Chapter 2: Teiko Junior High
In the last chapter of "The Dragon Phantom Sixth Man":
Kuroko then snuggled up to his mother and rubbed his cheek on hers.
He was trying to cheer his mother up and this was something that always worked.
And it seemed to have worked again as Natsume smiled as she kissed Kuroko's cheek.
"I love you, my beautiful Tetsu." Natsume said.
"I love you too, kaa-san." Kuroko said as he hugged his mother.
Normal POV
After the emotional scene that had took place, both mother and son decided to spend the rest of the evening watching television together, as they normally would on a weekend before Natsume headed to the kitchen preparing dinner with Kuroko providing support in any way he could.
As soon as dinner was made, the two began eating their meal while talking about all sorts of stuff.
As they were eating, Masaharu finally arrived back home, apologizing for arriving late to which Natsume waved it off claiming that his work was important before preparing some food for her husband.
Kuroko smiled happily as he watched his mother and father interact with one another. While they were clearly opposites from each other, they were happy. And they always make sure to share that happiness with him.
This family was always happy. And he wouldn't have it any other way.
The next day
Kuroko then put on his clothes and looked at the mirror in his room, admiring the sports clothes he had rarely gotten the chance to wear before picking up the basketball laying by his bed.
He then proceeded to head downstairs to the living room where his father greeted him with a small smile, one which he returned. The two proceeded to eat their breakfast as his mother was currently out at work.
As they ate, Kuroko then told his father about going to the nearby basketball to play basketball, which surprised the black haired male.
"Wow, you're going to play basketball? Do you know the rules of the games?" Masaharu asked as Kuroko nodded his head as he smiled.
"Yeah, and I even made a new friend! His name is Shigehiro Ogiwara and he taught me how to play basketball!" Kuroko said as his father smiled at him.
"Well I'm happy that you made a new friend, Tetsuya." Masaharu said as Kuroko smiled at his father.
"Thanks otou-san!" Kuroko said as he finished the last of his breakfast.
"Well just to let you know, I may be late for dinner, so tell your mother to not stay up if I am." Masaharu said as Kuroko nodded his head signifying he understood.
"Well I'm going now!" Kuroko said as he ran outside the door with the basketball in his arm.
Masaharu then smiled once his son had left.
'At least he has something to occupy his time with now.' Masaharu thought before he headed to his room to change his clothes as he had to leave the house soon.
With Kuroko
Kuroko then ran through the neighbourhood with a smile on his face, excited at the thought of playing basketball with Ogiwara again.
It took him a while, but he finally arrived at the basketball court where he saw Ogiwara making a Layup, scoring in the process.
"Ogiwara-kun!" Kuroko called out as the brunette turned around to see Kuroko running towards him.
"Kuroko!" Ogiwara called out with a smile on his face as the brunette walked over towards the light blue haired boy.
"Well, look who's finally here." Ogiwara teased as Kuroko smiled.
"And this time you are earlier than me today, Ogiwara-kun. Why is that?" Kuroko asked.
"Of course I came early today, we're going to play with each other again, and I never felt so excited when I play basketball before!" Ogiwara said happily as Kuroko smiled at his new friend.
"Yeah. Anyways, let's go and play!" Kuroko said, getting a smile from the brunette before the both of them ran onto the court and began playing for the rest of the day.
A few months later
It had been a few months since both Ogiwara and Kuroko befriended one another considering their shared interest over a certain sport. And now that it was winter break, the two would play with each other from the early hours till late in the evening, with their parents' approval of course.
Currently we see Kuroko running through the same streets he had been passing by for so long, with his destination still unchanged.
And as he reached the court he saw Ogiwara bouncing the ball as he stared at the hoop.
"Ogiwara-kun!" Kuroko called out as Ogiwara then turned around to see Kuroko running towards him.
"Ah, Kuroko!" Ogiwara called out to the light blue haired male as he ran towards him.
"Why are you even later than usual?" Ogiwara asked as Kuroko rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.
"I kind of overslept since I stayed up late yesterday." Kuroko mumbled but Ogiwara still managed to hear him and smiled.
"Well do you want to play?" Ogiwara asked with a smile as Kuroko smiled back.
"Yeah let's-" Kuroko was interrupted when he saw two boys, who looked around the same age as them, walking towards their direction.
One was a boy with brown hair and the other had black hair.
"Hey you two." The brunette called out to Kuroko and Ogiwara.
"Hmm what is it?" Ogiwara asked.
"What are you two doing on our court?" the ravenette asked with a growl.
This of course, shocked and confused both Kuroko and Ogiwara who turned to look at each other before turning to face the boy again.
"Your court? What are you talking about? This basketball court belongs to the entire neighborhood, no one owns this court." Ogiwara explained.
"That may be the case, but when we are here, this basketball court belongs to us!" the brunette said arrogantly, pointing at himself.
"You don't even have a basketball with you!" Ogiwara protested with a glare.
