As he watched her go, Grady turned and entered the main building of the compound. This was a converted warehouse that most of the compound had been built around, mainly due to it's size. He scanned his card again, as he opened the door, as he waved to the guard. This place had a lot of security, but it was needed really. Masrani spared no expense, and that was done for a reason.
Inside, there were many people milling around, as he headed for the armory. There were a few of his men already there. A balding man dressed almost entirely in camo was disassembling a rifle, as he would rise slightly watching Grady enter. "The Ice queen came by again?" Grady chuckled as he shrugged, walking over to the mini fridge, and taking a coke out as he got himself comfortable.
As comfortable as he might be in this place, anyhow. It was good that Masrani and Dearing were mostly hands-off, at least until they wanted something. So far, Grady had been successful in doing that. Fresh out of the Navy, he had allowed himself to listen to Masrani's pitch, doubtful as he had been. It had sounded like a crazy idea, but Masrani was able to relate it to his past experience with Dolphins that made him rethink- and then they had figured out how to make it work-
"She just wanted to know how we were getting along. Really. I am not too worried about it. It's corporate getting overworked is all. I think she's over reacting- but I think there's some screws we can definitely work to tighten up. Masrani wans some reports by the end of the month now, going over things in detail. Plus got my ass buried in paperwork until next Tuesday."
Cooper shook his head, polishing the barrel of the rifle, as he would lean back, grabbing a coke of his own. Cooper and Grady went back a bit, they had both been in the Navy together, and that had forged a bond between the two of them. So when Masrani had approached Grady regarding the Mesozoic project, it had not been much of a question regarding whether he'd ask Cooper to join or not.
They had gone out in the few times as part of dinosaur containment missions, and some tagging missions as well. It was something that they knew well, over the past three years, both of them had gained the skills and understanding required to find these things. Not that it had been easy.
Grady put the drink down, as he'd think it over. "Rodriguez wanted to check in with you- there's something about Blue's medicinal regimen, as well as some interesting things with the latest x-rays…" Grady stared off into the distance, as he wasn't really following, the field was more his area of expertise after all.
"-Oh, and also something about that Infant she's working with. The one that they found over by Vegas." Grady turned, as he would shake his head, it coming back to him. Vegas. Now that had been something, although there was no question about how non-routine each and every sighting was. But it was also something that got him to sit up straight. He rubbed his shoulder, he was still a bit sore.
"She's still over at the lab in the back?" He was not sure if she'd left for the day. He didn't go over to that side all that much, it was beyond him what they did back there. Not his place, as he glanced at Cooper, and the other man nodded. Grady groaned, as he tossed the can in the fridge, it really couldn't wait, he supposed, as he decided. "I'll check in with you later. We still up for Trivia night?" Cooper nodded, giving him a thumbs up to go, as he left.
Grady walked through the hall, passing several sections ranging from a video bank of CCTV monitors, each screen recording a different section of the compound. On his other side, there was a small area, it was sectioned off by dividers, but it served as a veterinary clinic. A makeshift one of course, mostly for smaller animals, as the larger ones usually had to be tended to in the field.
Rodriguez was here, as the young woman turned to face him. She'd been pulled from the peace corps this one, Zia Rodriguez, former medic now turned 'paleo veterinarian.'. So far, the only one in the world that they knew of at the moment. It was still a pretty niche specialty, after all with it only being three years since dinosaurs had been formally recognized to exist.
"Grady, just in time." He turned, as he saw what was on the table next to her. There was a metal table, on which there was a baby Velociraptor, strapped to the table, and there were several tubes going in and out of her side, leading to computers that were clearly monitoring her vitals. Grady swallowed, he'd been expecting this, but still, it was an unavoidable subject, when it was right in front of his face.
There was a blue stripe on the side of her head, and for all intents and purposes, she might be seen as a smaller version of 'Blue', or so her moniker was. Still, that was where the similarities ended. Grady had seen the recordings. She was considered to be… different. Maybe because she'd been found alone, without any other of her kind nearby, which was unusual in itself. The area had been thoroughly searched, with no sign of any other individuals.
"We've had latest update on the medicals-" she began, as Grady stepped to the side, hands on hips as he would continue looking down at the baby raptor, then back up at the woman. "And the raptor." He gave her some space to talk, as he saw from the look of her face, the furrow of her brow that it was something serious.
"It's the raptor. It was tracked, But not by us." Grady stared, not comprehending. "We can't locate the microchip, looks like a custom job, fried itself right after we came into possession of the animal." Grady felt that was something that could go into the report but again he wasn't really the one to talk to about this, he felt.
"Look, I guess that's a thing for Masrani. But me? You should've been here five minutes ago- Ms. Dearing was just here-" He realized that might be more than a bit late telling her this, but again, he didn't overmuch care about the specifics. But it did feel like a missed opportunity.
"The raptor. You said something about her vitals?" He was curious about that too, The raptor's breathing was not quite shallow, but it was rising up and down, almost like the drugs… He couldn't put his finger on it, as he tapped his chin. Far above his pay grade, but it was intriguing. The woman stepped forward, pulling forward a laptop, and turning it over, so that they might see what was on it.
"Yes. She's perfectly healthy. Some might even say suspiciously so. This is not an animal that was malnourished. Abandoned by her pack was the official speculation. But if that were the case, your men would have seen others nearby." That was true enough, they had not seen any evidence of any others. Masrani had been confused as well, but his influence had been enough to keep it out of the news.
Most of the time, they couldn't, and something like this…it would have been all over had it not been suppressed very quickly. Grady had been relieved, he didn't need to be reminded of just how close he'd came. Not that he thought his job was in any jeopardy, but at the same time, this job by its very nature had him flying by the seat of his pants, without too much information to be able to figure out what to do next.
"You're saying…." She nodded, as she would turn the next slide, there was something else. The x-rays, as well as the genetic reports that had come in. "We did some genetic samples. We got a match." She looked at him, and Grady felt a pit in the bottom of his stomach. The slide changed and Grady rubbed his temples, as he saw what was on the slide.
"Jesus christ. You really should have waited before Dearing left to tell me this." He saw the results clear as day, the genetic profiles indicating a 'match' between Blue and the small velociraptor. Fuck. That wasn't supposed to be possible, and both of them knew it. Not after there had been that moratorium on illegal cloning in 2006. The government had enough problems on its hands with all the animals running wild.
"What the hell am I supposed to do with this information?" Owen felt himself really confused, this was out of his wheelhouse for certain, and as well something that he didn't know if he felt entirely comfortable dealing with on his own. "I can put it on a report, but besides that…
Zia nodded, there was some look of disappointment, as she stepped back from the laptop. "Yes it can go on a report. ,but besides that, there's still a larger question Grady. A bigger question you and I ought to be asking. This animal, it's too young to have been cloned when Blue was out there in the wild." Grady paled, as he suddenly understood the ramifications of what she was telling him. Why she wasn't telling Grady or Dearing.
"It's because I know you don't have the technological know-how- No offense," She said as an aside, as she looked back at the raptor. "You are quite literally one of the only people in this building right now that I can ask this of. Someone with access to Blue- they had this specimen cloned, It really was extremely troubling, as he took that in, and the world seemed a bit smaller for a second.
After a moment, he cleared his throat. "Keep this between us for now. I…can't deal with this shit now." Indeed, he really couldn't, he thought as he rubbed his head in annoyance. It felt like this was coming at the worst time, sandwiched between the upcoming deadline, plus the fallout with the raptors. One catastrophe at a time, he could handle… at least, for now, as he'd step away, looking back at her. "But…I will get back to this. I promise you that." He hoped that was all that he had to worry about.
