Chapter 5: First, Second and Third String Part 2
In the last chapter of "The Dragon Phantom Sixth Man":
Normal POV
"We will then start the next test soon, so rest up for a bit and get prepared." Naoto said as he and the second year students all left the gym.
Kuroko smiled to himself, satisfied with the performance he had done for the first test.
One down! Two to go!
Normal POV
Kuroko wiped off the sweat which was falling profusely from his face as he reached for his bag at the edge of the court before pulling out a bottle of water. The boy immediately sat down before drinking the water hungrily as if his life depended on it.
After consuming enough water, the boy immediately placed the bottle back into his bag and as he was about to get up, someone tapped him on his shoulder prompting him to turn back where he saw Akashi who appeared right in front of him. This caused Kuroko to let out a shocked gasp as he dropped to the ground on his butt.
Akashi giggled at seeing this as Kuroko groaned, finally understanding how others felt when he did it to them. He also wondered as to how she not only detected his presence but also shocked HIM in the first place.
Kuroko would like to believe that he was a very observant person, so the fact she managed to reach his blind spot was rather impressive, not that he would let her know that.
Akashi then extended her hand towards him as Kuroko thanked the redhead as he pulled himself up, "You should be more aware to your surroundings, Kuroko. You'll never know what might happen to you if you don't." she teased.
Kuroko could only nod his head and as Akashi was about to walk towards the court, she then collided with another student which knocked her back and as she was about to fall, someone managed to grab onto her.
She turned back to see none other than Kuroko who had his signature blank look on his face, but the girl could see a slight lift of his lips.
"Akashi-san you should pay more attention when you are walking, it's rather dangerous wouldn't you agree?" Kuroko asked and Akashi detected a hint of satisfaction in his tone which immediately caused a tint of red to dust across her cheeks, realizing her mistake as she quickly separated herself from the boy and looked away from him to hide the blush that was on her face.
"S-sorry about that." Akashi stuttered embarrassedly as Kuroko merely shook his head.
"It's alright, just be careful next time." Kuroko said as the doors opened to reveal Naoto and the other first string members.
"Alright you brats! Let's get on with the next test!" Nijimura shouted causing everyone to quickly head to the centre of the court.
"In this test, all of you must find a partner that is in your group and you have to perform at least fifty chest passes with each other. Also, don't think that it'll be an easy test because the a member of the first string will be taking part of your test, ready to steal the ball each time you attempt to pass to your partner or whenever you're holding onto it. Is that understood?" Naoto asked.
"Understood!" Everyone shouted out as everyone in the gym then started moving around, trying to find a partner.
Just as Kuroko was about to walk around in order to find a partner for himself, Akashi then pulled on his sleeve which caused him to turn towards the redhead.
"Hmm what is it, Akashi-san?" Kuroko asked as a small blush appeared on her face.
"Could the two of us be partners?" Akashi asked looking on the floor to prevent Kuroko from seeing the blush she had.
'Why am I blushing? There's no hidden meaning to my question!' Akashi thought, immediately denying her thought as she was brought back to reality when Kuroko shook her body lightly.
"Akashi-san are you alright? I'll tell the coach that you're not feeling alright if you want." Kuroko asked worriedly as Akashi shook her head as she gave a reassuring smile to the light blue haired boy.
"I'm fine, Kuroko. I was just thinking about something." Akashi responded as Kuroko, although he still felt slightly suspicious, nodded his head in understanding.
"Alright then, but I said that I was happy to be your partner before you spaced out." Kuroko said as Akashi then thanked the light blue haired male with a smile.
A while passed before they all gathered at the centre of the court where Nijimura and the others were standing, "Alright have all of you found your partners?" Nijimura asked as everyone nodded their heads.
"Good! Now let the second test commence!" Nijimura shouted.
"Yes!"
Much like before, Kuroko's team were the last to take the test.
Seeing as it would take a while before their turn, the boy decided to wait on the bench and watch the others perform their tests. Some had did quite well seeing as they managed to accomplish the test, but for those who had Nijimura conducting it, they had a harder time considering the captain was fast in his movements and was capable of reading theirs.
Deciding that it was rather boring to just sit by and watch, the boy decided to get some shuteye as he laid down on the bench, using his bag as a pillow.
"You shouldn't try and sleep when the test is going on, you know." a voice said as Kuroko lazily opened an eye and saw Akashi sitting beside him.
Kuroko prompted to close his eye again, as he placed a hand over his eyes.
