"Ve, that's it!" Feliciano encouraged.
Michelle beamed as she put the rolling pin aside and started with the pizza topping. Feliciano was teaching her how to make pizza from scratch, and so far it was going well.
"Alright, then we just need to put it in the oven," Feliciano said. "Now…"
He was interrupted by the sound of the phone ringing in the other room. He smiled apologetically and ran out of the room.
Michelle shrugged, before turning to the oven. It had already been preheated, and so she just needed to place the pizza in the oven and turn on the timer. She couldn't see the baking tray, but figured that it would be fine. She'd bought many premade pizzas before, and she didn't need the trey. She supposed that it would not be a problem.
She smiled before she went to check on Feliciano. He was speaking on the phone in Italian, and based on the tone of voice, it might have been his brother and he was in trouble. Michelle stared at him for a moment before going towards the bathroom.
When she returned to the kitchen, ready to do some cleaning while she waited for the pizza to finish baking, she came to a stop when she saw the smoke coming from the oven door. She yelped, before she opened the oven door, releasing a cloud of smoke.
Her eyes went towards the ceiling, eyeing the smoke detector. She watched the lights flicker before changing colour. A moment later, the device started screaming.
A few seconds later, Feliciano ran into the kitchen. He quickly opened the window and waved the smoke out before turning to Michelle.
"Quickly, turn it off!" Feliciano said.
Michelle quickly turned the oven off before she looked at the pizza. She was expecting a disk of charcoal, but the pizza looked alright. In fact, it didn't look as though all the cheese had melted.
"I-I'm sorry," Michelle said. "I don't know what happened."
Feliciano poked his head in. Michelle wrung her hands, worried about messing things up and afraid that Feliciano would get mad.
"There's the problem," Feliciano said, pointing towards the bottom of the oven. "Some of the cheese melted and fell on the heating element. Because it's directly against the heat, it started burning."
Michelle widened her eyes in realisation. She blushed.
"I'm so sorry," she said. "You must think I'm an idiot."
"No, not at all," Feliciano said. "Everyone makes mistakes. That's how we learn. And I think what we both learned from this is that we shouldn't put the cheese on the very edge."
Michelle smiled at the reassurance. Feliciano continued to look into the oven.
"We should wait for the oven to cool down before we clean up," Feliciano said. "If that stays, we're just going to have more problems."
"And what about the pizza?" Michelle asked.
They jumped when the timer went off. Feliciano chuckled.
"Well, I don't think it would be too bad," Feliciano said. "But it might be a bit smoky."
My sister is proving to be a goldmine for prompts. And yes, she found out that the smoke detector in their apartment works. All because of a pizza.
