KorTai: Long Distance
"…And then Leon managed to blow up the stew," Mei recounted.
She was engaging in a Skype call with her boyfriend, Yong Soo. Lockdown had been bad for both of them, since they had no idea when they would see each other again. And lockdown had already been extended.
She yelped when the bedroom door was thrown open, and she turned to see her brother, Yao, standing there with his arms crossed.
"How long are you going to take up the wi-fi?" he demanded. "Some of us have other things to do too, you know? You're slowing everything down."
"Come on!" Yong Soo whined. "We haven't seen each other in a long time. Have some mercy."
"Yeah!" Mei exclaimed. "Come on, show some humanity!"
"…Tell me, how long have you been calling each other?" Yao asked.
Mei quickly checked the timer on the screen and winced at the number.
"Um… Two hours," she said.
"Exactly," Yao said. "I know that you miss each other, but for now, it's time to say goodbye."
Mei sighed, before she said goodbye to Yong Soo. They made arrangements to call each other again in three days, so she would just have to wait until then.
The worst part about this lockdown for my sister is that she's separated from her boyfriend, and they've had calls – Skype and otherwise – that lasted about two hours. It doesn't help that the lockdown's been extended until the end of the month. But yeah, she is not happy with any of this. First, she missed her graduation ceremony (the date was literally the first day of lockdown). And now, with the extended lockdown, her birthday is in trouble, since it's two days after lockdown ends, plus it's the day after a public holiday. We have a bit of trouble just figuring out how to buy gifts for her, and we have no idea whether or not the rest of the family would be able to come.
