Hey, everybody. It's been a while since I attempted a Harry Potter fanfiction, even though it's one of my favorite fandoms ever, and I've never written more than a few chapters into a Harry Potter fanfiction. However, I figured the time was ripe for another attempt.
Let's get to it.
Chapter 1
Harry sighs as he looks up at the ceiling from his position on his bed. It's been yet again another typical miserable day here at Number 4 Privet Drive. This has been a particularly difficult summer for him even without the annual torture of time spent at his aunt and uncle's, and the time with the Dursley's has made it worse.
The aftermath of the Triwizard Tournament, the death of Cedric Diggory, and the return of Lord Voldemort had had a profound impact on Harry. The traumatic experiences had given him nightmares almost every night, and had left him feeling some fear of Voldemort coming for him. This was made worse by the fact he hadn't heard from his friends all semester, and had only received the very occasional note from Sirius.
Over time, the fear of Voldemort and the trauma from his experienced during the previous school year had eased up. However, now just the anticipation and not knowing about what's happening in the Wizarding world is what's really been bothering him.
Harry shakes his head a bit to try and shake those thoughts out of his head. He's feeling a bit of hunger pains, and thinks it may be worth it to try and head downstairs for a bite to eat. His aunt and uncle are probably watching TV in the sitting room, and from the sounds he heard earlier, Dudley is in his bedroom. Maybe he can sneak some snacks from the kitchen without his aunt and uncle realizing he did.
Harry slowly gets up off the bed and heads for the door. Hedwig chirps a little bit at him, but Harry just gives her a quick glance and smile before refocusing his attention on his quest for food.
Harry opens the door of his bedroom and steps out into the hallway. However, he quickly finds his quest will not be so easy, as his cousin Dudley is waiting for him out in the hall.
"Where are you going, little Potter?" Dudley asks with a smug smirk on his face.
Harry rolls his eyes and says, "None of your business, Dudley. Can you just go watch your TV in your room or something?"
"Well, that's not going anywhere. But messing with you doesn't come as often as it used to," Dudley says with a bigger smirk.
"Dudley, please, just leave me be for tonight," Harry asks in frustration, having lost almost all his patience with Dudley by now.
"Or what, Potter?" Dudley asks, slowly stepping closer to Harry to intimidate him, balling one of his fists.
Harry stands there, not wanting to back down from Dudley. However, before he can do anything, he and Dudley are distracted by something from downstairs. Something that sounds like something breaking. The two look towards the stairs, and then hear two loud thumps like something heavy hitting the floor downstairs twice.
The two are quiet for another moment before Dudley says, "Maybe someone's breaking in?"
"Maybe," Harry says. Nervousness begins to fill him that perhaps his worries about Voldemort coming after him are true after all.
The two boys are quiet for another moment before Harry says quietly, "Follow me. And stay behind me."
Dudley looks offended. "You think you can fight somebody better than I can, cousin?" he demands indignantly.
Harry looks at Dudley. "Dudley," he begins before drawing his wand and continuing, "I have a lot of enemies in my world." Dudley looks at the wand and gulps out loud as he recognizes what Harry means, then he nods.
Harry leads his cousin downstairs, wand at the ready. While it could just be a Muggle break in, Harry doesn't want to take any chances.
They reach the bottom of the stairs and make their way into the kitchen. They move towards the sitting room, and there they stop short. Both Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia are lying on the ground, unconscious.
"What the-?" Harry says before he suddenly hears what sounds like a quick hissing noise, and then the sound of a body hitting the ground.
Harry whips around. Immediately, he sees Dudley lying on the ground, something small sticking out of his back. However, of much more concern are the two men standing in the kitchen who Harry didn't remember seeing there before.
Harry takes a moment to examine them. The two men appear to be in their 30s, most likely. They're wearing dark clothing. Thick black pants, black gloves, black boots, what Harry guesses are Kevlar vests, and black jackets. One is holding what looks like some kind of tiny gun in one hand,
That's all Harry has time to digest before raising his wand and pointing it at the two men, determined to protect himself and, grudgingly, the Dursleys. "I don't know who you are or what you want, but you'd better give me one reason not to waste you," Harry says.
Harry feels reasonably certain by now that these are Muggle burglars given their dress, and is hoping they'll see his wand as some kind of weapon they don't recognize. If not, he begins mentally preparing himself to Obliviate the men.
