Chapter 8: A Game of Tag
Ginger's POV
I walked happily after Zelena asked me to get Eleanor for today's lessons. Today, we are going to try Transmutation. An ability that teleports from one place to another. When I got off the biker's motorcycle…it was a total rush. One that I never felt before, and it had an addicting taste to do it again. Although, I have to do it properly. I remember Cordelia saying that if you transmutate irrationally or lose control, you could get impaled or be in a worse situation.
As I reached Eleanor's door, I stopped to hear her awake and on the phone.
"Sorry, Jake, I can't make it this morning. Zelena piled on more chores for me today." Eleanor said.
More chores were our excuse to our friends if they wanted to hang out, but we had our lessons. I know it is wrong to eavesdrop, but I want to catch up. I need to make things right with Eleanor. From what I recall, Eleanor has taken care of me throughout the night. Most of the time, when I have nightmares, Eleanor is there to wake me and comfort me. How she made sure I ate and was on time for school. When she helps me with my magical studies. And I let her down when she offered to do stuff and spend time.
I'm a terrible friend and Coven Sister.
"Maybe I'll see if Zelena can let me off, and we can go parts hunting tomorrow," Eleanor said. "Jake, relax. Go and spend some time with your friends. The bikes will be there tomorrow. Work on the Rabbit or something."
Bikes? I thought, surprised. Eleanor has bikes?
Now that I think about it, she spends a lot of time at Jacob's, covered in grease and dirt. Has she been over there fixing some type of motorcycle? The thought about last night before I teleported and the rush in was incredible. Before…he interrupted the fun. Maybe Eleanor can let me join in on the fun.
"I'll call you later, Jake," Eleanor murmured, then stopped. "I…I don't know. Let me check my schedule. Okay, bye."
I wonder why she hesitated. She hardly hesitates, yet at this moment, she did. It is well known Jacob likes Eleanor. However, she is forcing herself not to return the feelings. Maybe I'll make it my mission to be Cupid. At least they should give their relationship a chance.
Realizing she was walking over to the door. I pretended to knock, but the door opened at the same time. Eleanor stepped back, startled to see me.
I smiled and grabbed her hand, "Come on, we got training."
"Easy," Eleanor grumbled, almost tripping.
"Sorry," I apologized, letting go.
Eleanor sighed as she followed me downstairs. We headed outside, where Zelena stood waiting. She seemed calm in the light rain. We stood in front of her, wondering how things would go.
"Today's lesson is Transmutation. The ability to teleport from one location to another. However, this ability is used for a short distance." Zelena said and then suddenly disappeared. Eleanor and I blinked out of surprise until we jumped from being startled as hands rested on our shoulders. We turned around to see an amused Zelena. "Although, many witches and warlocks who have this particular ability use it for child's play."
"How do we control it?" I asked.
"First, you think hard about why you want to travel. Your magic will stir in your gut as a mechanism, similar to a fight or flight." Zelena explained. "Once you grasp it, then you can move anywhere."
Zelena continued to explain how to teleport. When she was done, I let my instincts take control. Remembering how it happened, the sharp, tight feeling curled in my stomach. It no longer felt like somebody punched me in the gut. More like a squeeze on every organ. A coiling of a snake that I could only describe it. At that moment, I thought about being behind Eleanor. And just like that, the world around me became obscure in a swirling motion with a blast of wind. The next thing I knew, I jumped behind her as she blinked at my disappearance.
I couldn't help but smirk as I tapped her shoulder, making her jump. "Tag, you're it."
Then I disappeared. Eleanor groaned as she tried to teleport, though she was struggling. For once, I felt like I beat her in something unique. She had so many abilities, from telekinesis to divination. It's nice to know I can have the advantage at something. So I teleported here and there around her, poking her arms and sides. This irritated Eleanor as she tried to control her emotions.
The moment I was about to jump her, she vanished.
"NO!" I dramatically cried.
Suddenly, I was shoved, stumbling forward. I turned around to see Eleanor with a smirk, "No tagbacks."
Afterward, she vanished.
Oh, it's on! I thought.
I tagged Zelena, who gave a protest and then vanished. Soon, it was a game of tag. We were teleporting everywhere, tagging each other in the backyard. As time passed, Zelena stopped pausing for a moment and grew serious, "Stop right now."
"Oh, come on, we're having fun," I protested.
"And I say stop. Somebody is coming." Zelena ordered.
Eleanor and I stopped, not sure what she meant. We walked around the house to see a cruiser coming over. Chief Swan? What is he doing here? Zelena held a neutral face as she walked over to the driveway. As the cruiser parked, Charlie came out with a serious look.
"Charlie, what a surprise." Zelena greeted. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
Charlie seemed relieved when seeing her, "Came to check on you ladies."
"What for?" Zelena asked.
"There was another animal attack and more bear sightings," He explained. "I wanted to make sure you all are aware and to be on guard."
"Charlie, you don't have to worry. I'll have my security up." Zelena assured.
"I know, I know," he said. "But you and your girls living in the forest concern me."
"Which I appreciate," Zelena said. "Would you like to stay for lunch?"
"Don't mind if I do." He accepted.
Zelena smiled and led Charlie inside. Eleanor and I stood there, amused by how easily Zelena could manipulate people, especially Charlie. He could have a crush on Zelena. She is beautiful, after all. I wonder when he will learn the truth that she was a witch and had been casting spells in town.
"So, how long will it be before he has the balls to ask her?" I asked Eleanor.
"I don't know. They've been friends for many years," Eleanor answered. "But we casters rarely associate with average humans."
"Because we don't age normally?" I guessed.
Eleanor nodded, "I mean, there are spells that we use on them to age slowly like us. However, some people don't want a Tuck Everlasting life."
"Tuck ever what?" I asked.
"Tuck Everlasting," Eleanor repeated. "Seriously, it's a children's classic about immortality."
I merely shrug, "I grew up on Dr. Seuss."
Eleanor rolled her eyes as she started walking back in. I followed her, "And what about you and Jacob?"
She stopped, baffled by what I had just said.
"What about Jacob?" she replied.
"Are you two, you know…a thing?" I asked.
Eleanor sighed, "Jake and I are friends."
"Really, Jessica mentioned you two kissed before Christmas," I recalled.
Eleanor gave me a look. One that said I have crossed the line. What? I was merely curious if she liked him. I want my friend to be happy, not because I am interested in Jacob. Okay, sure, I haven't seen or communicated with Jacob since Thanksgiving, but still…he is somewhat of a friend. So they deserve to be happy.
Eleanor, however, shook her head and went inside. I stood there watching her go inside sadly. Why does she deny herself happiness? Even though that happiness was taken away from me, I didn't want Eleanor to feel like Jacob was the one who had gotten away.
So, it is my obligation to get those two together before graduation.
