MexBel: La Catrina

Rosa smiled, looking around. It was the Day of the Dead, and the eight-year-old was searching for her friend. She knew that La Catrina enjoyed this night, and they always made sure to meet each other on this night.

She saw who she was looking for and ran closer, smiling brightly. La Carina saw her as well and stooped down to her level.

"Rosa," the skeletal woman said. "How are you?"

Ever since Rosa could remember, she had been able to see La Catrina. She was the only one. La Catrina, for her part, was interested by the fact that a little girl was able to see her, despite not being about to die. She would usually come to speak to Rosa. The little girl supposed that Death was lonely.

It wasn't just on the Day of the Dead, either. Rosa could always see La Catrina. But she was a bit too young to properly understand what La Catrina's presence meant. She just saw her as a friend, and not something to fear.

"Please, wake up," Rosa muttered.

The twenty-year-old was sitting next to the hospital bed, clutching the hand of the Belgian laying there. The two of them had been in an accident a little while ago, and while Rosa had gotten off lightly, Bella was seriously injured. A piece of the window had embedded itself in her chest, and she had received a hard hit to the head, among other things. The doctors tried their best, but they had no hope of Bella waking up. If she didn't wake up soon, then… Rosa could lose her. Permanently.

There was movement out of the corner of her eye, and she swiftly turned to see what it was. Her eyes widened when she saw who it was.

"Catrina?" she whispered. "No…"

"Rosa?" La Catrina questioned, before looking at the hand clasping the hand of the blonde. "Is she…?"

"Please," Rosa begged. "You can't be here. Not for her. Please."

La Catrina sighed.

"I'm sorry, Rosa," La Catrina said. "I have to take her. She won't wake up, and if she does, then she won't remember you."

"But… I love her!" Rosa shouted.

"I know, Rosa. I'll… I'll give you some time to say goodbye. But we have to go."

Tears had started streaming down Rosa's face, and she turned to Bella. The Belgian was extremely pale, and her breathing was laboured. Rosa closed her eyes, before she placed her lips on Bella's.

"I love you," she whispered.

La Catrina sighed, before placing her hand atop Bella's forehead. Rosa's eyes watered as Bella's breathing stopped, but she was momentarily surprised to see a butterfly emerging from Bella's forehead. The butterfly fluttered in front of Rosa, resting for a moment on her lips, before fluttering to La Catrina, resting on her shoulder.

"We'll see you on Dia de los Muertos," La Catrina said.

La Catrina disappeared, and Rosa absently placed her hand on her lips before looking down at Bella. She smiled sadly.

"I'll see you soon," she said.

The prompt is: 'Since person A was young they've been able to see Death/The Grim Reaper, said Death has always thought it was funny that a kid could see him so they talk when the chance comes. Person B is sick and Person A is worried about them and one day Death comes by and is like "Yo Dude, wait this is your friend/significant other. Man, now I feel kinda bad. Oh, I'll give you some time to say goodbye. But rules are rules. K see ya later." Then Person A has to say goodbye to Person B.'

I chose Mexico because of the Mexico Snaps comics, where that version of Mexico is friends with Death (kind of like Russia and General Winter). Also, one of the things on my bucket list is to go to Mexico during Dia de los Muertos. Other things I want to experience is Rio during Carnival and Iceland during my birthday (since Iceland and I share the same birthday).

Also, I've started a poll for my multichapters. So, if there are specific stories you'd like to see, go vote.