"There's no need for that, Mr. Potter. We're not here to harm your relatives. We're here for you," one of the men says.
"What? Me?" Harry demands. Then, he narrows his eyes and says, pointing his wand more aggressively, and says, "You're Death Eaters!"
The men smile before they pull up each of their sleeves, showing nothing on their arms. Then, they each reach up to their shoulders and pull off some fabric from their sleeves just below their shoulder joint. Harry squints a bit to see what the men just revealed, and then his eyes widen as he sees what was being covered up by the velcro they just removed. A flag. A series of red white stripes with a blue square in the top left corner.
"Wait…you're Americans," Harry says.
"Yes, we are, Mr. Potter. And we're here because you're in trouble and our government has ordered us to get you to safety," one of the men says.
"Your government?" Harry asks in confusion.
"Yes. Now, if you'd like to stay here to be bait for Lord Voldemort and countless other enemies, we can knock you out like your relatives and drag you with us, but I doubt that would be pleasant," says the other man.
Harry stands there for a few moments, wondering if he should trust these men. He feels a bit uncertain about trusting two men he's just met. However, the first time he's ever had contact with an American of any kind, and they clearly know about Voldemort. Maybe it would be worth it.
Finally, Harry slowly nods. "Okay," he says.
"Good. Let's get upstairs and gather your belongings, and then we'll be off," the first man says.
Harry nods and heads upstairs, the two men accompanying him. As they reach his room, Harry is about to grab some socks off the floor, however, one of the men draws a wand and sweeps it through the air, causing all of his belongings to raise up and go flying into his trunk, which then locks itself.
"Very well," the man says before giving a flick of his wand, at which the trunk and Hedwig's cage, with Hedwig in it, vanish. The man then reaches into his jacket packet and pulls out an old locket.
"A Portkey. Grab hold," he says. Harry hesitates before grabbing hold of it along with the other man. Seconds later, Harry feels a jerk behind his navel and the familiar sensation of being transported by Portkey.
Seconds later, Harry feels himself land on a hard surface. Looking around, he finds that he's in a rather ornate room, filled with a number of Muggle gadgets and computers, as well as several people. However, one person quickly catches harry's eye.
"Sirius!" Harry cries out joyously at the sight of his godfather, and runs to embrace Sirius, who embraces Harry in return with a hearty laugh.
"Where have you been? I've hardly heard anything from you all summer," Harry asks as the two separate.
"A lot has been happening, Harry. But I've been faking working with Dumbledore, while in reality I've been working with these people," Sirius says, gesturing to the other people in the room as he finishes.
Harry looks around. It's then that he notices among the men dressed in Muggle clothing is a tall, dark skinned man, wearing rather fancy Wizarding robes and gold earrings.
The man smiles as he walks forward to greet Harry. "Mr. Potter. My name is Kingsley Shacklebolt. It's an honor to meet you." He extends his hand, which Harry takes.
"Kingsley is one of the best Aurors in Britain, and is the one in charge of the manhunt for me. He and I, however, have been working together with the Americans here to uncover the full scope of the dangerous situation you and all of magical Britain is in," Sirius says.
"What do you mean?" Harry asks in confusion.
Right then, Harry hears footsteps approaching. He turns towards the sound, and sees a man approaching them. He looks to be in his 40s, older than any of the other Americans. He's also wearing different clothing: jeans, a long sleeved blue button up shirt, and a tie.
"Who are you?" Harry asks the man.
"My name is Eric Barton. I'm in command of the Central Intelligence Agency's Harry Potter Task Force," the man replies.
"Harry Potter Task Force?" Harry asks in confusion.
"Why don't we have you sit down and we'll explain," Barton says.
Harry is quiet for a moment before he takes a seat. Sirius and Kingsley take seats to either side of Harry, while Barton pulls up a chair and plunks himself down opposite Harry.
"First of all, Mr. Potter, for most of what I'm about to explain about our efforts, you need to understand something about America. First off, as I'm sure you're wondering, I'm a Muggle, or, as we're also called in America, a No-Maj. In America, from the late 1700s, there was a law known as Rappaport's Law that enforced extreme segregation between the magical and Muggle communities. Nobody in America, even our President, knew about the magical community, for over a century and a half. Wizards and witches were not allowed to marry Muggles, were discouraged from even forming friendships with Muggles, and were to limit contact with Muggles except for contact needed for daily life and to avoid arousing undue suspicion."
