Update
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten this story, just that it took me a lot of willpower and time to get back into the swing of things. I promise you, we will get to the sexy, smutty good stuff… around two chapters later because I have a very specific vision I have to execute first. But until then, get comfy under your blankets, get some tea and relax.
Brandishing the blade, he swathed through the shrubbery and overgrowth. Though a normally taxing and exhausting task, Ash had grown accustomed to clearing off the tall grasses and creeping vines that encroached too close to home. But more than anything, the mindless cutting keeps his mind preoccupied from the conversation he had with the fair ladies of Pallet yesterday. He sighed at the trim grass and sat on a tree stump for some much needed rest, the young man wiped away the beads of sweat gathered on his forehead and lodged the machete into the tree.
"Pika!" The affable electric type sat next to him and offered an oran berry for refreshments, earning a head pat to the young mouse as it bit on the berries that grew in their garden. Ash chuckled at his starter's antics before a pensive expression took over him. No matter how much he preoccupied himself with self-sparring, gathering materials or training his pokemon, his mind would still linger on the conversation they had the night before.
It was a stormy night, gale winds high and torrential rain flooded the roads. His mother had just prepared tomato cabbage stew with sauteed mushrooms and chives. She was stirring the stewpot when a pair of muscular hands wrapped around her waist. She sighed at the wandering fingers and leaned against the inhouse molester, feeling the broad chest and strong arms holding her tightly to him.
"Ash, I'm busy." Her body betrayed her strict parental tone, he could feel her shivering body that craved affection from him. He squeezed her tighter and leaned against her ear, pushing his pelvis against her rear before inhaling the scent of her perfume.
"Need any help?" Delia gripped the ladle of the pot and leaned her head on his shoulder, a stern yet flushed expression on her face was the sexiest sight to Ash. It was the tug of war between her carnal desires and keeping up appearances that had her groaning in frustration. She tugged the arm that held her waist and pry them off her, it's not even dinner yet and he's getting frisky already.
"Yes, please let go so I can continue to be busy." The dashing young son pouted but obliged nevertheless. Heavy storms just make it difficult to get anything done, confined to the indoors with nothing to do, Ash grumbled and let go of her.
"Fine." The auburn haired mother ignored the childish grumbles and ruffled his hair. The scent of perfume that lingered on her son's body told her that Xenia had been spending time with him, intimately so even. The wrinkled clothing also seemed to tell her that the young Jenny practically hugged her Ash like a warm pillow during the cold weather. Does he have a set routine of which girl to visit now? Morning for Xenia and afternoon for little old Delia?
"Get the others okay? They should know it's time for dinner."
"Don't worry about us, I recognize the smell of Delia's cooking anywhere!" As if on cue, Aurea appeared behind them with the rest of the ladies. Ash nearly jolted back when the extroverted professor placed her hands on his shoulders and pinned her body against him. Bewitched by her spell, the young man stammered and bashfully averted his gaze from her when she peered her chin on his shoulders.
"Delia, you should have asked me to help. I could have leech some of your cooking skills." The strawberry haired nurse has grown fond of cooking given the lack of other leisure activities and with recipes quickly running out, Rosa was keen on developing her culinary skills to new heights in this apocalyptic world.
"Hehe sorry Rosa, but I really wanted to try this new recipe." Seeing the two ladies gushing over the ingredients, heat intensity and the complex chemistry that goes behind cooking, Ash decided to make himself useful by being the professional table setter he is.
"I will go set up the tables." Pikachu saluted and assisted his master with his task, they placed the forks and knives across the tables. The cloth that draped over the dinner table was meticulously knitted from various pieces of cloth. With the stew finally done and piping hot for consumption, the auburn haired mother excitedly placed the stew on the table with everyone present.
"Smells amazing Delia, thank you for cooking for us." There was something heartwarming about eating a hearty dish together in a thunderstorm. Aurea sighed inwardly and stared at Xenia and Rosa, the two looked thoroughly unease with what they had in store for the oblivious mother and son duo.
"The rain has been relentless, I wonder if it will last the whole night?" Delia's attempt at small talk was met with deafening silence, she turned to the girls and felt a little strange they were just staring at her and Ash with a discomfort expression.
"Delia, Ash." The silence was broken by Aurea who took the lead, the professor crossed her arm on the table and eyed them with the cold calculative eyes fit for a judge.
"Yes?" The young Ketchum instinctively braved for another long hard conversation. This wasn't their first rodeo with conversations like these, last time was about Aurea overworking, Xenia not following set protocol or Ash being a dumbass at times.
Nothing prepared the Ketchum family for this.
"Can we talk about your relationship with one another?" Instinctively, Ash gripped the table tight and assumed a more serious and discomfort expression. Cold steel eyes of obvious discontent gaze back at Aurea while Delia was more diplomatic and stoic with how she portrayed herself in the situation. Both mother and son was well aware what was coming, they were too obvious after all.
"What about it?" With no one willing to take the first step to break the tension, Xenia sighed and crossed her arms. The officer of the law raised her voice amidst the backdrop of the pouring rain and booming thunder.
"Delia, don't play coy with us, we know." Their fate was sealed at the moment, Ash clenched his fists on his lap with his heart rapidly pounding. What do they do now? They had yet to discuss the possibility of others finding out and now they aren't ready to face the music yet.
"You and Ash are together as lovers right?" The damning statement from Aurea placed the final nail in the coffin. Yet sensing her son's distress and skyrocketing anxiety, Delia interlocked Ash's hand to comfort him. She is not going to let them intimidate her son or shaming him.
"Yes we are." The forward confession from Delia stunned most of the girls, they thought they would have to drag the information out of them. Ash, who remained virtually silent for the most part, decided to put his foot down and assert his authority as her lover.
"We love each other, is it wrong?" For Xenia, it wasn't the matter of morality or ethics, it was the matter of safety and trust. If they are going to survive this law broken world, they would need to wholeheartedly trust one another.
"It's incest Ash." The words muttered from Xenia were met with two fists slamming on the table, kicking up the plates, cutleries and spilling water onto the table. The seething anger from Ash silenced everyone in the room with his hazel brown eyes were devoid of their usual warmth and kindness.
"I don't give a damn about that, if you're against our relationship, you are more than welcome to leave this town." The very people whom he swore to care and protect cowered in silence. Wordlessly, they averted their gaze from him and stared at the table. Appalled by her son's aggressive and uncalled for behavior, Delia gripped his arm and sternly told him off.
"Ash!" He ignored the solid grip on his wrist and stood up right, raising his voice to make it clear to everyone in the room that he is not having any objection to their forbidden union. He built this town up with his very hands, and he would do well to remind them who is in charge, and who rescued them when they were near death's door.
"I have traveled all the way from Saffron to Pallet Town just for mom, I'm not letting anything or anyone tear us apart!" Aurea softened her gaze and walked towards him to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. She remained unfazed when he flinched and shoved her away, she needed him to listen to reason.
"Ash, please calm down. I understand your defensiveness but let us have a proper discussion about this. Please? No one here wants to separate you two." The vigorous nods from everyone and the absolute uncomfortable silence made the young man realize that he perhaps overreacted. Delia squeezed his shoulder and hugged his arms, clinging onto him with her nose buried into the crook of his neck. Calmed and cleared from his initial anger, Ash backed down and muttered his apologies before sitting back down.
"Thank you Ash, we just want to know how this relationship started." Xenia, Rosa and Aurea listened in silence with Delia doing most of the explanation. The gaping hole in her heart left by her ex-husband, how her reliance on Ash's for comfort and companionship manifested into a reluctance of letting him go, the uncertainty of a doom world where options of choosing a trusted partner remains scarce and the natural affinity and closeness between mother and son who loved each other deeply. Tears were spilled and Delia bitterly expressed her frustration and her loneliness. It was a difficult conversation, so much so that Ash held her hand and kissed her tenderly to comfort her when she mentioned her lowest point in her life.
It became clear to the group that separating or dividing the pair would be devastating to their overall survival and morale. Aurea wiped away her own tears from listening to Delia's story and cleared her throat, her puffy red eyes and tear stains were still evident. It was just heart-wrenching hearing someone's unrestrained feelings about the horrible aspects of their life. To rob that happiness and separate the very person who is the only light in her life would be nothing short of cruel.
"Thank you Delia, I know it's incredibly difficult for you. We're glad you found someone you love wholeheartedly. We have discussed this in private, and we are okay with it, genuinely! We just want to be open about this, that's all." With their position well known to the Ketchums, Ash who remained silent throughout the conversation spoke up with his voice slightly raspy.
"I'm sorry everyone, I didn't mean to- I just don't want to be separated from mom." The downcast expression from him were replaced with a flustered smile when Xenia and Rosa hugged him close to them. The Joy and Jenny duo ruffled his hair with Xenia kissing the side of his cheek tenderly.
"Ash we understand, you love her and you don't want to lose her. We understand, your devotion and dedication is commendable. It's a hard topic to discuss openly but I'm glad we managed to take the first step." The bold action from the officer drew a whistle from Aurea. There's so much taboo steamy action going on today that it really takes away the emotional gravity of their situation. Delia, impressed by Xenia's understanding and empathetic nature, sat closer and placed a hand on her's.
"Xenia, since we are on the topic of honesty, how do you feel about my Ash?" The sudden whiplash of a question jerked the young Jenny back. She averted her gaze and sighed at the complicated mess of a relationship they find themselves in. Part of her wished she could have Ash by herself and yet another part of her conceded that an open relationship would be the best option going forward given their limited group size and circumstances.
"I- I don't know, you're in a relationship with him and it feels wrong to- you know." Delia eyed her and smiled softly, she sat on top of Ash's lap and clasped the officer's hand.
"Xenia, would you be open to the idea of loving my son?" The string of words from her was followed by Ash looking absolutely livid of his mother straddling on top of his lap for the world to see. Xenia, Aurea and Rosa smirked at the poor boy's embarrassment but were pleased with the more comfortable display of affection from both parties.
"You mean polygamy right?" Delia gave a curt nod, there was no beating around the bush. What she is suggesting here would fundamentally change the whole group dynamic. It wasn't something they should celebrate about, but confronting the issue head on works best for all parties.
"Yes, we have discussed this, would you be interested?" It was a conflicting clash of ideals. The innate desire to be with someone and the harsh reality of needing to share them with someone else. In a sense, Xenia would be losing out if she says no and given how much time Ash and her would be spending together, it would be awkward if she rejected this and Arceus knows that they are living on borrowed time everyday.
"I don't know, I find the idea weird and strange. It's weird enough that you and him are together, to add me in just feels like the third-wheel." The frank conversation was interrupted by Rosa who cleared her throat. They seemed to be forgetting about Ash's feelings and how he personally felt about this. Leader or not, he is still a young child who is still growing up and unfamiliar with his emotions and feelings. In truth, Rosa was still uneasy over the fact a minor is involved in the equation and she will keep a keen eye on these ladies going forward.
"How does Ash feel about this first?" All eyes were on him and the pressure made Ash sink lower to his chair subconsciously. Pikachu squeaked and patted his shoulders, hoping his trainer can navigate through this tangling webs of complications.
"I- I'm not sure. I really like Xenia, she takes good care of me and taught me the ropes. I will be happy to have her but I know I'm asking too much at this point." Aurea rolled her eyes over how frowny and melodramatic everyone is behaving here. So as long as they can agree they like each other enough to pursue a relationship, whatever comes next can be solved through communication and dialogue. No need for this song and dance between relationships, they have more practical issues to worry about.
