WaPol: Dragon and Phoenix

The moment Will entered the lecture hall, he proceeded to sample the scents around him. He could find it so frustrating sometimes to be surrounded by nothing but humans, especially if he was in a particularly foul mood and hungry.

He just needed to know that there was someone – or something – other than human here as well.

The moment his senses perceived the scent of fire and smoke, his eyes started to scan the people around him. One of them was a creature of fire – ideal for a dragon like him. He knew that he was in good company.

Finally, he spotted him. A blond with green eyes, surrounded by a faint aura that humans couldn't see. The young man was staring at him sharply, no doubt being able to see what Will could see. The dragon smiled, before he made his way towards the other.

"Is this seat taken?" Will asked.

The other smirked, before shaking his head. Will sat down next to him.

"I'm Will Kirkland," he introduced. "Dragon."

"Feliks Łukasiewicz," the other said. "Phoenix."

Will's eyes widened in surprise. Phoenixes were rare, and among their community were considered good luck.

"I thought you were immortal," Will said. "Why would a phoenix want to be at a university?"

As far as Will knew, phoenixes had no reason to fear death, and humans weren't their prey. So, he couldn't see how Feiks would want to be there.

Feliks chuckled.

"We enjoy knowledge," he said. "And that's why I'm here. Like, I now know that dragons don't think that we would enjoy learning."

Will shook his head, an amused smile on his face. It would seem the phoenix enjoyed joking. He had a feeling that he and Feliks would get along swimmingly.

This is actually a concept I have for a novel: Magical creatures survive disguised as humans. Those that prey on humans get easy prey, and those that are more passive get to hide from the most aggressive and dangerous creature (i.e. humans). One of the main characters is a dragon who goes to university (because a lot of these creatures actually enjoy knowledge, and the dragon is still young, so he needs to learn about the world he needs to survive in). He encounters a phoenix, who has no idea that she's a phoenix. Phoenixes are rare, and it's as though they've been disappearing. He starts to investigate, and once he convinces the phoenix of her true nature, she joins him. They uncover a plot of apocalyptic proportions that involves the murder of the phoenixes, and the one responsible is also responsible for her amnesia.
