13.) Cut out for Me
The Sun was rising in the east, the same as any other day. The man had been resting in a chair holding vigil for the woman he was trying to save. He didn't know her. He didn't know her character. He did know that she was an innocent person caught in a horrible mess. Based on what he heard from the Doctor the previous night, she'd suffered a great deal of trauma over the last few years. Standing outside her door keeping watch was the woman's estranged husband. Their relationship was a mystery to the people around them.
The constant steady beeping confirmed that her heart was beating.
Slowly dark blue eyes emerged from behind their heavy lids, "Where am I?" the voice whispered out.
"You're at General Hospital, Elizabeth," Alec explained.
"In Port Charles?" She questioned raising a curious brow.
"Yes," the man answered.
Elizabeth lifted a brow, "I- Who are you?"
"I'm Alec Winters, a detective from Washington D.C.," the man stated.
Elizabeth was drugged not stupid, "Washington?"
"I can see you're confused. I'm here because my niece was taken 6 days ago. Her name is Lainey Winters," the Alec confessed.
Elizabeth concentrated, "I think I talked to her."
Alec let a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding and turned toward the door, "I'll go get your doctor."
"There were so many women. There were voices coming from every direction. It broke my heart," Elizabeth stated near tears.
Alec turned back around to Elizabeth and grasped her hand, "Let me get your doctor."
Elizabeth nodded as Alec walked away.
"You're awake," Jason said softly as he walked into the room.
Elizabeth was obviously surprised as she let out a gasp, "Jason, w-what are you doing here?"
Jason approached slowly, and Elizabeth shrunk away frightened, "Whoa-whoa, I'm not going to hurt you. I owe you an apology for so many things."
"Y-You do?" Elizabeth stated but turned away from him.
Jason was shocked to see her flinch away. She always sought him out in the past, but the last 48 hours and his treatment of her only cemented her fear of him.
Elizabeth slowly peeked at Jason, "What makes you think I'm owed an apology?"
Jason pushed his fingers into his eyes, "Stop. Just stop. I know you're innocent. I know we were wrong.- I know that I was wrong to treat you the way that I did. I'm sorry for the pain that I caused you."
Elizabeth laid in her hospital bed and absorbed Jason's words, "I don't know what I'm supposed to say. This is all very surprising."
"You don't have to say anything. I just wanted you to know. Nothing that I can say will ever make this right," Jason acknowledged as he took a seat.
Elizabeth only nodded shocked as the tears fell down her face.
"Sunshine, you're awake!" Dr. Drake said looking at one of his favorite nurses.
"Patrick!" Elizabeth said excited. "You're here now?" She questioned.
"Moved onto bigger and better things. Heard this was the place to be," Patrick replied.
Jason was surprised at the exchange. He hadn't seen Elizabeth this happy since their wedding day. That realization has him sick to his stomach. He again realized that she thought the entire wedding was real, and he had no idea. The conversation continued and Jason was brought out of this thoughts.
"Patrick, I can't believe you're my doctor. I haven't seen you in such a long time," Elizabeth said.
"Still as beautiful as ever," Patrick replied with a wink.
"Still the same bedside manner," Elizabeth replied shaking her head disbelieving with a small smile.
"There's my favorite nurse," Patrick flirted back.
"Please, as long as we have the right chromosomes we're all your favorite nurse," Elizabeth answered back smartly.
"Ah, I'm crushed," Patrick said with a classic smirk, "Still as witty as ever. Now then, how are you feeling?"
'About time he gets to doctoring,' Jason thought perturbed. Jason was surprised at the direction of his own thoughts. He realized that he could define that emotion as 'jealousy?' Elizabeth answered Patrick bringing Jason out of his thoughts.
"Little groggy. My ankle hurts a little," Elizabeth replied
"You were given a drug but we flushed it out of your system. Also, you're sporting a sprained ankle," Patrick replied.
He took out his light pen and shined it into Elizabeth's eyes. Her pupils were reacting normally. She'd busted a blood vessel in her left eye.
"I'm surprised it wasn't broken. I fell down a steep ridge when I was trying to get away from them," Elizabeth explained.
"Them?" Jason interjected leaning forward.
Elizabeth nodded, "There were two of them. I think," she said as she shivered uncomfortably.
Patrick noticing this said, "We can talk about that later. Like I said earlier you were given something."
"Yeah, it was a-an analgesic. It was effecting my nervous system," Elizabeth stated matter-of-factly as she noticed that Alec had returned as well.
