Index Astartes - The Imperial Fists: Praetorians Of Ruin And Rancour

The remnants of the Emperor of Mankind's VII Legion are feared throughout the Imperium as a scourge of man, utterly without mercy and utterly without chance for redemption. They devote their lives to empowering the Ruinous Powers, whilst possessing a fierce loathing of their kindred, most of all the Dark Angels, Iron Warriors and White Scars. Ten millennia after the heresy, this legion of fiends has fixed their baleful and sinister gaze to the returning Imperium, and the daemonic husk of Rogal Dorn has sworn to burn Chogoris, whilst grappling with his own fractured mind…

"The Ruinous Powers command us, not the False-Emperor, whose name we curse. Dorn guides us, not the other primarchs, whose beliefs tear their progeny apart. Dishonour shields us, not nobility, whose believers are weak and naïve. Fear our name, for it is doom."

-Captain Fafnir Rann, amidst the First Battle Of Armageddon against the forces of the Forgemaw Chapter.

Origins

The tale of the Imperial Fists began in the dying days of the Unification Wars. Recruits and aspirants came from all manner of stock from every region on Terra, giving the legion a unique culture and set of tactics. Yet despite being a multicultural force, the legion earned a reputation as being slow to anger, prideful, and quick to insult. During the Wars Of Unification, the VII Legion participated extensively, razing many citadels and factions, whilst raising many more new citadels, fortresses and defences in the name of the Master Of Mankind.

As the Great Crusade began, the Imperial Fists marched forth at the head of a great fleet. They were crusaders first and foremost, heralds of conquest and perpetual warfare. At their helm was First Captain Sigismund, one of the greatest Astartes warriors to ever live, tied only with Jago Sevatarion, First Captain of the Night Lords. Sigismund was the most prominent voice of the legion's crusader ideology, expressing that the Great Crusade was Mankind's right to master space taken form. He vocalised that the Adeptus Astartes would always be required to maintain the Imperium, for the threats were endless and eternal. This belief led the Imperial Fists to fortify and invoke a strict rulership of any world they captured, ensuring its immortal loyalty to the Master Of Mankind and His empire. For this, they became regarded as the Imperium's foundations, the ones who would lay down the future for millennia to come.

Due to its proximity to Terra, the VII Legion were chosen to act as representatives to the Great Empire Of Dorn, specifically to their capital, the frozen world of Inwit. With frost grinding beneath their boots, the Imperial Fists came upon a hard figure, merciless and stern, encased in gold and burgundy. A primarch.

A Soldier Of Ice And Stone

Inwit, whilst possessing harsh conditions, bore a sizeable population of humans. Millennia ago, during the height of Humanity's Golden Age, the people of Inwit constructed many of Humanity's greatest battleships and weapons. One such weapon became known as the Phalanx, a titanic weapons platform of a most supreme design. The size of a small cosmic satellite, the Phalanx remained above the atmosphere of Inwit, decaying and collapsing. To the barbarians of Inwit, meteors and shooting stars were a common occurrence, spanning across the planet's skies. Yet one particular meteor would transform their future. A drop pod, bearing a twin-headed eagle, crashed into the planet's icy surface, mere metres away from one of Inwit's many nomadic tribes. Whilst fear was the primary emotion running through the minds of the nomads, undertones of curiosity and a seemingly divine urging led them to the drop pod and, weapons in hand, they revealed its contents. To the surprise of all, a child emerged, bloodied. The patriarch of the nomadic tribe, a moral man wielding the name Dorn, recognised a power and divinity within the boy, and adopted the young primarch into his House, giving him a name: Rogal.

Rogal Dorn's childhood was pleasant; his adoptive father taught him much in the ways of war and diplomacy, grooming the primarch as his successor. As a primarch, the progeny of the Master Of Mankind, Rogal Dorn's superior intelligence and martial prowess earnt him the admiration and allegiance of not only those subservient to the House Of Dorn, but also of the numerous inhabitants of the frozen wastes of Inwit. Yet Dorn possessed no desire to rule. He wished only to serve as the hand of his father, and to defend the people whom he vowed to protect. At the head of Inwit's armies, Rogal Dorn set off on his odyssey, colonising and conquering the nearby planets of the local Inwit Cluster. The honed mind of a primarch is a rare and most deadly weapon and, as such, those opposing the forces of Rogal Dorn had no strategies that could not be countered by the great primarch. Within a decade, over a hundred worlds flew the banner of the House Of Dorn, and pledged loyalty and tithes to Dorn's adoptive father, now the Emperor Of The House Of Dorn. During this period of prosperity, Dorn mounted a starcraft and flew to the Phalanx. Intrigued by the ship, he reforged it, piecing it together by hand until it was fully prepared for interstellar travel.

Nearly three decades after the finding of Rogal Dorn, the Emperor Of Dorn passed in his sleep, peacefully and surrounded by those he cared for above all others, particularly Rogal Dorn. The death of his father left Dorn's mind in anarchy. The primarch began to dress in all black. Grief and anger and hatred were the only emotions that coursed through the primarch's mind, leading to Rogal Dorn, now Emperor Of Dorn, to overlook many, many issues that sunk their roots into his empire. Through a combination of incessant mourning and furious temper, the growing cults of Inwit were left unchecked by the Emperor Of Dorn. Various tribes and subspecies of Beastmen arose from the Ice Hives of Inwit, whilst hooded figures muttered dark words to dark deities. Even after five years of mourning, Rogal Dorn wore only black, and loathed the universe for robbing him of his only family. However, a crisis would force Rogal Dorn out of his well of depression, and into the arms of a civil war.

Whilst the new Emperor shed tears over the coffin of his father, the underhives of Inwit amassed a great empire of Beastmen, preaching that the Eon of Ruin was heralded, and that they would partake in the ushering of a new era. The lord of this hidden empire named himself Khaarghur Pyrehand, Hound-Prophet Of Inwit. Named after his scarred and burnt hands, this Beastman possessed a keen sense of intelligence and cunning, deceiving his way into the upper ranks of Inwit's society. The Beastmen initiated a series of acts of sabotage and coups, isolating armies, destroying supply lines and wreaking havoc on communications. With everything in place, Khaarghur enacted his plan, and the Beastmen launched a great revolution, crushing numerous regiments of the Empire Of Inwit whilst seizing major cities, armouries and fortresses. These acts occurred all across the Inwit Cluster, forcing the Empire into a state of anarchy.