"A relationship, regardless of their nature, comes from both parties' trust with one another. If all of you can agree to the terms and agreements, then there is no harm trying. Courtship comes in different forms and in our uncertain world, why not take the chance?" The honest and fed up tone was deflected by Xenia assuming a deadpanned look. What the officer is hearing is that Aurea too wants to join in the fray.
"Aurea don't project your desires onto us." The esteemed Unovan researched raised both hands in defense, shrugging the accusation off with the faintest of stutters.
"Hey I'm just saying!" Delia sighed and wrapped her arms around her son's neck, snuggling against his body when she felt a familiar source of warmth stirring between her legs. She glanced at her son and smiled at his crimson cheeks as he readjusted his sitting.
"You too Juniper?" The livid tone from Rosa was met with Aurea crossing her legs with one hand on her tea cup.
"Well Ash is certainly a catch. I don't mind being with a young man given I'm not getting younger and the pool of suitable men of my exquisite taste has practically all dried up now. This is all for fun and fling of course, but I don't mind a serious and steady relationship with Ash if we ever come to that." The softer tone at the end made Ash gulped at the absolute ridiculous situation he found himself in. Though Aurea's words had some truth in them, it made Ash wonder if the population of healthy and virile men has truly gone down the drain since the infection began.
'Logically speaking, guys would be drafted to conscription right?' If chivalry dictates, the most vulnerable populations like elderly, women, and children would be prioritized in the event of a calamity. Unfortunately, Ash already suspected that the Kanto government chose the other path. Death, disease and depression, name a worse trio.
"Don't look at me, I have no interest in dating Ash." He snapped out from his train of thought and watched his mother, Xenia and Aurea grilling Rosa into admitting her feelings for him, to which Rosa had none. Xenia sighed and crossed her arms, who knew these complications of feelings would be the most headache inducing thing they faced during a zombie apocalypse.
"Gosh- how would this even work?" The irritable tone was calmed down by Ash tugging her hands, interlocking their fingers together. It was time he gave some input into the relationship and gave his thought on this.
"We can go at your pace, I'm just happy to be with all of you. We can be friends or more, depending on what you want." Xenia squeezed back his hand, he can be a little too accommodating to their needs sometimes.
"Ash, that is not how a relationship works, it's not a one-way street. What do you want?" The young teenager lowered his gaze and held his mother tighter to his chest. Everything he has ever done so far was for the sake of this community and the ones who cared for him. What he wants was just them being by his side.
"I want all of you to stay safe. I don't want to lose any of you, having all of you by my side makes me happy." It was the answer they expected but it was the heartfelt sincerity and genuine tone that made their heart race nevertheless. Aurea smiled and walked towards the young man, snaking her arms around his neck.
"Alright, we'll make it work then."
The vivid flashback came to an abrupt end and Ash found himself staring at the long stretch of grass he cleaved earlier. He sighed and rubbed his face, technically he is dating 3 people now and one of them is his mom. A reality that he had trouble comprehending even now, maybe Arceus had already decided his fate in the distortion world already.
'Granted we are in an experimental phase, but gosh would it be awkward. I've never been in a relationship before, much less in an open one where everyone is free to get out of it anytime they want. Perhaps it's for the best too, less heartbreak in the long run.' The gentle wind of the afternoon sun kissed his hair. Ash closed his eyes for a moment when he heard the sound of his furry friends scurrying towards him.
"Sen!" Alarmed by the sentry pokemon's piercing cry, Ash ran towards her and squatted down with the normal type waving her limbs frantically to grab his attention. Even the omnipresent Pikachu seemed to have wandered off, presumably to check out the threat Sentret saw.
"Sentret what's wrong?" She pointed up the sky, flailing her arms and ears that something was coming from the skies. It didn't take long before the familiar buzzing sound of a helicopter came to his vicinity. Ash's eyes dilated at the sight of the metallic construct floating above, how long had it been when they had contact with the outside world?
"A chopper?" He threw caution out of the wind when the chopper finally came to the view. As he expected, it bore the insignia of the Kanto Military Corps, accompanying the military grade chopper was a squadron of Skarmories and Charizards escorting the aircraft. His hazel brown eyes widened when the helicopter seemed to be descending into the nearby clearing which triggered his fight or flight instincts.
"Makuhita Bulk up on stand by." Unleashing his brawler out, the fighting type nodded and started to increase his offensive and defensive capabilities to new heights in preparation with a confrontation. Ash unhooked the machete from the log and sheathed in his leather scabbard, he was careful not to wield a direct weapon in front of the military lest they think him of a threat. He swiftly ran towards the nearby clearing and slowly halted his steps gale winds kicked up by the rotor blades of the helicopter came to a stand still. His moment of disbelief was shattered when the door of the helicopter was wide opened.
"Ash!" Before he could even get his bearings and adjust to the reality of the situation, the familiar if not sorely missed voice of a woman froze Ash's perception of time and reality. The beautiful woman ran towards him and embraced him tightly, placing a hand behind his head and squeezing him tight to her. On instinct, Ash wrapped his arms around her and the comforting body that he shared a night with instantly had him at ease.
"R-Roxanne, you're here!" The Hoenn teacher cupped his cheeks and rubbed them softly with her thumb. She shed a teary smile and giggled at Ash's disbelief expression. It's been so long since she last saw him and now he looked so much more rugged, stronger and even taller now. His muscular fingers danced between her shoulders and slowly down to her waist, pulling her voluptuous body to him.
"I missed you Ash." Her voice trembled and her arms tightened around his neck. Her red ruby eyes that he adored were laced with a storm of emotions that Ash didn't hesitate to wipe away her tears with his thumb. His teacher looked radiant and beautiful as ever, and the bright smile he sorely missed came to the precious view.
"Me too Roxanne." It was a tender moment, two souls who deeply care for each other, providing solace and comfort to one another in dire times. Despite their short time together, there was a sense that they could persevere through everything should they stay together. In another life, things could have been different for them. Yet despite the heartfelt reunion and the supple hugs, Roxanne was not the only one excited to see Ash.
"I didn't know Ash and Miss Roxanne are like that." Ash broke from the hug and stared at the cutesy voice he was oddly familiar with. The raven haired child almost had a mental breakdown when he saw May, Dawn and Risa waving to him. He barely could believe his eyes and wondered if the Legendaries above had started to toy him and his mental fortitude.
"M-May, Dawn, Risa! W-Why are you here too?" The ladies chuckled but smiled warmly at him nevertheless. They looked good, Dawn and May wore a ponytail hairstyle while wearing black tank top and a pair of long cargo pants. Risa still looked the same but that didn't stop her from running towards him to embrace him in a nice snuggly hug. The supple warmth of the older teeanger made Ash smile and he rubbed her back softly, perhaps she still remembers his heroic efforts of saving her. The Pallet Town native sighed and leaned against her hair when he felt a piercing pressure staring right through his skull. He slowly turned towards the source of the direction and was absolutely gobsmacked when he saw the mysterious and cold pair of fuchsia coloured eyes staring at him.
"L-Lady Sabrina?" Beautiful, ruthless and devoid of emotions, the stoic and cold Lady of Saffron had decided to show up casually in his hometown. She was equally deadly as she is beautiful. Why is someone of great importance and significance in his hometown during a zombie apocalypse perplexed Ash, hell this entire situation where everyone is showing up is a fever dream. Why are they all here right now?
"Well isn't this a heartwarming sight." The gruff voice of a veteran soldier broke his moment of stupor. Dressed in his kevlar and combat helmet, the soldier who rescued them in Saffron appeared with his assault rifle hoisted on his shoulders.
"Biggs? Arceus, why is everyone here?" Near wits end, Ash was expecting Lance himself to show up now too. The raven haired teen slowly let go of Risa and walked up to the unit of a man. Biggs whistled at Ash's glow up and extended his hand outwards, to which Ash firmly shook his hand.
"I will be damned, you made it kid and you fortified the place too. Jenkins would be proud of ya." The offhand comment about Jenkins and the pensive smile from him drew concerns from Ash.
"Jenkins is-"
"Died in line of duty, damn infected pokemon don't know when to give up. They were waiting for us, attacking our convoy around 8 PM. But looks you made it in one piece, so let's celebrate that yeah? "As they break off the handshake, Ash feels a paper-like texture slid between the palm of his hands. The two men steeled gaze with one another before Ash slowly retreated that hand into the pocket, pretending none the wiser.
Rapid footfalls and the sound of Growlithe barking drew their attention, Roxanne's lips curled upwards when a group of women showed up with Xenia firmly holding a firearm in her hand. The police officer sheathed the gun once she saw the insignia of the helicopter and Ash's calm and relaxed demeanour.
"Ash!" The raven haired teen turned and welcomed his lovers and friend to his side. Delia stared at the group of girls and found it amusing that they were all standing close to her Ash.
"Who are these people?"
"Ah let me introduce them, this is my mom Delia! This is Xenia, an officer, Rosa our nurse and-" Aurea beat him to the punch by holding Roxanne's arms with a smile on her face. The two ladies hugged each other briefly before parting arms.
"Professor Juniper, it's been a while." The Unova beauty nodded and gave a side eye to Sabrina.
"It has, it gladdens my heart to see you Roxanne and you too Sabrina, you really grew into such a beauty now!" The Saffron native merely nodded, crossing her arms beneath her ample chest and keenly eyeing Ash throughout the conversation. The young man paid no mind to her staring and introduced everyone who boarded the chopper to his community.
"This is Roxanne, my teacher, May and Dawn, friends of mine- wait, are we friends?" Dawn rested a wry smile, is he really asking that question now? Nice to see he is still a bit of a dork and untampered by the hellscape they found themselves in.
"Yes we are, we hangout in the cafe." Delia leaned on her son and observed the group dynamics, what became glaringly obvious was the ratio men to women and suffice to say, she was not pleased that the newcomers are all women. Xenia on the other hand was more practical and prudent as to how and why a group of soldiers from the Kanto Military had decided to bring a group of survivors here.
"Biggs is it? How did you find us?" The commando stood strong and tall, displaying his pride and urgency of the matter with a deeper voice.
"Contrary to what people think, the army and the government have not fallen yet. In fact, we are launching an offensive to recapture Saffron City and wipe the infected clean. Once military communications were restored, we picked up radio frequencies from various survivor groups scattered across Kanto. It was then decided that we should send survivors capable of handling their own to there in a bid of regaining ground and relieving population pressure in military camps. Miss Roxanne and the lovely ladies here all personally volunteered upon hearing that Pallet Town is up for grabs." Xenia nodded in response, it made sense that the military is beginning to send capable survivors out, they do not need to be protected and are capable of fending themselves. Resources are dwindling day by day and they can scarcely afford to maintain order with limited manpower.
Roxanne stood forward and placed a hand on Ash's shoulder, squeezing it tightly as she gazed into his hazel brown ones.
"We knew you were heading to Pallet Town and since there are radio frequencies, it means you have restored the power or at least established a foothold here. But we won't know until we come ourselves… we're glad we did." Biggs glanced between the supposed teacher and student, good Arceus the tension is so thick you cut through it. He cleared his throat and asserted his importance as information relayer, now was not the time to be handsy and mushy.