"However, in 1965, Rappaport's Law was repealed. At the time, America's Muggle world was being swept by a series of civil rights reforms, which influenced with wizarding world to consider following in their footsteps. At the same time, the Cold War was going on. The Cuban Missile Crisis had occurred in late 1962, bringing America and the Soviet Union to the brink of a shooting war. Tensions remained high between the two, and the US was becoming involved in the Vietnam War. The magical government of America, the Magical Congress of the United States of America, or MACUSA, eventually decided that it was time to repeal Rappaport's Law. Soon after, they established contact with and relations with the President of the United States."
"Before long, the Muggle President and the President of MACUSA came to a consensus that the Muggle and Magical worlds of America needed to work more closely together. They decided that doing so would better help prevent persecution of wizards or of Muggles, help protect Muggles from evil wizards, and help keep the Wizarding World secret. However, of a greater worry was the fear that the Cold War could turn into a shooting war, and the Magical community felt it was necessary to be ready to help protect their country in the event of such a war, especially given such a war was likely to involve nuclear weapons."
"In the 30 years since Rappaport's Law was repealed, the American Muggle and Magical governments have begun to work together more closely than any other country on Earth. More American Muggles know of the Wizarding World than in any other country on Earth. Part of this cooperation has included the creation of joint Magical-Muggle federal agencies. I'm a part of one of them, a special division of the CIA known as the Magical Intelligence Division. We specialize in conducting the same mission in the CIA, but focused almost entirely in the wizarding world. There are several others, including a branch of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement that works together with the American FBI to handle cases that border the two worlds, a branch of the Department of Education that also oversees magical education in America, a branch of the Department of Commerce that oversees magical commerce, and the Department of the Treasury extending their reach into the magical world. They also established the Magical Weapons Research Program, which was originally formed to discover magical defenses against nuclear attack, but now focuses on the research and development of Muggle weapons crossed with magic."
"Really?" Harry asks in surprise. He pauses for a moment, then asks, "Who all in America knows about the magical world?"
"The President, obviously. Then, not counting those part of the joint operations, programs, and federal agencies, the list also includes the Vice President, all of the President's Cabinet, the Secret Service, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, other military leaders, the leaders of the FBI, CIA, NSA and other similar agencies, and the members of the Supreme Court, just to name a few. Overall, there are probably thousands of Muggles in America who are aware of the magical world," Barton explains.
Barton pauses for a moment, then says, "Well, I think that's enough of an explanation. Now, let's get to the topic at hand."
"As you know, Muggle Britain and America have been allies for a very long time. Their magical governments haven't been as close, but they still maintain good relations. During the war with Voldemort years ago, America dispatched wizards and witches, primarily Aurors, to Britain to help fight Voldemort. This was for two reasons. One, they didn't want Britain subjected to Voldemort's evil. Two, we had intelligence that Voldemort didn't intend to rule only Britain, and that his planned second conquest was America. When Voldemort was vanquished, we pulled our forces back to America. However, there were too many within MACUSA who believed Voldemort was not permanently vanquished."
"Over the years since, the CIA-MID maintained spies in Britain, keeping an eye on happenings in Magical Britain and listening for word about Voldemort or about you. To our concern, we could find no sign of you, and that concerned us. As we looked into why, we learned something from a contact of ours who is now connected to you, who we will reveal later, and from that, we began to grow suspicious of Albus Dumbledore."
"Dumbledore? Why Dumbledore?" Harry asks in confusion. At the same time, he sees a look of almost anger on Sirius' face.
"Harry, Dumbledore is not who you think he is," Sirius says.
"What do you mean?" Harry asks.
Barton smiles a bit. "The CIA has learned the story of Albus Dumbledore. When he was a teenager, Dumbledore was best friends with Gellert Grindelwald. Together, the two laid plans to a revolution. A revolution that would one day lead wizards out of hiding and to rule over Muggles. They held their motto of 'For the Greater Good', for they believed their plan was for the greater good of both wizards and Muggles."