This chaos was what finally broke Dorn out of his cycle of depression, and the primarch immediately seized command of the armed forces, using his extreme intelligence to reorganise the Empire's logistics and mount a defence against the mutated foe. Rogal Dorn was no coward and, as such, he led his armies from the vanguard, cleaving his way through hordes of Beastmen with his legendary chainsword, Storm's Teeth. Yet for all his efforts, the Beastmen had the numerical superiority, greater logistics and the weapon of surprise. Multiple worlds fell to the endless hordes, and soon Inwit remained as one of the last few bastions of Humanity. Khaarghur Pyrehand commanded his great armies, annihilating humans from the very fabrics of reality with his master of sorcery. Upon reaching Inwit, the Beastmen encountered a fortress like none other, planned by Rogal Dorn and constructed by the unyielding men and women of the frozen wastes of Inwit. Regardless, the Beastmen initiated a siege of Inwit, intending to feed the planet to their Dark Gods. Warlocks amidst their ranks broke the minds of the populace, empowering the Dark Gods and forcing the humans to lose ground. But even after a year had passed, the defences of Inwit had not yet been broken. It is said that one day, when the bombardments of the Beastmen had halted, Dorn came to the walls of Inwit's greatest Ice Hive and gazed upon the ruined land of his home. Infuriated, Rogal Dorn announced that the siege would end at that moment, and the primarch sallied forth with his elite veterans and honour guard, carving a bloody path through the mutated abhumans that formed their mighty opponent. Within mere moments, Dorn arrived to the skull throne of Khaarghur Pyrehand, revving his chainsword whilst the Hound-Prophet uttered ruinous curses and hexes. The primarch sought vengeance for all the pain and suffering brought upon the folk of Inwit by the Hound-Prophet, and instead Dorn cast aside Storm's Teeth in favour of his bare hands. Great, muscled hands wrapped around Pyrehand's burning throat, and the grip tightened evermore as Dorn swore to the Beastman that his crimes ended there. Utilising his final breath, the sorcerer broke through Dorn's anger, forcing his mind through the primarch's. Khaarghur filled Rogal Dorn's mind with horrifying visions of the future: Inwit aflame, his people tortured, his friends torn limb from limb. Haunted by the visions, Dorn did not hesitate, snapping the Beastman's neck and ending his reign of blood. Their prophet dead, the Beastmen shattered into warbands, turning on in eachother whilst purged by the approaching armies of man. Inwit was at peace, but the soul of Rogal Dorn was not. The war had left him scarred and fearful of the future. In place of his once benevolent self, Dorn had warped into a man of draconian tyranny. No longer did he believe in hope, only pessimism and cynicism. Yet pieces of the old Dorn remained: his sense of justice, his courage and his zeal. Once Dorn had been convinced of a cause, he stalwartly defended that cause, no matter the cause nor cost.

Four years of civil war had torn the Empire Of Dorn into numerous shards, to be meticulously pieced back together by its Emperor. And the Emperor obliged. Dorn had become a tyrant, yet it must not be said that he was unjust. Within half a decade, Inwit had near entirely recovered from the darkest period in its history. Its borders had been restored, its people had been revitalised, and it appeared that Inwit would live forever on. Aboard the Phalanx, Rogal Dorn received news of an armada at the borders of Inwit, crying the name of the Emperor Of Mankind. This apparent Emperor sought an audience with the primarch, which the primarch granted. Aboard the Phalanx, Dorn knelt to his true gene-sire, and pledged his sword to the services of the Imperium Of Man. Aboard the Phalanx, an oath was sworn that would see the galaxy in flames…

The Great Crusade

Upon his induction into the Imperium Of Man, Rogal Dorn was gifted with the full might of the VII Legion, the Imperial Fists. The primarch and legionnaires immediately established a close bond due to their similar philosophies, ideologies, and views on warfare. Dorn quickly formed many differing bonds with his fellow primarchs, such as Ferrus Manus and Konrad Curze.

When Mankind came across the Astranii Machine Empire, three primarchs and their legions came to crush their mighty foe: Horus Lupercal, Rogal Dorn, and the future Warmaster Ferrus Manus. Aided by the Mechanicum, whom had declared the Astranii Hereteks for their use of forbidden technology, the Iron Hands, Luna Wolves and Imperial Fists quickly ended the Astranii at every turn, their superior battle doctrine and strength overcoming the technological supremacy of the Astranii. However, Rogal Dorn and Ferrus Manus entered a dispute over their goals for the war. Dorn wished a simple compliance, believing that Humanity could benefit from the Astranii's technology. Ferrus Manus, due to his close relationship with the Mechanicum, wished the utter annihilation of the Machine Empire, believing that whilst the Astranii existed, they posed a threat to the Imperium's security. Horus Lupercal intervened when Dorn's patience wore out, and he attempted to attack Ferrus Manus. After listening to numerous testimonies from esteemed legionaries, Horus succeeded in making both primarchs agree on a truce until the war had ended. Upon the end of the Astranii Campaign, Rogal Dorn and Ferrus Manus agreed on a duel between their champions to settle their dispute. Ferrus Manus selected a great Iron Hands Centurion, named Thos. In response, Rogal Dorn selected the venerable Sigismund from the ranks of the VII Legion. Sigismund, renowned as the greatest Astartes swordsman to ever live, clashed blades with a worthy opponent on that day. Thos proved himself a formidable enemy, overpowering Sigismund many times, though the Imperial Fist continued the duel. After many hours of duelling, Sigismund had Thos at his mercy, his power sword against the Iron Hand's throat. Thos refused to yield, stating that he would fight until death. Rogal Dorn watched with intense fascination as Ferrus Manus approached Sigismund, questioning if the First Captain was willing to slay a fellow Astartes. Sigismund answered, stating that he would never do over an occasion so minor as an honour duel. Satisfied with his answer, Ferrus Manus ordered Thos to yield. This event made Dorn view Ferrus Manus as a brutal, but efficient and honourable leader, one worthy of respect.