"We scouted out the area beforehand of course, the last thing we want is our chopper seized by bandits or insurgency forces. Once we confirmed that a young man with a Pikachu was indeed in the area, we flew here as quickly as possible." The electric mouse found it amusing that the military's identification of Ash in Pallet Town was through him. Maybe he has what it takes to be a mascot, taking the world by the storm by his adorable and affable nature.
Gray storm clouds rolling from above made the commanding soldier sigh, it was time to get a move on or Shadow would not stop complaining about the weather again.
"As much as I like to chat, we need to move out soon. Don't worry about your classmates, they are all safe in the quarantine zone. The infected numbers lowered with each passing day, many of them had lost their strength or turned to cannibalism." Ash furrowed his eyebrows, critical information has been acquired. The infected would eat each other when there is no prey?
"So they would consume themselves if there are no humans?" Biggs nodded curtly. Experiments have been put out after drones and scouts noticed that the infected began attacking one another, the carnivorous bloodbath that drenched the streets was hard to watch but the results were abundantly clear. Starve them, and they would turn on themselves, just like the rules of nature.
"Yeap, but when that happens, expect things to get especially chaotic and rowdy. Driven mad by hunger, they are like rabid pokemon shredding everything in their path." The raven haired child honestly finds that hard to believe. Considering that infected pokemon and humans never seemed to feast on corpses, how is it they manage to sustain themselves? Many zombie tropes actually never addressed the issue of zombie starvation and now Ash can see why. Maybe they are driven by rage and not hunger?
"We will talk in another time, stay safe everyone, please look after each other." Ash waved the soldier farewell as the girls went over to his side. The pilot of the chopper Shadow gave a courtesy gesture to the group before the commanding officer boarded the chopper and they slowly took flight. As the helicopter ascended to the air and the hasty reunion was cut short, Ash frowned and narrowed his eyes at the horrific implications of what's about to happen.
'Wasting precious fuel just to get a few survivors here… they are using us as bait aren't they? Everyone here has at least a high level or starter pokemon, no way they aren't luring the infected here from Viridian's side so they can retake the city. Using a chopper to attract attention and lead them to the town is also a surefire way to rouse up the horde.' The timing is undeniable and the fact gym leaders are placed here shows the military willingness to sacrifice them just to secure Viridian City. He placed his hand into his pocket and felt the paper card in his fingertips, surprised arrivals and secret messages, just what is going on?
"Pleased to meet your Roxanne, my son has told me so much about you." Delia shook the hand of Ash's teacher, she eyed her composure, body and features. The Hoenn teacher honestly bears a striking resemblance to herself in terms of soft spoken personality mixed with authoritative sternness. Maybe that's why Ash likes her so much, flattering and a little creepy to be honest.
"Likewise Delia, it's great to finally see the person who raised such a fine young man." The fine young man stared at the two, watching his mother conversing with his teacher is probably the worst thing to happen to him now given their taboo relationship.
'Oh Arceus, how am I going to hide this relationship?' Pikachu patted his trainer's pure white face, wondering if he had seen Giratina himself given how shook it was. But a warm hand from May and Dawn broke his stupor, they each gave him a hug which surprised him given they weren't really close in the first place.
"It's good to see a friendly face, Ash." The soft and emotionally strained tone from the two made Ash keenly realize the severe toll on their mental health, making his problems borderline trivial when compared to them. He gave each of them a hug, lingering fingers danced between their hair and back.
"Same here." The booming thunder and the forked lightning drew attention to the indoors, they best have their conversation there.
"Come on, let's head inside." Leading the charge, Archeops and Growlithe prowled forward as their sharp eyes darted around to ensure no stray infected seized their chance to sneak in. Risa took particular interest in the cuddly Sentret and welcomed her in her arms, much to the scout pokemon's delight. Sabrina widened her eyes at the fortress-like structure, tough palisade walls with vicious spikes to deter pokemon from climbing over, little watchtowers that scattered across the walls. But as intimidating as the outside is, the survivors of Saffron were surprised by how cozy and homely the laboratory is. Everything here is so neat and tidy, with plants, warm lightning and wooden trinkets placed across the shelfs.
"Wow, is it really okay for us to stay?" May instantly went to the comfy bean bag cushions and squealed at the cozy interior, it felt like a nice vacation home meant for tourists! Delia smiled when Dawn and Risa also joined in the fun, plopping down next to the brunette with the couch cushions firmly in their arms.
"Of course it is, extra hands make for light work." The girls stared at Delia and stood up immediately, placing both hands together with the utmost determination burning in their eyes.
"We will do what we can to contribute." Those strings of words brought a smile to Xenia, now that is more like it. As good as it is to help people and welcome the girls, practicality wise they must contribute or help around to prove their usefulness to the group and overall survival.
"Well first things first, let's discuss how things work here. Follow me." The war room as Xenia called it was now filled to the brim with documents, files and posters of Pallet Town's management. From battle tactics, google maps of the surrounding area and a planning board, the fate of Pallet Town's development rests in this room. But today they aren't planning for a supply run or voting on building a rain catcher, today they are here to establish ground rules that everyone must follow. With everyone present, Xenia raised her voice and assert her authority as officer and chief.
"Delia here is in charge of housekeeping and stock management, she is responsible for setting up the weekly town hall and the agendas. Essentially, she is the mama of the group." Delia smiled sweetly and waved her hand to everyone, earning nods from the teenagers who sorely missed their parents at home.
"I am in charge of defense and training our pokemon. Those walls you see are built by Ash, myself and the help of the pokemon. All of your pokemon would be required to undergo daily training and drilling sessions with me. Our foe is constantly evolving, so our strategies must evolve with them too." Roxanne and Sabrina nodded in agreement, coordinating defenses and destroying their foes is their expertise.
"Rosa here is our nurse, if you're sick or injured please find her at your convenience. Although the Healing Machine doesn't work, we have our own adorable Chansey here ready to provide you and your pokemon yummy eggs." The oval pokemon waved its feelers with Rosa patting its head, such adorable sights drew awws and gasp from every occupant in the room.
"Professor Juniper is our resident scientist. Her role is more administrative and research base, we are still piecing together how the infection began and the behavior of the infected. Her counsel and advice is also much appreciated, so if you need a professional's advice please go to her." The Unovan professor placed a hand on her chest and spoke with a dramatic flair.
"If you also need someone to talk to please visit me, I get awfully lonely in the lab and no one visits me." The chuckles from the room was silenced when an oblivious Ash spoke innocently. He frequently visits her all the time at night to get information or just to talk.
"I do professor." A wicked glint sparkled in Aurea's eyes, oh she loves it when a considerate and kind soul falls into her trap.
"Oh yes you do, but well- we shouldn't talk about this in public Ash! It's e-embarrassing." The bashful and flushed expression from her and the avoidance of eye contact made everyone stare at Ash. Some were impressed by Ash's ability to go after older women and some were not pleased with his debonair like attitude.
"W-What?" Delia sighed at Ash's response and patted his head, her little Ash can be so clueless sometimes.
"Don't mind Juniper, she likes teasing the poor boy." Roxanne eyed Ash's expression, the bashful and flushed cheeks were adorable but she was also aware that is the only boy around town. It made sense he would be the target of their teasing, although lighthearted she also had to make sure they don't overstep their boundaries given her experience as a teacher.
"Not my fault he is fun to tease." Xenia ignored the grumbling from the professor and pushed Ash to the spotlight, uh quite literally by making him stand under the lantern of the room.
"Anyway! Last but certainly not least, Ash! Our leader of the group." The emphasis of Ash's title of status was made apparent by Xenia, drawing a myriad of reactions from the newcomers. All this time, they thought Xenia called the shots here with how much she keeps in charge. This fundamentally changed the group dynamics as they thought Ash was just a follower.
"Really?" Xenia nodded to Roxanne's question.
"Yes, although his age and appearance may speak otherwise, the reason we managed to survive this long is because of him. He frequently explores outside of the town and conducts surveillance on threats looming beyond them. He is also the one who strategizes our defense and is the one who often commands our pokemon in battle. In fact, we had our first successful defense against the infected!" Gazes of admiration and pride quickly overwhelmed Ash, he meekly stood in his mother's arms as he never liked to be complimented so glowingly in front of others. Delia giggled at his response and gave him a snuggly hug from behind.
"I'm very proud of you Ash." The soft expression from his teacher and the absolute validation from her made Ash smiled widely like a goofball. To be able to impress Miss Roxanne and hear her verbally say she is proud of him made him feel mushy inside. As hardened he is by the infected world, he is still vulnerable to compliments and heartfelt thanks in a fractured world.
Xenia crossed her arms and spoke more candidly, hoping to get her point across to the newcomers that the decision to elect Ash as their leader is based on merit, and it is best they follow his orders and advice.
"If you have doubts about his capabilities, I will tell you upfront now that the reason why we're still alive is because Ash was willing to travel from Saffron to Pallet just for his mother. Many of the walls, buildings and water tanks you see outside were all devised by Ash, with our help of course. So please, respect his authority and our community." For Sabrina and Roxanne, the emphasis on Ash's status and position was a clear message of respect and to prevent any form of insubordination from them. It's also a good idea to elect the person who is friends with everyone in the group and could generally get along with all ages and generations since he is well acquainted with everyone already. Though they may be gym leaders that are used to position and power, they also understand that revered than feared is the way to go when it comes to leadership.
"Does that mean we will have our own task too?" Dawn's question was met with a nod from Xenia, she expects that much from them.
"Yes, you must contribute if you wish to stay with us. We will assess your skills and find a job suitable to you. Are you all trainers?"
"No, May and I are enrolled in coordinator courses, Risa is a sports school student." Xenia was frankly not expecting that, Sabrina and Roxanne are formidable gym leaders and provided they came with their full slotted team, the mismatch of skills and trainers among them was honestly weird. The only connection they all had in common was that they knew Ash enough to to come see him, except for Sabrina, which made her the odd one out.
"I see, then all of you will be under Ash then." The blunt statement from her made Ash blinked. Since when did they agree he should be the one leading them?
"What?" Xenia smirked and turned to him with her hands perched on her hips.
"You must teach them how to properly and effectively command their pokemon to work together. Miss Roxanne, your experience in teaching students in this regard would come in handy." The rock loving scholar placed both hands behind her back, indeed she is back to her tutoring roots again.
"I will do my best, but May, Dawn and Risa already have an exposure in trusting and commanding their pokemon to fight off the infected. Every trainer with a pokemon must fight under a squadron of soldiers during our time in the town hall." Another grim reminder that the so-called safe zone was not as safe as the military claimed, perhaps Surge was right. Still, at least it gave the girls firsthand experience fighting and dealing with the infected.
"Good, then that will make things easier. Lady Sabrina, you would help Roxanne in this." The Saffron gym leader was quiet and calculative, you can argue her presence here makes not much of a difference at all which boggles Ash's mind why she is here.
"Of course." With the gym leader's cooperation secured, Xenia clapped her hands and ended their meeting.
"Well with all of the heavy and serious stuff done, let's have lunch!" The rally banner that is food quickly won the hearts and minds, Delia and Rosa rushed to the kitchen in preparation of making more servings for more mouths to feed. Roxanne peered over the kitchen and quickly volunteered as her culinary skills can be considered Michelin star quality.
"I will help too." With the chefs cooking a storm, Ash joined the girls and sat in the living room. Pikachu squeaked and found himself reunited with Dawn's Piplup and newcomers such as Risa's Eevee and May's Torchic. The pokemon greeted one another and their own conversations about what happened to them. Quick to bring a couple of drinks to break the ice, Ash slides the mugs over to the table and waved towards the girls.
