Grady was still dumbfounded, as he flipped over the documents, as well as the recording that Claire had made of the conversation with Zia. Granted, she had been smart to record that conversation, although it was still clear to them both that they had at least someone on their side there. Potentially. He could not be exactly sure yet what he was going to do, but he had already a plan in mind. That was why they were here, having established a few lines of contact.
"They didn't say I'm fired yet. There's that at least,"" he sighed as would be speaking into the phone, looking down from the rooftop. This was his vantage point for now, a safe location that he could see events going on. He had been in contact with Levine since their meeting at the National park, and he had also been in contact with Claire. He might be persona non grata for the time being, but he would do his best to keep his head clear and informed of what was happening out there.
The more that he knew the better. He shook his head, he still couldn't believe that he had been kept in the dark about the raptors. That was bad, very bad. But he could not shake his head free of lingering doubts. There was still something that did not smell right.
Still, he was going to push that to the back of his mind. Claire had coordination now with Cooper, and of course this meant that he knew exactly when and where they were going. He looked with his binoculars as he could see the cars coming in some streets over. It was standard operating procedure, what he would have done. Now he could not see the animals, but he knew that it would only be a matter of time. From the look of the trailers, they had brought all four raptors. So Beta was going to be out in the field now.
He grimaced, as he slowly moved, crouch-walking on the roof. He did not have his rifle with him, he had been forced to return it due to it being property of Masrani Global after his suspension. He would much rather have it, but the fact that he did not meant that he was sticking to the roofs. Now he would see just what there was. So far everything was quiet. Until he sensed it, a smell like rotting meat somewhere, it felt like it was just wafting in on the breeze, but it was enough to send shivers down his spine.
Then he heard it, as he could hear the tremors from this far out. He lowered his voice to a whisper. "What did you say they found again?" He had heard it was a large animal. Although that was troubling, as most of the large ones were accounted for. At least he knew that they had been tagged early.
He was still far enough away to be able to not really worry, as he heard the rumbling as the animal moved. The streets were deserted, the alert system had done its job, as they should have. He swiveled the binoculars to the side, and he saw the raptors. They were still far enough away, but he knew he couldn't be smelled yet. He was sure that it would not be a good idea for him to be found out just yet.
Cooper was walking behind them, the remote in his hand, as he had figured. It seemed like he was almost herding them all together now. It was….telling that he had a group of men with him, all wearing similar remotes. Heh, he chuckled to himself, as he realized then that he wouldn't be rehired.
They had replaced him, although he wondered…something was nagging at the back of his mind. It had been too easy for them to do so. He frowned, as he remembered how it had been for him. He had worked, trained… he elt that it couldn't be explained by what Zia had said. Not everything. He had to know.
But not now. It was too risky to even try now, he believed, it was not going to be easy to work through this for him. The past few years, he thought…things weren't making sense. But he had no time now, as he heard the snarls of the raptors below. They were on the hunt, they had smelt something…
The animal came into view as it turned the corner, and Owen's eyes went wide as he would clamber over the side, the buildings were quite close here, and so he could cross from one to another easily. Not that he thought it was going to be necessary yet. But he always had an escape plan.
It was huge. Easily the size of a two story building, the animal must have been the length of a school bus from tip to tail. Maybe more, he thought. It's head was the first thing visible, as it roared, and Owen had to cover his ears. A red viscous substance was dripping down from it's teeth, falling onto the pavement below. As it moved, the Tyrannosaurus Rex seemed to be fluid, moving faster than might be expected for such a large animal.
Owen wished he had a camera, as he got his answer via the phone. "The call said it was a predator- why Owen what are you seeing?" He had to wait on answering her, he was far too lost for words. This was…beyond words.
Owen knew this one. This T-rex. Almost everyone did. It was the one that had crossed the border in the first official acknowledgement of the animals. He shook his head, as he stood up. The raptors below were snarling, and there was a sense of agitation about them, as he could hear the yelling below.
"We have the bogey in the sights. Just make sure to get them lined up and ready!" He dialed the binoculars in closer, as he could see them. The raptors hesitating, brief seconds as the shocks came in their system. Was this really the sonic at work? He thought, as he saw the way that their heads jerked back, their toes clacked, and the way that they snarled?
It wasn't natural, he could tell that now. Beta was in the back of the pack, but Blue was beside her. Hovering almost around her, as Delta and Echo would be leading. Interesting, he thought. He had not had the chance to see Beta out in the field yet. This looked like it might be her first time actually. The younger raptor looked confused, probably due to the unfamiliar urban environment. That would make a lot of sense really, he thought.
The Tyrannosaur roared again, as it would begin to close the distance between itself and the raptors. Cooper shouted again, as the other raptors would begin charging towards it. Owen could see that they were trying to surround it. Delta and Echo going first, and Blue and Beta holding back to the rear. It was a good tactic, boxing it in like that- or at least attempting to. The rest of the tactical team hung back, holding onto their rifles, as they watched.
Grady was sure that it was going to be interesting. They had not gone after anything this big. It troubled him at the back of his mind too, there should be more backup than this shouldn't there?
The Rex was surrounded shortly, as the raptors began to bay and bark and snarl at the large animal. It was going hard…he thought, as he would feel that he just needed to document what went on here.
As the rex bellowed, the men started to surround it, holding their batons up high. He could see the stun prods activated from here. The raptors didn't even attempt to attack, although they did snarl, as Owen realized why. They seemed to be stamping, whining, again almost as if very agitated.
That sort of lined up with what he had been told. That…was troubling. He knew that he'd never have done it like that, as he heard the sound of a rifle firing. The animal roared as he could see a soft 'puff' hit the animal's side.
Roaring, the Rex turned, as the raptors backed up, but the Rex did not get around to seeing where it was. Frustrated, it would snarl, sniffing the air. Almost as if it was temporarily ignoring the Raptors. Owen wasn't sure what was happening.
The tranquilizer… it couldn't be? But it stepped forward, as the raptors parted much like the red sea. Owen's eyes widened as he whispered. "I don't understand. They shot it, but they are letting the raptors let it through?" He was still working his way through, Claire should know more about what this was, as she was in charge of the main operations side of things. There was some things he couldn't figure out.
He heard Claire's voice on the other end, it was slightly breathed and shaking… "Be careful Owen. I looked over the logistics. There's something funny here. There's no cargo containment on the manifest logs." Owen frowned again, as he swung the binoculars again. She was right. There should have been, he stood up, his breath shaking. He could see it…looking right at him.
Oh shit, he thought as the Rex started towards him, and there was a fact that came to the forefront of his mind. This was like a locomotive…but as he looked back, he could see that Cooper didn't seem to notice. What was going on? Nothing made sense here, he thought.
Nothing to really indicate anything was wrong. He backed up, thinking back to where his bike was. The raptors started to crow again, as he saw something….the Rex charging straight at him, right on the building roof. He had no idea how it even knew it was there.
Owen didn't think, he just turned and began to run.