"Over time, the two grew apart. We believe it is because Dumbledore saw Grindelwald as having become too radical and having deviated from their original plan. That is what led them to be at odds, and eventually led to Dumbledore defeating Grindelwald and putting him in prison. However, Dumbledore never lost his goals. He has waited for decades to bring about his plans, and now he is ready."
"Now, to understand how this applies to you, you need to understand your family history, Harry," Sirius takes over, "Since their earliest days thousands of years ago, the Potter family has been perhaps the wealthiest and most powerful wizarding family in the world. Add to the fact that by now, you are descended not only from the Potters but also several other ancient and powerful wizarding families, your heritage is that of great power. You are the only heir of the Potter family. Which means all of their wealth and property belongs to you."
Harry sits there in shock. He had known his parents were wealthy, for sure, but he hadn't known they were this wealthy. Finally, he asks, "Why didn't I know this?"
"The vault Hagrid took you to before your first year was set aside to be your vault throughout school, while the rest of your wealth was to be transferred into your control later on," Sirius explains.
"Now, here's how Dumbledore connects. Despite his grand plans, and the great image he possesses in the wizarding world, Dumbledore needs an army to accomplish his goals. For that, he needs money. He's been trying to use your family's funds to gather and train an army. The reason he can do this at all is because after Sirius here was imprisoned, he appointed himself your magical guardian. However, that position only allows him to withdraw very small amounts of money from your vaults. In order for him to access all of it, he either needs you on his side or for you to die," Barton says.
Harry's eyes widen in shock, stunned by this revelation. Sirius now takes over as he says, "He has raised an organization he claims is meant to fight Voldemort called the Order of the Phoenix. While most of its members actually know its real purpose, its to help conceal Dumbledore's true motives, and also to help clear Voldemort out of the way as a threat. However, some members are in on Dumbledore's plot. Among them are the Weasleys."
Harry about falls out of his chair, stunned by that. His mind races, trying to comprehend what he just heard. After years of being best friends with Ron and the Weasleys being so friendly to him…he can't believe that they are secretly against him.
"Their plan involves Ginny Weasley winning you over, with love potions if necessary, and getting you into a position where Dumbledore can force you to swear loyalty to him so that he can use your money. If that doesn't work, then we think he plans to lead you against Voldemort to destroy him, and then have you killed so he can access your money. All of the Weasley family is against you except for Bill Weasley and the twins."
Everyone is quiet for a few moments before Barton says, "Here's the deal. The Harry Potter Task Force was formed several years ago to keep an eye on you, monitor Dumbledore and his efforts to claim your fortune, develop intelligence on Voldemort and how to kill him for good, and prepare a force to help you fight against both Dumbledore and Voldemort. Now, we have another problem. Your claims that Voldemort has returned have turned the Ministry against you. Cornelius Fudge is terrified of the thought of facing the chaos of Voldemort at large, and is convincing himself that you are lying and that you and Dumbledore are plotting against him. Most of the Ministry is on his side. So, we now have three enemies to face."
"Why did you come for me?" Harry asks.
"Because. We have intelligence from a highly placed source in the British Ministry that someone else even higher is plotting to make a move against you in the near future. Even if that's not true, we believe that Fudge's paranoia may soon reach a level where we will attempt to arrest you on a trumped up charge to ease his worry. In addition, we also believe Dumbledore will soon begin his plan to convert you. We knew it was time to get you out," Barton says.
Harry is quiet, his mind still racing a million miles an hour, trying to process everything he's just learned. Finally, he asks, "So, what now? What are you going to do with me?"
"First, we have someone else to retrieve. Your friend, Hermione Granger, is not aware of Dumbledore's plot, nor is she part of it, we believe. We do not want her caught up in Dumbledore's web, and we believe she could be an important ally for us and for you personally. We will soon be paying a visit to her and her parents to extract them, after which we will retreat back to the United States. Once we are back in the States, then we will introduce you to some other important people you will have to know. Then, we will start preparing you for the fights ahead," Barton says confidently.
Harry is quiet for a few long moments, processing everything while noticing that Barton, Sirius, and Kingsley are all staring at him. Finally, he says, "Alright. Let's do it."
And, I'll end there. Hope this wasn't a bad first chapter.
Next chapter will be up in a week or so. Until then, please leave a review and stay tuned.