"So how are you guys?" May leaned onto Dawn's shoulders and sighed softly, to think she get to enjoy a hot drink in a comfy bean bag, what a dream.
"Tired and horrified but I'm glad that Dawn and I are together." The blue haired cheerleader nodded and patted May's head. They have been through much together, the horrific screams of infected breaking barricades and scratching against the walls. The wailing and shrieks of Ratatats storming the sandbags, and the smell of burnt flesh and decomposing bodies piling up the streets. It was all so overwhelming and painful just to watch.
"If only Misty is here."
"Your roommate right?" May nodded to Ash's question and snaked her arms around her Torchic who quickly comforted its trainer by nuzzling its warm fur against her.
"Mhmm, she went back to Cerulean, her father is the gym leader and she has orders to return home and serve under the military." Ash raised his eyebrows, this was critical news. Gym leaders are supposed to be autonomous, untouched by bureaucratics or the federal government. Naturally, in a crisis emergency ordinances have been invoked and the government had every right to take over. But to hear gym leaders with established control over their own city succumbing to military orders is a little perplexing, hell now that Sabrina is here, it raises a lot of questions of who is in charge of Saffron too.
"Gym leaders serve the army now?"
"Yes, they established martial law and emergency ordinance that gave them full jurisdiction and authority." The quick insert by Sabrina made Ash realize she was listening to the conversation. Granted, she wasn't as ice cold or monotone as the media exaggerated her, she was actually drinking the cup of hot tea that Ash brewed for her.
"Why are you all here then, I know that you all came here because I'm here but won't it be safer to be with the others?" Risa seized the chance to sit closer to Ash, not that the young man mind you but it was an observation nevertheless.
"Frankly speaking, it's way too overcrowded and noisy. Parts of Saffron are under military control so we're safe there but we just don't like being watched, it feels like we're caged in. The encampment is just so suffocating. Besides, Pallet Town is isolated from the rest of the town too so when the military first announced that they would be redistributing survivors, we took the chance." Ash still finds that hard to believe. Allowing civilians to choose where they want to go instead of ordering them around? That does not seem logical or rational. Something else is amiss and Ash did not rule out that Pallet Town is being used as bait.
"Although we are international students, Sinnoh and Hoenn have not charted any flights for us yet. We're stuck here." This was a bleak situation, unlike the boys whom he dearly hopes are okay, seeing these girls wondering if they ever see their family again hits different. Ash has been isolated from the outside world for so long that he has forgotten what it's like to frantically wander around.
"I'm sorry to hear that, I promise you that you girls will unite with your family. All of this will be over soon." Though they doubt that, the girls nevertheless appreciate Ash's gesture of reassuring them that everything would be okay. An unflattering leader during times of duress provides much succor to the soul.
"Thanks Ash, we're glad you're with us." As usual, Ash deflected sappy sentimental gratitude with sarcasm and lighthearted tones.
"But you won't get much freedom here either, stuck behind the walls and doing nothing." May begged to differ, this place is much nicer than their previous place.
"Trust us Ash, here is way better than there. Look! You even have bean bags and cushions, that's miles better than the stuffy beds." To elaborate on her point, she fell hair down onto the pile of beanbags and rolled around like a little child. At the mention of accommodation, Ash was quick to think of the logistics of having more people joining their community.
"Speaking of beds, you would need to share rooms, we barely have enough ourselves." The absolute tone from Ash drew a quick response from May.
"That's okay, we can stay in the living room, it would feel kinda like a slumber party." The raven haired child shook his head and dismissed her suggestion. Everyone here should have a proper bed, a roof to live under and a warm meal provided.
"Let me look into it first, I'm sure we can work something out." The girls nodded, they could tell Ash had much more confidence from the last time they met him and if his muscles were anything to go by, he definitely had been through the wringer.
"Thank you so much Ash, it's hard to believe that we meet each other like this." The steadfast leader of Pallet simply smiled, glad that everyone is at least safe and sound. Circumstances aren't ideal but they make do with what they have.
"Lunch!" The morale heartening cry made everyone in the living room run to the kitchen. Delia chuckled when the children all lined up together as if they were receiving a Christmas present. Food security would be a bigger issue now but more hands on the field also means more yields. The group sat around the long dinner table, Xenia led Ash to sit at the head table with the original survivors of Pallet sitting close to Ash while the newcomers sat further away from him. The assortment of dishes such as curry, fried rice, sauteed mushrooms and tomato salads drenched with vinegar. The mouthwatering teenagers looked amongst each other, this was way better than army rations!
"Please enjoy." That was all the encouragement they needed before they dove into the meal. Finally, after weeks of rations and canned food, fresh and healthy food from the organic soil was back within their plates again. May let out a moan at the delicious home cooked meal that reminded her much of her mom's cooking.
"This is the best meal I have had in forever!" Ash's lips curled upwards at the sight of everyone having a good time. Hard to believe this long table used to be so empty, now it's filled to the brim with a community. The young man crossed his arms and stared at his teacher, he just remembered something pivotal he wanted to ask her.
"Miss Roxanne, are Aggron and Golem with you?" The Hoenn teacher wiped her mouth with her napkin and nodded to Ash's question/
"Yes the two are, why?" A jovial smile crept to Ash's face, the two would be instrumental in upgrading their defenses. Fortifications and tools would come in handy given their ability to build forts and spiked traps. Aggrons also have the unique ecological understanding of ecology such as planting trees or bringing in topsoil in the event of floods and forest fires, thus coming handy in restoring the forest of Pallet Town.
"We can finally upgrade our walls to steel and stone now. Maybe we can even make tools out of Aggron's metal spikes too! Maybe a spear, halberd? Hmm, maybe steel beams to support housing?" The excited rambling from Ash drew chuckles from Delia, she ruffled his hair and leaned against her palm with a smile on her face.
"There he goes again, always thinking about the next step."
"Ah sorry it's just, having a steel and rock type opens the door to so many possibilities now." Roxanne would agree to it, but that sounds like work for tomorrow. Right now she just want to indulge herself into fine food and warm company.
"You're not wrong, let's look into our defenses in the morning alright? Aggron and Golem fondly remember you." The two hulking goofballs practically cheered with joy when they found out they would be reuniting with Ash and Pikachu again.
"Really, I miss them too." Xenia eyed the two interactions, Ash wasn't wrong when he said Miss Roxanne and him get along, she could practically taste the chemistry already. She observed the rest of the occupants in the table and found it surprising Risa was not eating, just sitting there with her downcast eyes.
"Risa you barely touched the food, is it not to your liking?" The former athlete shook her head, breaking out of her chain of memories and thoughts that she fondly miss.
"O-Oh no no, just- it feels nice to have dinner like this…. reminds me of my family." Arceus, Ash did consider himself truly lucky to reunite with his mother. The fate of everyone's family and friends remains uncertain and who knows when would they ever reunite with each other, if at all. The chieftain of Pallet stood up and walked towards her and placed his hands above her's.
"We're here for you Risa, if you need anything, let us know." Aurea watched in great interest when Risa leaned against Ash's chest and held him. The poor girl was experiencing a lot of trauma and anguish, and she found comfort in their unflattering charismatic leader. From what she understood with the quick conversation from Roxanne, Ash practically saved her life by luring the infected to him and buying time for her to escape. This would be an interesting development going forward in their relationship, especially when so many girls are here.
The afternoon lunch was then concluded with the newcomers washing the dishes. Rosa approached Xenia, Aurea, Delia and Ash as they began discussing the sleeping arrangement of their large group.
"I will sleep in your room Xenia, May and Dawn can take my room." Xenia wrote the whiteboard with a marker to jot down the sleeping arrangements of everyone here. As usual, Ash and Delia would be sharing a room, Rosa and herself would share her's, May and Dawn would take over Rosa's. That leaves Roxanne, Risa and Sabrina.
"Risa and Sabrina can take mine, the lab is basically my bedroom anyway." Ash sighed at Aurea's tendency to sleep in the lab and flickered her forehead with his fingers, earning a cute yelp from the otherwise sophisticated professor.
"Aurea you overwork yourself too much, please rest, if not I'm taking the pokedex away from you permanently." My, my, is this a threat out of concern and love? Aurea had seen this before.
"Okay, okay, so aggressive and assertive."
"I just want what's best for you, your health is important too." The soft and mellow expression from him made Aurea chuckle, this is a conversation they had hundreds of times, and it still makes her heart race whenever he says it. She rewarded him by wrapping her arms around his neck and pining her body weight onto him.
"Alright, alright." Xenia rolled her eyes over the display, what happened to being careful around the others when it comes to their polyamorous relationship huh?
"Ehem, back to the whiteboard. Roxanne can sleep in the spare room, I think we only have extra storage room to spare." Delia was admittedly concerned how much room they are running out of, chances are if refugees or survivors are coming to town, they would have to make a decision to turn them away. It was harsh but they can't just let everyone with a sob story and no skills in.
"It's barely furnished but it would suffice." With the meeting concluded, Ash decided it was time to assess the newcomer's pokemon. Arceus willing, they would have a diverse and versatile team composition that allowed them to take on any threat or situation.
"Then it's settled, I will see what pokemon they have and see if they are fit for sentry duty." The ladies watched Ash meet up with the rest of the girls and ushered them to go outside with him. Aurea smiled at his initiative nature, he was starting to act more proactive and like a leader now given how big their group was giving. The Unova scholar swung an arm around Delia's shoulder, eager to share her pride of Ash with her.
"He really grew so much, my goodness! Delia, be prepared for a fierce battle for your son's affection!" The auburn mother groaned and leaned back into Juniper's shoulders. She knew the moment the girls hugged her son, it was practically over. Ash is no means a casanova or a charming debonair, but he was sweet, compassionate and respectful. In a world of uncertainty and when rule of law has broken down, those traits have practically vanished overnight when anarchy runs around the streets and there's no moral and legal reinforcement. Xenia sighed at friend's antics and perched one hand on her hip, they just resolved their shared polygamy relationship and now fate has decided to add more girls to the town to further complicate their relationship.
"Aurea."
"Hey you saw how the teacher was looking at Ash, ah the spicy teacher and student relationship, a classic tale of taboo and forbidden romance." Delia smiled wryly, she could be considered the queen of forbidden romance then. She let out a pent up sigh and rubbed her temples, her Ash might have his hands full, hopefully they get more male survivors.
"Great, now our time with him is even less."
The troop of pokemon rallied before him, accompanying their regal forms were their trainers. Ash stood with his arms crossed and Pikachu perched on his shoulders, he had never issued commands like this before, this was a whole new playing field given the sheer amount of coordination they would need to protect their territory.
"Hello everyone, from today on I will be your commander of sorts. Now that doesn't mean that you become my pokemon, it just means we work together to help protect everyone here." The cries of agreement from the pokemon and their mistresses made Ash scratch his cheek out of embarrassment, he is acting cocky and big headed by calling himself commander!
"Man, it's weird to call myself that when we have two very experienced gym leaders here." Referring to Sabrina and Roxanne, the two gym leaders brushed his concern off. While logic dictates that they should be leading the defense, having Ash doing this makes more sense when you realize he is familiar with the surrounding threats they are up against and what Pallet Town actually needs in terms of bolstering key weakness points. Roxanne stepped forward and placed a hand on her ample breast.