On the world of Gyros-Thravian, the Imperial Fists, alongside the Death Guard and Luna Wolves, battled against one of the mightiest Ork Warbosses to ever plague the galaxy: Gharkul Blackfang. Despite the might of three powerful legions, the Astartes could not hold against the hordes of Greenskins. Rogal Dorn fought them with extreme prejudice and hatred due to their similarity to the Beastmen that devastated his empire. Rogal Dorn and Mortarion were prepared to launch a final assault, one that would kill Blackfang and bring low his Waaagh!, when the Emperor himself arrived to aid his sons. At the helm of a thousand of His Custodian Guards, the Master Of Mankind assaulted the Ork Horde's heart. The Master Of Mankind slew Blackfang atop his Gargant, whilst the thousand Custodians decimated the Orks, killing over a hundred times their number at the cost of three of their own. Whilst the Greenskins had been destroyed in their entirety, Dorn felt bitter at the Emperor stealing his chance to kill Blackfang. This bitterness would later contribute to Dorn's rejection of the Imperium.

In the campaign known as the World Prince Campaign, Rogal Dorn commanded the assault on a Hive World, whose name has been lost, and its monarch, known as the World Prince. The World Prince refused to submit to the Imperium, and those loyal to the World Prince stubbornly gave their lives in defence of their monarch. Hive after hive fell to the onslaughts of the Imperial Fists, and it was evident that, despite the slow progress, the world would inevitably fall. However, the plans of the Imperial Fists would be thwarted by a number of schemes and operations initiated by a mysterious organisation. Confused, the Imperial Fists and Rogal Dorn attempted to decipher what this organisation was, who it may consist, and what its goals maybe. To their surprise, the operatives revealed themselves to be members of the Alpha Legion. Alpharius himself contacted Rogal Dorn, and stated that he was his ally and was assisting him in the campaign. Not once was an Alpha Legionnaire seen, but the XX Legion's influence was evident. Coups and insurrections erupted across the remaining Hives, and the forces of the World Prince failed to maintain organisation as they fought on all fronts. Eventually, the majority of the Hive World's nobility, including the entire family of the World Prince, were assassinated over the course of a night, by human operatives of the Alpha Legion. Broken and despairing, the World Prince collapsed before Rogal Dorn and gave up his planet. After the conflict, Rogal Dorn approached and confronted Alpharius, and the two primarchs bandied words over their vastly different styles of war. Before the argument could escalate, Alpharius and Dorn withdrew from the planet, returning to their legions and pursuing their next war.

A mere few months later, the Imperial Fists joined forces with the Night Lords and Blood Angels in the Cheraut System. Their foe's strength rivalled that of multiple Astarte Legions and in the end, it took warriors from five legions to quell the human empire that resided there. These five legions were the Imperial Fists, Night Lords, Blood Angels, World Eaters and Thousand Sons. At the dusk of this campaign, Dorn received news of the Master Of Mankind's choice for Praetorian Of Terra: Perturabo. The news enraged Dorn, who believed himself the superior siege master. Rogal Dorn went on a rampage, lashing out and attacking those around him. Amongst those attacked was Konrad Curze, Primarch Of The Night Lords. Konrad Curze's speed and agility enabled him to outmanoeuvre Rogal Dorn and incapacitate him. The Primarch of the VIII Legion sensed the blight upon Dorn's mind, and returned him to Inwit in an attempt to heal Dorn's wounds, both mental and physical. Even ten millennia later, Rogal Dorn bears no ill will against the now lost Konrad Curze. Dorn recognised his mistakes, and that his brother had done what any brother should've.

The Heresy

After his moment of insanity on Cheraut, Dorn awoke aboard the Phalanx, orbiting his homeworld of Inwit. Imperial Fist apothecaries attempted to scan the primarch's brain and perform an operation, yet Rogal Dorn paused this upon receiving news of Ferrus Manus' arrival. The two primarchs conversed aboard the Phalanx, discussing the many theatres of war and various battle doctrines. The Warmaster manipulated Dorn into confessing his emotions to him. Rogal Dorn admitted that he resented the Emperor for his lack of acknowledgement and bore no true loyalty to the Master Of Mankind. In that moment, Ferrus Manus discovered another ally. In his moment of vulnerability, Ferrus Manus was able to assure Dorn of his tactical brilliance. He promised the Imperial Fists great opportunities, if they would just pledge their allegiance to the Warmaster. After many days of pondering, Dorn knelt and pledged his legion to Ferrus Manus' cause.

When Perturabo and Horus learned of the atrocities on Isstvan III, the Lord Of Iron and Lupercal contacted seven legions, one of which was the Imperial Fists. The VII Legion answered the call, and prepared to journey to the Isstvan System to assault the world of Isstvan V. However, Perturabo elected to contact Rogal Dorn in person, in an attempt to mend their relationship. Despite knowing what would occur on Isstvan V, Dorn responded amicably, and the Lord Of Iron and the Lord Of Stone engaged in deep conversation about war, their legions, and the future to come. Amidst this conversation, Perturabo informed Rogal Dorn of his belief that Rogal Dorn was more deserving of the title Praetorian. Throughout the Heresy, this would haunt Dorn, making him doubt and yearn for a future where the pair could build Mankind's Realm together. Yet Dorn had pledged his loyalty, and that bond could not be broken.

