Chapter 6: December

Eleanor's POV

It was December twentieth. I was busy in my room this morning, so I wanted to confirm I had everything prepared for the holidays. Of course, my flight wouldn't be until five o'clock. But Zelena insisted I go to school and would pick me up and drop me off at Port Angeles airport. It was impossible to hold back my excitement since the last time I saw my family was during summer vacation.

By Caster Law, dependents of a certain age must live with another caster away from family. This was supposed to keep distractions at bay. My grandfather was an exception since he qualified as my mentor and had loopholes in seeing my family on weekends. But now, living in Forks with Zelena, visitation is during the summer and winter holidays.

Although, I do worry about Ginger. Betsy's mom would come from New Orleans to celebrate Christmas with Ginger. Yet Ginger hasn't snapped out of her catatonic state. One time, when I went downstairs to get a snack, I listened to Zelena talking on the phone. I could assume it was the Council or Cordelia Foxx discussing Ginger's mental condition. The longer the girl's emotions are depressed, the higher the chances of backfire suicide. As much as I would like Ginger to stay here as my coven sister…except she is no longer the same.

"Eleanor, come on, it's time to go!" Zelena called out.

After double-checking my suitcase, I took it down to the main room. By the corner of the living room, there was already a Christmas tree with mild decorations. Ginger was sitting by the couch, gazing at the fireplace and watching the flames come alive.

"Excited for the holidays?" I asked Ginger.

Ginger looked at me, then shrugged. What is the point anymore? Sometimes, I wonder why I am even bothering. She has barely spoken to me these past few months except in minor conversation or chanting spells. Maybe I should give up and focus on my friends.

Zelena came out of the kitchen, handing me a pop tart before forcing us out of the house. We were all taking her Hybrid to school, and she'd pick us up and then drop me off at the airport, where a guardian would be waiting to escort me there. I put my suitcase in the trunk. I sat in the passenger seat, waiting for the winter break to begin.

.o0o.

"I'll see you girls around three," Zelena reminded.

Ginger and I got out of the car and nodded. Closing the door, Ginger immediately headed inside the school. I adjusted my coat as snow began to fall before meeting up with my friends. The gang wanted to talk about winter break. The guys considered going to Vancouver or a ski resort for the weekend. Even though I won't be going, hearing them talk is nice.

"Ella!" Somebody called out.

I gawked as I turned around to see Jacob standing in the middle of the parking lot. Seeing him made me giddy inside as I ignored my friends and rushed to Jacob. Due to exams and the weather, we haven't seen each other this past week. Of course, we have our usual calls and emails, but being around Jacob is like being close to the sun. Jacob chuckled as he gave me a hug, though he did his annual spin around.

"Jacob, what are you doing here?" I asked after he put me down.

"Came to see you?" Jacob answered.

"What about school?" I asked, worried he was ditching class.

"Winter break started last Friday." He answered with a grin.

"Of course, though, you should switch schools. Come hang out with the palefaces." I teased.

Jacob laughed, shaking his head. "I'm all right. I prefer the Rez school's exclusivity. They let any old riffraff into this place." He gestured to my school.

"Huh, so why aren't you hanging out with Quil and Embry?" I asked.

"I was just buying a part for the bikes," Jacob answered proudly.

"Reconstruction going well, I presume?" I asked.

"Um. Yeah," Jacob hesitated. Of course, we chuckled since those bikes will take longer to restore than a regular motorcycle. "Hey, Merry Christmas. Since you're goin' back home for the holidays, I thought I should give you your gift."

"Jake, you didn't have to." I started.

Jacob shook his head as he pulled something out of his coat pocket. "I saw this the other day and thought of you." It was a small dreamcatcher with a couple of charms: a wolf,, seashell, beads, and a crystal. "Catches bad dreams."

He handed me the dreamcatcher, which I took in gratitude. Small tokens like these actually work in Caster society. It depends on the craftsmanship and material used to create such a powerful charm. And by the looks of it, this one is undoubtedly workable. Let alone it brought memories of my grandmother Evangeline. "It's lovely. Thank you."

"No problem," Jacob said with a huge smile.

My dreams were getting complicated again. I still have nightmares of James on that specific day or seeing him off in the distance. Sometimes, my spirit animal would come, but lately, the wolf hasn't shown up much. Hopefully, this dreamcatcher can keep the Tracker away when my wolf can't.

Then I realized Jacob had brought me a gift, and I didn't have his.

"Uh, I don't have yours with me…sorry," I mumbled.

"It's alright, though there is one way you could repay me?" He suggested.

"And what is that?" I asked.

Jacob took something out of his pocket and hung it over our heads. I couldn't help but laugh at the mistletoe tied in a red ribbon. It has been noted that Jacob has a crush on me and the same feelings in return for him. However, I tried to keep the boundaries because I was a witch, and he was an average person. I feared we would get hurt once I completed my training and the semi-immortality.

It would be wrong to leave the boy hanging there. So, with a nod, I moved forward and gave Jacob a simple peck on the lips. Suddenly, there was a surge of electricity, causing us to step back and rub our lips from the unexpected shock.

"Um, I'll see you on January third?" I awkwardly asked.

"Yeah," Jacob agreed as we hugged each other.

We said our goodbyes as Jacob headed back towards his Rabbit while I went to school, keeping the dreamcatcher close. The kiss significantly impacted me, or at least had me debating if it was the typical conducting electricity moment or something else. As I entered the school, Jessica and Angela were all over me. Well…more like Jessica. She asked who that boy was, if he was my boyfriend, and how long we had seen each other.

I was still overwhelmed by this kiss and Jessica's interrogation. Angela saw my blush and smiled. I did not know where my relationship with Jacob was or what had just happened.

I know it's short, but I couldn't think of anything else.