"Our experience and skill is vast, yes, but in the end you know more about the infected and the surrounding area than we do Ash. We trust your judgment and you're not acting alone, let's learn together." Exactly like how he imagined her to be, pragmatic and diplomatic. The raven haired child grunted and inspected the newcomers.
"Let's see here, Torchic, Piplup, Aggron, Golem, Eevee, Alakazam and Espeon, this is incredible." A mixture of frontline fighters, long range elemental attackers, utility and defensive supporters and psychic types to detect any lurking infected, Pallet Town lucked out.
'A diverse team that allows you to outfight or outsmart opponents.' Already, Ash could envision tall steel concrete walls with Aggron and Golem patrolling the perimeter. Alakazam and Espeon would be useful for moving objects or detecting any life around them. Piplup would be vital when it comes to naval defense given one key vulnerability of Pallet Town was its lack of naval defense. Rogue actors such as pirates and raiders can easily use the waterways to invade or siege Pallet Town if they get a hands on boats or yachts.
Pikachu squeaked after conversing with them, it walked towards Sabrina and tilted its head aside when its nose caught something peculiar. The two stared at one another with the electric mouse squeaking in delight after it caught her scent, so she really is her! The psychic beauty's eyes glowed pink for the moment, before Pikachu and her locked eyes for a few seconds. The affable mouse pokemon soon nodded and saluted, fully respecting the psychic's wishes and allowing her to break the ice when she was ready.
"Sentret, Makuhita, Archeops, Growlithe, meet your new teammates." Ash watched both sides exchanging cries and pawshakes with one another. He glanced at their many watchtowers aligned on the walls and decided that it was time to send the little ones to their first sentry duty.
"Torchic, Piplup, Eevee and Espeon, four of you would begin the nightwatch with Sentret. Naturally you will take turns but please help us keep an eye out for infected." Piplup and Torchic turned to their trainers and hugged them close, hoping that they would be okay without them being at their side. May scooped Torchic up and turned to the nightwatch towers, she never realized the towers were there!
"You even have little lookout towers for them, cute!" Risa nodded with Eevee pawing for her attention in her arms, they actually looked like penthouses in pokemon daycares.
"Hehe some of them even have cushions or blankets for them to rest and snuggle." The girls' heart melted at the fact, seemingly more at ease letting their partners do the noble task of keeping them safe.
"That's adorable Ash." The sole male of Pallet chuckled at their endearing tone, they have to make sure the pokemon are comfortable with their surroundings too. After issuing orders and distributing the tasks, Aggron, Makuhita and Golem were given the monumental task of creating The Wall. An impenetrable fort that is impervious to any form of pitiful assault, Ash's grand vision was to turn Pallet Town into a steelbound fortress. Eevee was given a different task, she is responsible for agriculture and crops rotations. Delia needs all the help with the extra mouths to feed and a grass type is practically necessary now.
The booming thunder from above disrupted their meeting and Ash grumbled at the weather's fondness for becoming a mood killer. In a few more months, the first drop of snow will fall and they have to worry about heating, food and shelter.
'Heating, right, we need more warm clothes.' A trip to the store is in order, there are a few boutique shops they haven't gone through yet, maybe they can sew clothes together to make them padded and thick.
'Armor too, these girls need armor asap, the padded gambeson should work. I also need to make sure they report to Xenia weekly and have routine sessions with Rosa for mental health talks. Then I need-' His train of thought was interrupted when he felt Roxanne pull him towards the inside as rain began to pour, his cheeks flushed lightly when the homeroom teacher held his hand as if he was her boyfriend.
'Get a grip Ash, you're literally dating your own mom, an Officer Jenny and a well renowned professor.' The strings of words made Ash wonder if he is incredibly blessed or cursed with the situation he found himself in. Once safe and warm inside the laboratory, Ash breathed out from the overwhelming thoughts that made him blanked out.
"Sorry, I was just thinking" His teacher ruffled his hair and leaned forward with her lips dangerously close to his ear.
"You can depend on me Ash, don't try to shoulder everything by yourself." He meekly nodded to her, he was getting ahead of himself wasn't he? He could think of the future later, with Kyogre's blessing showering Pallet Town, it was time to relax a little and make sure everyone here is more comfortable.
"Please make yourself at home, if you're looking for fun things to do well there isn't much, no internet and all." Arguably, the internet withdrawal was starting to hit them all, no more memes, endlessly scrolling through TikTok or short form content. Now it was just human nature and company. All of the community members in Pallet sat in the living room, the chatty atmosphere slowly brewed up and it made the young man smile like a total goofball. It's really heartwarming to see them like this, it reminds him of better times when he hangout with friends in the cafeteria.
But as daylight grew dim and the short hand of the clock inched closer to 8 PM, Ash's hand reached for his pocket and twirled the card like paper given by Biggs. He seized the chance of the community preoccupied with one another and slipped outside of the warm laboratory, hoping that body would notice.
"Ash?" He halted his footsteps when Risa walked behind him. He simply turned and flashed a reassuring smile, he didn't expect her to follow him or be that observant.
"I'm going out to stakeout with the pokemon, try not to miss me too much yeah?" The red cheeks on her face made Ash chuckle, it's kinda fun to talk like this to a girl similar to his age, it was hard to get this kind of response from the older women who are well used to flattery and witty remarks.
"Okay, be careful Ash." With the blonde teen walking back to the living room, Ash found his unfaltering and steadfast companion Pikachu jumping onto his shoulders after realizing his trainer was missing in the living room. The electric mouse climbed on top of his trainer's shoulders and gave it a squeak of content when Ash patted his head.
'Now let's see what the hell this is about.' Ash stood before the sliding window door that allowed the outside lamp to shine through. Whatever Biggs intention is, it can't be good with the thinly veiled messages and secrecy. He slowly pulled the card out in the backdrop of the flashing lightning.
Pokedex video link Code: 7E6X4V8 H498PL2
Bill is expecting you. Find some place discreet.
Ash narrowed his eyes, it seems Bill is incahoots with the military after all. Makes sense, a technocrat of great importance would be prioritized during a crisis. But find some place discreet… ah ha!
"Let's go buddy." Braving through the rain, Ash reached the small outpost where all of the pokemon sentries reside. He climbed up the wooden ladder to enter the main quarters of the place and oh dear- it seems Ash had a bad time as they were busy playing what seems to be card games in the form of pebbles and marbles. The pokemon slowly turned to their unflattering commander and awkwardly waved to him, much to Ash's amusement.
"Don't mind me, pretend that I'm not here." The little wink and finger on his lips gesture made the pokemon nod, they would pretend they didn't see a thing. Ash squeezed through and sat in the middle, enjoying the warmth and comfort of the pokemon who decided to cuddle with him in the cold rainy temperature, what cute little fellas.
'Let me type this code down.' Thumbs tapped against his pokedex and without much hesitation, he pressed the send button. His heart beated in anticipation as questions began to pile his mind, how did Biggs know he would make it to Pallet Town, did he actually planned this all this time? Was meeting Bill at that fuel station coincidence or premeditated? So many unanswered questions and-
"Ash, you hear me?" Ash smiled, any familiar voice heard is always something worth celebrating for.
"Loud and clear Bill."
"Great! Let me turn on the camera." With that, Bill's face came through the video and he still looked the same. The background however confirmed Ash's suspicion that he is in a laboratory of sorts with the white walls, high tech monitors and bright lights.
"Haha, it works, wait for a moment yeah? Oak would be joining us." The absolute news elated Ash greatly, he enthusiastically shifted around and cheered with Pikachu. The old fossil! They have not heard from him for so long now, Arceus Ash hopes he is also and none worse for wear.
"It's good to see you by the way. Woah, you looked bigger than the last time I saw you, been working out?" Ash chuckled at the in awe tone, he did think he got bigger and stronger since the pandemic. His mother has been quite vocal of how big he has gotten, uh in more ways than one.
"Well when your daily survival depends on it, yeah." The two men chuckled and nodded, nothing like lighthearted humor to mask the depressing situation they are in right now.
"Good, you're in some place discreet?" Ash flipped the phone and showed Bill the pokemon accompanying him. Piplup and Espeon waved to the camera while Torchic, Sentret and Eevee all posed for the occasion.
"Just the pokemon's company." Bill merely smiled at how happy Ash sounded, the apocalypse did little to dampen his spirits.
"Cool, I know you have a lot of questions but wait for a moment and-"
"Bill! Ash!" The sudden pop up of a third screen made Ash's eyes light up, it really is Professor Oak. Although a little more tired and more crinkles than he last remembered, he still looks fit and healthy.
"Professor, it's good to see you!" The sentiment goes both ways with the old fossils nearly choking to tears at the sight of his foster grandson. Arceus, what he won't give to bring Daisy and Gary back to Pallet again.
"Likewise, how are you my boy? Is everyone in Pallet Town alright?" Ash hesitated for a moment, not sure how he should approach the situation given everyone beside their community is- out of the picture.
"Only mom and an officer Jenny named Xenia made it when I first arrived." The rain pouring outside of the outpost seemed to grow louder with the silence, Oak took a moment before replying with false optimism in his voice.
"I see… well I'm sure most of them have left town or crossed the border before the infection." Bill cleared his throat to clear the bleak atmosphere, now was not the time to dwell on what they couldn't change.
"We can save catching up for later. Ash, do you know why we decided to call you?"
"Before that, how did you know I would make it to Pallet Town in one piece?" A good question as any and one which plagued Ash's mind since the chopper landed. Biggs sat upright and reached for the steamy coffee cup that powered his through many sleepless nights.
"I'm sure you met Biggs, though a commando under the army, his team of soldiers secretly works for Oak and I. As for how we knew, well you can thank your pokedex for it." Ash blinked, fully digesting the information before speaking in shock.
"You tracked me?" Bill sighed and nodded. The truth is every pokedex is built to be trackable by authorities or companies who bought the data rights too. There's a reason why advertisements seemed to be so highly effective in persuading people to buy, companies already know your interest and impulses, they just have triggered it.
"It's a built-in feature, every device hooked into the internet has all your information and conversations recorded. The point of a Pokedex is to monitor, record and track the trainer's data and their pokemon's detail. Which region did they go to? What transaction have they done? Their personal data, everything. Though I hate the idea, you must admit that the algorithm and its system is brilliant." It confirmed Gary's statements then, the pokedex wasn't meant to give trainers an edge in identifying pokemon or make their trainer lives easier. It was just for data collection.
"That's scary… so is that why you decided to turn my phone into a pokedex?" The pioneer winced at how bad this situation sounds, he sheepishly scratched his head and ignored his wife in the background laughing at his red-handedness.
"Uh more or less, the main reason was to give you access to the internet archives so you can find videos or tutorials to help you out to survive. When I told Oak that I stumbled upon you he immediately asked for me to track and monitor your progress." Ash narrowed his eyes and spoke more aggressively.
"Then tell me this, are you planning to use Pallet Town as bait?" The silence from the humans concerned the pokemon around Ash. They glanced at him and found it unnerving how much unbridled anger was laced behind his calm demeanor. The sudden statement even caught the two professors off guard as they weren't sure where this was coming from.
"What?" Ash would not be easily fooled, the two are working with the military and as far as Ash knows, they cannot be trusted.
"Don't play dumb with me, no way in hell that the military would waste precious aircraft fuel just to ferry five survivors to a small town, two of them being experienced gym leaders with powerful pokemon. I know Viridian City is almost collapsing because of infection, you guys are planning to retake the city from Team Rocket aren't you?" Oak let the young man release his pent out aggression first, before slowly and calmly explaining the situation to Ash. It was clear Ash was aware of the military's fondness of the Redeker plan.