Travelling to Isstvan V, the Imperial Fists agreed to consist of the second wave alongside the Blood Angels, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion. As the Emperor's Children, World Eaters and Death Guard butchered the traitors, the Imperial Fists prepared their weapons to cull the loyalists. From their golden fleet in orbit, the VII Legion assisted the IX Legion in commanding the second wave. The yellow drop pods crashed onto the barren and dusty surface of Isstvan, and the Imperial Fists emerged alongside their allies, poised to attack. Mortarion contacted Rogal Dorn, and thanked the arrival of one of his few friends. Rogal Dorn remained silent, brooding, which concerned Mortarion. Inadvertently, Mortarion had been informed of the betrayal, and ordered his legion to remain vigilant due to the queer behaviour of the reinforcements. As commander of the second wave, it was Dorn's orders that would trigger the culling. In his last moment of honour, Dorn apologised to Mortarion, before giving the order to open fire after a flare was shot by Ferrus Manus. The Imperial Fists and Word Bearers, holding the centre of the reinforcements, fired upon the Death Guard, and their salvos cut down thousands of the XIV Legion, though many would survive thanks to Mortarion's previous order. With orders from Angron to retreat by any means necessary, the World Eaters threw themselves at the Imperial Fists, butchering the yellow legionnaires. Dorn led a counter attack to repel the World Eaters, but Angron ambushed him, burying Gorefather in Dorn's shoulder whilst raising Gorechild to decapitate him. Dorn responded by raising his arm, taking Gorechild's revving teeth to his gauntlet. Immediately taking the opportunity, Dorn headbutted Angron, stunning the Red Angel before swinging Storm's Teeth in a great arc. Angron proceeded to lunge himself at Dorn, bringing the Imperial Fists' Primarch to the ground. Angron hammered his already bloody fists into Dorn's face, shattering many bones and disfiguring the primarch. In response, the Gal Vorbak of the Word Bearers Legion swarmed Angron, forcing him to retreat. On the field of battle, Sigismund carved a bloody path through the loyalists, killing key commanders such as Ignatius Grulgor of the Death Guard and Dreagher of the World Eaters. Sigismund's next opponent revealed himself to be Nathaniel Garro of the Death Guard, who swung Libertas at the Imperial Fist. Sigismund parried the blow, launching his own in response. The two duellists battled for many minutes, yet it was clear that Sigismund was the superior swordsman. Nathaniel Garro's death was only prevented by the intervention of Khârn. Together, Khârn and Garro proved too much for the First Captain of the Imperial Fists, and Sigismund fled. The Imperial Fists, thanks to their mastery of fortification and defence, were able to encircle the loyalists, trapping the three legions within a depression. However, more assaults from the World Eaters succeeded in breaking open the VII Legion's defences, allowing the World Eaters to escape and board their ships.

Once the Dropsite Massacre had finally ended and the loyalist legions seemingly crippled, the Imperial Fists awaited their next orders, whilst Rogal Dorn was dispatched to the traitor Emperor's Children Apothecary, Fabius Bile. Bile healed the wounds sustained by Angron during the Dropsite Massacre, but secretly tampered with Dorn's physiology. Through a combination of chemicals and psychic aid from the twisted Raven Guard Librarian, Balsar Kurthuri, Fabius Bile was able to induce fits of rage in Dorn, slowly forcing the loss of his sanity and forcing him into the arms of the Chaos Gods. Upon awakening, Dorn realised his condition and attempted to slay Fabius Bile, and would have succeeded if not for the intervention of Ferrus Manus. The Primarch Of The Iron Hands reasoned that, once the war had ended, Bile would be judged. Yet for now, his skills in genecraft were required to further the war effort. Dorn saw through the Warmaster's facade, and knew refusal would mean death. Reluctantly, Dorn agreed, before dutifully carrying out his orders to ambush the Iron Warriors at Phall.

A detachment of Iron Warriors had been dispatched by Perturabo to assist the loyalists at Isstvan V, but thanks to the twisted sorcery of the Blood Angels and Raven Guard, they had encountered unrelenting warp storms, forcing them to resupply in the Phall System. Three weeks after the Iron Warriors were forced into the Phall System, Dorn launched his attack at the head of an enormous fleet of Imperial Fists. Leading from his Gloriana-class Battleship, the Eternal Crusader, Dorn oversaw the destruction of a large portion of the Iron Warriors, before the commanding Warsmith managed to reorganise his troops into a formidable defence. Over the course of two years, the Imperial Fists launched attack after attack against the Iron Warriors' lines, and every time they were repulsed. Rogal Dorn and the high command of the Imperial Fists believed First Warsmith Kydomor Forrix had control of the Iron Warriors, and the primarch believed he could goad the bitter and aggressive Iron Warrior into making a fatal mistake. The Imperial Fists were entirely unprepared for the level-headed and cautious mind of Warsmith Barabas Dantioch. Approximately a year since the Battle Of Phall's onset, Dorn was astounded when he discovered a force of Iron Warriors aboard the Eternal Crusader. These Iron Warriors butchered their way through Dorn's elite honour guard, the Huscarls, and came dangerously close to slaying Rogal Dorn after he received numerous bolter rounds to the torso. Unfortunately for the IV Legion, Dorn proved himself as too strong a foe, and the boarding force was torn to shreds by Storm's Teeth. After two years, the Iron Warriors began to inexplicably withdraw from the system, separating their fleet into three. The Imperial Fists took this opportunity to open fire and cull as many loyalists as possible, and they directed their fire on the fleet led by Barabas Dantioch. Dantioch's men were killed in swathes, though the Iron Warriors successfully escaped the clutches of the VII Legion.

Approximately halfway through the Battle Of Phall, Rogal Dorn assigned his second, Sigismund, to pursuing the Hunters' Legion: the White Scars. Assisted by elements of the Alpha Legion, the Imperial Fists haunted the White Scars after ambushing them off of the planet of Prospero. On the world of Aghoru, Sigismund engaged a force of Thousand Sons defending a Shard Of Magnus, massacring the warriors of the XV Legion before the arrival of the White Scars. The V Legion battled Sigismund's forces, and Sigismund himself almost slew the renowned White Scar Jubal Khan, though the White Scar successfully evaded death once more. Sigismund continued to hunt the White Scars, and the loyalists led him to the moon of Apollonia. Wary of the Alpha Legion, Sigismund assigned them to the initial assault, with the goal of infiltrating the Athenaeum Of Kallimakus. When no word came from the Alpha Legionnaires, Sigismund declared them turncloaks, and opened fire on the Alpha Legion fleet. The XX Legion responded, opening fire in turn and dealing much damage to the Imperial Fists. The ensuing anarchy presented the White Scars' with the chance to flee intact, which they duly took.

The Saviour Of Sotha

Half a decade prior to the outbreak of the Heresy, Alexis Polux engaged in a fierce argument with his primarch over the primarch's apathy to civilian populations. As a result, Rogal Dorn disowned Alexis Polux, and sent he and the 405th Company into exile. Now without a legion, Alexis Polux led his company to the Realm Of The Ultramarines: Ultramar. The Imperial Fists were welcomed with open arms by their kin of the XIII Legion. The 405th Company quickly earnt a positive reputation, aiding the Ultramarines in developing and maintaining the infrastructure of Ultramar. During this time, Alexis Polux took interest in a unique xenos device on the planet of Sotha, though he would be unable to experiment with it due to Roboute Guilliman's concern of its potential effects.