"Why are you following me again? I'm quite confused as to why you're there wherever I go." Kuroko stated as Akashi turned as red as her hair at that.
"N-no don't get the wrong idea! I was just following you because you're my partner and if you get in trouble then I wouldn't have one and that'll stop me from reaching the first string!" Akashi defended herself and the boy prevented himself from rolling his eyes from the red haired female's rather poor excuse.
"Alright then if you say so. Please wake me up when it is our turn to start." Kuroko said and he heard Akashi cried out but he ignored her and began to sleep.
In Kuroko's Mind
'Well this is a surprise.'
Kuroko looked around in hopes of being able to see something, however the only thing he could see was darkness.
'I was sure it would have been a dreamless sleep as well.' Kuroko thought curiously but he could only shrug and wonder why he was even having such a dream.
ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOAARRRRRRRR
A loud sound suddenly boomed through the darkness as Kuroko immediately covered his ears, feeling as if they would burst if he hadn't. The boy quickly turned towards the source of the sound and was shocked at what he was witnessing.
Because standing right in front of him was a none other than a dragon.
The dragon was covered with dark, black and red scales. His back has numerous black spikes, reaching down all the way from his back to the end of his tail. The dragon has a triangular head with horns, a pair of large, round eyes with yellow sclera and a sharp horn pointing upwards just above his nose. The dragon also sports very sharp canine teeth, and has claws with long, sharp; red nails. Its bony wings on its back resembled to that of a bat.
Although Kuroko looked to be emotionless at the sight of the mythical creature, on the inside, he was scared; scratch that he was terrified. As a single question ran through his head,
How or, better yet, why was there a dragon in his dream?!
The boy was extremely anxious and scared as to what the dragon might do to him, but the dragon merely stared at him for the longest time, not moving a single inch.
Wondering if the dragon had spotted him or not, Kuroko decided to take a step closer towards the dragon and hoped that he wouldn't be noticed in the process.
Unfortunately for the light blue headed male; the dragon shifted its head to directly stare at the boy.
Kuroko immediately froze in place as he flinched at the gaze the dragon was giving him. Of course the fear he was expressing were all in his mind, rather his face showed no emotion at all.
The dragon then inched his face closer towards Kuroko's and the boy immediately attempted to take a step back, but he couldn't move due to his fear and could watch as the dragon's face neared him.
"Kuroko! Kuroko!"
Someone was calling his name. Who was it? And why did it sound so familiar?
"Kuroko, wake up!" the voice said again as the dragon began disappearing, light then surrounded the darkness as Kuroko was forced to cover his eyes from the light.
Reality
Kuroko then opened an eye and despite everything being blurry, he could see strands of red hair in front of his face, "Akashi-san?" he called out before his vision becoming much clearer and there he saw the redhead with a worried expression present on her face.
"What's wrong?" Kuroko asked.
"You had a pained look on your face, and no matter how hard I tried, you wouldn't wake up. Are you alright?" Akashi asked with a worried tone.
Kuroko then smiled at her worry.
"Don't worry about it, I'm perfectly fine, thank you for waking me up." Kuroko said in gratitude as Akashi blushed a little.
"I-it's no problem at all." Akashi quickly responded, her cheeks dusted with tints of red as Kuroko realised something.
"Also I have a question." Kuroko said, his face devoid of any emotion.
"W-what is it?"
"Why am I lying on your lap?" Kuroko asked as the blush on Akashi's face quickly intensified.
"W-well you were sleeping on the bench and I thought that it would be more comfortable for you to sleep on my lap, so…" Akashi explained frantically and Kuroko could nod his head in understanding before he decided to get up and flashed a small smile at the girl.
"Thank you, Akashi-san I really appreciate it."
"N-no problem, now let's go and do the test." Akashi said as she grabbed Kuroko by his wrist and started dragging him away to the court.
"Alright." Came the emotionless reply, though there was a hint of amusement in them.
The two then saw Nijimura with a smile on his face as he looked at the two of them.
"The two of you sure took your time. Anyways, I will be the one who will attempt to block out your passes in the test. Shall we begin?" Nijimura asked.
Kuroko and Akashi then looked at each other and nodded their heads.
"Alright let's start." Nijimura said as he, Kuroko and Akashi walked towards the centre if the court.
"You will do 50 chest passes to each other. Each pass to each other will be considered as one." Nijimura said as both Kuroko and Akashi nodded their heads in understanding.
