
"I'm still currently scanning but it isn't a Pre-Incan artifact. While it's a possibility that it is alien, I'm detecting traces of a steel alloy used on earth in its construction so it likely was created by humans. I am detecting a unique form of energy radiation." EDI reported.
"If I didn't know any better, it almost looks like the Tesseract weapons from World War 2 I've seen in the SHIELD archives. Run a comparative analysis and cross reference this thing with everything in SHIELD's database along with Avenger's Tower. Maybe we'll find a match for this thing." He suggested.
"Right away."
While he was doing his job, a modified Boeing C-18 Globemaster 3 airplane arrived and landed on the long stretch of road near his Quinjet. It was a CXD 23215 Airborne Mobile Command Station which use to be prevalent back in the 80s before SHIELD replaced them with the Helicarriers. This was SHIELD 6-1-6 under service and command to Agent Phil Coulson and his specialized team who arrived in Peru to respond to the O-8-4. Once the plane was secured, the team took a SHIELD SUV to the dig site where they saw the Professor and his team getting ready to leave. The SUV parked so Agent Coulson could get out along with the rest of his team. Pilot and Agent Melinda May drove the SUV while Specialist Grant Ward rode shotgun. In the backseats were Engineering and Biochemistry duo Doctor Leopold Fitz and Dr. Jemma Simmons who were two of SHIELDS best and brightest young scientists. And the sixth member of the team was the Rising Tide hacker Skye who joined the team after an incident in LA put her in SHIELD's path while investigating Project Centipede. She was brought on as a consultant because Coulson saw something in her that could prove useful.
Coulson was the first to notice the Archaeological team packing up so he walked over to the professor and showed his badge. "I'm Agent Phil Coulson with SHIELD. My team and I were called here to investigate an odd occurrence."
"You're a little late. There's already a SHIELD agent working. He got here ten minutes ago." The Professor told him and when Coulson spotted the motorcycle parked nearby, he knew who it was. "He told us to evacuate while he analyzes whatever was in the temple up ahead."
"Thank you." Coulson replied, letting the Professor get back to packing up.
"Mystery motorcycle. I'll tag and impound it." Grant told May and she nodded.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Agent Ward." Coulson told him. "Let's go. We're late."
"Too much exposure here. I'm gonna find a place to park." May said as she drove the SUV to a better place for concealment.
Fitz and Simmons looked around at the jungle in awe and excitement. "I would love to see a capuchin in the wild. Maybe even a yellow tailed woolly monkey. You know, um, Peru has 32 different species of monkey."
"Yeah, and close to 200 species of snakes. The shushupe has a fascinating venom. It's neurotoxic, proteolytic, and hemolytic." Simmons told him, chuckling in amazement while Fitz let out a nervous chuckle.
"That's fascinating." He replied as he, Simmons, and Skye followed Coulson and Ward to the temple.
"Oh, no I'd be much more concerned with earthquakes, malaria…" Simmons saw Fitz kill a bug on his neck. "Ha. There's no vaccine for Dengue fever. Oh…look at this."
She and Fitz were amazed at the temple and quickly began taking photos. Coulson, Ward, and Skye walked through the small path in the jungle to join them. "We should warn the people who live around here if the O-8-4 is dangerous. They're already dealing with anti-mining rebels and the Shining Path Guerillas. I could post something." Skye suggested to Coulson.
"Remember the panic when that anti-matter meteor splashed down just off the coast of Miami, nearly devoured the city?" Coulson asked.
"No."
"Precisely. Because we kept it quiet and contained." He told her.
"So, what am I doing?" Skye wondered.
"Well, if it gets out, I might need you to create some kind of diversion, put the public on the wrong scent." He told her.
"So, everything that I'm against." She pointed out.
"Yup." Coulson replied as he walked up the stairs of the temple as Fitz and Simmons put their phone away. Before he and Ward could walk in, Goose walked out of the temple entrance and looked at them all.
"That's a cat." Skye stated.
"What's a cat doing out here?" Ward asked.
"It's definitely not a local species. That and is has a collar around its neck." Simmons pointed out.
"Maybe it belongs to someone in the camp?" Fitz suggested.
"He's with me! Goose, you can let them in! They're already late to the party so let's not make them any later then they are!" They heard from inside the temple. Ward put his hand to his sidearm when he heard that as Goose walked back in with Coulson following him. Ward, Fitz, Simmons, and Skye followed suit and arrived inside the temple which was just as awe inspiring as the outside. They followed Coulson and Goose and arrived in the old Incan shrine to see the O-8-4 embedded in the wall with an agent standing next to it with scanners. Goose walked over and sat next to him but kept his eye on the new arrivals. "You're a little late to the party and considering I just came from Japan that says a lot."
"We got caught in traffic." Coulson told him and the others picked up a great sense of familiarity he had with this mystery man who they only saw the back of so far.
"Turn around and identify yourself." Ward told him but didn't get a response or any indication he heard him. "I said turn around and identify yourself."
Ward put his hand on his pistol which everyone saw and were worried things were going to get intense. "Coulson you can tell Mr. Attitude there to calm down and remove his hand from his sidearm before he makes a mistake."
Skye, Fitz, and Simmons snickered a bit and Coulson nodded to Ward who reluctantly removed his hand from his pistol as their mystery guest finally put his tablet down and turned around to face them. It gave Ward, Fitz, Simmons, and Skye their first look at their mystery man who had a degree of familiarity with Coulson yet he wasn't as old as Coulson. He was around their age…well, more Fitz, Simmons, and Skye's age. He was tall and well built like Ward but had an aura of calm and gentleness to him that made him seem like the guy you could have a beer with. And he was handsome as Simmons and Skye did their best to hide their blushes. "What brings you here?" Coulson asked him.
"O-8-4's are my jurisdiction Coulson, remember? Granted, I got called away from Tokyo for this but what are you doing here?" Will wondered.
"We got a report of an O-8-4 and came to investigate. Since you got here first, I guess to help you in your investigation." Coulson corrected.
"I'm usually a solo act but for you…I'll make an exception." Will replied before he began to smirk as did Coulson and the two shook hands. "Good to see you again, Coulson."
"You, too. Thanks again for sending the bottle of scotch and the salt water taffy." Coulson told him.
"Don't mention it. Sort of a tradition my dad instilled in me when an officer passed away. You did technically die so I figured it counted. It was either that or the gift basket so I went with alcohol and candy." He joked.
"Right decision as always." Coulson remarked before looking at his team. "Everyone, this is Agent William Detmer. He's one of SHIELD's best and brightest Special Operations, Tactics, and Defense Specialist."
"Please, just call me Will. It's easier that way." He assured them. "So, this is your team?"