"Ash, we are not working with the military, at least not voluntarily. As for using Pallet Town as bait, I would never do that. You are like a grandson to me and Delia is a dear friend, you think I would send hordes of bloodthirsty cretins to the town that I built up with my very hands?" Oak's matter of fact tone made Ash realize the logic in his words. Oak was forced to work with Cinnabar authorities and to some extent the military, so why would he even consider harming Pallet Town given he built the place up with his hard work?
"No but… I'm sorry." Oak softened into a smile, as long Ash is amenable to words and reason, then this is no issue at all. The crestfallen expression from the young man's face told him enough that he is under a lot of stress and concern.
"It's alright, it actually gladdens me that you are aware of what's going on. But fortunately for you, Pallet Town has been chosen." Ash raised his head and eyebrows, what did he mean by that?
"Chosen?" Oak glanced at Bill, to which the younger man nodded. Now the true purpose of their meeting with Ash would come to fruition. This is critical information Ash needs to know.
"Sparsely populated towns and villages make for excellent bases and hideouts for survivors. It is in the government's best interest to ensure these strategic locations do not get destroyed or trampled by the horde. Pallet Town is perfect for rebuilding civilization due to the fertile soil and geographic location, thus it's been dubbed as a Safe Zone." The stalwart leader of Pallet crossed his arms, fully listening to the conversation in earnest.
"Safe Zone? What is that?"
"It means that the infected are non-existent or too little to be a threat. Kanto has lost 37% of their population since the infection began and that data is severely underreported thanks to inaccessible to the internet. We might have lost 50% or 60% of our countrymen, and we won't know. Therefore, it is in the country's best interest to have healthy and virile young men like you safe from harm's way for the rebuilding of Kanto society." Did Ash hear that right? They lost that many people? His eyes dilated in fear and at the horrific implication of their situation. How could this happen!? He refuses to believe so many Kantonians have died, no way!
"We lost that many people?" Bill sighed and nodded, he wasn't necessarily surprised by the number but even he had a hard time accepting that fact.
"Majority of the world's population are always concentrated in big cities, wipe out all of the urban residents and you lose 90% of the country." Pikachu placed a concerned paw on Ash's shoulders, his trainer looked like he was about to lose it at any given moment. Then suddenly, Ash shot up and remembered what Bill said earlier.
"W-Wait, then the reason why all the survivors who came are all girls is-" Bill chuckled at his beet read expression, it seems he finally figured out why the military is willing to send two highly skilled gym leaders to Pallet Town.
"Correct, they were selected for copulation. Of course, it helps that they naturally want to come to you and see you since you are already well acquainted, honestly makes things easier for all involved given your rugged good looks and dashing rescue voyage in saving maidens. Originally, the plan was to have even number of male and female survivors buuut that plan was tossed out the window when the army realized they need men for conscription." Oak nodded and added on.
"Pallet Town is not the only settlement chosen, there are at least 3200 groups of survivors camps, numbers vary between 3 - 50 but most of them are in safe and secured positions. The infected population mostly congregate in large metropolitan cities, infected pokemon do lurk in the wilds but they would not attack settlements unless provoked." Chosen by the military, that somehow doesn't make Ash feel at ease. What dastardly plans do they have in store for them in the future?
"So Pallet Town is safe?" Bill shrugged and poured more coffee into his mug.
"As safe as one can be in a zombie apocalypse, you're a lucky man too. Once the whole fiasco is done, I'm sure there will be a new law to legalized polygamy and multiple partners to encourage child births, not that we need the law's permission in the first place ain't it Ash?" Ash averted his gaze and stammered out his response. He does not want to think about the absolute headache of becoming a father especially at his young age.
"I-I haven't done anything with them." Oak grinned and crossed his arms, Gary would die to be Ash's position right now.
"Well that's the government's long term plan, you don't have to follow it. Frankly speaking, you can establish your own domain and no one would bat an eye." Ash never thought of it like that but, he has no grand ambitions of becoming a king, he just wants his loved ones to be safe. He closed his eyes for a moment, he could think of his future harem later, right now they have more pressing issues to discuss.
"Professor, can you tell me anything about the virus?" Oak leaned behind his chair and nodded as he put on his glasses.
"I was wondering when this question would be asked. I assume Aurea told you the suspected origins of the virus?"
"Yes Mt Moon, she did a powerpoint of it." Oak grunted and rapidly danced his fingers on the keyboard, bringing out different confidential documents to his screen.
"Good, though we dearly miss her presence in Cinnabar, I shall be forward with the information we currently know. We have reason to believe that this virus comes from a lab leak." The curt statement drew a strong reaction from Ash.
"Lab leak? Like Resident Evil?!" Bill nodded and finger gun Ash, right on the mark.
"Yes, exactly like that. However, instead of Rattatas, it's actually Zubats. Scrapped archives from deleted files showed that any mention of a virology laboratory in Mt Moon has been redacted from the database. Batlike pokemon are known culprits for being virus vectors, this time was no different." What sorts of horrific experiments they were conducting there, no better yet. Who is conducting these experiments? Secret military organization? Team Rocket?
"Ash, did you read the letters at the office?" The young Ketchum nodded, looks like they weren't kidding when they want to discuss important issues tonight.
"Yes, how did you know I would find them?"
"Intuition, and you were the only one outside of Gary who knows the secret compartment. We used to snuck in candy bars and sweets, remember?" Ash fondly remembered those time, Gary and him always got into trouble for eating in the lab. But those letters, how do they relate to the outbreak?
"How is it linked to this outbreak, is it all connected?" Oak passed the buck to his protege.
"Bill, why don't you explain to Ash." Say no more, long exposition that required clarification was his forte. Bill poured even more coffee into his cup because he would need that to get through this conversation.
"Alright Ash, let me ask you a simple question. Who is the leader of Kanto?" He raised his eyebrows, what kind of question is that?
"Leader? Isn't it Lance?"
"Right, Lance is the leader of the Elite 4 and the Champion of Kanto, however that doesn't necessarily mean he is the prime minister or president of the region. Kanto, like many other regions, is meritocratic, where the most able and talented people should helm the role of leadership. This is decided through pokemon battles, beat the Champion of Kanto and voila, you're the new champion. But Lance does not involve himself in boring affairs like managing the economy, social stability, administrative work or solving bread and butter issues. He is by all means, a puppet, a face just for show." Ash placed a hand beneath his chin, now that he thinks about it, he never heard Lance utter any policy or economic plan before. All the Dragon type master does is give speeches and talk about how great Kanto is.
"But he gives speeches during national parades, every time the cameras show up it's him front and center. He is even called the Champion of Kanto, the leader!" Bill nodded and clapped his hands, this was all part of Indigo's ploy.
"And you would be forgiven for thinking that Ash, but the real power behind Lance are the people in the Indigo League, a council of sorts that decides Kanto's affairs. Lance's role in managing the country's affair is mostly ceremonial and even theatrical." This seemed very political in nature, and Ash wasn't necessarily politically aware or savvy but he could start to see where this conversation was going.
"Why are you telling me this Bill?" Straightforward and serious as ever, Bill respects Ash for getting down to business. The enigmatic inventor clasped both hands and sighed, where does he begin?
"Strap in Ash, this is going to get complicated. Essentially, the government is afraid of a trainer uprising because people are getting much more powerful pokemon than ever before, which in the long run may undermine or challenge the League's authority. That is why we raised the age of entry for trainers, to better regulate the industry and create stringent tests to judge a student's worth before allowing them to become full fledged trainers. From psychology, behavioral patterns and using advanced algorithms, all of Kanto's future trainers are vetted thoroughly to prevent any rogue trainers who think they can rule the region by force."
"That is scary, I never knew so much went into this."
"Oh the Lopunny hole goes deeper. Hence, why the government is mulling to restrict what type of pokemon a trainer can own and what type of test they need to take before they can capture higher tier pokemon like Pseudo legendaries or obtain starters. Of course that itself has all sorts of societal implications and backlash. The 2013 Garchomp rampage incident in Kalos is still something everyone remembers to this day and that incident would be cited as an excuse to table the new rule." The 2013 Garchomp Rampage in Lumiose City subsequently created a divide between pokemon right groups and government institutions. Certainly pokemon going out of control is a common occurrence but this one the first high profile case captured on camera with billions watching the chaos that happened live on TV. The idea of pokemon and humans forever living peacefully was shattered at that very moment, with many commentators, politicians and internet personalities coming to the same conclusion.
If one Garchomp can wreck so much havoc, what's stopping other pokemon from doing the same?
"Bill, if anything is so controlled and regulated, what's the problem?" Bill gave a wry smile. Indeed, what is the problem if all trainers listen to Indigo's directions to the letter? Well, plenty to speak of.
"Though we have raised the age for trainers and set strict criterias, the barrier of entry for teenagers to become trainers is basically nonexistent, pay the fee, be a good student and attend the courses. This becomes a problem when trainers inevitably end their journey and return to society with no career ambitions in mind, and you know what they do?"
"Uh enter tournaments?" Bill flipped his palm up and down, that's an ambition many aspire but few achieve.
"The skilled and determined ones yes, but the rest who flunk out are unemployed with no hard skills. With no tertiary education or experience in the workforce, trainers groups are the biggest unemployed cohorts in the world. We have a lot of upskilling and retraining classes meant for returning trainers, but as the world rapidly evolves and bachelor degrees aren't enough anymore, you will see a rising issue. Companies want fresh grads to have 1 - 2 years of working experience despite being an entry level jobs, people are expected to do two or three people's worth of work for the salary of one, economic downturns means austerity measures and downsizing, a trend of deglobalization between regions means supply and demands are being disrupted with protectionism and self-reliance being the core stakes, regions are increasingly clashing with one another over vested interest and political differences. The divide between rich and poor has widened and everything has been commodified in the name of profits. When you have so many issues happening at once, it's only a matter of time before it all explodes." Oak listened in cold silence, sighing at how the noble intention of letting kids live out their dreams and embark on exciting adventures became such a headache for policymakers. Ah who is he kidding, the government's intention was never about making children happy and letting them explore themselves, it's about capitalizing their ambitions and dreams for money.
"Traditionally, social unrest all stem from unhappy and unemployed populace and when you have a group of people with powerful pokemon on their side and are unhappy with rising prices and their place in the world, they quickly turn to crime to make ends meet or vent out frustrations. Protest, mass gathering and eventually someone would lead a movement. And Indigo does not like that, in fact no authority in power does." Unemployment is an omnipotent issue across the world, with 15 -24 year old age cohorts having the highest unemployment in the world. This age group is vital due to regions given how much consumption power they wield in areas such as education, housing and cars. But as corporations began to raise the barrier of entry for job requirements and economic headwinds rear their ugly head, it became a downward spiral of national brain drain and foreign capital leaving the region. Combined with mismatch of talents, industry and academia blaming each other for their own incompetence, overhype of AI usage in workplaces that lead to skill obsolescence then you will see a glowing trend.
"So that's what the letter meant! Okay, but this is the system they created for us! We did what we were told and just followed our dreams." Understandably, Ash was pissed but Bill did understand the steps Indigo took. Pokemon are fundamentally much stronger than humans and there was an urgent need for humans to equip themselves with enough strength and power to fight or even subjugate these powerful creatures. Thus an idea was born and with it came with benefits and problems.