Kuroko then decided to start it off by passing to Akashi, who caught it easily.
Akashi then passed back to the light blue haired boy.
Kuroko held the ball and looked at Nijimura who was looking calm and just standing at one place, unmoving.
"Nijimura-senpai the test had already begun." Kuroko said as Nijimura just waved his hand with a smile on his face.
"I know, don't worry about me." Nijimura said as Kuroko was cautious about the Captain.
Kuroko then passed the ball to Akashi again.
The two first year students passed to each other continuously until they had already reached forty.
'Well guess it's time to start the real test.' Nijimura thought.
As Akashi passes to Kuroko, Nijimura then reached for the ball but his fingers just touched it and Kuroko barely caught the ball.
Both Kuroko and Akashi were shocked at how fast the Captain was.
"Now it's time for me to play seriously. These few more passes that you two are going to make are going to be a whole lot more difficult." Nijimura said seriously but with an excited smirk on his face.
Kuroko and Akashi took note of his words and nodded their heads.
Kuroko then attempted to make a straight pass at his partner but because couldn't due to Nijimura standing directly in front of her. Making the gesture to the left, the boy immediately tossed the ball to the left in which Akashi caught it before passing it back to the bluenette.
'Forty-three, we just need seven more and we're done.' Kuroko thought to himself.
Kuroko then noticed Nijimura in front of him as he attempted to steal the ball, though Kuroko expected this and bounced the ball behind his back and using his left hand, he tossed the ball towards Akashi who caught it easily.
The girl took her time as Nijimura mirrored Kuroko's movements, and the moment she spotted an opportunity, she passed it to the boy.
Kuroko caught the pass easily as Nijimura stood in between them, taking a defensive stance as his eyes locked onto the ball in the bluenette's hands.
Kuroko tried to imitate Akashi in trying to find an opportunity to pass the ball, however, Nijimura began pressuring him with the intent of stopping him. He managed to catch the sight of Akashi making some hand motions and with that he quickly tossed the ball over to the direction she was motioning.
The moment Nijimura turned back towards her Akashi immediately passed the ball towards Kuroko who caught the ball rather easily.
'Looks like I underestimated these two. I knew I should have gone at them after thirty passes.' Nijimura thought to himself as he decided to up his game.
Kuroko then made a fast pass towards Akashi but Nijimura, once again, reached out for the ball, but only managing to clip the ball as Akashi held the ball tightly towards her chest.
Akashi noted that the captain was rather sloppy in his defence whenever she held the ball, but due to it being the second last pass, Akashi feinted to the left before tossing it towards Kuroko from the right.
However, something she did not expected was the fact that Nijimura chased after the ball, and the moment it neared Kuroko, the boy knew he was in trouble.
'If I catch it now, Nijimura-senpai will have the opportunity to steal the ball. What do I do? What?!' Kuroko gritted his teeth.
Deciding to follow his instincts, the bluenette closed his fingers and the moment it was an inch away from him, Kuroko punched the ball towards Akashi, moving at fast speeds.
Despite catching the ball, Akashi, Nijimura and whomever were watching stared at the boy in shock as they wondered to themselves.
How did he managed to pull of the pass?
One might assume, it wouldn't have done much and would merely head to another direction, yet the ball swirled perfectly into the girl's hands, as if it were being controlled.
Kuroko panted slightly once he realised that the test was done and a smile formed on his face when he realised that he and Akashi successfully passed the test. Meanwhile, Nijimura stared at him in utter shock and in slight admiration.
'This kid, how did he manage to pull that off?' Nijimura thought.
Akashi then walked up towards Kuroko with a smile adorning on her face, "We did it Kuroko! We managed to pass the second test!" Akashi exclaimed happily as Kuroko smiled back at her.
"Yes we did, Akashi-san." Kuroko responded with a small smile on his face as well.
"Though, I'm really curious at how you managed to do that pass." Akashi asked as Kuroko looked up as if he'll manage to find an answer by doing so.
"Truth be told, I don't know how I did that pass as well." Kuroko responded which shocked the red haired female.
"But just now you-"
"Like I said I don't know how I did it" Kuroko said cutting off the girl as Akashi sighed, deciding not to push on seeing as he was being truthful about it.
"Alright then, if you say so." Akashi said as she walked away to the bench in order to get her drink.
Kuroko was left all by himself as he looked down at his palm before clenching it tightly, a smile finding its way to his face.
'Two down, just one more test to go!'
