Chapter 2: Piecing clues Together

Eddie stared at her hands in her lap and sighed. Jamie swore he could hear her stomach growl. There was a knock on the door and Jamie looked towards it.
"Come in."
Turning onto her side in the hospital bed, Eddie sighed again and tried to prevent the tears from coming to her eyes. She turned her head when the door opened but turned away just as fast when she saw Danny come into the room.
"Eddie, I am so sorry this happened to you. You have my word that I will find the woman who did this to you."
Eddie closed her eyes and started to sob quietly. Jamie ran a hand through her blond locks and kissed her left temple. Danny turned his attention to Jamie and continued his conversation.
"I know this may not be the best time but, I want to show you something. You might recognize the man in this surveillance video taken across the street from this bodega. You see Eddie lock her car, starts walking down the sidewalk heading West towards the precinct. Notice the guy skulking in the shadows wearing the black hoodie?"
Jamie nodded and quietly continued watching the surveillance video.
"Glen Sarson. I put him away four years ago."
Jamie let out a gasp when he saw Eddie. She was lying unconscious on the pavement in the pouring rain. He watched as a woman scooped a baby up in her arms. Danny spoke up.
"We're still trying to identify the woman that has your baby. Her face was partially obscured by a gray hoodie. We do know she has dark hair, and she has a slight limp when she walks. She may have recently given birth and lost her own baby."
Clearing his throat, Jamie nodded.
"Megan's alive. That's good news. She's going to need medical attention though. Let me go with you."
Danny put a hand on Jamie's shoulder.
"No. Stay with Eddie. She really needs you right now."
Jamie looked away and felt himself cringe inwardly. Danny then squeezed his shoulder.
"We'll get these two kid. We'll get your daughter back."
With that, Danny left the room and Jamie turned back to Eddie who was pretending to sleep, but he could clearly see she was crying despite having her eyes closed. Eddie whimpered for a moment and then opened her eyes.
"Jamie is hurts."
Wincing, Jamie nodded and pressed the call button on the remote on the bed.
"It's ok babe. I'll get the nurse for you. I know it hurts."
A nurse quickly came in and saw Eddie.
"Glad to see your awake Eddie. Let's get you something for the pain, ok? Give me just a second. Here we go. You should start feeling that right away."
Eddie took in a breath and let it out, nodding her head.
"Thank you. Feeling better already."
The nurse squeezed Eddie's hand and offered her a smile.
"Let me know if you need anything else ok Eddie?"
Eddie nodded and swallowed. The nurse left the room and Jamie looked Eddie in the eye.
"Do you want some water babe?"
Trying to reach for the plastic cup on the bedside tray, Jamie poured some water into it. Helping her sit up a little, Jamie placed the cup to her lips and she drank slowly. The last swallow of water she coughed on a bit.
"Easy Ed. Take a breath. Are you ok?"
Nodding once more, Eddie took in a breath and spoke quietly.
"I'm ok bub. Thanks. I can't stand this. I need to be out there canvassing every block of this city looking for Megan. We need to be out there. I will go to the edges of the city and beyond to find out baby girl Jamie. Are you coming with me or not?"
Jamie could see Eddie's stubborn streak showing itself. That and her her maternal instincts were kicking in. He took a breath in and let it out.
"Ed, listen to me. I know you want to go out there and find our baby girl, but you just had major surgery. You need time to heal. I want to find her just as badly as you do, but trust me on this, Danny is working on finding the man and woman responsible for assaulting you and taking our baby. We'll get her back babe."
Jamie leaned over the bed and did his best to pull her semi-into his arms while taking care to be gentle with her. Eddie felt the water works coming again and she felt like she was on a roller coaster.
"Why would someone take our baby from us bub?"
Jamie felt a lump in his throat, and it wouldn't go away no matter how much he swallowed.
"I don't know babe. There are some really bad people out there."
Eddie was feeling sleepy again.
"I just want her back bub."
Jamie felt the tears coming to his eyes again and he let them fall.
"I want her back too babe. We're going to get through this together. That's a promise. You should eat something. I'll get the nurse to bring you something to eat."
Eddie looked Jamie in the eye.
"I'm not hungry."
Blinking his eyes at Eddie he shook her head.
"Well, your stomach says different babe. Please eat something."
Eddie became quiet again. Jamie felt at a loss as to what do for her at this point in time, other than be there with her. This was his baby too that was missing. Part of him wanted to go out there and arrest those two perps himself, but the other half told him to let Danny handle it. But even he knew Danny couldn't get too close, he was still family.
