PortMac: Colonial Friendship

Portugal smiled when the ship finally reached the port. He had been travelling for several months, and he was pleased to be able to disembark. Especially since he was visiting his favourite colony.

It was strange. Portugal had many colonies, many of whom he was raising himself, like Brazil. But still, Macau was his favourite. Perhaps it was because Macau wasn't one of his adoptive children, so to speak. And it might also have something to do with the fact that they were friends before Macau became his colony.

Speaking of which, he could see Macau before the ship even came to a stop. He smiled when he saw the Asian, and after getting the bag filled with his belongings, he went down the gangplank to go to Macau. He knew that the other nation wouldn't move closer, but the fact that he came at all told Portugal that he was at least welcome.

"Chio, how are you?" Portugal greeted, holding out his hand to the Asian.

Macau looked at the hand for a moment before he accepted it. Portugal didn't take it personally; Macau was still getting used to the Western greeting. In fact, he wondered if Macau would greet anyone except Portugal in that way.

"Miguel, I'm doing well," Macau said. "And I hope the same is true for you."

Portugal smiled.

"If it was going poorly, I probably wouldn't be here," Portugal said. "No wars that need my attention, no foolish brothers acting annoying…"

Macau chuckled.

"I'm pleased to hear it," he said. "Come on, then."

Portugal followed Macau as they made their way to the latter's house. Before they could do anything, Portugal needed to drop off his belongings. And he hoped that Macau had lunch prepared for him, because it's been a while since Portugal had proper food.

The moment they entered Macau's home, he knew that the other nation didn't disappoint.

"That smells heavenly," Portugal said, a sigh stowing away on his words.

Macau chuckled.

"I figured you'd appreciate a home-cooked meal after spending so much time at sea," Macau said. "Besides, most of the entertainment takes place at night."

Portugal smiled, before heading towards the designated guestroom. He had spent a lot of time here in the past, and he wondered if other people also used this room. For some reason, that thought made him feel uncomfortable.

He took the time to freshen up, and when he was done, he made his way to the dining area, where Macau was already setting the plates.

"Can I help with anything?" Portugal asked.

"Nonsense," Macau said. "You're my guest. It wouldn't be proper manners if I let you help me."

"And it wouldn't be right of me to take advantage of your hospitality."

Macau chuckled.

"We'll be going back and forth like this unless one of us gives in," he said. "…Alright. Could you perhaps set the cutlery? I'm still a bit disoriented by the Western rules."

Portugal nodded his head, before fetching the cutlery. He set them on the table, smiling in satisfaction after having won their little battle.

The two sat down to eat, and Portugal had to sigh in relief. One thing that made him grateful to China was that he managed to teach Macau how to cook. Portugal was decent, but teaching was tricky business. Macau tried to make Western dishes – particularly Portuguese dishes – for Portugal's sake, but Portugal could still taste the Eastern influence. That was fine. It just gave the food an interesting flavour.

"How is it?" Macau asked nervously.

"It's excellent," Portugal said. "Though, there's something I've been curious about."

"And what would that be?"

"I'd like you to prepare one of your more traditional dishes."

Macau looked surprised, but he smiled.

"Alright then," he said. "I hope you're prepared."

Portugal couldn't help but chuckle at that.

After lunch, Macau showed Portugal around the city to show him how things had changed since the last time he'd been there. Portugal smiled when he saw everything, and he also smiled at the enthusiasm Macau displayed while showing him around.

"I'm impressed by all you've accomplished since the last time I visited," Portugal said. "I'm sorry that it can't be more often."

"I understand. You have an empire to run. Colonies to visit. Domestic issues that would need your attention. I'm just pleased you come when you can."

Portugal sighed, but it was all true. The humans might have enjoyed being part of an empire, but for the nations it was a lot of work. They had to make sure the humans were doing their jobs, and they had to make sure that everything was still fine with the nations under their control. This was especially true for nations that were still children, as they still needed to learn everything. In these cases, Portugal had to stay a bit longer to teach the children.

"When was the last time you did something for fun?" Macau asked, concerned.

Portugal chuckled wryly.

"It's been a while," he admitted. "I think it was the last time I came to visit."

Macau clicked his tongue in disapproval.

"We need to remedy that," he said.

Portugal chuckled. He had no doubt that Macau would try to fix this issue.

Macau had been right with the entertainment being at night. As it turned out, he had planned on taking Portugal to the theatre, and he was impressed by the fact that it combined their two languages. Even though Portugal couldn't understand everything, he understood enough to find the play interesting.

Afterwards, Macau had showed him the city by night. It made a huge difference, and Portugal couldn't help but smile. It was truly a magical experience.

The two returned home, and Macau surprised Portugal by bringing out some wine.

"I didn't expect you to have wine ready," Portugal said.

"Well, I figured I'd make your stay as comfortable as possible," Macau said. "And I've also been interested in trying new things. I figured that this is a good time for it."

Portugal smirked, and the two started out by sampling the wine, continuing their conversation from the entire day. Mostly recounting what they each had been doing since the last time they came together, complaining about their bosses, complaining about their family members, complaining about rival nations, discussing plans for the future…

As they spoke, the wine's level continued to drop, and eventually Portugal leaned backwards, his face flushed.

"I can't remember the last time I've been so relaxed," Portugal said. "Maybe that's why you're my favourite colony."

Macau paused, and he lowered his glass.

"Favourite colony, you say?" he repeated.

Portugal blinked drunkenly, before turning to regard Macau.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"…Tell me something," Macau said. "Am I just a colony to you?"

Portugal blinked a few more times before he smiled.

"You're also my dear friend," he said.

Macau sighed.

"Nothing more?" he asked.

Portugal was confused now, and he was sure that it wasn't just the wine talking.

"What more do you want to be?" he asked.

Macau shook his head, and he took a last swig of his wine. What he then did completely surprised Portugal. He moved closer, and before Portugal understood what was going on, Macau's lips were pressed against his.

Portugal still held his breath when Macau pulled away. The Asian sighed, averting his eyes.

"I want to be more than just your friend or colony," he admitted, before he stood.

Portugal watched him walking away, leaving him confused about what had happened. Or why he wanted Macau's lips on his own again.
