Jamie couldn't help but pace the waiting room hoping to get some information about the baby he and Fredericson found in the alleyway. He was hoping it was his baby girl. He stopped pacing when he heard Eddie's voice.
"Jamie! Is it her? Is it Megan?"
Jamie took Eddie into his arms and rocked her, then kissed her forehead.
"I don't know. The docs are checking her over and are going to give her bath and warm her up."
Eddie sunk into the hard plastic chairs and felt an invisible weight settle into her chest.
"It has to be her Jamie. I can't do this again. It's got to be Megan."
Jamie ran a hand through Eddie's blond locks of hair and then kissed her forehead one more time.
"Let me see if I can get an update again. I'll be right back. I'm not going anywhere, ok?"
Swallowing thickly, Eddie reluctantly grabbed for a magazine on the table next to her and busied herself with pretending to read. She discreetly kept an eye on him all the time though. Turning a page, she heard him speak to the charge nurse behind the desk.
"Excuse me ma'am? Sargeant Reagan again. Is there any way I could get an update on the baby that was brought in earlier tonight?"
As the charge nurse was about to answer a doctor came out from a pair of doors that were out of sight.
"Sargeant Reagan?"
Jamie turned and walked back towards the chair where he was standing. He held out a hand for Eddie and she took it, standing up.
"Yes. Do you have any news about the baby that was brought in earlier tonight?"
The doctor gestured towards the plastic chairs and sat down. The worried couple took a seat once more.
"Sargeant Reagan, I'm Doctor Rhodes. I was the one who has been treating the infant that was brought in earlier tonight. So, I know you asked me to get some DNA from the infant and you gave permission to compare them to the one's we already have on file for both you and your wife. Let's discuss this in a more private setting."
Jamie held Eddie's hand as they followed Doctor Rhodes into an empty exam room. Shutting the door behind him, Doctor Rhodes gestured for them to sit down as he pulled up some results on the computer in front him.
"I've reviewed the DNA test results we got back from the infant and compared to both of yours, and it's a match. That little girl upstairs in the NICU is your daughter."
Eddie felt tears come to her eyes.
"So, she's ok? Why is she in the NICU?"
Doctor Rhodes gave a serious look to the couple and shook his head.
"She has a mild case of hypothermia. We've got her in an open and heated basinet, and she's being given fluid to re hydrate her. She should be able to get out of here in a couple of days. The two of you can go and visit her if you'd like. Although, Sargeant Reagan, you'll have to leave your gun belt and your radio behind. I'll take you up to her now."
Jamie nodded and walked out to the waiting room and handed her utility belt and his radio to Fredericson.
"Good news Sarge?"
Jamie nodded and patted Fredericson's shoulder, handing him his radio and utility belt.
"Good news all around. That's my daughter we found. Can you hold that for me for a bit?"
Fredericson nodded and took a seat in the chairs again.
"Sure thing sarge."
Jamie took Eddie's hand and began following Doctor Rhodes once more towards the elevator. Once inside, Eddie shifted nervously on her feet.
"Doctor Rhodes, so she's really ok? Is she breathing on her own?"
Doctor Rhodes nodded his head and reassured Eddie as the elevator dinged and the doors opened up on the fourth floor.
"She's breathing on her own. She's being given intravenous fluids to re hydrate her, and she's staying warm in an open and heated bassinet."
This seemed to alleviate some of Eddie's worries and Jamie squeezed her hand as they reached the NICU. Jamie felt his breath catch in his throat as Doctor Rhodes led them inside. He continued his conversation with the couple and pointed towards the sink just ahead of them.
"There's a sink over there to wash up. Then Carolina and Jessica will get you the proper attire to put over your street clothes and your uniform."
Jamie and Eddie followed Doctor Rhodes instructions washing their hands and both nurses helped them into some yellow gowns, tying them up in the back. Jessica led the couple over a bassinet with a perfectly swaddled baby who sleeping peacefully. Jamie glanced down at the sticker on the bassinet.
"Baby girl Reagan."
Jessica quickly switched out the sticker 'baby girl Reagan', with a brand new one that read: Megan Reagan.
"There we go. Now that we know what her name is, we don't have to call her 'baby girl Reagan' anymore."
Carolina reached into the bassinet and scooped Megan into her arms, having Eddie take a seat in the rocking chair. Eddie raised her question.
"I'm breast feeding, would it be possible to feed her?"
Jamie sat down in a separate rocking chair and looked at Carolina.
"I don't see why not. Jessica will help the two of you get settled, so you can get to know one another."
Eddie felt a few tears come down her cheeks as Jessica helped her get situated and Megan began to nurse. Wincing, Eddie looked up at Jessica.
"Ah. I guess she knows what she's doing."
Jessica smiled and bid her farewell.
"I'll let you get to know her, and I'll be back soon."
Nodding, Eddie began to trace Megan's tiny nose as she enjoyed her meal. Jamie ran a finger over her dark hair that was peeking out from her receiving blanket. Eddie spoke to her softly.
"Hi sweetie. I'm your mommy. Eddie. This handsome guy next to me, is your daddy Jamie. We're so glad you're ok baby. I can't believe your 5 days old."
Jamie traced Megan's nose with his index finger.
"You're beautiful baby girl."
Megan cooed at Jamie as she flexed her tiny hand against Eddie's skin. Eddie let out a small giggle.
"I think she's going to be a daddy's girl."
Jamie smirked and ran a hand over her tiny head.
"Well, when she gets to be a teenager, the boys better watch out, they won't know what to expect."
Eddie gave him a look.
"Jamie, it'll be a very long time until then. Can't we just enjoy her when she's this little right now?"
Jamie nodded and placed a kiss to Megan's forehead.
"You're right. This baby girl is going to be very spoiled."
The couple burst into soft laughter.
"Yeah, by pop."
Megan let out a slight whimper and then went back to having her meal. Jamie had scooted his rocking chair next to Eddie's so he could be close to her and his baby girl. Placing his forehead against Eddie's, he sighed in contentment.
"I love you. The both of you."
Jamie was glad him and Fredericson had found Megan. But he knew things weren't over yet just because they'd found her.