"Exactly, they created this mess and now they have to solve it, and it's not an easy one to solve too. Our world depends on humans and pokemon peacefully co-existing with one another, trainer groups facilitate and maintain this relationship. Frankly speaking, without new trainers, pokemon and humans would no longer be friends with one another and conflict would soon rise when no mediator is involved. I know it sounds absurd, but it is completely possible for us to live in a world where pokemon and humans do not interact at all. When that happens, conflict and misunderstandings would lead to strife. Thus, the Champion for every region rule was created to ensure they would always be trainers idolizing and romanticizing a position of power and prestige to facilitate the steady pipeline of trainers, not to mention its sheer economic benefits of hosting tournaments, advertisements and educational courses. However, too many trainers with broken dreams and boiling frustrations would undeniably be dangerous to society and to a major extent, Indigo's authority." Ash refused to believe that the champion role was engineered for the sake of social stability and used as a conduit to get more trainers in for profits. I mean isn't becoming a trainer about the adventures and the cool exhilarating battles? A Pokemon Master is all about- bridging the gaps between humans and pokemon, by becoming the most powerful person in the world with powerful pokemon by their side.
Arceus, the intention has always been there wasn't it?
"In addition, Leagues are used to keep tabs on the most gifted and powerful trainers around the world and put them on a watchlist. That is why many of those who passed even basic League qualifiers were given positions or long term benefits to ensure they won't abuse their power and status. Pride and power comes hand in hand after all." Ash almost had a mental breakdown, in fact that would make the second time he almost had a mental breakdown today. Everything he studied and believed in, was just all a lie? It was never about achieving their dreams or befriending pokemon but merely keeping potentially dangerous people in check?!
"I never viewed it that way. So how does this relate to the virus outbreak?" Sensing the edge in Ash's voice, Bill finally could get to the juicy part of the story.
"Now we are getting there! In order to combat the overwhelming ratio of civilian trainer groups to soldiers, there were whispers and talks of genetic enhancements being done on the pokerus virus, which would give military pokemon and soldiers a keen edge over the rest of trainer groups. Pokerus virus had always been deemed as a mutualistic virus with no negative side effects, it enhances the growth of pokemon and makes them so much stronger. It didn't take long before a scientist was able to discover a way to increase a pokemon's abilities and bring them to heights, not through bonds of friendship but through hatred and anger." The screen of his pokedex soon showed a man in labcoat with weird glass accessory that formed a spiral above his blonde hair. Judging by his appearance alone, Ash could instantly tell he is the cold and calculative type. A class act in mad scientist villains.
"This is?"
"Colress, former scientist of Team Plasma. He was arrested by Investigator Looker and Champion Alder after the entirety of Team Plasma was brought down during a raid. One of his horrifying inventions is a mind control device, acting similar to a Pokemon Ranger's Capture Stylers to temporarily gain control of pokemon and harness their powers, except this one was capable of controlling trainer owned pokemon." The pokemon surrounding Ash froze at the news, what horrible man must he be to do that? Pikachu leaned to his trainer and growled aggressively at this Colress, is he responsible for this hellscape they found themselves in!?
"Is it possible, controlling trainer owned pokemon?" Bill nodded to Ash's question, he was shocked by this invention as well since he thought pokeballs rendered a pokemon immune to any form of out of battle mind control or hypnosis.
"It is, but it requires a small device to attach to the forehead and electromagnetic waves to synchronize it. The ingenious scientist's goal was to bring out the true potential of pokemon, making them insane and aggressive as all hell. A well informed journalist from Kalos had told me that Colress was not in the maximum security he is supposed to be imprisoned in." This well informed journalist from Kalos seemed to be quite capable, Ash remembered Aurea mentioned her too during her presentation.
"You mean he escaped from prison?" Oak scoffed at the so-called escape. Someone pulled some strings and allowed him to leave with no resistance, though Samuel had some theories, he knew it must be someone from Indigo.
"Possibly, but details are murky at best. We have reason to believe that Colress helped create this variant of Pokerus, his belief was always in bringing out a pokemon's aggression, and what better way to make Pokemon go feral and berserk by making a rage inducing virus that shuts down all logic and rationality?" Ash was seething, what kind of mad man can be so obsessed with bringing out a pokemon's aggression to the point of insanity and causing a zombie apocalypse? What wretched fool, imbecile, a fucking bastard of a lowlife is willing to do this just hurt others!? Ash calmed himself down and tightened his brown jacket, he got to stay objective here and abstract as much information as possible.
"How does it affect humans then? Isn't this virus meant for pokemon?" A good question from Ash, but unfortunately viruses are known to jump from host to host with minor mutation happening with every transmission.
"Cross species and genetic engineering, humans and pokemon are genetically closer than you think Ash. Humans and pokemon were once equals, where they shared dinner tables and became our loving partners. In fact, according to ancient Sinnoh scriptures, it was believed that ancient pokemon assume human forms too." Ash slowly blinked and stared at the pokemon who awkwardly stared back at him, okay they were not expecting to learn about that today.
"I thought those were just conspiracy theories." Bill shrugged and turned to his wife in hopes for more coffee, only to have her levitate his mug and reach for the wonder coffee machine. The inventor turned back to Ash and spoke candidly.
"Fiction always comes from a semblance of truth Ash. In reality, the government laid down these theories to prevent the justification of pokephilia among the populace. Fundamentally, pokemon and humans are a master and servant relationship, an established imbalanced power dynamic that would easily lead to abuse… annnnd Kanto like many other developed regions is facing a population decline, legalizing pokemon and human relations in the name of consent and love would just destroy any hope of restoring healthy demographics. Arceus knows how many people love their pokemon a bit too much." The amount of Gardevoir and Lopunny videos on certain websites alone proved Bill's point, n-not that Ash would know. He just saw some memes about them, that's all.
"Okay I didn't need to know that, let's get back to the virus." The discomfort in Ash's voice made Bill cackle like a gremlin, boy does he like making people uncomfortable with facts and logic.
"Right! Of course, it's just fascinating stuff, right Oak?" The old man was too seasoned and world weary to be shocked by any of the revelation, in fact he already knew about ancient Sinnoh scriptures long ago.
"Yes, to think our fate and bond with pokemon were so intertwined with one another, but regarding the virus, we are talking about a Pokerus infected pokemon and humans that brings out their aggression and potential, terrifying." Ash assumed a thinking pose, if this Colress intends on mastery over rabid pokemon, then it is possible he is responsible for coordinating the infected attacks against Saffron.
"Do you think Colress is the one controlling the infected pokemon that attacked Saffron?" The nods from the two men validated Ash's suspicions.
"Oak and I were thinking the same thing. I'm sure you have noticed that infected pokemon seem to coordinate when targeting cities and fortifications right?"
"Yes."
"Then we have reason to believe that Colress is manualling controlling the infected pokemon when sieging important settlements or strategic locations. You survived Saffron right? You noticed there was a fair amount of tactics used, taking down power plants, disabling communication pipelines and using sewers to their advantage, all of it must be coordinated together without a hitch to pull it off." So the culprit behind all of this was clear, a former Team Plasma scientist obsessed with bringing out a pokemon's true potential through unbridled anger and aggression. What a joke, what a sick joke.
"So he is behind all of this?" The exasperated tone was warranted given the chain of events, but Bill suspects other actors are at play too and they don't have the full picture.
"That we don't know, but what's clear is that the echelons of Indigo had fully taken advantage of this moment to their benefit. Whether the deep state had the intention to unleash a bioweapon is a debate on itself, but I doubt their intention was to kill the very populace they sought to control. As for Colress, there is much information we do not know about him, his motivations and intentions are all unknown, other than his obsession with bringing out a pokemon's true potential." Ash rubbed his temples and felt like a migraine would creep onto him at any given moment.
"This is super confusing and heavy…"
"As it is for us Ash, we only have bits and pieces to go on. I've been placed under house arrest so we might not be able to chat that often, but keep your eyes peeled and don't worry about who's responsible, let us handle that." Oak nodded in agreement with Bill, Ash should just focus on making sure Pallet Town is safe and sound.
"In the meantime, focus on making sure everyone is safe and sound. We mentioned Pallet Town is a Safe Zone, but that doesn't mean you can afford to be tardy and lax. Just don't worry about any attempts of using Pallet Town as a lure for infected, Indigo's decisions and words are resolute. Their sight is on retaking Saffron and once successful, order would be restored." It was blind optimism, but Ash dreams of returning to Saffron not with guns or blades on his arms, but with books and pens again. Bill however was more realistic with Oak's take.
"Hopefully, maybe Colress drops in another thousand infected when we are celebrating, who knows?"
"I hate that you might be right, Bill." Dark humor aside, Ash was more concerned about the looming spillover that is Viridian City. He was well aware that a large group of infected had gathered outside the walls of the Rockets and if the city falls, the horde would naturally spread out to find the nearest prey.
"But Viridian is surrounded by infected pokemon, if it falls Pallet Town would be in danger!" Bill leaned his head against his palm, giving a calm smile despite the gravity of Ash's situation.
"Ash, who do you think led the hordes of infected to Viridian in the first place?" The young leader paused, he stared at Oak who just nodded to Bill's words. The only people capable of doing that is-
"Wait, you mean the army lead the infected to Viridian?" All this time, Ash thought the infected outside of Viridian were refugees and survivors who didn't make it but looking back, he did realize many of them came from north of Viridian where Pewter City is located.
"How else are you going to take back a city from a group of highly organized mafia? Infected people don't use guns or shoot down helicopters with anti air missiles, they are mindless and easy cannon fodder. Now, Indigo has an excuse to use full force to retake the city and establish a foothold there, placing their own people to control the city. As I said Ash, Champions, Elite 4 and Gym Leaders have too much power, Indigo is prepared to take it back, one city at a time." But why? In Ash's view, why would Colress go along with the plan unless they are working together? Surely the brilliant mastermind behind the virus would be aware of large infected movements rights?
"But wait, won't Colress or the mastermind of the virus turn the infected against the army? Why would they go along with the military plan of retaking Viridian?" Samuel sighed and leaned against his chair with his arms slumped to the side. This was the exact question that kept Bill and him up all night. What do they gain from working together?
"That my dear Ash, is what we want to know too. Whether they are in cahoots from the beginning, aligned by common interest or a secret deal has been made, we would never know. In truth, we can only speculate, and speculation would only get you so far." Ash ran a hand through his hair, how could the military do this? There are innocent people in Viridian who are under Rocket rule!
"So messed up, they are innocent people there, so many people who never ask for any of this! Now, they are being hunted by the people who are supposed to protect them!?" Bill sighed, he dearly wished he could tell an empathetic Ash that the military doesn't give a damn about one ship, they care about the whole fleet. Sending in hordes infected as cannon fodders to soak up all the gunfire, resources and attention is just one of the many tactics the Kanto Army has in their sleeves. Once the Rockets are exhausted of morale and men, they would charge right in retaking the city by force. The oppressed populace would cheer at the army's timely intervention and support their rule, winning both the city and its people. Viridian would fall under Indigo's jurisdiction and the fortified city would provide a buffer zone to the elites bunkering down at Indigo Plateau in case of a large-scale infected attack. All of this was planned meticulously, and the worst part is that it doesn't take a military genius or strategist to foresee this.
Seeing Ash's agitated state and the information overload that left him confused and overwhelmed, Oak decided it was best to end the conversation here. They have chatted long enough that they convey all the information they wanted to Ash.
