AmeChu: Antibiotics

"You need to drink your medicine," Yao insisted.

"No way!" Alfred said. "Those pills you got for me… Don't you know what those are? Those are banana-flavoured numbness! No. You can't make me."

Yao sighed.

"Fine then," he said. "I hope you enjoy being sick."

Alfred glared at him, before taking the box of pills. Yao smiled in satisfaction. At least Alfred would be getting better soon.

Months later, Yao also got sick, and he was prescribed the same antibiotics that Alfred had been. The moment Alfred saw the box, he started laughing uncontrollably.

"What's so funny?" Yao demanded.

"You've got the banana-flavoured numbness!" Alfred managed to say between his laughter.

Yao huffed, before he popped the pill into his mouth.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said. "It doesn't taste like bananas at all."

Yao really wanted to wipe that smug look off the American's face.

That evening Yao was searching the cabinets. Alfred stood in the kitchen archway, watching as Yao kept eating different things of varying flavours.

"Let me guess," Alfred said. "You can't get rid of that aftertaste?"

Yao glared at Alfred, before huffing.

"I can understand what you mean now," he said. "Sorry. So, how do I get rid of the taste of… banana-flavoured numbness?"

Alfred chuckled.

"You can't," he said. "Not until the day after the last pill is finished."

Yao groaned in frustration.

When I was in high school and got sick, I would usually get a prescription for these antibiotic pills that had a banana aftertaste which kicked in a few minutes after drinking it, which also made your mouth feel numb. When I say 'banana-flavoured numbness', that is the only way to describe both the feeling and the taste. And it gets worse. You can't get rid of the taste, and it lasts for about twelve hours – just in time for the next dose. You're stuck with the taste for the majority of a week. It's not fun. And when I was in university, my mom also got the same prescription – to my great amusement. I was just about to go to sleep when my mom sent me a text to say that she understood what I was saying about those pills. Sleep had to wait a few minutes for me to finish laughing.
