BelTai: Lipstick

Mei applied her lipstick, ready for a night out with her girlfriend. Bella would come pick her up at any time. She placed the light pink lipstick in her purse, and right on cue, she heard someone knock on the door.

When she opened the door for Bella, she immediately noticed the stunning red lips. Mei suddenly felt like a child. Pink was a child's colour, while red was the colour of an adult.

"Wow," Bella said. "You look pretty. So, shall we go?"

Mei nodded her head, trying to hide her discomfort, and closed the door behind her.

"Is something wrong?" Bella asked.

The two were having dinner at a restaurant, and Bella had noticed that Mei seemed rather quiet. Considering how bubbly she usually was, it was alarming.

"No," Mei said, forcing a smile on her face. "It's nothing."

"Mei…" Bella began.

"Seriously, it's nothing. It's stupid."

"If it's upsetting you, then it's not stupid. Please, tell me what's going on."

Mei hesitated for a moment, before she sighed, averting her eyes.

"I feel like such a child," she admitted.

"Why?" Bella asked.

"Well… Red is so mature, while pink is…"

It took Bella a few seconds to understand what Mei was saying, and she burst out laughing.

"It's not funny," Mei snapped, blushing in embarrassment.

"Sorry," Bella said, calming down. "It's just… You look cute."

"But I don't want to look cute."

"Mei… Tell me, have you ever tried wearing red lipstick?"

"Um, well…"

"There's no guarantee that you'll look good in it," Bella said. "Just like how I don't look good when I wear light colours. They make me look sick. If it works for you, then go for it."

Mei gave a small smile.

After their date, Bella returned Mei to her apartment, but not without kissing her goodnight. When she pulled away, she couldn't help but giggle.

"What's so funny?" Mei asked in confusion.

"Our lipsticks blended," Bella said. "And no offence, but you should stick to the lighter colours."

Mei glanced towards Bella's lips and smirked.

"And you were right," she said. "Light shades do make you look sick."

This is my sister and I in a nutshell. I wear dark colours, while she prefers pale pinks and nudes. Of course, it's because we can't wear lipstick otherwise. Dark shades make her look washed out, while light shades make me look as though I'm about to pass out. Her lips are also naturally lighter than mine. Actually, I once got a dark pink lipstick – the darkest available – and was a bit dismayed to see that it's my exact shade. The only difference is that the lipstick adds a bit of shine.
