ChuSwiss: Date Denied
Vash got out of the shower. It was still an hour before he and Yao would be going on a date, but the sooner he was ready, the better.
As he got dressed, he noticed that a message had come from Yao ten minutes prior. He quickly checked it and his stomach decided to go skydiving.
I can't go out tonight. I'm sorry.
Just that. Yao couldn't even call him to make an excuse. He should have known that a simple text wouldn't suffice. He quickly dialled Yao, though the other male refused to answer. A second time. A third time.
Feeling frustrated, he quickly got dressed. He was going to find out from Yao what the deal was. Why couldn't he go out, and why wasn't he answering? Was there someone else? Did Yao decide to break up with him?
He was a bit of a control freak, that he would admit, and he sometimes had a habit of jumping to conclusions. But if he called three times and there was no answer, then he had a right to be worried!
It wasn't long before he was standing in front of Yao's apartment door, banging and demanding that Yao answer. He was just about to call him again when he heard someone behind him.
"Vash?"
He whirled around to see Kiku, Yao's roommate. Vash took a deep, calming breath.
"Where's Yao?" he demanded. "He's not answering my calls."
Kiku's face fell.
"Didn't he tell you?" he asked.
"I got a text saying he can't go on our date tonight," Vash said. "But he won't answer my calls. I want to know why."
"Yao's in the hospital."
Vash paused.
"What?" he asked.
"Yao came down with a bad case of pneumonia," Kiku said. "He completely lost his voice. The doctor's keeping him at the hospital for the next few days, and if it gets worse, he'll have to go to ICU."
Vash swallowed thickly.
"Could… Could I see him?" he asked.
"You can come with me," Kiku said. "I actually just came to get some of Yao's things. We only found out that he'd be staying at the hospital an hour ago, and with all the arrangements…"
That would explain the hasty text. Yao was busy being admitted in the hospital, and he didn't have time to go into more detail.
"I would appreciate it," Vash said.
…
Yao stared at the screen of his phone. Vash had already called him three times, no doubt to demand why he was cancelling their date. He was too busy earlier to answer the calls, and besides, he didn't have a voice. He couldn't call back, and a text to explain the situation… How would he even do that?
He looked up when someone entered. He first noticed Kiku, carrying an overnight bag. But his attention then drifted to the blond man behind him.
"Yao…" Vash muttered.
"V-Vash," Yao croaked, before erupting into a coughing fit.
"Easy," Vash said as he came forward to stroke his back. "Why didn't you tell me that you were sick? Even in a text, I would have understood. And why did you wait for it to get so bad?"
Yao helplessly looked towards Kiku, who sighed.
"He didn't want to disappoint you," Kiku said.
"Idiot," Vash chided. "Is there something I should get for you?"
Yao smiled, before taking Vash's hand to squeeze it. Honestly, it was the only thing he wanted from the other right now. He just wanted Vash to be there with him.
I once had the misfortune of getting pneumonia with the Swine Flu panic. They kept me a bit longer to make sure it's just pneumonia. And another time, I got it so bad that my voice completely gave up on me. Even whispering was out of the question. Well, at least my teachers didn't ask me any questions during that time.
Considering it's winter now, and my tendency to get pneumonia, and the pandemic, and that someone local tested positive… I am not in the mood to get sick. I do not want to spend any time in quarantine while they try to determine what the cause of my sickness is, only for it to be something like pneumonia.