"Agent Ward, Doctors Fitz and Simmons, and Skye. She's a consultant." Coulson introduced them.
"A merry band you have, Coulson. Well, welcome to Peru and say hello to the O-8-4. I've already started my analysis and inventory so you can have your techs start theirs." Will told him so Coulson nodded to Fitz and Simmons. The two put down their cases and took out the equipment they needed, quickly activating mini drones which hovered in the air around Will like they were observing him. Ward went back outside to keep a watch over the perimeter while the team analyzed the O-8-4.
"Leave him alone, please." Simmons said as the two drones hovered over to the device and began scanning it along with the room they were in.
"There's nothing about this anywhere. It's amazing. I searched every data stream. What do we got here, guys?" Skye asked, walking up to the device, and raising her hand to touch it when Will stopped her.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Will warned her.
"The object's placement in fossiliferous rock formations suggest it's been here for at least 1,500 years. That pre-dates this temple by a millennium. Ah! Maybe it's alien." Simmons said, excited at the idea of analyzing something alien.
"Yeah, but the shape and the craftsmanship—it's almost German." Fitz suggested.
"Sorry to rain on your parade, Dr. Simmons but Dr. Fitz is most likely right. The metal is the same steel alloy the Germans used a lot during World War 2 so we're most likely looking at an old Hydra weapon lost during the war. The energy reactor inside is the thing that concerns me." Will explained.
Fitz checked his scans and Will's probable theory was most likely right. "An old Hydra weapon? Oh, this is getting good." Skye muttered when she noticed Will's head perk up and looked at the entrance. "What is it?"
"We've got company."
"Sir." Ward radioed in.
"Go." Coulson replied.
"We have a situation."
"Lots of rebels in this area." Skye told him.
"Not enough gunfire. Keep working. I'm on my way. Will, with me." Coulson told him.
"Goose, stay here." Will took out his HK pistol from his back and followed Coulson outside. That's where they saw Peruvian military in a standoff with Agent Ward and Agent May. Will quickly pulled out his Glock 17 from his ankle holster and took aim while covering Coulson.
"Buenos dias. Soy agente Coulson. Estamos aqui por un asunto de la seguridad internacional." Coulson said in Spanish when the female comandante walked over with two soldiers flanking her.
"Phillip?"
"Camilla?" Coulson was not expecting to see her here. "Do you mind?"
"After you."
Coulson nodded to the others so Ward let the solder he was holding go and they lowered their guns while she ordered her men to stand down. She then walked up the steps of the temple to Coulson. "And now for a proper hello." She gave him a kiss on both cheeks.
"Comandante—a promotion. Congratulations." Coulson said.
"Three years ago. But thank you." She replied.
"Agent Melinda May, Agent Grant Ward, Agent Will Detmer, this is Comandante Camilla Reyes. She's with the Policia military del Peru. We used to work together back in the day." Coulson explained.
"I'll bet." Will muttered.
"Let the team know that everything's ok." Coulson told Ward who went back inside to do so.
"I know you found a strange object on Peruvian soil. We should have a conversation about how to proceed." She told him.
"Of course, but an O-8-4 supersedes all national claims." Coulson informed him.
"You look good." She said to him and he smiled.
"Yeah, I work out." He replied.
"Come, let me show you something." She led him away so the two could talk in private.
Will and May watched Coulson and the Comandante walk away and were rather curious about their history. "Who knew he was such a player back in his day." He remarked and while May didn't give any noticeable responses, her facial expression indicated enough amusement. "Agent Will Detmer."
"I've heard about you." May shook his hand. "Agent May, pilot."
"Nice to meet you." He replied as Goose came out from the temple. He looked at May before walking over and brushed up against her along with purring. "He likes you. You should be honored. Goose doesn't like a lot of people."
"You brought your cat on a mission?" May asked him.
"I couldn't find a cat sitter. Besides, he's prefers hanging out with me and he's a very good lookout." He joked only to see May's expression stay on neutral. Before he could make another comment, Goose let out a loud hiss after some rustling of branches and birds flew into the air nearby. "And he also knows when something bad is about to happen."
He took out his phone and activated the scanner which picked up something closing in. "What is it?" May asked him.
"Incoming. Get to your vehicle. I'll find Coulson." Will told her and the two rushed through the jungle back to the campsite which was now empty except for the Peruvian soldiers and Coulson. May then went left to get to the SHIELD SUV while Will and Goose kept moving to his bike when his danger sense went off. "CONTACT! Take cover!"
An RPG flew through the air and blew up one of the old houses that the archaeological team used for their dig. Gunfire and the Peruvian anti-mining rebels began to swarm out from the jungle and opened fire on Coulson, Comandante Reyes and her battalion. They got some cover and returned fire while Will and Goose hid behind a large tree as a squad of rebels rushed past them and fired at Coulson. He got behind one of them and snapped his neck before push kicking another into a tree, leg sweeping the third before quickly disarming the fourth. He blocked and parried his knife before locking and twisting his wrist and throwing him to the ground where he killed him with a bullet to the brain. He turned and shot the third rebel in the leg as he was getting up so he dropped to a knee and then took him out with a roundhouse to the face before grabbing the rebels knife and throwing it at the second rebel he kicked into a tree, hitting him right in the heart. He took an AK-47 and a few extra ammo clips along with two grenades before moving on.
Coulson was with Camilla as the two fired back at the rebels when they saw Will walk out of the jungle with an AK-47. He fired a barrage to his right and shot down three rebels quickly before turning to his left and shooting a rebel who aimed his RPG, causing him to fall down so the rocket fired to the side and killed two of his friends. Coulson and Camilla moved together shooting at the rebels as Camilla's men fired back and covered them before they rushed over to the camp's kitchen hut and took cover.
"Your men need to fall back now or we'll never make the runway." Coulson told her as he reloaded his pistol. "Now, your truck. Let's go! Will, cover us!"
Coulson and Camilla moved in tandem, covering each other's backs as they made their way to the military truck. Will shoot back at the rebels, killing several more before he had to reload. He pulled the pin on a grenade and threw it into the jungle for cover before rushing over to his bike and putting on his helmet. Goose jumped up into the basket and got low as Will started his bike. Coulson and Camilla hid behind a tree and saw Ward, Fitz, Simmons, and Skye rush out of the temple. Ward got low and fired back with his pistol but the other three scrambled out in a panic and bumped into each other. They didn't even get low and just screamed in terror before Ward pushed them back inside. Camilla could really see that Coulson's team was not fit for the field.
Ward took out a metal rod from his jacket which quickly extended. "Tell your men to get down." Coulson told her.