At the outbreak of the Heresy, Alexis Polux was unaware of the chaos until the aftermath of the Battle Of Calth, when Word Bearer survivors and an Imperial Fist contingent demanded that Polux aid them in resupplying and taking the war to Macragge. Alexis Polux relented, allowing the traitors access to the surface of Sotha. However, Polux took command of his void fleet and ordered his ships to open fire on the traitors' fleet. Every ship bearing the iconography of the Word Bearers burnt in the righteous weaponry of the 405th Company. The traitors on the surface immediately noticed they had been betrayed, and attacked the Imperial Fists stationed on Sotha. Thanks to Polux's genius, the 405th Company were able to encircle the Word Bearers and Imperial Fists, keeping them suppressed as the fleet in orbit opened fire on the traitors, massacring them to the man. Determined to prevent the Pharos Device, as the xenos device became known, from falling into enemy hands, Polux instructed his company to remain in the defence of Sotha, whilst he attempted to contact the primarch Guilliman. Eventually, contact with Macragge was established, and Guilliman ordered Alexis Polux to activate the device. The device instantly became a beacon in the warp, similar to the Terran Astronomican. As a result, the 405th Company were able to easily arrive to Macragge, in time for the formation of Imperium Secundus.

Amongst forces of Emperor's Children, Iron Warriors, World Eaters, Luna Wolves, Thousand Sons and Death Guard, the 405th Company of the Imperial Fists were present for the debate between Guilliman, Mortarion and Curze about the status of Terra and the Imperium. Fearing the worst, the triumvirate agreed on the formation of a successor to the Imperium: Imperium Secundus. Guilliman attempted to pass the mantle of Imperial Regent to his comrades, but Mortarion refused due to his lack of charisma, whilst Curze refused due to his critical and unsparing nature. Alexis Polux was the first to propose the coronation of Guilliman as Imperial Regent, and all save Guilliman himself agreed. The Primarch of the Ultramarines relented, and was crowned by Konrad Curze as Imperial Regent. One of Guilliman's first orders, thanks to the advice of Motartion, was to assign Barabas Dantioch's Iron Warrios and Alexis Polux's Imperial Fists to inspecting and analysing the Pharos Device, the very object keeping half the galaxy in the Imperium's hands. At first, Alexis Polux regarded Dantioch with contempt, a result of their legion's animosity. Yet as the weeks passed, they began to bond over their shared intellect, morals and skill. Within two months, the pair had forged the closest bonds between Astartes known, an example of the camaraderie that could've been shared between their primarchs if not for their mutual loathing.

Unbeknownst to the loyalists, a fleet consisting of Raven Guard and Dark Angels mustered by Nurgle's Primarch, Corvus Corax, had discovered the Pharos Device, and prepared an assault. The Raven Guards' mastery of stealth allowed the traitors to travel to Sotha whilst avoiding detection by the Ultramarines' defences. The loyalists were entirely unprepared when, from seemingly nowhere, a sizeable portion of the I and XIX Legions bombarded the planet, sending its defences into disarray. Dantioch's technological knowledge allowed the Iron Warrior to reactivate the anti-air weaponry, as Alexis Polux prepared the ground force to counter an assault. As the traitors landed on Sotha's surface, the Imperial Fists and Iron Warriors unleashed hellfire, massacring the initial wave of Dark Angels and forcing them to retreat and regroup. Despite Polux's and Dantioch's extraordinary and ingenious strategy, the Raven Guard took advantage of a potential flaw in the defences, killing many loyalists. As a result, the loyalists had to abandon their fortifications and prepare for the next onslaught. Yet just as a traitor breakthrough seemed inevitable, the Nightfall, flagship of the Night Lords Legion, appeared above Sotha. Then came the rest of the VIII Legion, assisted by aspects of the XIV Legion, the Death Guard. This sudden reinforcement meant the traitors were required to withdraw to their fleet in orbit. Corvus Corax was well aware of the capabilities of the Pharos Device, and intended to utilise it to teleport his legion back into orbit. The Raven Guard launched another attack, puncturing the Imperial Fists' line and encroaching on the Device. The Ravenlord was mere metres away from the Device when Polux sprang into action, opening fire on the primarch with a heavy bolter before lunging at him, power fists ready. As Corvus Corax ducked and weaved through very darkness, Polux sustained numerous injuries, but did not fail in delivering wounds of his own. More than once, Polux's fist connected with Corax, stunning the primarch through the sheer force of the blows. Corvus Corax avoided another punch, before burying his twin lightning claws in the armour of Polux, dealing a fatal blow. In that same moment, Corvus Corax evaporated, transforming into mist. Dantioch had succeeded in teleporting Corax into the cells of the Nightfall, leaving the Raven Guard to die.

But victory comes at a cost. Alexis Polux was bleeding from a number of wounds, wounds that would not heal. The Imperial Fist collapsed to the ground, comforted by his brother-in-arms, Barabas Dantioch. Dantioch refused to let go of hope, calling for an Apothecary whilst pleading with Polux to live. The Imperial Fist merely smiled, and thanked the Iron Warrior for his friendship. With his final breath, Alexis Polux saluted the Emperor Of Mankind, before submitting to his injuries. Polux's death devastated the Warsmith, and he refused to abandon his fallen friend's side, brooding by his corpse until many hours after the battle had ceased. Konrad Curze himself had to descend to the planet's surface to convince Dantioch to leave his body. He finally gave in, allowing the primarch to take the Imperial Fist's body for a hero's funeral. On the pinnacle of Mount Pharos, the Ultramarines, Night Lords, Iron Warriors and remnants of the 405th Company prepared a pyre, which Konrad Curze lay the body of Polux on. Saluting his brother one last time, Dantioch ignited the pyre, watching as the smoke rose. Konrad Curze comforted Dantioch, naming him Warden Of Sotha and posthumously naming Polux a Hero Of The Imperium. In the aftermath of the battle, the last survivors of 405th Company were merged with the Iron Warriors of Barabas Dantioch to form the predecessor to the modern-day Wardens Of Sotha.

