MacTai: Patient Sacrifice
"Ooh, this looks pretty!" Mei exclaimed as she held up the garment. "What do you think, Chio?"
Chio just smiled and nodded as he lowered the heavy bag to the floor, silently hoping that this was the last store his girlfriend visited. He checked the time and winced. There was half an hour left before it was twelve o'clock, and he really wanted to get lunch at that time.
"Ooh, this looks good too!" Mei squealed. "I can't wait to try it on!"
Chio sighed. That meant even more time at this store. Well, at least he managed to get some clothes for himself as well.
…
"Thank you for coming with me today, Chio," Mei said.
"Of course," Chio said.
At least the deal was that he could choose the restaurant. That was at least some comfort. Though, sometimes, he couldn't help but wonder if the only reason why she wanted to date him was because she wanted someone to carry her shopping.
"I got you something," she announced.
He was surprised, and he watched her rifling through her handbag. She handed him something, and his eyes widened when he opened the box and saw the bracelet. It was a masculine bracelet, with half a broken heart as a charm.
"I have the other one," she said, raising her wrist to show him a daintier version of the bracelet with the other half of the broken heart. "Thanks for everything, Chio. So, do you like it?"
He smiled softly.
"Thank you," he said. "I love it."
And there was the reminder. Mei might have been a bit distracted by her own wants sometimes, but she would just as often show that she cared about him. That he was more than just her pack mule.
He just needed to endure a few hours of clothes shopping to see it sometimes.