"Get down!" She shouted and they did. Ward rolled from the temple stairs and stabbed the rod into the ground which shot out a metal grenade into air above his head. It released concussive wave that knocked the rebels back and gave everyone some time to move. "My truck, now! Vamanos!"
She, Coulson, and her men rushed over to the truck and got in as Ward signaled the others to come out. They saw a rebel reload his rifle and aim at them only for Will to jump forward on his motorcycle and drift to a stop, shooting the rebel down with four shots to the chest and one to the head with his AK-47. He then sprayed a barrage of bullets in an arc and killed two more rebels as Agent May arrived in the SUV.
"Move! Now!" She opened up the passenger door and they rushed in.
Will tossed the AK-47 and peeled out in the dirt before driving out of the jungle to the runway with May in the SHIELD SUV following him and Coulson and Comandante Reyes and her men following behind. Unfortunately, the rebels got into their pickup trucks and followed them.
Ward looked back and saw the military truck following them. "Coulson's secure in the PMP's truck." He told her before looking at Will leading them on his motorcycle. "He's taking the south road to the airfield."
"Got it." May replied, following behind Will, and staying focused on the road. Even though they were getting away safely, Fitz was concerned with the speed they were going.
"Slow down!"
"You're joking, right?" Skye asked him.
"Ward, listen! We have to be careful. There's a binding energy structure that could overheat." Fitz warned him.
"I could roll down a window!" Simmons suggested, rolling down her window only for a bullet to ricochet in.
"Do not roll down a window!" Skye told her.
"Stay quiet and keep your heads down!" Ward told them all as Will led them left past the ravine.
"But Ward!"
"QUIET!" May and Ward shouted at Fitz.
Will looked at his rearview mirror and saw the rebel's trucks were going to be an issue so he swerved a bit and slowed down until he was alongside the SUV. May looked at him and rolled down her window a bit. "Stay on the road to the airfield! I'll handle our guests!"
She nodded as Will hit the brakes, slowing down so the SHIELD SUV and the PMP truck went past him until he was right alongside the lead rebel truck. Before the rebels could shoot him, he pulled out his pistol and shot the driver in the head and then blew out the front left tire and sped up. The truck crashed to a stop, which forced the three trucks following it to crash and he capped it off by taking his last grenade and throwing it behind him. Just as the other trucks got free to continue the chase, the grenade rolled next to them and went off, blowing them all up. That gave the others enough time to get into the SHIELD airplane along with Coulson, Comandante Reyes and her men. Will drove his motorcycle into his Quinjet and prepped it for takeoff. He and the others made it out of there alive and unharmed.
"Cut it pretty close, sir." Ward told Coulson as everyone breathed a sigh of relief in the Bus's cargo area.
"Didn't want to leave anyone behind." He replied as he saw Skye, Fitz, and Simmons sprawled out, doubled over or on the ground after what just happened.
"I got to say it. I miss my van." Skye commented.
"Now, what was the problem?" Ward asked Fitz.
"As I said before, this device has a high-frequency, fluctuating, sub-material compression—"
"Fitz, in English." Ward told him.
"The O-8-4 is fueled by Tesseract Technology. Hydra. World War 2. Captain America. It's full of lethal amounts of Gamma radiation." Fitz explained.
"Gamma—you're saying it's nuclear?"
"No. He's saying it's much, much worse." Coulson said and everyone took a large step back from the device.
May piloted them away from Peruvian airspace and waited for Coulson to give her a destination when she got pinged and noted a Quinjet closing in. "SHIELD 6-1-6, this is Quinjet 5-2-1 requesting permission to dock and board. It's me, Will by the way."
Coulson arrived in the cockpit just as Will arrived to dock with them so he grabbed the radio. "You're clear to dock but don't scratch my paint."
"Roger that. I'll be there momentarily." Will moved his Quinjet into position to dock with the Bus using the docking clamps and port on the roof. Coulson then radioed to SHIELD HQ to inform them of the O-8-4 and the situation.
"And the O-8-4 is in your possession?"
"It's on board and contains a Tesseract fuel cell, so…there's that." Coulson informed them.
"Copy. You are a go for check-in guidance through restricted airspace. Safe travels."
"Top speed's a priority, May. Obviously." He told her but all he got was silence. "I know you didn't want to see combat. I apologize for that. Do you need anything else before I go check on the device fueled by evil that's sitting in our cargo hold?" The only response he got was May flipping a switch. "This was fun."
Coulson walked out of the cockpit just in time to see Will walk down the spiral staircase to the roof with Goose next to him. "All docked up and secure with not a single scratch on this baby. And to think that I almost wasn't certified to fly." He joked, taking out a piece of salt water taffy from his pocket and putting it in his mouth. "You want one?"
"No, I'm good. Still have that habit?" Coulson asked him as the two walked through the bus and made their way down to the cargo door.
"More of a ritual. After every mission or shootout, I eat a piece of salt water taffy from James Candy Company in Atlantic city. It's keep me alive and unharmed and I plan to keep it that way." Will told him, chewing the candy with a smile on his face. "The super powers help too."
"I'll bet." Coulson remarked as he looked down at Goose. "He's house trained right?"
"Relax, Goose is fine. He even knows how to use a toilet." He assured Coulson as walking to the cargo area gave him a good look at the plane and it was nice. "Wow…aren't you lucky to get this baby to yourself."
"I earned some goodwill after the Battle of New York. I did die." Coulson told him, opening the door to the cargo area, and walked down with Will following him.
"I kicked Loki's ass, helped beat back the Chitauri, guide a nuke through a portal at the Chitauri mothership and suffered the cold empty vacuum of deep space for nearly two minutes and all I got was two weeks of vacation." Will pointed out, earning a chuckle from Coulson. "And it was barely a vacation as I had to deal with toppling a criminal organization in my hometown and taking down that Collector serial killer. Where's my plane?"
"I heard about that along with taking down that criminal construction firm in Pittsburgh and then the cannibal family in Texas. You keep yourself busy and I imagine give Director Fury a headache." Coulson remarked.
"After the incident in Paris with my cousin, Vaas, Hoyt Volker and all the other stuff…it's starting to become a hobby of mine." Will replied as he and Coulson saw Comandante Reyes and her men putting their gear and weapons into containment cases. So long as they were on the plane, their weapons would have to remain locked up and secured.
"Is everyone all right?" Coulson asked.
"Banged up but alive. Thank you for the extraction." A soldier said to them as he placed his rifle in the containment case. Coulson closed it and put in the code that locked it.
"But we lost a lot of men." Reyes told him.
"We'll make sure the rest of you get home safe, Comandante." Will assured her when he noticed her gaze was at the science lab and the O-8-4. And on the team arguing.