"Ash, I understand this is difficult for you, we will end the call here for you to digest everything. Just know that you only need to do your part, keep the people around you safe. Try not to think about what may or may not happen to others, focus on protecting the people you love. You once told me that 'It doesn't matter if I become a Pokemon Master if I can't be by my mom's side when she needs me' does that belief still stand?" The young man mellowed into a softer look, fondly remembering that bold claim he made to the professor when he was 10 years old.
"Yes." Oak nodded and smiled at the young man.
"Then uphold that promise and make sure nothing, nothing changes that. I know we live in a harsh and uncertain world right now, but having someone or something to look forward to is a powerful motivator. People depend on you now and whether you have the ability to lead them is not the question, it is whether you are willing to. I know you are only 15 and it's unfair to ask a minor to shoulder the burden of leadership, but you survived Saffron and made it to Pallet Town with nothing but your wits and bonds with your pokemon. By nature or by nurture, leadership comes in many forms, you have earned yours with your devotion to your loved ones." Pride swell within Ash's heart, he clenched his fists to suppress his emotions and acknowledged that many people are dependent on him now. No use crying about how he is not suitable for the role or how unfair it is to shoulder the burden of leading his people to a better future. Come hell or high water, Pallet Town would thrive under Ash rule, there was no debate about it.
"Thank you professor, I will try to live up to your expectations." Oak chuckled at how determined Ash is, now that's the lad he knew.
"You already have Ash, I'm very proud of you. I dearly wish to see Delia and Aurea but I know that circumstances are complicated and it's best we keep this meeting a secret from the rest."
"Will do professor." Oak waved his hand up, catching Ash's attention.
"Before you leave Ash, I would like to inform you that a certain someone would visit Pallet Town. She should be arriving by tomorrow morning." That's a little ominous, is this person like Aurea? Is she going to magically appear from the docks?
"She? Who's she?"
"A friendly face, don't worry you will be happy to see her. I have also shared a document with you about the laboratory functions that you might not be aware of, please read the notes in detail as it would directly help with your chances of survival and living. Bill and I won't be able to directly contact you in the future given the State's Firewall would be implemented once power and communication is restored, so this might be our last time seeing each other on call." It seems Biggs was right, the military are close to retaking Saffron. This would be a huge victory for Kanto if they reestablish control in the capital city.
"Oh yeah state-run information control and censorship, just like the good ol' days. Don't worry about the virus Ash, Oak and I will get to the bottom of this. Kanto survived wars, famines and calamities, a virus isn't going to be the end of us." There was much comfort in Bill's words. Kanto had survived many calamities and catastrophes, this damned virus would not end the Ketchum bloodline nor would it stop them from rebuilding their glorious region once again. As the conversation between the trio came to an end, Ash found himself staring at the black blank screen of his pokedex when the two ended the call. He took a moment to process… well everything. He leaned his head against the wall and let out a long sigh, relishing the cool cold air of the rainy night as he contemplated life and everything he was told.
"At this point I don't know what to believe…"
"Pika!" The voice of his starter and the other pokemon staring at him brought a smile to Ash, he eagerly welcomed their hugs as they clearly were trying to cheer him up.
"Thank you everyone, I'm sorry that you guys have to do this." Sentret waved him off and jumped onto his lap, snuggling against his stomach with a sigh. Seizing this rare opportunity, Ash decided to stay with the pokemon longer and collect his thoughts. The rain slowly subsided as time flew by and Ash watched as the water dropped and flowed from the leaves and branches of the nearby trees.
His reflective moment regarding life and existence came to an end when he saw a figure walking towards the outpost. He took the nearby lantern hung on the walls and descended down the watchtower, he raised the lantern up until the light illuminated the person.
"Sabrina?" The psychic gym leader merely nodded and eyed her Espeon walking towards her with Ash's Pikachu trailing behind. The two pokemon sighed when they got their paws dirty from the mud and downpour.
"Hello Ash, I was enroute to see the stars. Do you want to join me?" Ash was surprised that Sabrina was offering to go stargazing with her, this was kinda unexpected but this seemed fairly innocent and to be honest, he had many questions for her.
"Sure." The pair walked outside the compounds and entered the residential streets. Despite the darkness of the night, Ash did find it beautiful that the blanket of stars that appeared after a heavy rain made the skies more clearer, thus allowing more light to illuminate the lands below. As they walked in silence, Ash noticed that they finally stood before his old house.
Wordlessly, Sabrina entered the ruined house fearlessly. Ash was still a little wary of a potential infected but was reassured when Makuhita's pokeball didn't show any sign of aggression or shaking. Curiously, Sabrina seemed to know her way around his house, climbing the stairs and using his own bedroom window to climb above the roof. This was well, extremely trippy to Ash.
"Umm, how do you know your way around my house?" She paid him no mind and sat on the rooftops of his house, gazing upon the universe above and its glittering stars. Her fuchsia coloured eyes glistened with emotion and awe, watching the various twinkles and different shades of purple and white brushing together to create such an enchanting beautiful hue.
"The stars are amazing aren't they? I missed doing this." He sat down next to her as the occasional guest of chilly wind pierce through his jacket. Ash took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, this really brings him back to fonder and simpler times. His mother would always answer any question he had about the different constellations and stars in the sky, it was just so magical of staying in her arms and excitedly pointing at every star that caught his interest. He closed his eyes briefly before turning to Sabrina. Now up close, he realizes how much of a beauty Sabrina is and how graceful and serene she looked with her big pink eyes that showed her curiosity and even child-like innocence.
"Sabrina, can I ask a question?" The psychic gym leader turned to him and assumed a stoic expression as always.
"What is it?" He patted Pikachu's back and spoke more softly as the sound of crickets of the night became apparent.
"Why did you come to Pallet Town? I know the others at least on a first name basis but we never met before." His warm hazel brown eyes pierce through her soul, just like it always did. The young lady clenched her fists and found it comforting that Ash was still the same Ash. That he was unharmed by the horrors that plagued their innocence and region. Barely a word of warning, Ash found the cold and untouchable psychic beauty flew right into his arms, hugging him tightly as the muffled sobs came flowing down. His eyes widened at the sudden shift of moods but on instinct, he wrapped his arms around her and stroked her back.
"I-I thought I would never see you again." The cracked voice and emotionally charged tone was a far cry from her usual portrayal, yet it was the heartfelt sincerity and warmth that invoked a familiar feeling that he used to share with someone else. She slowly parted from him and wiped her tears, her flushed cheeks and fuchsia eyes encaptivating him so much that he felt his heart thumping against his chest wildly.
"Sabrina, I- do we know each other?" She pouted and sighed before pulling a marooned framed glass from her breast pocket to put it on. She let out a giggle when Ash made the startling realization of who she was all this time.
"B-Belle?" Pikachu snickered at his trainer's tone of disbelief and immediately went to get its much desired belly rub from her. It knew Sabrina was Belle the moment it picked up her scent and the sheer similarities between them. Starstruck and lost for words, the speechless boy just sat there, like a damn dumbass.
"Hi Ash." His mind took a moment to process, of all the bombshells dropped on him today, which is many mind you. This was the one that Ash had the most difficult time processing. Screw the Great Kanto Reset conspiracies or the repopulation plan, this was the plot twist of the century that Ash did not see coming.
"You- You're Sabrina?" Belle chuckled and sway her body back and forth. The idea of living a double life came from her parents, though initially she was opposed to it, she came to really love it when she met warm and nice people like Ash who showed her what it's like to live a simple life.
"Mhmm, dad wanted me to experience the life of a normal teenager rather than just being a gym leader, so I became Belle." Ash was ecstatic, he reunited with his teacher, two girls he had lunch with during a cafe, a girl he saved from being eaten by zombies and now his deskmate was right here with him!
"All this time, I never knew!" Sabrina crossed her arms and pouted at him.
"I would be offended if you did." She really is Belle, Arceus pinched him now.
"Sabrina, no Belle, wait-" Belle chuckled at Ash's visibly confusion and stroked Espeon's back.
"Sabrina or Belle is fine, juuuust don't mention Belle in front of them, only Miss Roxanne is aware of my identity." Actually that makes sense, the two are always seen talking with one another. Ash assumed they were close friends which is weird in the context of teacher and student, but in the dynamics of acquaintance and colleagues, that made perfect sense.
"Got it, no wonder you two seemed to get along so well." Roxanne is absolutely awesome, considerate and kind to her despite being much older than Sabrina.
"She's a good teacher and friend, she always checks in on me to make sure I was fitting in." The pensive tone from her made Ash concerned. He inched closer when he saw tears filled her eyes again and instantly placed an arm around her shoulder. She leaned towards his chest and buried her nose onto the crook of his neck, the vivid images of people screaming for her help when the infected attack Saffron was just horrifying. She hated it, she hated how powerless she was when Rattatas poured into the streets and bit everyone around her. People were yelling at her, asking her to do something, anything.
"I felt so powerless Ash, everyone was screaming and crying for help. I couldn't do anything, I tried to evacuate everyone and kill as many infected I can but-" A soft pair of lips were planted on her hair as Ash tightened his hold around her. She felt his warm body rubbing against her own and thorough feeling of his fingers running through her jet black hair.
"I'm sorry you have to go through that." The soft raspy whisper comforted her for the moment, but the unknown fate of her parents and being separated by everyone was just difficult to cope with even now.
"I don't know where my parents are right now, I don't know if they are okay or-or if they are still in Saffron. I was forced to go along to the center with everyone and my father was left coordinating the defense. I was too young, too inexperienced to deal with this, they said." Ash rubbed her back in a circular motion, hoping to comfort her as much as possible.
"Your parents would be fine Sabrina, you always told me how awesome you dad is right? We have to remain calm." Sabrina shook her head and stared at him with anguish and pain visible in her eyes. What does he know about losing family, did he lose his mother? No, she is right here with him safe and sound while her parents are at Arceus knows where!
"Calm!? How can you remain calm when you know what the infected are capable of?" Ash interlocked her fingers and clasped them gently, holding them firmly to let her know he is by her side and he knows what it's like to be constantly worried about others.
"Calm is what you have to be when people look up to you, and it's all you can be when things are out of your control. If I lose it and panic, everyone here would panic too." She lowered her gaze and let out a pent up sigh.
"I- you're right Ash, and to think I'm supposed to be a gym leader. Maybe I'm really not cut out for it." The self loathing from her was immediately met with Ash holding her shoulders.
"Hey I didn't say that cool line just to make you feel bad about yourself! Having you by my side Belle is- comforting. I'm glad you're with me. I sometimes worry about you and our classmates when I go to sleep, thinking that the worst has happened to all of you. I'm trying my best to remain calm but even I have my limits." The fear of failure, the fear of losing everyone he held dear to him was just terrifying to Ash. His quivering voice and shaking body was neither from the cold, but the supple warmth of Sabrina's body did much to lift his spirits.
"I'm here with you now Ash." The lithe hug from her was reciprocated, now reunited after a month of separation, they finally could sit next together side by side, just like old times. Red cheeks and flushed expression, the two teenagers awkwardly stared with one another but found much solace in each other's arms. Sabrina stared at the skies again and smiled at the fact she finally got to go stargazing with Ash.
"I remembered you promised me you would show me Pallet Town's most beautiful stargazing spots." His lips curled upwards at the silly promise he gave to her, to think she actually remembers it. The pair sat in silence and stared up at the sky, watching the occasional shooting stars and flickering lights that were reflected in their eyes.
