BulMex: Follow the Music

Dimitri glanced at the alarm clock, before snuggling deeper into the sheets. It was his day off, and he had no intention of getting up at this point in time. He had to be at the campus early on all of the other days of the week. This day… this day was just for him.

He didn't know how much time had passed, but eventually he heard something… familiar. It was always an issue that his neighbours didn't know the meaning of volume control when it came to music, but this time… Was it really…?

It sounded like the song they'd done in his Spanish class the previous day. He had listened to it a few times on YouTube afterwards because he really liked the song. And one of his neighbours was listening to it?

He quickly jumped out of bed and started to get dressed. He needed to investigate. As soon as he was ready, he flew out the door and perked his ears.

It sounded like it was coming from the next flat.

He quickly closed the gate, his keys firmly in his pocket, as he approached his neighbour's flat. The gate was shut, but the door open, probably to let in fresh air. He stopped when he saw a girl about his age working at her desk with the music playing.

She seemed to sense his presence, for she turned to him with a frown.

"May I help you?" she asked.

Dimitri blushed when he realised the awkward situation, and he scratched his head.

"S-sorry," he stammered. "It's just… I recognise that song from my Spanish class, and I was wondering… who was playing it. I mean… considering the stuff that everyone usually plays and… um…"

She smiled.

"You were hoping that it was someone from your Spanish class, correct?" she asked.

He nodded his head. It might have been that, but…

"Io soy Rosa," she said.

Dimitri jumped, and it took him a moment to realise that she was introducing herself.

"Um, i-io soy Dimitri," he shakily replied.

She giggled and nodded her head.

"Not too bad," she said. "A bit shaky, though. So, you're taking Spanish? If you want, I can help you out."

He perked up. Now that she mentioned it, Dimitri could hear that she had a Spanish accent. He grinned.

"Thank you," he said. "Um, gracias!"

This was based on an experience in my first year of French. It was my day off when I heard a song we recently did in French. I went investigating, and it turned out that my neighbour was friends with one of my classmates, who told him about this song. One of the reasons why I investigated was because I usually only heard kwaito at the apartment complex, so I was pleasantly surprised. The guy was probably the only neighbour I frequently spoke to (asides from the high school classmates that moved in at the same complex). Well, we formed a sort-of friendship, and he was continuously urging me to learn Zulu (I was already learning two languages at that time, and found that a third wasn't in the cards, plus it's hard to find resources for the Zulu language).

Also, my neighbours made sure that I would never like kwaito. Kind of like how they made sure I would hate Katy Perry's Roar (three in the morning, exam in a few hours, drunk neighbours playing it at max volume while singing at the top of their lungs… yeah…). It was also during my university years that I grew to love metal (except I'm more polite than my neighbours, and had decent earphones). Point is, it was a great way to drown out the unwanted noise.

Rosa deliberately introduced herself in a way that Dimitri would understand, so before any Spanish-speakers chew me out for saying it wrong, it was deliberate. Also, Spanish is the Romance language that I haven't attempted to learn yet, so it's the one I'm not familiar with. I can understand if it's written, though, due to my knowledge of its sister languages filling in the gaps for me.