"Are we safe? On a plane with that?" She pointed out. "There's a PMP airfield in Iquitos. It's a short distance—"
"We'll burn as fast as we can for a SHIELD Containment facility. There's no safer place for us to go." Coulson told her.
"Sir, if I may? You got anything to drink around her?" A soldier asked him.
"Upstairs. I think you'll find it quite comfortable up there." Coulson said and they all got up and went up the stairs.
"I expect the grand tour." Camilla said to Coulson before joining her men.
"I know you do." He replied as he and Will entered the science lab to hear Fitz and Ward arguing which immediately ended when they saw Coulson. "Do we have a problem in here?"
"No, sir. Just working on our communication. Not everyone was prepared for a firefight." Ward responded.
"We got out, didn't lose anyone, saved a few of theirs—I'd say we did all right. Anything else?" Coulson asked and everyone seemed to stay quiet until Skye raised her hand.
"Uh, yeah I have a small question because I've been feeling like the tagalong hayseed rookie, but now I get the sense that Ward doesn't know which one's Simmons and which one's Fitz, and they've seen even less gunfire than me, and I'm not rocket scientist, but is this your first mission together?"
"No. Of course not. It's our second." Simmons corrected her.
"I was your first? That's sweet." Skye joked.
"You're amused?" Ward asked her.
"I'm terrified. I am in way over my head, but I have been on this team just as long as any of you. I might as well be team captain." Skye said, earning rolled eyes from Ward and Fitz and a scoff from Simmons. Coulson just stared at her and Will chuckled.
"I like her." Will told Coulson.
"I was joking, but maybe that's not a bad idea because these guys do not like each other much." Skye told them.
"This isn't about that. I'm a specialist. Today, I could have eliminated the enemy threat myself if I was working alone, but I had non-combat-ready agents—"
"Whoa, whoa. Wait. You work alone?"
"So typical. Who do you think designs your equipment?"
"Or the Polymers for your weaponry. People like us do it."
'Try going into the field with just your bare bum."
"Seem them proving the point I just made?" Skye asked Coulson.
"Mind if I put my two cents in here, Coulson?" Will asked him and got a nod in response. "Ok, first of all, I think everyone should take a deep breath and relax. For those of you who aren't combat prone this is just the excess adrenaline wearing off so you're all a bit moody. Give it a few hours, calm down and you'll be better. But first off, everyone's ego needs to take a step back so the team can work together."
"Excuse me?" Simmons asked him.
"I stand by what I said. Fitz and Simmons, you're quick to callout Ward for being nothing more than a muscle head soldier but if it weren't for him then the two of you would have been dead. You two need to trust that Ward can protect you and listen to him. The two of you were running around like a chicken that got its head cut off and you were lucky that neither of you caught a bullet. Your SHIELD trained scientists so act like it." Will told them.
"We've never been shot at before." Fitz told him.
"Well, the first time is the most terrifying but you get used to it. So, if you don't plan on taking self-defense lessons or learning how to shoot next time, keep your head down and listen to Ward. Thanks to him none of you were hurt." Will pointed out. "But Ward also needs to understand that going at it alone as a Specialist isn't always the answer. If you actually were alone today Ward, you either would have been overrun by the enemy, forced to retreat, or would have accidently set off the O-8-4 and killed yourself."
"That last one would have been likely." Fitz muttered earning a look from Ward.
"I get the Specialist mentality Ward. I've had similar training but if you're gonna work on a team then think less about I and more about us. You're gonna depend on each other so either work it out or you should all just walk away and go back to the academy." Will warned them all.
"You talk a big game but you were more reckless than all of us." Ward pointed out.
"It's not recklessness if I know what I'm doing and if it wasn't for me then you'd be in a lot worse shape." Will corrected him, which earned a scoff from Fitz and Simmons.
"Just when we thought you were nothing like Ward, you're even worse. You specialists are all alike, thinking with your guns and your attitudes." Simmons mocked.
"Well, my gun and attitude actually give me the authority and clearance to send you back to the academy, Dr. Simmons so don't push me." Will warned her.
"What?" Fitz asked.
"Agent Detmer was promoted to Clearance level-8 a month ago. Youngest in SHIELD History." Coulson said, shocking Ward, Fitz, and Simmons while Will stood there with a grin on his face. "I told you he was SHIELD's best and brightest and he's not wrong. We have a lot of kinks to iron out but Ward, you can speak six languages. Simmons, you have two PHDs in fields I can't pronounce, and Fitz, you are a rocket scientist. So, work it out."
Coulson and Will left the lab as Skye watched them leave. "I-I'm—I'm good at stuff, too."
Will and Coulson walked back up to the main level of the Bus with Goose following behind. "Your team needs some work if they're really gonna be effective." Will remarked and Coulson agreed.
"I know. They just need a common goal or enemy to bring them together. It's an effective team builder." Coulson said and earned a look from Will.
"Yeah, I'm aware of that now but putting your team into a firefight wasn't that effective." He pointed out. "Take them to an escape room. Or better yet, how about a deserted island? That would sort of force them to work together."
"That might be a little unethical." Coulson told him as they walked through the main floor and saw the Peruvian soldiers getting comfortable. They were pouring themselves drinks from the bar or getting food from the kitchen. "SHIELD does have its ethical limits."
"If only that were true." He muttered under his breath.
"What?" Coulson asked.
"Nothing." Will remarked. "Do you mind if I catch some sleep in one of the spare bunks? I've been up for the past 24 hours including the flight and passing through several time zones. Even I need some sleep."
"Sure thing. Help yourself." Coulson assured him.
"Thanks. Yell if you need something or if the plane's under attack." Will told him as he walked over to a bunk before he stopped. "And Coulson. If you're gonna seal the deal with Camilla…keep it down."
Will winked at him and chuckled before he opened the bunk door letting Goose in. He closed the door behind him and leaned against it, breathing a sigh of exhaustion, and rubbing his eyes. Goose jumped onto the dresser next to the bed and titled his head at Will.
[Meow?]
"I'm fine, Goose." Will assured him. "I just hate lying to Coulson."
[Meow]
"I know, I know. Just because Fury told me not to say anything doesn't mean I have to like it. And the second Coulson finds out the truth or is ready to know, then I'm telling him." He replied, removing his HK pistol from his back, his Glock pistol from his ankle holster and his spare ammo clips from his waist, ankle, and pockets and putting them on the dresser. He removed his black button-up to reveal his form fitting blue t-shirt and put it on the dresser before slipping out a Microtech Combat Troodon OTF 3.8" knife from his belt and placed it with his guns. He sat down on the bed and took his shoes off as Goose jumped down from the dresser and stretched before laying down at the foot of the bed. "Anyway, that's a problem for another day. Time for a cat nap. Good night, Goose."
