Chapter 1
It had been weeks since Elliot had last heard from his younger brother, Joey. Olivia could tell that it was eating him up inside but there was nothing that they could do. Joey had to be incredibly careful before sending a message and if he and his boss were bopping around Europe, that would be hard to do.
"Hey Liv," Fin's voice broke into her thoughts. He was standing at her office door.
"We have a case?" She asked.
"It'd probably be too much to ask to not have one," Fin said.
"One day, Fin, but I guess not today. What do you want – the crime scene or the hospital?" Olivia wanted to know.
"You better take the hospital," there was a look on his face and immediately she could place it.
"Who is the victim?" She asked her Sergeant.
"Detective Klass called me. She's afraid she's too close to this," Fin said, handing her a note he took down. Immediately, Olivia's thoughts went to the Queens detective's former partner's mother, Carol. Her stomach dropped.
"Her neighbor?" The Captain was partially relieved that the elderly woman was ok but felt bad for this woman in the hospital. That's when she heard her phone chirp. She grabbed it off the desk and looked at the text message. It was from the aforementioned detective. Please Captain Benson. I need your help, it read.
"All right – go to the crime scene, take Bruno and Velasco. Is Detective Klass down at the hospital?" Olivia asked.
"Yes, her neighbor is in a bad way," Fin said. Olivia nodded and they quickly split up. Fin went out and got Bruno and Velasco on the move while she quickly texted the Queens detective back – I'm on my way.
Olivia made her way down the hospital hallways until she found the room that the nurse had directed her to. She was met at the door by Betty, which made her wonder how bad this was. The dog seemed to lead her back into the room.
"Captain Benson, this is my neighbor, Akiko. She lives across the hall from me and often takes Betty on her walks when she stays home," Detective Klass said of the unconscious woman in the hospital bed. Now, Olivia understood why she'd be concerned about being too close to this.
"What do the doctor's say?" Olivia asked.
"She was bashed over the head with something and dragged into an alley. A homeless guy found her sometime later and flagged down a patrol car," Amanda swallowed hard.
"She was assaulted?" The implication was there as to what kind of assault.
"The doctors think that she won't be able to have children," Amanda told her. Olivia grabbed her shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
"She's lucky to have you in her corner," the Captain said.
"I'm not so sure about that," Amanda said, opening her phone. She showed Olivia a picture. Someone had scrawled a message in red spray paint on a wall – You're next Detective.
"Where was this message?" Olivia wanted to know.
"On the living room wall of Akiko's apartment," Amanda told her.