"Very good. You should've gone to Med-school, Mrs. Morgan," Patrick replied as he looked over at Jason shaking his head in disapproval at what should have been.
"You remember that? That seems so long ago now," Elizabeth replied looking down at her hands.
Patrick saw this and said, "You're still young and there's still time. For now let's focus on your health. We've flushed your system of the Disolusional, but you may continue to experience involuntary spasming from time to time.
"I still feel groggy," Elizabeth said.
"I'm not surprised. You were given an amnesiac," Patrick supplied.
"Was I…you know?" Elizabeth questioned hoping Patrick understood.
Patrick looked at the gentlemen in the room hoping they would take the hint and leave.
"Oh Patrick, they don't have to leave. They would probably find out anyway. Just answer me," Elizabeth said as tears started to fall.
"Are you sure Elizabeth, because I can make them leave," Patrick stated as both men started to rise on their own.
"No, you might as well say it. It could help Alec's niece and those poor women to get all the relevant information," Elizabeth said.
"And him?" Patrick said pointing to Jason. Jason glared at Patrick.
"It doesn't matter. It's alright. Just tell me," Elizabeth said.
"If you want me to step out I don't mind," Jason said. He could tell she was very uncomfortable.
"It's fine. It'll come out of eventually. These things have a way of coming out. You might as well just stay," Elizabeth said, "Well Patrick?"
"We swabbed for seminal fluid. There was none and no signs of trauma," Patrick advised.
Elizabeth let out a nervous breath then nodded her head in understanding, secretly thankful that it didn't happen –again.
"I wasn't sure. One of them talked to me about the rules," Elizabeth said, "I think."
"One of them?" Alec asked, "You mean there was more than one person involved?"
"Yeah, there was a fight just before my escape," Elizabeth explained.
"They were fighting with you?" Patrick asked.
"No, with each other!" Elizabeth said.
"Oh, well who did that to your head? That bruise is at least a weak old," Patrick asked.
"That was given to me by one of Ric Lansing's goons," Elizabeth said.
"Ric?" Patrick asked. Elizabeth nodded and Jason grimaced. His hatred for Sonny's brother growing exponentially by the second, "As in Ric Lansing, the D.A.'s husband?"
"The one in the same," Elizabeth answered.
"But why?" Patrick asked why.
"I know too much. That's all I can say," Elizabeth answered, "Let's just say that I have something he desperately wants."
"Is he the one that broke your ribs?" Patrick asked.
Alec just took it all in. Apparently, this young woman had more guts then anyone realized. She was a survivor.
"How do you-? Elizabeth stopped herself from finishing the question.
"We ordered x-rays. Did Ric do that to you?" Patrick wanted to know. He wasn't good with his fists, but he knew people who were. 'What kind of sick freak goes after a defenseless woman?' He pondered.
"No, people he hired. That's why I had to leave town," Elizabeth answered in shame at her situation.
Patrick looked at her, "I know you're going to be okay now. We'll take great care of you."
"When you say it I almost believe that," Elizabeth stated with a small smile.
"That's because it's true. Look, I have rounds. I promise I'll be back," Patrick said. "Try to rest."
"Thanks, Patrick," Elizabeth said as Patrick stepped away.
Jason was sitting in a chair across the room. Just observing. He'd never seen Elizabeth engaged in a lighthearted conversation before. All that knew of her, made him think that she was incapable. He acknowledged that he didn't really know Elizabeth. He never gave her a chance and misjudged her horribly. 'When did I become such a hypocrite?' he questioned to himself. He was pulled from his thoughts as Alec approached the bed.
Elizabeth noticed Alec approach her and said, "I'm sorry about your niece Lainey. I'm sorry I couldn't do more."
"Shhh- This is not your fault. I was wondering if you could tell me anything you remember. It doesn't have to be a lot, just some place to start. I don't want to upset Patrick. You're supposed to be resting," Alec stated.
Elizabeth was getting uncomfortable with the flashbacks entering her brain, and frowned her forehead in concentration, "Where do you want me to start?"
"Calm down. I'm not here to interrogate you. I never meant to suggest that," Alec stated thinking that perhaps given her history she might be uncomfortable with a police officer.
"It's not that. The medicine made my brain fuzzy. Although, I don't typically talk to the police. I was raised by Anthony Zacchara, well kind of. But I will do anything I can to help you find those poor women," Elizabeth offered.