[Meow] Goose laid down on the foot of the bed while Will laid down and put his head on the soft pillow. The mobile command units may have been out of rotation and weren't designed with comfort in mind but this one was. He was laying on a better bed then he'd get at the best SHIELD safehouses. He passed out and fell asleep within minutes.

SHIELD 6-1-6 The Bus, Atlantic Ocean
Several hours had passed since they left Peru and were now on their way to a secured SHIELD base to contain and/or get rid of the O-8-4 and the team used that time however they could. May stayed in the cockpit to fly as she had to follow precise flight plans as they made their way to a SHIELD base. Fitz and Simmons managed to get a full understand of the device and figured out it was a laser weapon powered by a Tesseract fuel cell. Powerful and it was a dangerous weapon. The question was how it ended up in the temple, who placed it there, and who was it intended for?
Skye talked with Ward to try and get on even ground and a better understanding going forward. Ward was the buttoned-up SHIELD Specialist who acted like a robot and was all seriousness whereas Skye was a hacker with the Rising Tide who a week ago was working on exposing SHIELD and all its secrets. The two couldn't be more different yet they were going to be stuck with one another so mending broken bridges was necessary. Coulson showed Camilla around the Bus for a tour before taking her to his office where he showed her all his vintage SHIELD and SSR collectibles.
"First walkie-talkie wristwatch—1936, Poland. They only made 20, I think. Still works." Coulson showed her. He was a collector.
"I forgot you're such a sentimentalist, Phillip. Romanticizing history." She said as she looked at his shelf of collectibles.
"Yeah, most of it's glued down." He told her, putting the wristwatch back. "There was an elegance to things back then."
"There we agree."
"With everything around us changing so quickly, it doesn't hurt to have a few touchstones to the past. Reminds me what's important." Coulson stated.
"The last thing I want to do is relive days gone by. A few nights, maybe." Camilla suggested, closing the door to the office.
"I see what you're doing."
"I'm reminiscing. This is such a step up from the RV we used to work out of when you were stationed in Cusco." Camilla said.
"I don't remember much working." He pointed out, causing her to chuckle. "I also don't remember you being this direct."
"We're suck above the clouds for the new few hours. We might as well enjoy ourselves. We could make a few more memories to add to your collection. What do you think?" Camilla wondered as Coulson kept the smile on his face.
"I think…Ward already knows you'll have to eliminate May from the equation to have a chance…which gives him about 20 seconds to get to her first." He replied, unaware that a soldier had gotten to the cockpit and used a device to drill a small hole through the door and pump sleeping gas in. May was out within minutes.
Ward spared a glance to two Peruvian soldiers sitting by the window playing some cards. Their drinks were full and hadn't been touched in the past few hours and they were trying to act all calm. "Skye, hand me the bottle."
"Ok, Turbo, but you're still nursing the one you got." Skye told him as she handed him the bottle of bourbon.
"I'm not the only one." Ward replied as he subtly glanced at his side and she knew what he meant. He quickly moved Skye to the side to save her from a Peruvian soldier before disarming him and smashing the bottle on his hand. He then punched him across the face, sending him crashing over the crouch before he tackled another soldier into a wall and knocked him out with a right cross. He then got on top and landed two more punches just as Coulson came down with Camilla right behind him. That's when they saw the security camera from the science lab. One of the soldiers had a scalpel to Fitz's neck. Skye was then grabbed by a solider and now that they had hostages, Ward and Coulson had no more moves to play.
"We were allies. We had history. When did you decide to throw that away?" Coulson asked Camilla.
"As soon as I saw your team." She replied. Coulson had no choice but to surrender. Ward, Skye, and May were taken to the cargo bay and were zip cuffed to the cargo door with Fitz and Simmons. If they tried anything then they'd be ejected from the plane. The Bus's systems were locked down with every single section sealed shut so even if they got free, they couldn't escape to another part of the plane. Coulson was tied up against the holovid table and roughed up a bit. Camilla's men took Ward and Coulson's gun so they were armed now.
"The reason I'm still alive is because you need me to verify the change of routes for your pilot when HQ calls in any minute now." Coulson pointed out.
"I'd appreciate that." She told him.
"But if I don't, SHIELD will shoot this aircraft out of the sky. That'll take the O-8-4 out of your hands. Maybe I should let them." Coulson said.
"Oh, no, I think you'll make the call. You already handed me your plane for the life of one of your little lab rats. If I open the cargo hold, you'll lose them all and you're such a sentimentalist." Camilla had him dead to rights and Coulson knew she was right. He just hoped that his team would be able to get out and come up with a plan. One of her men returned with the O-8-4 from the lab and placed it next to her.
"You knew this was a weapon all along."
"But you got to it first. I had to play nice. Yes, Coulson. For once, I'm actually ahead of you. My country commissioned that weapon decades ago. After the fall of Hydra, many scientists followed their Nazi friends to hide on this side of the world." She explained.
"German engineering."
"The weapon was lost during a clash in the jungle. Until today. With it, we'll end the rebel uprising and finally stabilize my country." Camilla stated.
"You mean rule your country." Coulson corrected her.
"You stay in your borders. I'll stay in mine." She told him.
"Those borders are disappearing. Aliens descended on New York, remember? They don't care whose colors you wear. They just care who's in the way. We should be working together, not fighting." Coulson told her only for her to chuckle.
"Oh, Phil. You've fallen so hard. Was it 11 years ago, now? You swooped in with SHIELD, with so much confidence, so much mystery. You had 100 men at your disposal. And now—"
"A hand-picked team. And, yes, they're that good." Coulson stated.
"Oh, Phil. You're not even aware. Your renewed idealism, your collectibles, your airborne man cave, surrounding yourself with young, attractive agents—you're having a mid-life crisis."
"More of an afterlife thing, really." Coulson pointed out.
"And I'm not going to even mention the Red Corvette."
"Her name's Lola." Coulson informed her and she just laughed.
"Of course, it is. It's textbook. You built this team so you could feel relevant, to feel needed." She told him when Coulson noticed two soldiers heading to the one closed bunk on the plane.
"They don't need me. They need time." He replied.
"Well, time is not on their side." Camilla told him.
"Maybe which is why I have something better. Or should I say someone better." He corrected himself as he saw the two soldiers try to open the bunk door. "I wouldn't do that if I were you two. He's only been asleep for a few hours so he's likely to be cranky. And you wouldn't like him when he's cranky."
"Get whoever's in there and take them down with the others." Camilla ordered her men in Spanish. They nodded and finally managed to force the door to the bunk open.
"Don't say I didn't warn you." Coulson remarked with a smirk on his face.