"So what? We own it and there's nothing you can do about It." the ravenette taunted.
Ogiwara then narrowed his fists tightly at the boys, clenching his teeth in the process.
"Ogiwara-kun." The brunette felt someone placed a hand on his shoulder and when he turned back, he was surprised with what he saw.
Kuroko was behind him, but it was the expression he had on his face that really shocked him, as the light blue haired boy usually masks either an emotionless face or a happy expression, so it was rare to see the angry version of Kuroko.
"What's wrong? You going to cry back to mommy?" the ravenette taunted after not hearing anything from Ogiwara which caused the two of them to laugh loudly.
"Is that so?" Kuroko said with a monotone as both boys shrieked in fear when they saw the light blue haired boy standing behind them.
"Wait, when the hell did you get there?" Both boys asked simultaneously, though Kuroko ignored them.
"How about this, we play a two on two match, full court, the first team to score 10 points stays, while the loser leaves, deal?" Kuroko asked as both boys then started to discuss between themselves.
"Sure why not? But you better not regret your decision." the brunette said as he shook Kuroko's hand.
Ogiwara then pulled Kuroko back.
"Kuroko what were you thinking challenging them like that?" Ogiwara asked in a whisper.
"I'm annoyed that they think they own they own the entire court. That's why…" Kuroko said then looked at his friend with a determined look on his face.
"I'm not going to lose." Ogiwara stared at his friend in shock, and he could have sworn that there was a silhouette of a dragon behind Kuroko's back.
Ogiwara sighed as he patted the light blue haired boy's back.
"Well you're not going to be doing this alone, Kuroko, because I'm going to help out." Ogiwara said.
"But-" Kuroko tried to protest but Ogiwara held his hand out, stopping him.
"No buts, Kuroko! You're not the only one angry at them, so let me help you out! Besides this is a two versus two match! Who else are you going to find to help?" Ogiwara asked as Kuroko sighed.
Ogiwara was right. He instinctively called for a two versus two since there were two of them that he had absolutely forgot that he needed a partner of his own.
"Alright, let's do this, together." Kuroko said as Ogiwara smiled and nodded his head.
"Will you guys hurry it up? We don't have all day." the brunette said in a bored tone.
"Alright so who will start first?" Ogiwara asked.
"You'll start, we'll give you a chance to score first." the ravenette said in a cocky tone.
Ogiwara was about to retort but Kuroko held him back and looked at him.
Ogiwara nodded his head and took a basketball before he started the game by passing the ball to Kuroko.
Kuroko caught the ball before dribbling towards the centre of the court.
Kuroko saw that one of the boys were blocking Ogiwara, so passing to the chestnut haired boy would be a wrong move.
Kuroko then ran towards the goal where the other boy quickly stepped towards him, attempting to block him from scoring.
Kuroko then took a step back before shooting the ball, the raven haired boy attempted to block the shot by jumping but since he had jumped a second too late, Kuroko managed to score.
2-0.
"Alright good job, Kuroko!" Ogiwara praised as Kuroko gave a ghost smile as he had no time to be celebrating; they had to win this match.
"Heh, good shot, but that'll be the only shot that you'll make this match." the first boy said as he sneered at Kuroko.
Kuroko ignored him and then kept a defensive position.
The first boy then passed to his friend who caught the ball before he started dribbled his way to the goal, but Ogiwara was there, stopping him from going any further.
The boy then attempted to pass to his friend but Kuroko was there to steal the ball away before running towards the goal and laying the ball near the goal; making the goal.
4-0.
The two boys cursed at their mistake before resuming their attack again.
The first boy passes to his friend before making a regular shot from the free throw line; the ball enters the goal.
4-2.
Ogiwara then passed the ball to Kuroko who was already making his run towards the goal, attempting to score a Layup, however the brunette jumped towards him which caused Kuroko to pass the ball to Ogiwara who shot from the free throw line and scoring.
6-2.
However, before they could get back, the brunette threw the ball towards the ravenette who was waiting at their goal. He caught the ball before he threw the basketball at the backboard to which it bounced into the hoop.
6-4.
Ogiwara then passed the ball to Kuroko and started running in front but the first boy had intercepted the pass and started running towards the goal and shot the ball.
Right as he was about to shoot, Kuroko managed to get back and slap the ball away from his hand, much to the shock of everyone. Ogiwara then grabbed the loose ball and ran towards their opponent's goal, scoring an easy Layup.
8-4.
Kuroko and Ogiwara high fived each other as they both panted heavily with smiles on their face.
Their opponents were also panting heavily as they glared at both Kuroko and Ogiwara, clenching their fists.
"We are not going to lose to them!" the brunette said to his friend who nodded his head in agreement. Kuroko then turned to face the two boys who had looks of determination on their faces and from that alone, the light blue haired boy could tell that the match was far from over.