The Triumph

With Phall proving the Imperial Fists as inferior to the Iron Warriors, Rogal Dorn harboured an intense desire to atone for his mistakes. This desire resulted in Dorn resorting to the item known as the Pain Glove to give him clarity. The origins of the Pain Glove is not known, though the version utilised by the modern legion is a nerve-stimulating second skin, increasing pain whilst preventing the user from fainting. It is believed that the Pain Glove was a xenos device, related in some way to the Ruinous Powers of Chaos. This corruption was evident, as it began to seep into the primarch. Whereas the Rogal Dorn of the early Heresy despised Chaos and rejected it, the Rogal Dorn of the late Heresy consorted with the Neverborn, encouraging the usage of Chaos as a weapon. The resulting effects of the Pain Glove became ever clearer amidst Ferrus Manus' reenactment of the Triumph Of Ullanor.

During the Triumph, the Imperial Fists were akin to the Dark Angels; disgusted at how far their fellow legions had fallen into degeneracy and corruption. Rogal Dorn particularly viewed Leman Russ and Corvus Corax with contempt, Russ for his sadism, Corax for his repulsive daemonic physiology. Along with every other traitor primarch, Rogal Dorn was present for Ferrus Manus' infamous call for the Imperium's destruction. Privately, Ferrus Manus enlightened Rogal Dorn on the approaching White Scars and Thousand Sons, and gave the task of defending the traitors' rear to the Primarch of the Imperial Fists. Whilst frustrated at being refused the opportunity to besiege Terra, Dorn was pleased with his role and the opportunity to confront Jaghatai Khan. Yet the Imperial Fists were still present for the Siege Of Terra, as Sigismund was instructed by his genefather to assist the traitors. For his mission, Dorn selected the forgeworld of Beta-Garmon II as his seat, and the Imperial Fists immediately set off on their task of fortifying the local star cluster. As the traitors advanced on Terra, the VII Legion gave their lives in securing the lives of their kin.

The Duellist Deposed

Commanded by the respectable First Captain Sigismund, who had rejected submitting to Chaos yet approved of its use as a weapon, the Imperial Fist detachment travelled alongside the other legions, forming warrior bonds with fellow legendary swordsmen. Amidst these ranks lay such names as Artellus Numeon of the Salamanders, Raldoron and Nassir Amit of the Blood Angels, and Autek Mor of the Iron Hands. Upon the traitors' arrival to Terra, Sigismund attempted to secure his warriors as some of the first to land on Terra, and he succeeded. Ferrus Manus conceded, permitting the Imperial Fists to support the Salamanders in the first attack. Throughout the course of the Siege, Sigismund duelled and slew numerous loyalist champions, earning him a reputation as the greatest Astartes swordsman alive. But Sigismund would meet his match during the final traitor push on the Imperial Palace. As the Imperial Fist led his legionaries in the assault, they were set upon by warriors of the Night Lords Legion, in midnight clad. Sigismund emerged as the sole survivor, having killed many Night Lords. Then, through the dust, another figure emerged, revving an infamous chainglave. Jago Sevatarion, Emperor's Champion, had come. Sigismund prepared to duel, whilst the Prince Of Crows taunted him, mocking him. Eventually, the infuriated Sigismund fell to the taunts, lunging at Sevatar and engaging in the greatest duel in the history of Mankind. The pair battled across the Palace's outskirts, clashing for hours as Russ began his retreat and Ferrus Manus launched his last, desperate attack. In a mirror of their previous duel many years prior, Sevatar headbutted Sigismund, who was prepared. The Imperial Fist sidestepped, and attempted a wide, arcing blow with his blade, only for Sevatar to evade the blade with a speed impossible for an Astartes. Sevatar appeared behind Sigismund, impaling the Imperial Fist on his chainglaive, ending his life. To many, Sigismund died that day, but the Chaos Gods refused him rest. After the duel, the few remaining Imperial Fists collected their Captain and brought him aboard his personal ship, Abhorrence. In the same manner as his primarch, the Ruinous Powers revived him, imbuing him with a supernatural increase in power.

The Bane Of Beta-Garmon

Under Dorn's rule, the Beta-Garmon cluster developed into one of the most highly defended regions of space. Grand fortresses were scattered across the majority of worlds, whilst the Imperial Fists combed and patrolled their new domain, awaiting the arrival of the V and XV Legions. The civilian populace, despite being pleased with their security and high level of infrastructure, despised the tyranny and strictness of Dorn, and many revolts arose. Each one was mercilessly put down at the hands of Dorn's new second: Fafnir Rann, nicknamed the Executioner. As the Imperial Fists received reports that their outer fortress-worlds fell to the unstoppable onslaught of the White Scars, more and more uprisings sprung up from the dissatisfied populace, diverting the Imperial Fists' attention from the greatest threat.

Dorn's plot remained simple: fend off the White Scars and Thousand Sons until the Siege Of Terra had ended. Victory was not required, but forcing the loyalists to waste Astartes attacking Beta-Garmon for even a few months could prove disastrous for the loyalists. Aided by a large number of Imperial Army, the White Scars crashed against the Imperial Fists' lines, killing many yet the battle bore no results. Over the weeks, the White Scars and Thousand Sons probed the VII Legion's fortifications for potential flaws, yielding few results. As the loyalists halted their attack, the Imperial Fists were reinforced by units from the Salamanders and Iron Hands, strengthening their position whilst threatening the loyalists with defeat. Unbeknownst to all, the Crimson King, Magnus the Red, had discovered a minuscule flaw in the defences, one that the Primarch planned to exploit. Taking the Imperial Fists at unawares, Magnus and the Thousand Sons channeled their psychic nature into a ritual, firing a great bolt of lightning at the flaw in the defences. The wall, extending many miles, exploded, killing hundreds, if not thousands, of the VII Legion. A breach formed, the White Scars rallied and launched a jetbike charge into the heart of the fortress, cutting down traitors of the Imperial Army with ease and forcing Rogal Dorn and his Astartes to the next line of defences. The White Scars' specialty in shock warfare and fast assaults prevented the Imperial Fists from reforming their lines: the V Legion manifested as a white tide, consuming all in its path. Eventually, the Huscarls escorted Rogal Dorn to his palace, supported by the last quarter of the legion. The Keshig of the White Scars pierced the palace's defences, assaulting the Huscarls with their unique power weapons. Through strength and skill, the two honour guard stalemated and engaged in ferocious duels, whilst Dorn's cold eyes came to clash with eyes similar to his own: Jaghatai Khan's.

