FinSey: Puppy in the Snow
Tino was startled awake when he heard a shriek coming from elsewhere in the apartment. He jumped out of bed and followed the noise, finding Michelle in front of the window, looking out. He relaxed a bit when he noticed the huge smile on her face, but couldn't help but wonder what the shriek was about.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Look!" she squealed, pointing outside. "It's snowing!"
Tino looked out and saw that it was indeed snowing. Growing up in Finland, he was pretty used to it, so he couldn't quite see the same joy that Michelle was seeing.
He then recalled that she came from an island near the equator, and so had probably never even seen snow before. This was a completely new experience for her.
"Do you want to go outside?" he asked.
She eagerly nodded her head, before running towards the front door. He quickly grabbed her arm and pulled her closer, effectively stopping her.
"The snow's pretty cold," Tino said. "You need to go bundle up."
She looked outside, and she looked as though she was afraid that the snow would disappear in the time it took her to get dressed in something warmer. He smiled and hugged her.
"The snow's not going to disappear," he assured her. "But if you don't wear something warm, then you are going to get sick, and you won't be able to have any more snow days."
Her eyes widened, and she bolted to the bedroom. Tino waited for a moment before calmly going towards the bedroom, just when Michelle stumbled out wearing a thick coat, scarf and boots. Tino nodded in satisfaction, before he went to get dressed as well. Michelle was bouncing in front of the door when he joined her.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
She eagerly nodded, and the two went to the courtyard of the apartment building together. He watched as she ran into the snow, gaze going skyward as she tried to catch the falling snowflakes. She eventually gave up on that, bending down to take a handful of it in her hand to throw in the air.
"It's wet!" she exclaimed, obviously surprised.
Tino smiled as he watched her giggle and run around, and he was reminded about the time when he got a puppy and the puppy experienced snow for the first time. She also experimented with her boots, watching her footprints in fascination and seeing how deep the snow really was.
As she danced around in the snow, Tino bent down and formed a ball. He had to aim carefully, before he let the snowball fly. It crashed against Michelle's head, catching her ear. She squealed before rounding on him, but she wasn't angry. She was surprised.
"W-what did you…?" she asked.
Tino didn't give her a chance to ask, as he'd created another snowball and threw it to her, this time catching her shoulder. She got the message, as she quickly sought to build her own snowballs. Tino knew that he could have utterly destroyed her in the snowball fight, but he also knew that this was her first experience with snow, and he didn't want her to be mad at him. He didn't want to ruin it for her.
He only stopped when he noticed that her hands were getting red, and that she wasn't wearing gloves.
"I think that's enough for now," he announced, removing his own gloves. "Next time, please wear gloves, before you hurt your hands."
She pouted, but when she saw the state of her hands, she eagerly put on the gloves. Tino smiled and wrapped an arm around her.
"Let's go back and I'll make breakfast," he said. "Trust me, there's going to be a lot of fun in the snow."
Michelle beamed and leaned closer to him.
The prompt is: 'Person A has only lived in really hot places that never get any snow while Person B has lived in typically cold places that get tons of snow. Person B is super tired of snow but when Person A sees snow for the first time in real life Person B can't help but see it in a new light.'
Some of the things in this chapter are my own experiences when it snowed for the first time when I was in France. Before that, I only had one real experience with snow when I was eight, and the only thing I really remember about it is how I found out about it. I'd just woken up and went to my closet to look for something to wear. I then felt something collide with me, and I saw this white stuff in my hair. My mom threw a snowball at me, and she told me that it was snowing. But anyway, when it was snowing in France, I was made aware of it at about nine o'clock at night. We had a WhatsApp group for the South African assistants, and as soon as the first message of snow came in, we all started to react. I saw it falling down in clumps and went out to investigate, and I'll admit that it's a good thing that there were no witnesses to my reaction. I was giggling a bit too much. I had to go in after a while because I went out with flip-flops, but as soon as I got proper shoes on I was out again. I remember one of the other assistants saying that she was so excited that she forgot to take her keys when she left the hostel she was staying in, and then had to do the walk of shame.
