AN: Well had a long talk with some people about the Harem in this. Honestly, I'm not surprised, that is all that was talked about this is DxD and Issei we're talking about. I'm balancing two stores here so certain arcs will intercept like the arc we are going into. While other arcs will be extended or shortened. Must find a month for Genkai training. In the manga, it's only one month. Certain events will play differently. So before this arc starts, I'd say Hiei as a d class is faster than the average knight.

I have too many tabs opened I lost this for a few days lol.

Chapter 5

"They are all precious members of my Peerage and I offer you the choice again. Issei Hyoudou will you join my Peerage?" Those words played in his head as Issei took in the information. He knew Rias must have had her Peerage at school with her but he was surprised, that Akeno, Koneko, and Kiba three of the most popular students were all devils. Koneko was looking at him with large eyes. He knew Rias would come asking again but he had hoped to turn her down, but now he wasn't sure what to do. That stupid demon might have only been the size of his hand but with the way, Botan spoke he wasn't that strong on his own. He wasn't an idiot, Koenma said the situation was desperate which meant that there were stronger demons. But at the same time, there was something in him that rebelled against such a path.

"What are the benefits of joining?" Issei asked.

"As a Devil, you will have enhanced physical abilities such as superhuman strength, endurance, and enhanced senses such as sight and hearing. You will also have perfect vision in the dark. Not to mention whatever added benefit you might get from whatever piece chooses you." Rias explained with a smile. It sounded like a good deal and with Issei's luck of late he figured sooner or later he'd find himself on death's doorstep again, but that small rebellious part of him despised the thought of such a shortcut to strength. There were also the last two times he did something without thinking, and that cost him his father and he lost his life in the process.

"Well if I'm being honest I was originally going to decline," Kiba, Akeno, and Koneko all lifted their eyebrows in shock. "I'm sorry but I need more time to think about it. It would certainly help me in my new job but maybe I'm being selfish here but I want to see how far I can go with my own strength." He bowed apologetically.

"I think I can understand, it is a rather life-changing decision and you were just brought back from your… near death, pseudo death… pseudo-death-like state." Rias looked taken aback but she nodded in acceptance. "How about this you spend the day with us and see how the life of a devil is different from the life of a human?" Before he could respond he was cut off by a familiar voice.

"Sorry, but he can't." Rias and Issei looked toward the voice and Koenma was there. "You don't have time to sit around and rest Issei, trouble is about to raise its ugly head."

"It's a toddler." Koneko noticed.

"Koneko!" Rias chided her. "This is the Prince of the Spirit World and technically one of Issei's contractors."

"Indeed. I am the great Koenma!" Koenma puffed out his chest. "All that aside… THERE'S TROUBLE!" Koenma grabbed Issei's collar shaking him. "The three artifacts of darkness have been stolen and made their way here!"

"Oh my." Akeno covered her mouth in shock. Rias frowned somewhat remembering her brother talking about them.

"I'm kinda tired can't I start tomorrow?" Issei yawned.

"IDIOT! THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT! If these artifacts are used to their full potential the whole world will be in danger. Lost lives, captured souls, and a bunch of other nasty things. Got it?" Koenma jabbed his finger at Issei.

"How the heck am I supposed to fight people that can steal those then?!" Issei argued.

"As our only agent in the living world, you're the only one capable of stopping them." Koenma sighed.

"Well that's great but all I can really do is punch harder now." Issei countered.

"Tty to gather your spiritual energy to your finger." Issei did just that and a small orb appeared at the end of his right index.

"Wow, what's this?" Issei stared at it.

"That is your spirit energy. All you have to do now is aim and fire. Imagine a trigger and pull tight. But, until you train your spirit muscle persay you can only use it once a day." Koenma warned before Issei released it.

"That was close… uh how do I stop it?" Issei asked. Causing the room to sigh at his lack of knowledge. An explanation later and Koenma started his answer.

"Your chief concern is recovering the items. The first is the Shadow Sword will make a monster of whoever it cuts, the Forlorn Hope emits a cryptic power at the full moon and the Orb of Baast can capture living souls for later use or consumption especially those of children and young adults." Koenma showed him pictures of each.

"Who the hell came up with these things?!" Issei was honestly a little terrified.

"Understand these were forged by darkness and prey on the weak and despite. They were created to keep balance in the universe but in the wrong hands who knows what may happen? You need to retrieve them quickly." Koenma pressed the importance of these artifacts.

"Alright. I guess I owe you for giving me my life back. I'll get these back before you can say oops." Issei bragged. The others in the room shook their heads at Issei's bravado.

"Good. All we've been able to find out is they are around Kuoh's uptown area so start there. When you complete this there will be a reward fitting this job after all you are my employee." Koenma nodded and disappeared.