The two soldiers saw a man sleeping in a cot and a cat curled up at the foot of the bed with two pistols, a knife, a black button-up and several pistols clips on the dresser. One of the soldiers piled together the weapons while the other grabbed the sleeping man by the arm only for his wrist to get grabbed. Will's eyes shot open and he glared at the soldier who woke him up and the other who was taking his stuff.
"I…was sleeping." He growled in anger before breaking his wrist so the bone was protruding from the skin.
"AAH!" The soldier screamed in pain before Will punched him in the throat, grabbed his head and pushed him against the other soldier into the wall. He snapped the first soldier's neck and tossed his body aside before quickly grabbing the second soldier's arm as he pulled out his pistol. He blocked a wild punch and disabled the soldier with a joint lock to the wrist which made him drop his gun. Will kneed him in the groin before grabbing his knife off the dresser and driving it through his heart in one fluid motion. The soldier gasped out in pain as Will pulled the knife out and dropped his body to the ground before he grabbed his guns from the dresser.
"Get over there! Kill him!" Reyes ordered her two remaining men to the bunk. They pulled out their pistols and held them steady, slowly approaching the bunk ready for any kind of surprise.
Will leapt out from the bunker and took out one of the soldiers down with a flying scissor takedown which knocked back the second soldier. He pistol whipped the soldier in the face and stomped on his neck, killing him before throwing his knife at the second soldier. It skimmed past his cheek and hit the wall Coulson was tied to, slightly cutting the rope his hands were tied with. The second soldier tried to shoot Will but he grabbed his arms and disabled him with some joint locks, knocking the gun away before taking him to the ground with a hip throw. He elbowed the soldier in the head and then shot him twice in the chest before he aimed his gun at Comandante Reyes who had her gun pointed at Coulson's head.
"Drop it." Will warned her.
"No, you drop it." She replied.
"You really think you'll be able to pull the trigger before I put a bullet through your forehead?" He asked. "I'm a quick shot."
"Maybe but you're up here and the rest of Coulson's team is tied up in the cargo area being watched over by one of my men. If you don't drop your gun then they get to experience what a 30,000-foot drop feels like." Camilla warned him. Coulson subtly moved his hands against the knife and cut away more of the rope. Once enough was cut, he gave a subtle nod to Will who nodded back. "Didn't you hear what I said?"
"Yeah, I did. Coulson, your response?" Will wondered as Coulson got free and kicked out one of Camilla's legs. He pulled the knife out of the wall and slashed her arm so she dropped the gun before quickly throwing her to the ground. She saw the gun and rushed over to get it only for Will to kick it away. She looked up and saw the barrel of Will's HK pistol in her face. "Guess that's a no. Any last words?"
"Stand down, Will." Coulson ordered, earning a look from him.
"Seriously? She took over your plane, tied you up and was prepared to kill you." He reminded him.
"I know. Just don't kill her. It'll save us the hassle and headache from her government." Coulson told him. He gave Coulson a nod before he adjusted his aim and shot her in both legs. She screamed and cradled her legs as the pain of being shot was horrendous. Coulson just gave Will a look only to get a shrug in response.
"What? I didn't kill her." He pointed out as Coulson tossed him his knife. "You go help the others. I'll take care of the soldier in the cockpit."
He walked to the cockpit while Coulson tied up Camilla and grabbed her gun off the ground. Will connected his phone to the Bus's security system so could get to work on integrating into it's system. "EDI, deactivate the plane's security lockdown on my mark." He stacked up against the cockpit door, putting his gun back in its holster before putting his knife into reverse grip. "Three…two…one…mark."
The Bus's security lockdown was lifted and all the doors were unlocked. He opened the cockpit door and rushed in as the soldier in the pilot chair stood up and pulled out his pistol. Will grabbed his arm and moved it to the side where he sliced wrist with his knife, causing him to drop his pistol. The soldier tried to punch him only for Will to parry his attack, punch him in the jaw and pulled him into a reverse guillotine choke. The soldiers tried to get free but couldn't reach Will and the pressure on his neck was immense. "Please…no…don't do this."
"Should have thought about that before you hijacked this plane and tried to take on SHIELD. This is what happens." Will told him in an unapologetic tone as he snapped his neck in one fluid motion. He dragged his body out of the cockpit and got into the pilot's chair to make sure the plane didn't go down.
Inside the cargo hold, Ward, Skye, Fitz, Simmons, and May were tied together with one of Comandante Reyes men standing guard. After some pity talking and finding out that Agent May was the SHIELD legend known as the Calvary, they began to formulate a plan. As Skye told Ward, you don't need to come up the whole solution only part of it like pieces solving a puzzle. After coming up with a plan that was a mixture of ingenious and crazy they put it into action. May took out the soldier after dislocating her wrist to get free of her zip cuffs and then freed the others.
"Ok, we're sure, right? Everyone's sure?"
"We're all on board."
"Yeah, let's do this fast."
"No turning back. No freezing up."
"Because if we do, then…"
"All of us die."
"We know."
"All right."
Skye, Ward, Fitz, and Simmons heard an engine rev and saw May over by the SHIELD SUV. "You guys talk a lot." She got in the driver's seat and rammed through the doors to the science lab, allowing the others to get what they needed.
Simmons undid one of the air vents to the floor above them, Fitz grabbed one of his drones and powered it up while Skye grabbed rope and harnesses for their plan. They secured themselves to a rope and readied themselves when they heard someone cough to get their attention. That's when they saw Coulson standing in the cargo hold with a pistol in his hand and an unamused look on his face. "Someone want to explain to me what happened to the science lab?"
"Sir?" Ward and the others were not expecting to see him free.
"Uh…we can explain that." Fitz assured him.
"It was part of our plan to rescue you and get the O-8-4. It was a really good plan too." Simmons said. "Well, not really good as it most likely involved blowing a hole in the side of the plane."
"Then call me glad it didn't come to that. Reyes is in custody and her men are down." Coulson told them.
"How did you do it? Did you take them down all by yourself without a gun? Of course, you did. Wish we could have seen that." Skye said when they heard the plane's intercom ping.
"Coulson, HQ confirmed our change in course. We're cleared to the Slingshot." Will's voice came over the plane's intercom.
Coulson walked over to a panel on the wall and tapped the intercom button. "Roger that. Get us there as fast as possible."
"On it." Will replied into his headset as he turned his head and saw May standing outside the cockpit. "You want to take over again?"
She nodded as Will turned on the auto-pilot and got out of the seat so she could take over flying. He dragged the soldier's body from the hallway back to the main area and piled him up with the others he killed. Coulson led his team back up from the cargo hold so they could Comandante Reyes tied up while Will piled the dead soldiers together. Seeing the bodies, Ward and the others figured out it must have been Will who helped Coulson and capture Reyes.
