IceLat: Ski Trip

"Okay, do you got it?" Eduard asked.

Raivis nervously nodded. He and his brothers had finally managed to save up enough to go to a ski resort. Toris and Eduard had gone to such places before, courtesy of school trips, and when it was Raivis's turn for a trip like that, he managed to come down with a serious cold.

And this was the first time he went skiing. He was nervous, and he had a hard time balancing on the two pieces of wood.

"I think so," Raivis said.

"Remember," Toris said, "take it nice and slow. Don't rush things, and don't be too eager."

Raivis nodded. The other two stepped back, and Raivis looked around nervously.

"Good luck," Eduard said, before nudging Raivis on the back.

Raivis yelped as he started moving downhill. He tried to regain balance, but had a hard time managing that. He didn't know where his eyes should be, and he couldn't get his weight distribution right. He could already feel himself wobbling and swerving, and when he looked up…

"Look out!" he shouted.

The person in front of him had just enough time to turn around to look back at him, before they collided with each other. Raivis cried out as they continued to roll down the slope, even though neither of them was standing anymore. Raivis felt a snap, and it took him a moment to realise that his leg was on fire.

The two finally came to a stop, groaning as they lay on the ice.

Raivis was out of it for a moment, so he didn't realise that there was a crowd forming around the two of them until the paramedics managed to get the two untangled, and were checking on them individually.

"Does anything hurt?" the paramedic asked as he shone a light into Raivis's eyes.

Raivis blinked in a daze as he tried to think. His limbs instinctively shifted, and he whimpered in pain.

"My leg," he groaned.

The paramedic started examining his legs, and after poking the right leg Raivis cried out in pain. He gritted his teeth as the paramedic poked around.

"It might be broken," the paramedic said. "We'll need to get an x-ray to be sure."

After some time and further examinations, Raivis found himself in the back of an ambulance. He glanced towards the other occupant – the person he collided with – and for the first time realised that he knew the person. And not only that, but he had a crush on him.

"E-Emil?" he stammered.

The other turned to him, and a moment later his eyes lit up in recognition.

"You're… Raivis, right?" Emil asked.

Raivis blushed. Emil was one of the more popular students, while Raivis was lower on the social food chain. In fact, he was surprised that Emil even knew his name. And he realised that he might have just earned Emil's hatred.

"Y-yeah," he stammered, averting his gaze. "I'm really sorry about this. It's my first time skiing, and…"

"Didn't you get to ski on the school trip?" Emil interrupted.

"I-I got a cold, so I didn't get a chance."

"Oh, I see."

It was quiet for a while, and Raivis kept waiting for Emil to admonish him. To yell at him for getting him injured. To scold him for ruining his holiday as well. To lecture him about looking where he was going.

"I'm sorry," Raivis squeaked.

"It's fine," Emil sighed. "This is your first time, after all. It takes a while to build confidence, and to feel comfortable, and to know how to use your weight properly. These things happen. That's why they have paramedics ready. But I'll admit, this is the worst pain I've ever had." Emil glanced down at his left arm. "My family always goes to places like this. I practically grew up on the slopes. I got hurt a lot of times. So, you don't have to worry about it."

Raivis relaxed when he heard that. At least he wouldn't receive hatred from the boy he had a crush on.

The two chatted a bit, even after arriving at the hospital. They had to wait for a long while for the x-rays, so they had plenty of time to wait. Raivis was actually upset when he saw that their family members arrived.

Toris and Eduard fussed over Raivis, and as for Emil's brothers…

Well, only one of them appeared to fuss over Emil, while two others tried to stop the last one, who seemed to be extremely amused by the situation, to the point of being annoying.

Raivis was surprised that no one was blaming him. Everyone was acting amicable with each other. It might have helped that Eduard was friends with one of Emil's brothers.

After returning from the hospital, Emil and Raivis were confined to staying inside the lodge. That forced them to spend quite a bit of time together in order to stave off boredom. Raivis couldn't help but feel glad for the opportunity to spend time with his crush.

And when they returned back to school a few weeks later, Raivis was surprised when Emil invited him into his circle. So, at the very least, he'd been upgraded to 'friend'. He was honestly happy about just reaching that.

The prompt is: 'Imagine Person B tries to go skiing with their family for the first time. Inexperience causes them to swerve out of control and they crash into their crush Person A who also happens to be there with their family on a skiing trip. They talk a bit while getting patched up.'

Everything I know from skiing comes from TV. I'm South African. Not a lot of opportunities here. I mean, the first time I saw snow was when I was eight, and I had to wait until I was in Europe to see it again sixteen years later. I think there's a place near the Drakensburg, but I think they use artificial snow. And the only time I managed to go there was for an unrelated thing in the off-season.
