"Who are the flowers for?"
"Your Mom." Sam said and plopped down in one of the chairs.
"And I take it they're not from Tony?"
"Nope."
Jonathan sighed and went into the refrigerator and pulled out a pitcher of iced tea.
"Do you want any?"
"Yeah, thanks."
Jonathan grabbed two glasses out of the cupboard and poured them both a glass. They each took a few swallows both lost in thought.
"Sam?"
"Yeah?"
"What are we going to do if Mom and Andy get married?"
Sam shrugged. "I don't know. "
"You know we wouldn't be in this mess if your Dad.."
"If my Dad what? Come on, just say it!"
"Okay. If your Dad hadn't fooled around with another woman!" He glared at her.
Sam held her hand up. "WHOA dweeb! Don't be blaming me for all this! Do you think I'm any happier with him than you are?! I hate what he did!"
"You do?"
"Of course I do. Your mom is like a second mother to me and it pisses me off that my dad hurt her like he did."
"Really?"
Sam sighed. "Yes, really. He not only hurt her but our whole family."
"Yeah. It's just all these years they were getting closer and closer."
"I know. "
"So what happened? When we saw them kissing in Jamaica it seemed like things were finally moving. And they seemed so close. But then Tony sleeps with Kathleen and chooses her over my mom and our family."
Sam took a long swallow of her tea. "I wish I had an answer for you but I don't. The only thing I can think of is that my dad doesn't think he is good enough for your mom."
"Not good enough? Sam, he is the best guy I know. And yeah I am angry with him right now but I do consider him like a dad. Hell, he's been more like a dad than my actual dad."
Sam smiled sadly. "Yeah, I know. We were both lucky. I got Angela as a second mom and you got my dad as a second dad."
"Okay, but what if my Mom marries Andy and your dad marries Kathleen?!"
"I don't even want to think about it."
"But, it could happen. Unless we figure out some way to stop it."
Sam rolled her eyes. "Okay genius how exactly are you planning on doing that?"
Jonathan picked up his glass and took a long swallow. He set it down and leaned back in his chair.
'All right, come on! You are an intelligent person! There has to be some way to get your mom and Tony together!'
Suddenly it hit him. It was perfect.
A huge grin spread across his face.
"Okay, out with it! What is your plan?"
"I'll give you a little hint: Valentine's Day!"

"Okay Bub, what are you going to do about this?"
"Hello to you too Mona and what am I going to do about what?" He hung his jacket on the coat rack and put his books on the desk.
She walked over to him and shoved the card under his nose.
"THIS!"
"Mona, back up a little will ya? So what is this?"
She handed it to him. "Here, read it and weep."
Tony read the card and flinched.
"Oh."
"Oh? OH! That's all you can say is OH?!"
"Well what do you expect me to say?"
Mona threw her hands in the air. "Oh gee I don't know. Maybe; Oh no Mona I have to stop Angela from marrying Andy because I love her!"
Tony rolled his eyes and went over and sat down on the couch. She followed and sat down beside him.
"I can't believe you read the card. It wasn't addressed to you."
"Yeah, like that has ever stopped me. Look, save the right and wrong speech. If you don't want to lose Angela you have to get off your butt and fight for her!"
"Fight for her? Mona, in case you have forgotten I am involved with Kathleen."
"Yeah, don't remind me. But seriously Tony, this stupidity has gone on way too long."
"But, I thought you were okay with me dating Kathleen?"
"Why would you think that?"
"Well, when you found out that we had spent the night together you told me to be honest with myself and accept that I wanted the night to happen."
"Yeah, I did."
"Okay, so what's changed?"
"What's changed is that it was only supposed to be for that one night. And okay maybe a few dates afterwards. It wasn't supposed to turn into you getting seriously involved with her or Angela being proposed to!"
Tony shrugged. "Well that is what happened."
Mona gave him a long, hard look.
"So what's the plan then? You marry Kathleen. Angela marries Andy and the four of you live miserably ever after? Okay, Kathleen and Andy will be happy but it won't be genuine. They will be living a lie because their spouses are in love with other people. Is that fair to them?"
Tony gulped. "Well, I…'
"Well what?!"
"Mona, what do you expect me to do?"
"It is very simple. End things with Kathleen and beg Angela's forgiveness and tell her that you love her."
"Mona, I don't know if I can do that."
"Why not?"
"Why not? Mona, have you seen your daughter? She is beautiful, elegant, and owns her own business. A man like Andy is perfect for her. I'm not."
"That is garbage and you know it."
"And a woman like Kathleen is perfect for me."
Mona sighed. "Okay, maybe on paper Andy is the perfect guy for Angela and Kathleen is the perfect woman for you but do you know what is missing in both of those situations?"
Tony shook his head.
"Love Tony. L.O.V.E. You don't love Kathleen and Angela doesn't love Andy."
"How do you know I don't love Kathleen?"
"Because I know you. I have seen the way you look at my daughter. I have heard the awe in your voice. And okay maybe you do care about Kathleen. But, you are in love with Angela and have been for years. You are just hiding behind Kathleen because she is safe."
Tony leaned his head back and closed his eyes.
"And another thing."
Tony sighed and sat back up.
"Okay, what other thing?"
"You have been leading Angela and Kathleen around for far too long. It has to stop!"
"What do you mean?"
"What do I mean? Tony, you have been dating Kathleen when you damn well know you're in love with Angela. You are lying to the poor woman and preventing her from being with someone who truly wants to be with her. "
"But…"
"No buts! Except the one I told you to get off of!"
Tony sighed and stood up. He walked over to the stairs and put his hand on the bannister. After a minute he walked up the stairs. The slam of his door echoed through the house.

"Valentine's Day? What in the hell…." Sam trailed off when she realized what he was talking about.
Jonathan nodded his head,
"Wait, you mean set them up somewhere like you did when you were a kid for Valentine's Day?!"
"Yeah! I mean come on! It's perfect don't you think?"
"Jonathan, I…"
"Okay fine, Go ahead and say it! It's stupid and I'm a dork for even thinking about it!"
"That wasn't what I was going to say at all."
"You weren't?"
"No, what I was going to say is that I love it! "
"You do? Really? But when I set them up when I was a kid you laughed about it."
"Because it was funny. But, at the same time I was impressed."
"You were?"
"Well, yeah. I mean what eight year old kid even thinks about doing something like that? But, now it won't just be you. It will be all three of us."
Jonathan nodded and grinned.
"Yeah, all three of us."
"All three of us, what?" Mona asked, coming into the kitchen.
"Jonathan has the perfect plan to get Dad and Angela together!"
"Oh yeah? What is it? We lock them in a room somewhere?"
"You're close Grandma. Do you remember when I set them up for Valentine's Day?"
A smile spread across Mona's face. "Oh, yeah I do."
"So we just have to do it again. And with the three of us working together Dad and Angela won't stand a chance!"
Mona sat down in the chair that was between them.
"Okay troops if we're going to do this then let's do it!"
Sam and Jonathan grinned at each other.
"Okay Mona so what's the plan?"
"Yeah, Grandma. What do we do?"
"Well we…..