"Geez." Skye muttered seeing the dead bodies piled together. It was a jarring sight.
"Yeah, first time is a little jarring." Will told her. "Still, we're alive, they're dead, plane's not damaged and the O-8-4 is still ours. I'd say this was a successful mission."
"Definitely one to remember." Coulson remarked.
SHIELD Facility: The Slingshot
After another hour of flying, the team landed at the Slingshot. It was a SHIELD/SWORD joint facility that was designed for the launching of space shuttles to destroy hazardous or dangerous items and O-8-4s. When they landed, a team took care of the dead bodies and put Comandante Reyes into custody before beginning the repairs to the Bus. Coulson was in the cargo hold looking over Lola for any scratches or dings. Will and Goose were nearby watching in amusement. Goose then decided to be playful and walked over to Coulson before jumping up and sitting down on the trunk.
"Will, do you mind getting Goose off the car?" Coulson asked him, inspecting what looked like a scratch on the hood.
"No, I don't mind." He replied, just standing there with a smile on his face and Coulson giving him a look. Skye walked down the stairs and over to the.
"Not a scratch but your plane needs some repairs. I hope SHIELD insurance covers hijackings." Skye joked.
"Sure. Under incidentals." Coulson told her causing Skye to chuckle a bit.
"What exactly am I signing up for?" Skye asked him.
"Like I said—front-row seat to the craziest show on earth."
"Yeah, but I didn't expect the show to get this crazy this fast all for an object you're just gonna destroy." Skye pointed out.
"Slingshot is protocol." Will told her. "Certain items like the O-8-4 are too dangerous for any person or country to have and people like Reyes would always be after it."
"What happened with Reyes, anyway?" Skye asked.
"She's being held at a SHIELD detainment facility. I expect the Peruvian government will negotiate for her release. She probably won't spend much time in jail but they'll likely want some disciplinary action taken against you Will for what you did to their men." Coulson pointed out.
"If they actually get their way and that actually happens I'll eat my shoe. They're lucky I didn't put a bullet in her head and as for the soldiers, well that's what they get when they try to mess with SHIELD and waking me up from my nap." Will replied only to get a stoic look from Coulson and a confused look from Skye. "I was cranky, all right. But if anything, the Peruvian government is gonna need to do some serious butt kissing so the world security council doesn't invoke restrictions on them after what they tried to pull."
"Fair enough." Coulson replied.
"I meant what happened with you and Reyes? You guys totally did it back in the day, right?" Skye asked him.
"That's classified." Coulson replied before he kept checking on his car.
"So, you think of sticking around?" Will asked Skye. "He's not wrong. We've got the craziest show on earth and this is barely scratching the surface."
"I'm not sure. SHIELD plays pretty rough." Skye remarked.
"Well, the world's always been rough, dark and ugly. We're just the ones who fight back." Will remarked. "Besides, working with SHIELD means you'll be able to make more of a difference then you could with the Rising Tide."
"Coulson told you I was a Riding Tide member?" She asked and he shook his head no.
"No, you just did." He told her. "You speak like you know your computers and how quickly you searched the O-8-4 in the temple means you've got some skills but you're not a SHIELD tech. Your demeanor and attitude show that plus how you spoke about Ward indicates some history."
"They put a bag over my head when they first found me." Skye pointed out.
"SHIELD's not the best with welcoming wagons, I'll give you that but Coulson's good people. If he picked this team and picked you to be on it…then he's sees something in you. And take it from someone who knows what that feels like, it means a lot." Will told her, overhearing Ward talk to May about how Skye could turn into an asset with some training as a field agent.
That's when Fitz and Simmons came down the stairs with a cooler of beers. "We survived our first hijacking. Eat that Professor Vaugh."
"You had a new experience. We have a new experience. But it was new for all of us." Simmons said as both of them seemed to be in a good mood.
"They're happy." May remarked.
"Hey, come on. You guys don't want to miss this." Fitz told them as he and Simmons sat on the edge of the ramp. Skye, Will, Goose, Ward and May walked over as they were all handed beers. Skye didn't take one but Ward and May did. They sat down next to Fitz and Simmons while leaned against the wall and took a sip of beer. "So, it'll take about 180 days to reach the sun. Now, yes of course it would have been faster if they'd used Hydrogen-fueled APUs, but they're having fun."
"How many of those have you guys had?" Skye asked, seeing they were a bit wasted.
"Sk—Skye." Simmons did her best to hold her giggles. "It's important in the field to unwind from time to time."
"Yeah, yeah, especially after a hard day of everyone almost dying." Fitz pointed out.
"Which doesn't happen every day, right? It's an anomaly—an irregularity. Not…the norm." Simmons added.
"Speaking of not the norm whose idea was it in your plan to retake the plane was blowing a hole in it?" Coulson asked, as everyone stayed silent a bit before Skye spoke up.
"May said that the doors were tied to the pressurization, so I thought—"
"So, we thought it was the only way to release them." Simmons added.
"It was everyone's idea, sir." Ward told him.
"That was before we found out you were safe and Will helped you take the plane back and subdue all of Reyes men." Fitz finished.
"Nice work." Coulson told them as he looked over at Will who was smirking.
"Looks like they're a team." He stated, taking a sip of beer as they heard that the shuttles were ready for takeoff.
"Oh, time for blastoff." Fitz then covered his nose to sound like a NASA computer. It was funny. "Launching…in three…two…"
They all managed to see the shuttle take off in the distance and it was quite a remarkable sight. Not everyone could see it so this was special. Fitz and Simmons talked science a bit but Ward got them to stop so everyone could just enjoy the experience. Goose walked over to Coulson and sat down next to him and Will joined him. He pat him on the shoulder and the two watched the rocket go into the sky and on its way into the atmosphere. Skye's phone buzzed and it was an encrypted message with protocol from the Rising Tide. It read, Rising Tide in Holding pattern. Planning to go dark. What is your status? Skye looked at everyone and backed up a few steps before she replied with two words: I'm in.
After seeing the shuttle launch, the team got some rest and stayed on base at the Slingshot while the Bus was being fixed and retrofitted again. There wasn't a lot of damage but after hearing about what almost happened, Director Fury met with Coulson and Will on the plane. Coulson stood across from Director Fury while Will stayed back a bit, not wanting to incur Fury's wrath as he let Coulson have it.
"Really? Really, Coulson? Six days? It only took you six days to take a completely renovated piece of state-of-the-art machinery and nearly let it get hijacked or turned into scrap?!" Fury asked him.
"Yes, sir." Coulson replied.