"Reward?" Issei cocked his head in confusion. "I'M GETTING PAID FOR THIS? OH YEAH!"

"I guess this gives me a chance to explain how a contract would work should you join my Peerage. We Devils make deals with humans and neutral factions to gain more power or reputation. Reincarnation Devils like Kiba, Koneko, and Akeno complete more contracts to climb the ranks in Devil society and the higher you can climb in Devil society the more of a reputation is built and the stronger you become. As you gain strength you will eventually get your own Peerage." Rias cut his celebration short. "Before you ask we don't take their souls that would void our alliance with Spirit World." Issei wasn't really listening by that point. He had heard he could get his own peerage if he took her offer and an old dream of his resurfaced. A dream he got from his father. The dream of having a harem. His father use to talk about that a lot when his mom wasn't around, and Issei agreed that it would be amazing. Who could blame him he was a guy after all he loved women, especially beautiful ones. Before he could indulge in his fantasy dream Katase and Murayama stuck him over the head.

"Well, I better be going." Issei headed to the door. As the door closed Rias looked at the other members of her peerage.

"This is Issei's first job as spirit detective so we should let him do it on his own but if he's hunting down thieves strong and smart enough to steal from the Spirit World vault I would feel better if you or Koneko would follow him and assist him if things get too dangerous," Rias told Kiba.

Issei made his way down the crowded street wondering where some demons could hide. He focused his eyes as he looked wondering if it was like the last time and tried to see if anyone had horns but so far no one did. Sighing he sat down and thought about his life now. 'So I'm some sort of cop for the spirit world.' He wondered how Katase and Murayama would react. He didn't know how to explain what happened next but it felt as if something shrugged as if answering his question. He was about to question it until he saw an incredibly beautiful woman walk by with straight black hair that stopped on the mid of her back with a sway in her step.

"Hey, kid wake up what's wrong?"

"Kid are you ok?"

"Call an ambulance!" Brought back to reality thanks to the commotion Issei stopped looking at the women and went to see what happened. A boy with blank eyes lay there while the people around him tried to wake him to no avail. Issei noticed a small cloud-like thing escape the kid's mouth and start moving away. Issei remembering about the Orb of Baast followed and kept a distance. He ducked his way through a sketchy alley barely avoiding a confrontation with some thugs and noticed the same woman from earlier exiting the alley with a smirk and a hand on her rather large bag. Something told him to follow her so he started after at a pace that wouldn't alert suspicion.

"Koneko that woman, she's a…" Kiba started but Koneko interrupted him.

"We should tell Buchou." Her voice held a dangerous edge to it.

"Sire! We have information on the thieves!" Ogre ran into Koenma's office. Koenma jumped nearly two feet off his chair.

"Ah! Don't startle me like that Ogre!" Koenma fixed his hat. "So what do we know?" A large screen dropped down and three silhouettes were shown. The first one revealed a rather good-looking red-haired teen.

"His name is Kurama and that's all we have on him, he's a total mystery." The screen switch to a scowling black-haired teen with a white bandana.

"Hiei is another mystery. Origin unknown, no criminal record, but informants call him cutthroat." The last picture made Koenma sigh, it was a black-haired fallen, and here he was hoping this wouldn't cause some political shit show.

"I know what your thinking sir but let us get through this, shall we? Rayner of the Grigori, classic fallen, wanted for multiple murders but given her connections we've been unable to send a squad to detain her, sources say she loves to deceive humans by acting like a shy and sweet young woman only the reveal her true self before killing her victims. Many who know her call her vicious, petty, sadistic, treacherous, vindictive, arrogant, cruel, barbaric, and very deceptive."

"Some things can never be easy huh, Orge?" Koenma slumps down and pulls out a phone.

"HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!" Botan storms in through the door and phases through the screen. "How dare you send Issei on such a dangerous mission so soon?!"

"We didn't have a choice you know how dangerous those artifacts are." Botan slams her hands down once Koenma stopped talking.

"That's why you should let me train him first!" She points out.

"I don't know how much good a week's worth of training will do." Koenma sighs.

"A week? Surely these thieves can't be that dangerous." Botan said in a worried tone.

"It's not them I'm worried about." Koenma looks up. "My dad returns in a week."

The rain pelted Issei as he followed the woman who he was certain took the soul. Issei wiped his face and looked around. "Where the hell am I?" There were quite a few forested areas near Kuoh but Issei was more focused on not getting caught as he followed her but her tail seemed to end in this forest. He noticed a large circular section in the clouds letting in sunlight.

"Well, that's new." Issei scratched his head. "Well no point chickening out now. I already jumped head first into this life without thinking."
