EgyBul: Am I Just Imaginary?
Dimitri laughed as he played with Gupta, a game of tag in Dimitri's backyard. At five years old, the two of them were best friends. They were inseparable.
"Dimitri, time for lunch," his mother called.
"Can Gupta come too?" Dimitri asked.
His mother smiled strangely.
"Of course," she said.
As Dimitri and Gupta ran inside, Dimitri failed to notice his mother's worried look.
…
Gupta watched the sleeping Dimitri, no longer in his child-like form. He was this child's guardian angel, and he cared for him more than he should have.
Dimitri was the only one who could see, hear, or touch him. And he hated the worried looks that Dimitri's mother would show her son. He knew what happened to those who could see things others couldn't. Those thought to be insane. He didn't want that to happen to Dimitri.
…
Dimitri slammed the front door closed, tears stinging his eyes. The nine-year-old ran towards his room, ignoring the frantic pounding on the door.
"Dimitri, please, open up!" Gupta shouted.
"Go away!" Dimitri shouted. "You're not real!"
He had been forced to acknowledge the fact that his best friend was an imaginary friend. After so many teachers had spoken to him about it, after his parents had, and after the other children teased him, calling him a big baby. Gupta wasn't real. He never was.
Dimitri curled up, ignoring the sounds at the front door. He didn't move until his mother returned home, and the two of them went out for ice-cream after he told her why he was crying.
…
Dimitri was staring at a scene from his childhood. He knew that he was dreaming. There was no other reason for it.
The twelve-year-old stared at his former friend. The one that he had imagined. He found it a bit hard to believe that it had all been his imagination, but the fact that he hadn't seen Gupta again proved that he wasn't real.
"But I am real," someone said behind him.
Dimitri looked behind him, seeing someone his own age, who looked to be an older version of Gupta. There were tears in his eyes.
"Go away," Dimitri said. "I don't believe in fairy tales."
…
Dimitri awoke, feeling something wet on his cheeks. He rubbed at his eyes, seeing that he was crying. He had been reminded of his times with Gupta, and the knowledge that they weren't real only made him feel sad.
…
Gupta bit his lip in frustration as he watched Dimitri get pushed around by his classmates. He wanted to step in, but didn't know if he could. If Dimitri saw him again – even if it was just to comfort him in his dreams, then it might just push him closer to the edge.
To Dimitri, he was nothing more than a distant childhood memory.
…
Sixteen-year-old Dimitri returned home with a sigh. He was feeling very tired. Tired of everything.
The schoolyear was hard on him, and to top it off, he'd been suffering from depression. The bullying he would occasionally endure, along with his dad being very sick, didn't do wonders for his psyche. He was stressed, and despite his hard work, his grades kept slipping, which added to the stress.
He sat down at his desk and pulled out his Geography textbook. They had a test the following day, and Geography wasn't his best subject.
After an hour and nothing sinking in, Dimitri broke down, sobbing at the thought of failing yet another test. Disappointing his parents. Being held back a year. Being called stupid by his classmates.
Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and he jumped in surprise. He turned to the person standing there and widened his eyes, seeing the white-feathered wings behind him.
"Am I still just an imaginary friend?" the person asked.
Dimitri's eyes widened. For a moment, he remembered his childhood playmate. The one that didn't exist. And then he recognised the new kid in school. The one that had been trying to make friends with him. And the name… the name of both of these…
"Gupta?" Dimitri whispered.
Gupta smiled, before he placed a soft kiss on Dimitri's head.
"I'm your guardian angel," Gupta said. "I was never part of your imagination."
The prompt is: 'Person A is Person B's guardian angel. As kids, they used to look out for each other and be best friends, but only B could see them and feel them. As B grows older, they believe A really was just a stupid imaginary friend and A is so upset, because they've been watching over B. One night A starts appearing in B's dreams in tears, pleading them to please believe in them again, but B doesn't believe it, saying to them "I don't believe in fairy tales." Cut to a few years later, B's junior year of high school is getting rough, whether it's mental issues, losing friends, home life, etc. As B's trying to study and breaks down, they feel a hand on their shoulder and look up to see Person A, wings and all, whispering "Am I still an imaginary friend now?" And then Person B realizes; Person A was the same person who was the "new kid" in their high school, and they had become friends.'