The brunette got the ball into play as he passed the ball to his friend who quickly drove through both Kuroko and Ogiwara before running up to the goal, scoring a Layup.
8-6.
Ogiwara then passed the ball to Kuroko who then started running in front and was about to pass the ball to Ogiwara but stopped seeing that the second boy was screening him.
The ball was then slapped out of Kuroko's hand, much to the light blue haired boy's shock.
The brunette then ran until he reached the three pointer line and shot from there. Much to everyone's shock.
The ball then entered the goal causing the ravenette to cheer and for Kuroko and Ogiwara to stare in horror at what had transpired.
The boys' fist bumped with each other and the both of them had smirks on their faces after seeing the shocked expressions on both Kuroko and Ogiwara's faces.
Kuroko and Ogiwara shook their heads before realised one thing. They were just a point off from losing.
The two then shared a look before nodding their heads at each other. They needed this next shot to win.
Ogiwara then passed the ball to Kuroko who caught the ball before he started running.
Kuroko then stopped when he saw the two boys standing right in front of him, Kuroko then did his best to try and protect the ball from their double teaming, and since he had no idea where Ogiwara was, he couldn't pass the ball to him.
Not a while later, the ball was then slapped out of Kuroko's hand and the two boys began running towards the goal.
Ogiwara then looked down, clenching his fists tightly, already preparing for their loss.
The two boys then had smirks plastered on both of their faces as the brunette then made a regular jump shot.
However, much too both boys' shock, Kuroko appeared in front of them and jumped up and blocked his shot, causing the ball to bounce away.
The light blue haired male quickly grabbed the ball from the ground and began running towards the goal, intending to finish the match.
However, his opponents quickly caught up to him and began their double teaming on him again.
Kuroko, looked up at the goal that was right in front of him and began growling. He then jumped up high, higher than any 10 year old kid was capable of and threw the ball towards the goal.
The ball then hit the rim as everyone held their breath as the ball circled around the rim before it eventually dropped into the goal. Which meant that Kuroko and Ogiwara had won the game with a score of 10-9.
Both Kuroko and Ogiwara cheered loudly as they high fived each other while their opponents looked at the ground with an unreadable look on their face.
Both boys then walked up to Kuroko and Ogiwara and held their hands out.
"Good game." Was all they said. This caused Kuroko and Ogiwara to smile as they held their hands out to meet theirs, shaking it.
Both boys then walked away from the basketball court without a single word or glance at them.
After they had left, Ogiwara turned towards his friend with a large smile on his face, "Wow that was an amazing match!" Ogiwara said as Kuroko nodded his head as he wiped the sweat off of his face.
"You really improved didn't you, Kuroko?" Ogiwara asked as Kuroko nodded his head.
"Yeah and it's all thanks to you, Ogiwara-kun." Kuroko said as Ogiwara smiled as he waved his hands.
"Nah, it's all you. I only taught you what I know, but you truly grown, Kuroko." Ogiwara said as he stared up at the sky with a sombre look on his face.
"I'm happy to get the chance to play with each other as a team before leaving." Ogiwara said as Kuroko's eyes widened at the news.
"What?" Kuroko asked as Ogiwara realised the slip up he made.
"Oops, I wasn't supposed to tell you about that yet." Ogiwara said as he rubbed his head with a sheepish grin on his face.
Kuroko frowned but his frowned disappeared once Ogiwara put his arm around Kuroko's neck.
"Don't worry, I'm sure we'll meet again soon but before I leave, could we both promise each other something?" Ogiwara asked as Kuroko was confused.
"A promise?" Kuroko asked.
"Yeah, let's make a promise to join our school's middle school team and maybe someday we'll even play each other." Ogiwara said as Kuroko smiled at the thought. It was definitely exciting.
"Hai!"
Next week, Ogiwara left town but despite this, Kuroko still remembered his best friend and his promise to him.
A few years later
Kuroko then groaned as he woke up from the alarm clock that was right beside his bed.
The boy then slowly got out of bed, rubbing his eyes tiredly before opening the curtains, allowing light to enter his room, brightening it in the process.
As soon as Kuroko was done preparing himself in the bathroom, he walked down the stairs to the living room where he was greeted by his mother who placed a kiss on his cheek and handed him his breakfast which consisted of some toast.
As soon as he was done, Natsume then drove Kuroko off to his school, saying that she needed to use her car anyways, so she might as well drop him off.
Once they had arrived at school, Natsume then placed a kiss on Kuroko's forehead and wished him good luck on his first day of school to which Kuroko smiled gratefully at her and told her that he loves her.
Kuroko then got out of the car and stared at his new school in awe. It was definitely twice the size of all the other schools he had seen nearby his home.
Teiko Junior High, a school with an amazing record of both academics and especially sports, namely basketball.
The light blue haired boy couldn't help but grin as he thought back to the promise he and Ogiwara made a few years back. He was definitely going to accomplish it, no matter what it takes!
