Ch 3 this one's exciting!!!
I looked at Soda almost for permission to leave the room. He nodded towards the door and I jumped up. I quickly walked down the hallway not wanting to leave Darry to wait for too long. When I walked into the living room the guys gave me an annoyed look. I decided to ignore it and I continued walking towards Darry who was holding the phone. I reached my hand out for him to hand it to me. He rolled his eyes but reluctantly hand me the phone.
Curly Shepard was my best buddy. He and I hung out all the time during the summer and when we could during the school year. Even though he was two years older than me. Neither Darry nor Soda were big fans of Currly. Mostly because he and Pony used to do dumb stuff all the time.
"Hey Curly" I said into the phone. "Hi Izzy" his gruff voice spoke. "Wanna do something?" He asked. "Sure" I said. I was eager to get out of the house anyway since I had sat around all morning. "Ask Pony if he wants to come too" Curly added. This wasn't unusual because Curly was friends with Ponyboy before he was friends with me.
I lowered the phone to my chest. "Pony" I said and his head preked up. "I'm gonna go meet up with Curly, wanna come?" He looked at Johnny who was sitting right next to him then to the gang. "Nah I'm good" he spoke. I gave him a small nod and raised the phone back up to my ear. "No" I said into the phone. "Alright I'll meet you at the lot" Curly said simply as he hung up.
I hung the phone back on wall and turned around to see Darry standing in front of me with his arms crossed. "Oh come on Darry" I pleaded "Please let me go" he looked at me more closely. "Fine" he finally said. "But don't be too long" he added. "Thanks!" I said and jumped into him for a hug. Unlike the rest of the gang I liked showing affection. I didn't think it made you weak to show those you loved that you loved them.
Before he could even return the gesture I pulled away. I went into down the hallway and snuck into the room Soda and Pony shared. I quietly dug around Ponys desk until I found an unopened box of cigarettes. I slipped the small box into my pocket and slid out the bedroom door.
I pulled my white sneakers on and walked towards the front door. "Oh and Izzy" Darry said. I turned around to face him "Don't forget the rules" he said seriously. I turned away from him and rolled my eyes. "I won't" I mumbled on my way out the door. Darry had enforced a list of 5 rules that applied to me when I was with Curly. Number one: I was not to under any circumstance go anywhere near Buck Merrill's place.
That one was easy because I didn't want anything to do with Buck Merrill. But Curly went there sometimes which is why he put it in place. Number Two: No doing stupid things. This was a loose rule and I broke it almost every time I was with Curly. I didn't know what exactly Darry considered stupid, but most of the things we did I knew Darry would consider stupid. Number three: we were not allowed to go on the train tracks.
I understood why Darry put that in place. Teens got killed all the time but trains because they were messing around near their tracks. Number four: I had to be back by curfew. My curfew was ten o'clock which wasn't too hard to follow. And last but not least number five: I was not to kiss or do anything of the sort with Curly Shepard. No matter how many times I told my brothers and the gang that me and Curly were and would always just be friends, they didn't seem convinced.
I made the short walk to the lot and easily spotted Curly sitting on the curb. I walked up to him and threw the pack of cigarettes at his face. Curly's older brother Tim had banned him from smoking after he was caught steeling a few boxes. I knew he would be going through withdrawal.
To my surprise he caught them right before they hit his face. He grinned at my attempt to hit him. He looked down at the box. "Thanks" he said as he opened the box and took one out. I sat down beside him on the curb so he could have a smoke. I watched as he fought the wind to light his cigarette. Once it was lit he put his lighter back into his pocket and took a long drag.
"What are we gonna do?" I asked him curiously. He puffed out the smoke before he answered "I was thinking we could go swipe a couple of beers over at the gas station" Curly said coolly. I gave him a look. Curly knew I didn't drink, Darry would kill me. Plus the stuff tasted awful. He glanced at me and rolled his eyes. "I'll get you a Pepsi" he said obviously annoyed.