For a moment, the Khan seemed to attempt to reason with his forsaken brother, though Dorn refused him the opportunity. Storm's Teeth in hand, Dorn lunged at the Khan, swinging his chainsword in feral movements and forcing the Khan into the defensive. This unbridled ferocity was planned, as Dorn recognised that, should the Khan be allowed the opportunity to go on the offensive, Dorn's defence would be incapable from preventing the Khan's swift and blinding blows. With the Khan in the defensive, Dorn was allowed to utilise his superior strength, hammering away at his brother's defence. The two Primarchs clashed blades across the entirety of Dorn's throne room, before Dorn barrelled through a nearby wall and the duel continued on the palace's ancient ramparts. The Khan's talwar gave him greater mobility, allowing the Khan to avoid Dorn's blows. As they battled across the ramparts, Astartes from all three legions present attempted to intervene. Imperial Fists threw themselves at Jaghatai Khan, only to be carved up by his runic blade. White Scars and Thousand Sons assaulted Dorn, only to be turned to mist by his mountain-shattering punches. Amongst these warriors, Archamus of the Imperial Fists dealt the most damage. Using his seax, Archamus plunged the short blade into the Khan's shoulder, momentarily stunning the Primarch before Archamus was flung off the battlements to his death. The turning point of the duel occurred when Targutai Yesugei, Chief Stormseer Of The White Scars, focussed his immense psychic powers into Jaghatai Khan, empowering his Primarch, whilst sapping the very soul of Dorn. With a laugh dripping with spite and condescension, Storm's Teeth cleaved through Yesugei's warplate, tearing the White Scar in half and killing him instantly. The death of his mentor drove Jaghatai Khan into a state of unrestrained wrath, in the likes of Vulkan and Angron. This sudden display of ferocity took Dorn by surprise, and the Khan's blindingly fast reactions and strikes prevented Dorn from responding. Within seconds, Jaghatai Khan's blade had torn through Dorn's armour hundreds of time, ripping through flesh, muscle and tendons with ease. The Primarch Of The Imperial Fists felt a sudden surge of pain flaring up his arm, from a hand that had been separated from his body. His auramite gauntleted hand lay on the ramparts in a pool of Dorn's ichor. Dorn could only look up before the Khan's talwar pierced his chestplate, puncturing many vital organs such as his lungs and hearts, before emerging from his spine. With a final snarl, the Khan withdrew his sword, before colliding his foot with Dorn's chest, sending him over the battlements and onto the ashen rocks below. Whilst Dorn was a Primarch, the height of humanity's potential, his physiology was still mortal. Blood poured from every wound of his body, draining him of the liquid whilst his fall had broken numerous bones. Dying, Rogal Dorn resorted to a life of servitude. He raised his hand to the heavens above, and promised the Ruinous Powers to serve them for all eternity. Pleased that the war had brought one as proud as Dorn so low, the Chaos Gods elevated him to their Champion: a Daemon Prince Of Chaos Undivided. Through sorcery of the warp, Dorn was teleported to the remains of his homeworld of Inwit whilst the few survivors of his legion withdrew from Beta-Garmin back to their ancestral home.

A Great Scouring

As Sigismund and his Imperial Fists fled in a chaotic retreat from Terra, Rogal Dorn employed his librarians, now devoted Sorcerers of Chaos, to remake Inwit. Destroyed by Horus Lupercal as the Siege Of Terra was well underway, the Sorcerers of the Imperial Fists pieced together the frozen shards of Inwit, slowly reconstructing the dead world. During this time, they were attacked twice by Imperial forces. The first time, the Imperial Fists were set upon by a World Eater fleet, which they swiftly destroyed. Yet the second time, an even greater loyalist fleet, consisting of World Eaters and Ultramarines, assaulted the Imperial Fist fleet surrounding Inwit's core. At the head of this loyalist armada: Roboute Guilliman. The Primarch Of The Ultramarines had expected an uncorrupted Imperial Fists Legion, and was unprepared for the VII Legion to wield the fabrics of the dark warp against them. Whilst Guilliman possessed contingency plans, they proved to be poorly constructed due to lack of intelligence of the enemy's tactics. The Imperial Fists fought bravely against the XII and XIII Legions, and eventually the Chaos-empowered Astartes succeeded in repelling assault after assault. Dorn, now a horned and scaled Daemon Prince, chose to lead the counterattack, striking the Ultramarines on one of Inwit's many shards. There, he crossed blades with his brother Guilliman. At first, the duel seemed relatively even, though it soon became obvious that Dorn was the superior combatant. His chainsword broke through Guilliman's ceramite armour, forcing the Lord Of Ultramar on the backfoot. Wielding a Nurgle-corrupted dagger, Dorn slashed the dagger across Guilliman's throat, and the blade's deadly poisons began to seep into his blood. Only the quick thinking of Aeonid Thiel saved Guilliman from death, as the Ultramarine locked his Primarch in a stasis field to be extracted. Seeing that his legion had won the battle, Rogal Dorn ordered his legion to withdraw back to Inwit's core, allowing the loyalists to flee. With the loyalists scattered after Dorn's victory and Guilliman's fatal wounding, the Imperial Fists succeeded in their goal. Inwit had been pieced together, returning to the frozen waste it once was. However, the use of sorcery had twisted the planet beyond belief, leaving cracks in the very fabric of reality wherever the world drifted. In order to secure a new empire, Rogal Dorn moved the planet to the Maelstrom, a warp storm second only to the Eye Of Terror, where they would remain hidden for the remainder of the Great Scouring. There, Rogal Dorn reencountered his favoured son, Sigismund.

In the aftermath of the Siege Of Terra, Sigismund formed a most zealous and bigoted warband named the Black Templars, devoted in their entirety to the Dark Pantheon. As a reward for his allegiance, Sigismund was gifted the Black Sword, a daemonic sword with a blade as dark as night, with fiery runes carved into it. Sigismund pledged his loyalty to his genefather, taking up his role as Dorn's Hand. This favouritism enraged Fafnir Rann, who was blessed by Khorne and led his own warband known as the Executioners. To settle their dispute, Sigismund and Fafnir Rann duelled eachother on the Phalanx, which would evolve into an event known as the Feast Of Blades. Sigismund and Rann battled for near a day, the Black Sword clashing against Rann's twin chainaxes. Sigismund proved himself the superior combatant when he overpowered Rann, but left the Executioner alive due to the respect he bore for Fafnir Rann. Since then, the warbands of the Imperial Fists gather aboard the Phalanx every century, selecting a champion from their ranks who would duel for Rogal Dorn's favour.