"Do you know how much this plane costed? It's even got a bar, a really nice one." Fury remarked as he walked over and looked at a bottle of Scotch. "Perhaps I was a bit hasty in putting you back in the field if this is what you let happen to your plane? Are you ready for the field, Coulson?"
"Yes, sir."
"Well, it sure doesn't look like it." Fury told him. "I want all the damage done to this plane fixed just like it was before so don't go having Fitz-Simmons making modifications like a damn fish tank. And because you'd be in worse shape without him and he mentioned how he didn't get a nice plane after the Battle of New York, Agent Detmer is gonna be sticking around to keep an eye on you. To make sure that things are running smoothly and that another incident like this is avoided. Both of you are Level-8 so work it out together. Am I understood?!"
"Yes, sir." Will and Coulson replied.
"And the new girl. She's a risk." Fury told Coulson.
"I know, sir."
"You know, sir?" Fury asked as he walked past him. "Agent Detmer, make sure Coulson doesn't get himself killed again."
"Yes, sir." He replied as they watched Fury leave.
When he was gone, Coulson tapped his ear to talk to Fitz and Simmons. "Yeah, we're gonna have to kill the fish tank."
"You know…seeing as how I'm usually the one he yells at for doing something stupid or pissing him off, it's kind of nice when it happens to someone else for a change." Will remarked before looking at Coulson. "Looks like we're gonna be working together. This is gonna be fun."
"So long as you don't get me or the team into trouble." Coulson told him.
"Where's the fun in that?" He asked, earning a chuckle from Coulson. "So, want to get something to eat?"
"In a moment. There's something you should see. The mission we picked up Skye on involved an enhanced individual." Coulson told him.
"Mike Peterson, I know. I read the file on the flight over to Peru. Had some time to kill." He replied.
"Mike was involved in something known as Project Centipede. Whatever or whoever they are they have access to formulas and tech they shouldn't have…including Extremis." Coulson told him, instantly gaining Will's full attention.
"AIM." He said and Coulson nodded. "Looks Dr. Rappaccini and Dr. Tarleton have branched out. Show me what you have."
End of Chapter 11
1). Dr. Reed Richards of the soon to be Fantastic Four. Played by John Krasinski with the beard. A favorite fan casting for the character so we'll see who gets the role in the MCU.
2). Dr. Susan Storm of the soon to be Fantastic Four. Played by Emily Blunt.
3). Ben Grimm of the soon to be Fantastic Four. Played by Michael Chiklis. I thought he was great as Ben Grimm in the 2000s films. I'm curious to see who plays him next.
4). I know Monica's opinion on Carol are frosty in WandaVision but since I don't know exactly what caused it whether it was Carol never showing up again or not showing up with Maria got her cancer or whatever else happened, at the moment she still holds her in high regards until whatever causes her to change her mind. When the Marvels comes out, we'll know more but until then this is just me adjusting stuff for my story.
5). Elizabeth Betsy Braddock AKA Psylocke. Played by Olivia Munn. I know Psylocke in the comics has a huge history involving body swapping and her mind being put in a new body and the villain Mojo so I'm gonna simplify it. She's a mutant and her powers are telepathy and her psychic weapons.
6). Shiro Yoshida AKA Sunfire. An obscure character but I wanted to introduce more international characters in the story.
That's the end of chapter 11. Will and Coulson meet again and the team has officially been created. I hoped you guys like the chapter. Will's on the team now with Coulson and their adventures are gonna be interesting. Next chapter, Will and the team acclimate to one another as they take on missions like they would normally do but they also help Will on scrounging up leads and such for his various cases. While their initial interaction was unique and not ideal, they'll put that beside them as they get used to how Will runs things. They track down a kidnapped SHIELD asset and a mysterious female thief that causes some grief in the team. Until next time.
I hoped you guys liked this chapter. There's been more story development after the end of chapter 10 dealing with the X-men and mutants. Will's gotten a promotion and with it some new responsibilities and new information to be privy to. To those who were wondering why I had Will learn the truth about Coulson this early, I did that because to me it made the most sense. The second Will found out Coulson was alive or was told he was alive, as Fury said, he would have dug into the mind to figure out how and if he was the same person as before and would have noticed something odd in his mind. The only reason Fury told him is because he knew that he would have found out the truth on his own so this way, he can control it and have him look out for Will like May is doing. Is it unethical and wrong? Absolutely but I also feel it's how Fury would have handled the situation. And I figured it was also a way and reason for Will to be able to hang around Coulson and his team when realistically as a level-8 agent he would be off in the Hub, Triskelion or wherever leading mission teams or doing assignments. This way he sort of does both and can keep an eye on Coulson.
For those wondering why doesn't Will just tell Coulson the truth now, in the show we know that Coulson doesn't go psychotic after learning the truth but Will and Fury don't know that. Sure, Coulson is disturbed and there's the fact that he starts drawing the Kree symbols later on but he's fine. Will and Fury don't know that would be the case so they're operating from a place of precaution. But again, as Will has said, when Coulson is ready to know the truth he'll tell him and help him. It's beyond difficult and heartbreaking to have to lie to Coulson but he has to.
In the MCU, the Agents of SHIELD canon starts in September of 2013 whereas I started in in June of 2013 so we have three extra months to add which means more missions for the team and Will to undertake.
Will has met SWORD along with Maria and Monica Rambeau. Obviously, SWORD wasn't introducing until Wandavision and while it was hinted, it was never brought up so I'm introducing them early. That sequence with Will and the Rambeau's was difficult to plan out but I think it happened in the most logical way it should have. He's been introduced to another organization that Fury has ties to and that will play a role in the future and met two people who knew his mother and his reaction to them was rather vocal and angry. I hope you guys understand the reasoning for that. Also, I know that Monica in Wandavision has some kind of issue with Captain Marvel but since I don't know how, when or why that happened, at the moment she stills holds her in high regard and I'm thinking that Maria got her cancer diagnosis and Carol never came back or even showed up after she died then things got bad. That's just my presumption for my story so who knows the truth. Plus, we've got early Fantastic Four characters showing up. They'll come back in the future.
Some more of the mutants and X-men. We learn about Magneto who is hiding away on Genosha on his ever growing island of mutants but he won't stay hidden for long. And we've met one of the mutants on SHIELD's mutant index who works for them in Psylocke. Not every mutant will work for SHIELD, Psylocke will be the exception and we've got hints on a possible X-force creation. The Essex Corporation will have a role to play going forward. We haven't seen the last of them. And we've got more of the Inhumans along with laying down the foundation for what is gonna happen in the future.
Hoped you guys liked the update. My next updates are an Adventures in Multiverse update which I'll try to get out early in June then the Blue Wolf and Riverdale as well for the month of June. Hope you guys stay safe and have a happy Memorial Day.