"Okay" i heard my voice squeak. I laid back onto the grass till I was staring up at the clouds. "What time do you got to be home?" Curly questioned without looking at me. "Not till curfew, but I want to be back earlier cause I think we are gonna play football" I said. He nodded but stayed quiet.
We sat in silence for a minute before Curly spoke up. "Did you hear about Alex?" He asked me. Alex was a soc that went to my school and was in the same grade as me. "No" I said sitting up on my elbows waiting for a response. "He's practically telling every soc that you'll be his girl by the end of summer" Curly laughed. I shook my head and laid back down before I answered.
"Not a chance" I retorted. "Why?" Curly questioned. I gave him a funny look. He's got to be joking I thought to myself. "He's a soc" I said simply, "I would never go out with a soc" What Curly said about Alex bugged me. I hated how Alex went around talking about me like I was some expensive item he could buy.
Curly stood up and put his hand out in front of me to help me up. I dodged his hand and hopped to my feet on my own. He dropped his hand to his side. "You have quite the attitude little missy" he joked. I gave him a playful glare.
We walked to the gas station and I waited outside while Curly went in to get us drinks. When he came out he handed me the Pepsi that was under his arm and we walked to the drive in movie theater. It was only 2:30 and the drive in didn't open until at least 9:00 so the place was empty. We sat in the dust and enjoyed our drinks.
When we were finished we walked back to Curly's house. When we walked in I saw Tim, Curlys older brother and the leader of the Shepard gang sitting on the couch watching tv. He looked up and when he saw me he smiled.
"Hey Izzy-girl" he beamed and he turned his attention back to the tv. I looked down at my wrist and realized it was 3:00. I wanted to be back to my house by 3:30 so i figured I should start walking. "I would probably get going" I said to Curly. He was sitting on the couch pulling his shoes off. "Okay" Curly said disappointingly.
"Do you need a ride?" Tim asked still not looking away from the TV. A ride would be nice but I didn't want to be annoying. "I think I'll walk but thanks" I said to Tim. I walked out the door and started my 30 minute walk home. I was halfway home when I saw a black mustang come up on me. I tried to ignore it but I was getting nervous.
I turned to look at the car and I locked eyes with the driver. The car whipped around in front of me and 6 socs pilled out. I I got real scared especially when I recognized one of them as Alex's older brother. I knew they were looking for me. My hands got really sweaty all the sudden and adrenaline pumped through my veins.
They slowly circled me smiling. I hoped that the gang would come across me and fight off the socs but nobody came to my rescue. I felt somebody's hands land on my shoulders and I flinched. "Alex was right" the cold voice whispered into my ear "You are very pretty" I could smell liquor on his breath even though it was only three o'clock.
"I hope you understand that I can't have my brother liking greasy trash like you" the voice snickered from behind me. I was frozen like a statue and they got closer. Alex's brother slowly walked in front of me surveying my face.
"Your nose is much too symmetrical" he laughed "well do you a favor and fix that right up for you" he growled. He pulled his fist back and I knew what was coming. His fist connected with my right cheek and eye so hard it caused my neck to snap to the side. I saw black dots clutter my vision. Before I could compose myself another blow hit my jaw.
I less prepared this time and I stumbled backward. I looked up and saw them all laughing at me. Something inside me broke loose. I lunged at Alex's brother throwing my fist into his nose. I felt it crack under my knuckles. He he started to curse but before he could finish I hit him again in the jaw. His eyes were firery with rage and I knew I was in for it.
All at once all six of them started beating me like wild animals I got several punches to my face, ribs, and chest. Someone was kicking my shins and pounding my back. I threw as many punches as I could but I was getting pummeled. A foot connected with the side of my ankle I I felt it break right from under me. I yelped and hit the ground. They kept kicking me and kicking me. One kick to the head and I was out cold.