Cursed By Laughter

From their time in the Great Crusade together, Sigismund bore huge respect for the new Warmaster Of Chaos, Gabriel Santar. As such, when Santar called upon any sworn to Chaos to join the ranks of his Black Legion for the First Black Crusade, Sigismund accepted. The Black Templars fought fiercely, capturing world after world and earning Sigismund the epithet "Worldclaimer". The Black Templars continued their onslaught across the regions surrounding the Eye Of Terror, before they amassed for the final attack on Cadia. Before the battle, Santar and Sigismund agreed upon a strategy. The Black Templars would distract the White Scars, whilst the Black Legion focussed on their objective.

The day came, and Cadia was reduced to anarchy. The Cadian Guardsmen fought with a ferocity expected in an Astartes, not a mere man. Dozens of traitors fell to the lasfire of the Guard, though their attack never faltered for even a moment. Sigismund himself butchered his way through the Guard, eventually catching the attention of the White Scars. Sigismund withdrew as the White Scars charged, crashing into the ranks of the Black Templars. Both sides displayed incredible martial prowess, duelling with extraordinary speed and strength. Sigismund slew a dozen White Scars that day, cleaving through them with his blade. Eventually, both sides had been reduced to one combatant. For the Black Templars, this was Sigismund. For the White Scars, it was Jubal Khan, Sigismund's ancient friend. Without hesitation, the two clashed, Jubal Khan's power glaive colliding with the Black Sword. To all who could see, the duel was impossible to follow, their speed was that of gods. Half a day of endless battle passed before a significant move was made: Sigismund plunged the Black Sword into Jubal Khan, puncturing both hearts. Exhausted, Sigismund dropped his guard, allowing the dying Jubal Khan to stab Sigismund with his power glaive. Then, to the surprise of Sigismund, the aged Jubal Khan began to laugh maniacally. It dawned on Sigismund that the Khan did not fear death, he welcomed it. He wanted it. The last few breaths escaped Jubal Khan's lips, before Sigismund and the Black Templars withdrew from Cadia. Since that fateful day, he has enclosed himself on the Eternal Crusader, refusing to emerge even for raids and the Feast Of Blades. It is rumoured that the laugh of Jubal Khan haunts him, even ten millennia later.

Every few centuries, the Imperial Fists seek the technological genius of Fabius Bile, who resides on the planet of Paramar. This interest in the former Emperor's Children brings them into conflict with Lion El'Jonson's Dark Angels, who too wish to obtain Fabius Bile's technology. The two legions' rivalry began in late M32, at the outbreak of the First Paramarian War, where the Imperial Fists were forced to retreat and Lion El'Jonson took control of Fabius Bile's resources. After a millennia of subservience, Fabius Bile funded a second war, and the Imperial Fists attacked the Dark Angels, driving them off world and into the Ghoul Stars. M35, the Dark Angels return from their crusade in the Ghoul Stars to besiege Paramar once more, though this invasion would fail. A century later, Fabius Bile detonates numerous explosives across Paramar in coordination with the Dark Angels, allowing the I Legion to crush any Imperial Fists remaining in the Fourth Paramarian War. There would be peace for the next 3 millennia, before Rogal Dorn bombarded the Rock with the Phalanx's weaponry, severely damaging to the Dark Angels' fortress-monastery. On the surface of Paramar, Dorn clashed with the Lion. The Lion was the superior warrior, and Rogal Dorn was banished after being impaled on the Lion's sword.

The 41st Millenium

Currently, the Imperial Fists are blockading Paramar, launching bombardment after bombardment as they prepare to land on the surface. The Dark Angels are unable to penetrate their fleet, trapping a large portion of the I Legion on the planet. Fafnir Rann himself oversees the siege, though his impatience has led to many casualties on the side of the VII Legion.

With the return of Horus Lupercal, the Imperial Fists have increased the rate of their raids and incursions, seeking to cause as much havoc as possible to prevent the resurgence of the Imperium. Rogal Dorn views Horus as the greatest threat to the influence of Chaos, and seeks to cripple the Imperium. His target: the world of Chogoris. Partially fuelled by his hatred of the White Scars, Rogal Dorn believes that, should he succeed in annihilating a Chapter of the First Founding, shockwaves of fear would be sent through the Imperium, and the Master Of Mankind's realm would begin to unravel. Joined by Sigismund Worldclaimer and Fafnir Rann the Executioner, word has spread that the might of the Imperial Fists Legion, strengthened by daemons of every deity, have set off to extinguish the line of Chogoris.

Homeworld

Inwit is an Ice World, a barren and frigid world that is worth little. The planet possesses few natural resources, and the fauna threatens the natives. Rogal Dorn's barbaric side is an imprint of Inwit, as its inhabitants are savage, fixated purely on survival. During the Age Of Strife, Inwit was the capital of a minor interstellar empire, though the realm quickly collapsed. Under the Imperium, Inwit was the site of great shipyards, akin to Mars or Jupiter.

During the Ferrusian Heresy, the vengeance seeking Horus Lupercal destroyed the planet during his rush to Terra. The Luna Wolves overloaded the planet's core, shattering it and sending fragments across the local sector. After the Heresy, the Imperial Fists remade the planet, albeit smaller and with more Chaos corruption, and it has since been moved to the Maelstrom, where it remains a haven for all those who wish to under the banner of Dorn.

Organisation

Whilst they possess an affinity for close quarter and melee combat, the expertise of the Imperial Fists resides in siege warfare, specifically the defensive aspects. Once they have constructed a fortress, it is impenetrable to all but the greatest siege masters and those in possession of immense psychic potential.

The Imperial Fists, despite being sworn to Chaos, maintain a strict sense of organisation, arranging their Astartes into different units. They are in control of much artillery, particularly thunderfire cannons and Soul Grinders, both of which are manufactured by Vashtorr the Arkifane, whom Dorn is a close ally of.

A/N: And that's the Imperial Fists done. Apologies that this took so long to publish, but hopefully the amount of lore is satisfactory and good quality. The next chapter is on the Emperor's Judges, the Night Lords, but their chapter will take a while to come out as I am going to focus on adding more lore to the already published Index Astartes and tidying up the timeline. As always, reviews and criticisms are welcome.

Torgaddon out.