"What do you remember seeing at the PCPD lock up?" Alec asked.
"It's all so foggy. There was a scuffle. I think, between the person that took me and a guard. I don't know if that really happened or not.
"Where were you taken?" Alec asked.
"I don't know. It-it was dark, smelled musty, wet, dank. It doesn't make any sense. It's all so confusing."
"It's probably the Disolusional, like Patrick said," Alec advised.
"I remember the women's voices. Their voices were everywhere. I couldn't see them, but I could hear them," Elizabeth said upset.
"You may find that your memory will come back in time," Alec said.
"I hope so," Elizabeth replied.
"I'm going to my hotel. This is my card. After you rest, if you think of anything or need to talk you can reach me at this number," Alec said handing Elizabeth his card and then walking away.
"So where do we go from here, Jason?" Elizabeth asked.
Jason got up and sat in a chair that was closer to Elizabeth then he answered, "I don't know. We have a lot to work out, but now isn't the time. You look tired," Jason said.
"I don't understand. I did what you wanted and signed the divorce papers. What more do I need to do so we can move on?" Elizabeth asked confused.
"I need to make amends, and then there's the matter of our child, Elizabeth. I've met Cameron. I know," Jason stated.
"You know about Cameron?" Elizabeth asked slightly astonished.
"Yes, he's beautiful," Jason stated with tears in his eyes, "He has your lips."
"We can finally agree on something," Elizabeth said. "I don't understand. What more needs to be discussed?"
"I don't want to get into this now, but there is the matter of custody," Jason said, "I would like to be able to provide for you both. I know that it's been hard on you. I would also like to get to know him."
"You would?" Elizabeth asked surprised.
"Of course. He's our child. I want to know him," Jason said.
"Oh now I get it. You're not here because you're sorry. You're here because you want to know our son and you feel that the only way to do that is to be nice to me. Unbelievable!" Elizabeth replied shaking her head.
"No, th-that's not it. I've learned a lot over last 48 hours. I do want to know him. However, my wanting to know him doesn't diminish the horrors you've experienced and the part that I played in them. For that I'm sorry and I know that I can't make it right, but I would like to try. I know I don't deserve a second thought from you, but if you coul-," Jason said obviously upset with himself for upsetting Elizabeth further.
"But Cam does. You're right. If it was just me, I could easily push you out of my life and never look back. But Cameron deserves to have you in his life. It'll depend on certain things. Like who you have in your life. Are you still dating my aunt? Because, I really don't want her around Cameron. Then there's Carly. She's been awful to me and even violent on occasion. I don't want him around her either. I hope you can respect that. We've been through enough," Elizabeth said quite resolute on the matter.
Jason thought about her terms. Thankfully he was no longer with Courtney, but she obviously didn't know about Sam. Hell he didn't know what he was going to do about Sam for now.
"I'm no longer with Courtney, but Carly is one of my dearest friends," Jason said.
"This isn't up for debate. Carly will not have access to Cameron," Elizabeth stated, "You forget that she hit me while I was pregnant."
"If you can't stand Carly then why did you save her?" Jason asked in disbelief.
"I didn't save Carly. I saved my younger brother or sister. I did it for my father. Carly herself is not someone I give a lot thought about," Elizabeth said.
Jason just nodded, "Let's table this for now. Your blood pressure's gone up," as he looked at her monitor.
"I'm sure it has. The people you're closest to have made my life hell and for no reason," Elizabeth said, "And now you want to expose our innocent child to them."
"I understand why you feel the way you feel. I just need some time to adapt," Jason stated as he ran a tired palm against his face.
"I'm sure you have other things to do. You don't need to stay," Elizabeth said.
"Other things?" Jason asked.
"Yeah, far more important things that you needed to get to," Elizabeth said.
"What things are those?" Jason asked.
"I don't know but it was all that you and my father could talk about during our divorce Jason. So if you have somewhere else to be, I understand. I've never been high on your priority list," Elizabeth stated.
'Ouch,' Jason thought. She wasn't going to make this easy on him. Not that he blamed her one bit, "Well you freed Carly, so now we can focus on getting you better, and go from there," Jason said.
"Who's we?" Elizabeth asked as she turned away from Jason to lay on her side. This turn of events was more than she was capable of dealing with at the moment. 'Invisible for 3 years, ne'er a word. The truth is revealed and somehow everyone is overly interested,' she thought.
'Oh yeah, I have my work cut out for me,' Jason thought shaking his head.
